I was desperate for a burger so I took a chance. Old school burger is correct. If you want a cheeseburger your only choice is American cheese. I opted for no cheese. The fries were perfectly deep fried. The tarter sauce is good. The chocolate milkshake was a pale mocha color. It was served in a styrofoam cup. Really! If I had a blindfold on I would not have been able to tell between chocolate or vanilla. For $4.50 I expect to taste the chocolate. I wouldn't go back. Old school needs a little updating. read more

The Ranch burger is a good burger for $3.00. Unfortunately, it was $8. The onion rings were made from frozen and worked out to be about $1 per ring. I would put this place on par with Burger King. In fact their motto could be "All the flavor, twice the price." Total bill for a burger, onion rings, and a coke: just under $18. Not fast food, expensive food quickly. I'm not a huge fan of 5 Guys but they are better than this place. I can't understand how this place has stayed open as long as it has until I drive by a Jack in the Box. First time here and I am not from Bothell. I would compare the burger to a Braum's burger. Nothing really stands out in flavor or overall just goodness of the burger. It's a fast food burger at a bit higher price point then other fast food burgers. The onion rings were okay, a bit hard instead of a nice crunch. I've driven past Ranch Drive In twice within the last two weeks before trying it out today. Both times there were a lot of people there so I figured it must be good. I read reviews on Google and the majority were favorable. I took my son, his friend, and nephew with me. Our order consisted of 1) regular ranch burger 1) bacon ranch 1) bacon double ranch 1) fish sandwhich 2) onion rings 2) fries and 4) milkshakes. The best part of the meal were the milkshakes and fries. My ranch burger was probably the worst burger I've ever had. The meat had NO flavor. They don't season their patties and the dressing was bland. The fish also had no flavor and the onion rings were too oily. The bill came to $71. Totally not worth it. As much as I'd really love to give this cute place a great review, I just can't. The service is great and the employees very friendly, but unfortunately that's where the good part ends. I gave the two stars for the friendly employees. The food. Oh, darn, the food. It's pretty awful. Hubs ordered a burger. Cooked within an inch of it's life, and just pretty tasteless. He had onion rings that were decent, but can't make a meal out of those. I wasn't in a burger mood, so ordered a jumbo dog. It was cut in half and grilled, which should have made it great. Sadly, it was a VERY greasy and half-charred mess. I know that hot dogs have some fat, but this one was dripping with grill grease, which made the dog taste awful. No matter how many bad hot dogs I've had, this is probably the first one I just couldn't even finish. The brown grease dripped off of it until the wrapper under it was full of the brown, nasty grill oil. The french fries were the biggest disappointment. I have a HUGE love for crinkle fries. What is it about the crinkles that makes them taste so much better than normal fries? Not sure, but I love them muchly. The crinkle fries here were totally overlooked and tough, while at the same time being completely soaked through and through with oil. Not quite sure how they accomplished that, but they were absolutely inedible. Sad face. To be denied crinkle fries that are edible is a terrible thing. Also had shakes, that had a really weird taste like ice cream that sat out on the counter and melted. Sort of airy and foamy, not in a good way. Since this is one of those small, privately-owned-type fast-food places, I was truly hoping for at least a little better. I can say that the service is friendly, and the place is quaint and cute---which is all fine---but you can't eat food here unless you are either too completely drunk or loaded to tell the difference, or you were born without taste buds. Yeah, that's right, 5 freakin stars. I think I would get kicked out of Bothell, if I didn't, but i actually MEAN it. This is *the* hang out for high schoolers. You are NOTHING if you're first job doesn't include a stint here. Oh yeah, you WILL get to 2nd base if you take you're homecoming date here. THAT is how much the Ranch *IS* Bothell. It is typical "family run small business" fast food. It's consistent, it's yummy, and it's all about killing the arteries for a few bucks. But the best part...BEST part of the Ranch is hitting that walk up window in summer time for some nice soft servce ice cream. Vanilla, Chocolate or for you super-freaks out there (like me) the Twist. Nothing pleases me more than taking someone who's never been here before and watching them order an ice cream cone like they would as some lame ass Baskin Robbins or McDonald's. If you say "large" be prepared. Hell, anything over "kids cone" you should be forewarned. Those mamma-jamma's are huge!! Oh, Ranch - I love you for sentimental reasons (the kitschy decor, the die-hard resistance to relocating from the Bothell Landing area, despite pressure from the city to move, the unchanging menu - which includes everything from burgers to corndogs to fish-and-chips, and unique milkshake flavors (mmmm butterscotch)). And yet... it's a business primarily run by teenagers, so the service is really uneven/slapdash. Sometimes your Ranch burger will be good, and sometimes it will be an overcooked hockey puck with some limp lettuce and an anemic tomato slice on top. They serve crinkle cut fries (which are inferior to other fries, IMO) - get the delicious onion rings instead. The soft serve (which forms the base for the milk shakes) is great, too, if you have room for dessert. I keep coming back no matter what - because even "bad" days at Ranch are worth the calories (plus, it's a Bothell institution!). read more

