I have never in my life felt the need to leave a negative review, but for $600, this was easily one of the top three worst dining experiences I've ever had. This place does an incredible job cos-playing Yellowstone while completely ripping you off with a smile. It's a rustic-chic facade designed to distract you from the fact that the kitchen is operating at a high school cafeteria level. If you're going to charge "Wagyu" prices, you shouldn't be serving a steak that is bone-dry and flavorless. The rosemary potatoes had zero hint of herbs, and the broccolini inexplicably tasted like fish--a massive red flag for kitchen cross-contamination. To cap off the "fine dining" experience, our dessert arrived at the table still frozen in the center. It's clear nothing here is actually made in-house. Beyond the culinary failures, the bill was a mess. They conveniently "forgot" to honor their own Wednesday special ($50 off a $100+ bottle of wine). When you're spending over half a grand on a meal, you shouldn't have to audit the check for basic math and promised discounts. The only reason I didn't make a scene at the table was out of respect for our server, Bill, who was professional and hardworking. It's a shame the management and the "chefs" are hiding behind their front-of-house staff while running a total grift in the back. All hat, no cattle. I'll start by saying we have loved this place and have been coming in on and off regularly for about 5 years. Tonight was beyond disappointing. We arrived at 5 pm (So early) for a bar table before the dinner rush. It was such a disappointment of a night for the amount of money we paid. I'd never write a review but because no one came to Talk to us about the issues I felt like honestly we were a number and no one cared. My 55 dollar bar menu steak came out cold and undercooked (a rare flank steak cold is like chewy jelly) we told the server and she said, I'll tell "somebody"and didn't come back- even for me to order a glass of wine. There was no manager that came to help with my cold steak, and we were never offered anything else at that point. We asked for a box for my child's meal which we never received, were never offered dessert and left feeling just kind of jilted. I understand it's first world problems too. But because you can't leave this place with out paying $200 and nobody seemed to care, I felt like a review mattered. read more

Amazing experience at Ranch House! Everything: the food, the service, and the atmosphere was wonderful. We came to celebrate our engagement and were not disappointed. The halibut was delicious as was the chicken. We couldn't not get the family-style side of umami fries which were to die for. We opted for dessert to go and the banana cake was beautiful and light. Waygu $11-20/ ounce served cold, over salted elk tenderloin, overcooked asparagus, soggy fries, overpriced wine. The simultaneous plating lacked one serving for 5 minutes so the food was cold. The rest of the service was slow. This coupled with an automatic alcohol tax of 3% and a kitchen tax of 3%, is exasperating. I never mind paying top dollar for a great experience, but this was average. $588 for average food and minimal alcohol! Left after dark to an unlighted walkway to an unlit parking lot. First off, the food is excellent! We had the beat salad, Wagu strip steak, lamb, an interesting and delicious take on a pot pie, several sides, a few drinks and a peach crumble. Every single item was amazing and well worth the money! The 2 star reduction is a result of the unfriendly nature of the host and the two servers we interacted with. I don't know what the issue was but they were down right too cool for school pretentious. Maybe it's a result of being one of two restaurants at the resort and they are considered the more upscale choice. I want to add the rest of the staff was very friend and helpful. From the person serving bread to the people refilling our waters. All of them were lovely! There was an especially friendly Indian guy that helped us a few times too. Couldn't have been a worse experience for my pops birthday. Everything started fine up until we ordered. It took an hour to get our appetizers. The least of what could have made it better but didn't is our wine glasses sat empty the whole time. Then I had to request the complimentary bread that was never brought. Then after 3 mentions to 2 different servers it was never remembered to get GF bread for my dad which they said they'd get. The same thing happened with our appetizer which our brain dead server had to ask us twice if we had already had our appetizers. Then after requesting the manager, he could only claim their internet being down for their horrible service LOL! Complete immaturity and unable to take responsibility from this manager. The joke on it all was once we got our appetizers I got my soup without a spoon for 10 min and my dad's salad came out without dressing! What a joke. Food is not worth it and service for what you pay is definitely not worth it. Take your money SOMEWHERE ELSE. My wife and I went up for a day trip to the hot springs and for a (hopefully) nice dinner at Granby Ranch. The building and grounds were excellent, very nice atmosphere and views. The service was also very good, with an attentive waiter and assistants. Added a star for great service. The food, specifically the steaks, did leave much to be desired, unfortunately. We both got the "superior" Wagyu tasting, at $170 per. For that price I expected to be pretty blown away by the meat, and we just were not. The meat was of varying tenderness, with two of the three cuts being relatively "chewy" and not the melt-in-your-mouth I'd expect of "Wagyu", even American Wagyu. The meat was also not seasoned very well and we had to salt it. Granted, the sides and drinks were good, though the sides weren't spectacular either. So we overall had a nice time but our bill ended up at over $500 for the two of us and I didn't even eat the leftover steak. Perhaps the other menu items are better, but we don't plan on going back to try. Pity, since Heck's (where we had a nice meal a few years back) only serves resort guests, so the Ranch House is the only dining option for the general public. read more

Last night we enjoyed a wonderful experience at The Ranch House at Devil's Thumb outside of Tabernash. I can't say enough about the food (melt in your mouth Wagyu short ribs and cooked to perfection NY Strip), the ambiance, and the spectacular mountain views from our table. However, the best part of the evening was the treatment we received from the staff who seemed to go out of their way to see that we were totally taken care of. Bartender Austin (from our long ago hometown in Michigan) made a special trip over to Heck's Tavern to get my wife's favorite drink. Our server, Jeff, made the evening complete with his gracious presence and helpful suggestions. As now long time "locals", we would like to thank Devil's Thumb for making their resort at least partially available to non-overnight guests and hope it will fully open soon so we can resume our favorite lunch spot at Heck's Tavern. read more

We dropped in on a Sunday night when the other restaurant - Hecks - was totally booked. So we made a reservation at the Ranch House. We love DTR and how it has transitioned into the 21st Century. We have been staying at the ranch since 2002, overnight, or, for a weekend or for a week at at time. Through out we gave enjoyed the Ranch House - preceded by the barn. Once the lodge opened we gravitated more to Hecks for its informal nature. But this last time - Hecks was not available. So we went to the Ranch House. Over the years our principally vegetarian approach has shifted to vegan. As a ranch, DTR excels at options we pass on. But throughout we have had great meals - with one exception 7 years ago. Anyway, dining out as vegans we are accustomed to limited choices - and - also those times when we are totally surprised by an off the menu phenomenal item. This was the case at the Ranch House this Sunday. An extraordinary vegetable medley over wild rice. Exquisite! The Devil's Thumb Ranch is a stellar backcountry cowboy Colorado luxury resort. It's literally become an international destination resort for weddings and other special events, with services ranging from horseback riding to full spa treatments; from stellar cross country skiing on over 5,000 acres of drop dead gorgeous property to great fly fishing. The view from the dining room looks east to the Front Range in a spectacular setting across open meadows and gently rising forests that frame the high mountain peaks. The place has been renovated in the last few years and has gone totally green, with off-the-grid geo-thermal heating and energy production, and aggressive recycle / sustainable policies, including the use of locally grown, and organic food in their restaurant. The restaurant used to be run by Evan Treadwell and the pricing was very high (as in $125 for their tasting menu). Under their new chef the prices have actually come down a bit, but unfortunately, so has the quality of their food. The beet salad was very good but not great. That was followed by a pistachio breaded abalone that was blah, even though they did use those squirt bottle dressing squiggles to try to spruce it up. The main course was made up of sliced delicious bites of elk tenderloin wrapped in bacon and that by far was the best thing about the night. But it was served with a large square of rather tasteless purple mashed potatoes that brought the dish down a level. Dessert--a strawberry soufflé stuffed chocolate cigar--was very good but not great. All-in-all a very special place that served up a very good but not extraordinary dinner. Visited for my wife's birthday with my in-laws. We started with the Dungeness Crab & Avocado and the Butter Poached Pacific Oysters. The crab was tangy with its turmeric aioli and the Oysters were creamy- both delicious. Our main courses were fantastic! My Great Range Bison Short Rib was tender and her Filet Mignon simply melted. My in-laws had similarly great reviews of their trout and elk loin. We each had drinks, and shared one dessert which, with tip, brought the bill to $385. read more