You know why Ranch Drive-In has earned 5 stars? Because I am a whore for pumpkin milkshakes... and this place delivers them YEAR ROUND! Also, You really don't need to argue with yourself about what would be a "healthier choice"... it's ALL fattening, greasy, fried, and sauced up food. Prepare for it. Embrace it. And ugh, they have pineapple milkshakes-- my boyfriend seems to think these are gods gift to pineappleheads, but I think they are gross. They have chunks of pineapple in them though. read more

The Ranch is okay. It's not the best burger but I'd take it over a fast food burger any day. The burgers are sold a la carte. I had the Ranch burger and my friend had the chicken sandwich. We shared the large fry. My burger was $5.80 which wasn't a bad price but with fries it was $8.30. That's pushing Red Robin price without the bottomless fries. I think Red Robin is better. The fries were pretty good. Crispy and we didn't even eat half of the large fry sharing them between us. When we were done it was kind of underwhelming. It filled the hole but didn't leave us thinking "man, that was good!". Nothing to run back to but it's fine in a pinch. The kid helping us was nice. read more

The few times that we had been there we experienced both slow and busy times, but the time to order was very long every time. Moreover, receiving our food took a considerably long time for what I consider a fast food joint. A wait can always be justified if the food was worth that time spent... Well, not in this case. I have tried a few different items to attempt to find something good enough to explain why the Ranch Drive Inn is busy, but I haven't been successful. Everything that I have had here tasted almost identical to cafeteria food from a high school or hospital. On top of the long wait and poor quality meal, I would say that this place is well overcharging the customer. For example, a grilled chicken sandwich only is $6.39, seriously? I was really shocked at how many locals frequent this restaurant after I tried it for the first time. Since then, I have had a few other experiences to see if I just ordered the wrong thing. Unfortunately, everytime ended up being a poor experience. Cons: 1. Poor quality food that tastes similar that of frozen meat or cafeteria food. 2. Long waits to receive order. 3. The price for the food especially considering the low quality is unreasonably disproportionally high (keep in mind it's Fast Food but served slow) 4. Fully staffed with high school students who love socializing with each other and their friends that stop by instead of being attentive of waiting patrons. Pros: 1. Convenient location off Bothell Way After several opportunities to have my mind changed, it failed to do so. After hearing so much about this place from the locals in Bothell I decided to try this place out. Being a burger enthusiast myself, it was right up my alley. Small little hole in the wall place the has recycled high school kids as employees for the last 20 years I'm sure. But there must be a reason they are still around. I got the Ranch Burger with Onion Rings and a shake. The burger was delicious. It reminded me of a Kid Valley burger but better. The onion rings were a bit of a let down. Mine were not as plump as the picture on yelp shows and there must have been only about 7 of them, nothing special. The shake was awesome! Good and thick, definitely bad for you. Prices were a little on the high side though I thought for the experience. The burgers are about $6 without fries or drink. With it all together you are looking just over $10.00. I gave this place 4 stars because it was definitely good but I would probably rather have Burger-master up the street for cheaper. read more

Expensive!! No meal deals, all burgers are about $6-7, drinks, fries and/or onion rings are extra. No kid meals. They have about two people working, and they are in NO hurry. The onion rings were overpriced, considering you only get about 5. With that said, everything that we ordered was REALLY good. My friend and I just ate here this evening, and it's ok. My mom tells stories about how it used to be the only burger joint in Bothell, and that at that time it was really good. Now, it's just kinda meh. It's not bad, it's not good. 1st problem is that they have kids working the counter, and while I know that teenagers need jobs, you need to make sure that they're being trained right. The kid who took our order seemed like he was ready to go home and had had enough for the day. We asked for ketchup 3 times and still never got it. This would have been ok if we had had ketchup at home, but we didn't... Sometimes the fries are great and sometimes they're soggy. Today they were soggy. Maybe it was because it was half an hour before closing and so it was an older batch? I'm not sure. We keep going here because it's a nice walk from my friends apartment, and because the McDonalds at Bothell Landing closed. read more