I spent the whole summer working and exploring Colorado, and my spontaneous evening at the Ranch House has remained one of the highlights of the whole season. I arrived half an hour earlier than my reservation, and was able to walk around Devil's Thumb. What a beautiful location and facility! Every employee I interacted with was more than friendly. When I headed over to the restaurant, I was greeted by name, (likely due to the fact I was the only solo female diner that evening) and walked to my table by the windows, which allowed me to look out over the horse pasture and mountains. My waitress Sean was incredibly friendly and knowledgable, guiding me through the menu and helping me make my selections for the evening. The menu was simple, but with excellent choices. I would have been willing to try anything on it. After placing my order, I was brought the tastiest little amuse bouche, consisting of hummus, arugula, and the tiniest sweet pepper, topped with a few crumbles of goat cheese. My main course (a shrimp dish, the name escapes me) was very good, nothing extraordinary, but the portion was perfect. For dessert I had the triple layer chocolate tower, and as an established chocolate snob, I was more than pleased! A smooth cup of vanilla tea finished the evening. (Sean even found me a little cup of soy milk for it.) During the course of my meal, the host (Rob), the chef, and my waitress (Sean) all came over to talk to me at different points, and were incredibly engaging and warm. Even though the food didn't blow me out of the water, the experience made the evening more than worth it. I left feeling so cared for over the course of the evening, and wishing I didn't live all the way in Ohio. If I'm ever back in Colorado, I will undoubtedly make the trip back to the Ranch House! read more

The Ranch House Restaurant at Devils Thumb Ranch could not have more beautiful views. The food was ok, our server was great, but what I'm here to complain about is their customer service. I made a reservation for my best friend's 50th birthday in the wine cellar. I called about 6 weeks in advance and asked for the special room. The woman on the phone said it was available and booked it for us and sent me a confirmation. I asked if it was a pre fixed menu and she said it was the same menu as upstairs in the restaurant. When we arrived for dinner the Manager and Hostess said we were at table 19 and 20. I corrected them and said we had the wine cellar, they pretty much ignored me until I said it again and asked who I talked to. I had no idea, so they just ignored me and asked if I had a confirmation. I said I did and when I said I found it, they again ignored me. And said it was never set up with catering. I'm pretty sure they gave it to someone else. They never apologized. Total jerks and for a " fine dining" establishment I couldn't believe how they treated us or the fact there were no table clothes on the table, but that's another story. On top of all this I tried to give my credit card to the hostess to pay for the dinner. She forgot, never ran it and then the bill came to the table. When my friend asked for it back, she was like, I'll go make sure it was charged. What? Who is running this place. So disappointed. Never going back again. I have been to Heck's and the Spa numerous times and have always brought a bunch of people each time, no more. This place has great views but horrible customer service. read more

Located on the stunning Devil's Thumb Ranch, we really wanted to love this place. Sadly it fell far short of our expectations. We got off to a pleasant start in the bar with comfy sofas, a knowledgable bartender and well poured drinks, but things went down hill in the dining room. Service was spotty and the kitchen was glacially slow. The salads took 50 minutes to arrive. Another 45 minutes passed before the entrees were delivered. When they did finally arrive, two of the three had to be sent back (two wagyu New York strips were a leathery medium-well, not the medium-rare ordered). Another 20 minute wait for the re-fired steaks. The servers were pleasant and seemed hard working, but it was clear they needed training. We attributed the overall mediocre experience to a lack of leadership. We never once saw a manager. No one seemed to be in charge and it really showed. read more

Kind of a let down. Heck's next door is actually better. We had the 3 course Valentine's menu and the options were lackluster. The quail main dish was not flavorful and the vegetables were almost raw. The prime rib was cooked sous-vide so understandably lukewarm, but the accompanying potatoes and vegetables were equally lukewarm. I even sent back the prime rib, complaining about the temperature... to which the waiter apologized and promptly returned a piping hot plate... full of lukewarm food. Pretty obvious that this food came off of a serving line in the back and was not made to order. Final note on the desserts. They were nothing special. A gooey snickers concoction that used mediocre chocolate and a strawberry tart that was only vaguely reminiscent of its namesake. The highlights of the meal were the amuse bouche, and the 2 wine blends we ordered. Definitely recommend skipping this place or ordering pizza. read more

I love Devils Thumb - the entire setting is beautiful and it feels like a homey Colorado lodge. We came for dinner at Heck's Tavern but it was closed for a kitchen remodel. The Ranch house restaurant has a new menu of a cross between Heck's items and Ranch House items. We were given a gift certificate and decided to order more expensive items on the menu and make it a special date night. I love the decor and feel at the Ranch House. I like to come for appetizers and wine in front of the fireplace in the bar area. The bar area was full so we put our names on the list for the dining room. We started with the fries and green chili for appetizers. The fries were good and the green chili was lacking spice and flavor but it had lots of shredded pork. My husband ordered the Black hog dish- a large pork chop and our waitress said it's one of my most popular dishes. My husband loved it and ate his entire huge plate. The waitress said, " no one has ever finished it before." My husband is now afraid he will forever be remembered as the guy who ate his entire hog plate. I am not a pork chop fan, I ordered the peppered sirloin with au gratin potatoes. My dinner was ok, too much pepper and kind of bland. When I pay a lot for steak I always compare to the Capital Grille- my favorite steakhouse. The prices are too expensive for the quality of food at the Ranch House. I wasn't wowed and nothing made me want to come back for a just ok expensive dinner. The setting is a 5 star setting but the food just bland and mediocre. I will come back for drinks and appetizer and sit by the beautiful cozy fireplace at the Ranch House. They have a $19 burger and we want to try it. Sounds like an expensive burger but if it's yummy and delicious the Ranch House we will frequent more often. When Heck's reopens I will be back to Devils Thumb ranch in the winter. I love when they have live music and they always have a great happy hour. Devil's Thumb is a beautiful place and it holds great appeal to keep me coming back just sit and sip wine and relax by a beautiful fireplace. read more