Yummy and delicious. The burgers reminded me of the flat large Burger King burgers but much more juicy and flavorful. I love Red Mill as well but I wouldn't compare the places because the style of burgers are different. All I remember of the Ranch Burger was it was a lot of meat and cheese while Red Mill is more of a 'restaurant' style burger with veggies and stuff. The fries were delicious at Ranch Burger - better than Red Mill fries - and WAY better onion rings. Worst burger I've had in washington. The bun was grilled -- that's always a good thing, but when it starts out stale, it's still stale when it's grilled. The fries where more salt than potato though my wife's onion rings were decent. The prices seemed high, especially after we tired what we paid for... sadly. I really want to like the Ranch. I live nearby and I generally prefer local independent restaurants over chains. But... based on 2 visits it's a mixed bag. Pros: Good burgers. Cute decor. Friendly workers. Clean. Convenient location. Cons: High prices on many items. E.g. $8.49 for a small plate of 3 chicken strips (that were average) and fries. Limited menu for kids. We opted for the hot dog, sans fries, for $3.50. It's a small hot dog and I'm not at Safeco Field, what? Really SLOW on both visits. On the last visit it was clearly slow for everyone, people at tables with numbers, more like a bingo parlor than a restaurant. They credited part of our meal due to the slowness (30 min) which was nice, but 2/2 times it's been slow. So... if you've got time to kill and aren't too hungry and didn't want chicken strips I could see coming here. Otherwise head to Red Robin or Terry's Famous in Woodinville I guess. read more

A previous reviewer stated, "the Ranch *IS* Bothell." I couldn't agree more. I'll admit a strong bias toward the Ranch. It was my first job, as well as the first job of many of my friends and acquaintances. I can say that it really is a family owned joint (I believe Devin is the third generation of Austins to own it) and they treat their employees like part of that family. But there are lots of reasons to love the Ranch, even if I didn't have tons of hilarious memories from working there. The burgers are top-notch, as are the fries and onion rings. Hand-mixed shakes with a startlingly large selection of flavors (I recommend strawberry and fresh banana). The restaurant itself has changed very little since it opened 60 years ago, down to the charming hand-carved menus and weird western mural. I think they didn't even get modern cash registers until about ten years ago. (Although it should be noted in fairness that the prices themselves have changed quite a bit -- many reviewers have noted the high cost of a Ranch burger, and I can't disagree. However, given the rarity of a family-owned restaurant of this caliber which is also a local institution, you could cut 'em some slack and be a sport about the prices.) It seems like they play up the western angle more than they used to, their website (WEBSITE?!) promising a "rootin' tootin' dining experience." I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that. It's good to know places like the Ranch are out there, takin' 'er easy for all us sinners. read more

Open since 1959, Ranch Drive-In is older than I am. Heck, it's older than most yelpers. So as an institution that has stood the test of time, I had to check it out. Finally, after working in Bothell for 3 years, I stopped by the Ranch Drive-In for the first time yesterday. For the most part, it didn't disappoint. No doubt many people will appreciate the nostalgia - old wooden menus (though at 2008 prices) and the simple drive in fare covering mainly burgers but also offering a variety of fried foods. An order of bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, and small soda hit $10, so it isn't exactly cheap. And for the same price, my standard for burgers, Red Mill, seems like a bargain in terms of quality of ingredients, portions, and selection. Overall, Ranch Drive In beats fast food for taste but at twice the price, I think I'll stick to Red Mill. read more

Our family has been coming here since moving to Bothell in 1992. Both of my kids worked here during high school years (as did many of their friends) and we've always loved going there. The owner is a class act as well. Sure some of the teens behind the counter seem less than enthused, but, I am not there to make a best friend, I just want my food made well and my orders handed to me with the right stuff in the bag and this always happens at The Ranch. (Can't say the same for other fast food take out.) The nice thing too is that it's always the same. I love to re-visit places that stay the same! The Ranch burger is my favorite. They have a "special sauce" on the burger that I really like. Their fries and onion rings are awesome. Bad fries can ruin a burger joint for me, but, theirs are two thumbs up for me. I like the tartar for my fries. (I'd never heard of tarter on fries until moving here from AZ.) Hubby always gets the chicken sandwich (fried) and it's his favorite. He loves the chocolate shakes as well. They are handmade and really yummy. (So are the swirl ice cream cones!) I know this is a weird thing to mention, but, I LOVE their ICE! It's little pellets, great for munching. Overall.. even with their funky old hand-carved, wooden menu board, (which is nostalgic for me), and, the western motif wall hanging...it's a great, local burger joint. I've been going to the Ranch Drive-In since I was a kid and it's definitely gone down hill over the years. This afternoon I ordered a bacon ranch burger with cheddar and onions along with a chocolate milkshake. Now the chocolate milkshake was pretty good but how do you mess up a milkshake? That's kind of hard to do. Anyway, the burger patty was so thin and over cooked while also being under seasoned that it had an almost crunchy texture to it. I was charged $.30 extra for onions in which you get a few raw ones on your burger as opposed to getting some nice sauteed ones., Plus $.50 extra for "cheddar" cheese that looked and tasted like Kraft American singles. Following that were the two half strips of bacon? When you have a bacon burger it definitely should not be lacking in the bacon category. All in all was the burger better than a McDonald's burger? Yeah probably. But is it better than a Dick's burger? I'd say no. Not only are the Ranch Drive-In burgers more than twice the price, I also think they have less flavor and for about $7 you can get a dick's deluxe, fries and chocolate milkshake. They should just take the bun, meat, and all the toppings and put it in a blender and serve it as a shake, it's that messy and juicy. I lost about half my burger on my lap trying to eat this mouth-watering hunk-o-goodness....and I feel so unhealthy now. However, I did not feel like a fool scarfing it down and licking up the stuff that fell out as not to waste a piece of it, and trying not to make piggy noises. It was like Dick's but BETTER. I have yet to taste their reknowned sundae though. Love the fact that EVER-Y-THING is old, like they never changed a thing. Ya know- the menu, the orange and brown theme, and the old-fashioned orange checkered burger wrappers. Was informed by a young patron that this is a bothell staple. Staff super friendly. But a little disappointed in the burger. Their 1/4 lb is different than a 1/4er in Texas. And if you are use to a big burger for that amount you need to order the double. The taste is good but caution they put mayo and ketchup standard. I view this as high treason but they will custom it for you. (Aka mustard please, which seem to shock them) Onion rings and wrinkle fries are good. Overall a very average place and was a little over 15 a person so a little high. That was 4 burgers, 1 lg fry, 1 lg onion ring, 2 lg drinks, 2 lg waters, and 1 sm shake. This place has been here forever. And when you go inside you can really see how long. The menu is carved out of wood, only the pricing has any ability to change. The service is great and to keep it even more 'classic' they only accept cash or check for payment. This can be rather annoying if you dont remember before you get there. Luckily there is an ATM right across the street. However, the food is really, really good. Easily the best burgers around until you get to downtown Seattle. This is my 'hometown' burger joint.....that said, in the fall on Friday nights, its really busy because the local high schools play football walking distance and after games, everyone comes here for food! read more

First of all I'll start by saying that I 100% realize that this is not an ideal restaurant for someone to eat at that's plant based. However they have a veggie burger in the menu but it's vegetarian and not vegan. I kindly asked if I could simply order a regular burger without the meat so it would be just a bun with veggies. The nice cashier asked his manager and then came back and said they could totally do that BUT I would have to order the Ranch Burger and couldn't order just a "regular" burger. Now the Ranch burger is made with 1/4 lb of beef and I'm not eating the beef so it seemed a bit strange that they would make an exception like this but only in a way that benefited them. So whatever, I order the Ranch burger ask for no meat, no cheese, so dressing.... so at this point it's a bun with lettuce, pickle, tomato and ketchup. I ask if I can order sautéed onions and mushrooms on it. Nice cashier Nick says "sure no problem". I pay for my food and my friends food and we are good to go. Then before we leave the counter this girl runs up to Nick and whispers something I can't hear. All of a sudden Nick turns to me and says "I'm sorry but my manager said I now have to charge you for a mushroom burger instead since you want mushrooms". So now the mushroom burger is $2 MORE than the Ranch burger because not only are there mushrooms but it comes with Swiss cheese..... which I'm not eating! Listen I get it, I have a complicated order. But to take my order and then have a "manager" say I have to now be charged MORE after all is said and done when I'm literally eating a bun, with lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, mushroom, and ketchup is absurd and AWFUL customer service. Lastly I'll close by saying the very next day I took my son to Burger Master on Bothell Everett Hwy, I asked the same questions, ordered the SAME exact burger and was charged $1.65!!!!! Ahhh, the Ranch... sigh... such fond memories... The Ranch is a famous burger joint in Bothell. Family owned & operated, i remember the days back in High School when i would work my 3 and 4 hour shifts (4 hours was SO long! HA). Yep, the Ranch was my first job! Run by all high school and early college kids. We would get in ketchup and mustard fights, sneak ice cream when the cameras weren't looking, lock each other in the walk-in cooler, whip each other with bleach towels... and occasionally actually work. Fun times! As for the food (because who really cares about my high school job??)i never seem to make it back there very often, but i dream of the bacon burger! And the Ranch Burger with GRILLED ONIONS. And the fries in tartar sauce. And the dipped ice cream cones. The burgers are sloppy and messy and so delicious. You must order a la carte and bring a wad of cash. So it's pretty much glorified fast food, but it's old fashioned and charming and worth the slightly overpriced menu, and it makes me remember that at one time in my life, my hands always smelled of pickles. read more