When we walked in, we immediately noticed that the restaurant had an egg odor. Food reviews (1) Beef tartare: it was supposed to have a quail egg on top of it but did not, and we had to request additional crackers because the 3 oz of meat came with 4 crackers. (2) French onion soup: extremely salty and served luke warm. (3) Blue cheese salad: it came with 6 bacon bits likely from a Safeway bag and literally 3 drops of dressing that tasted like Hidden Valley Blue Cheese dressing. Addressing service, we had a 6:30 dinner reservation, it took until 8:30 to get our tartare, french onion soup, and blue cheese salad. Our server failed to check on our food until we asked another server to check on the items. The chef rushed the preparation of the soup and salad. We also requested the other server take our entree orders, which he did. However, by 9:00 PM we still had not received our food, so we requested everything be boxed to go. The restaurant was almost vacant at this point, and another table celebrating a birthday looked equally as underwhelmed with the service. The servers were unapologetic, and we paid our bill in full ($281.00). Bottom line, this is not a fine dining restaurant, and it lacks hospitality. Spend your money at a restaurant that will appreciate your business and deliver on the quality of food. read more

We had an incredible experience last night at Ranch House. We popped in planning to share some appetizers and ended up in window seats splitting dinner. Natalie was our server and was incredibly attentive. She made great recommendations and we loved the Bison. At the end of dinner, she recommended the ice cream. We had the bourbon and caramel sea salt -- the texture was smooth and light i'm assuming it was home made. If you go I highly recommend asking for Natalie. She made our experience memorable and when my husband began to feel altitude sickness she told us her personal remedy and helped us get out the door quickly. Absolutely beautiful location and facilities. However, we spent $450 for a dinner of four and although the food was very good (not out of this world), the service is not up to par. We had to routinely flag down the server, were brought the wrong courses twice, received one main course 30 minutes before the other three arrived and were given an inaccurate final bill. The servers didn't seem to really know the menu either and were pretty inexperienced. For the price, this isn't acceptable. I was hoping for a spectacular dining experience like Boulder's Frasca or Denver's Fruition.... no such luck. Until the service matches the prices, I wouldn't recommend dining here. read more

Despite some of the recent reviews a couple from our group staying at the resort went to dinner at the Ranch House and raved about it. So, two days later our whole group of 15 had dinner there. Dinner selections ranged from vegetarian to trout and their signature Wagyu steak. Everyone had a fantastic meal and we had outstanding service. Coming from Chicago, we felt the pricing was fair, given the excellent food and service. We talked to the hostess and she explained that some of the previous mediocre reviews occurred during a period when the other restaurant at the resort, Heck's, was closed for remodeling. The Ranch House wasn't prepared to handle the spike in volume and service suffered. Heck's is back open now, so those problems are gone. read more

Couldn't get a table so decided to eat at the bar. 6 PM on a Saturday night, and they are out of their signature beef, no music playing in the background, all in all seems like a miserable place for a holiday weekend. Ordered our food, had to order side salad specially, waitress recommended a dressing, we got our salads, it didn't have the correct dressing. When we questioned the server, she stated, they didn't have that type of dressing here, don't know where the confusion came from since it was recommended by our waitress? When our food finally arrived, an hour later, it was just as disappointing. For such a high dollar establishment, you would expect them to do everything right, Mire importantly the little things. We are vacationing in Colorado from our home in the San Francisco Bay Area. While here my wife and I are celebrating our first year wedding anniversary. What a treat to find the Ranch House Restaurant for our special meal. The dining room view overlooks the Devil's Thumb Ranch with the snow capped Rockies as a back drop. Our waitress Natalie was excellent and attentive to our needs. Her suggestions about the menu were very informative and helped us choose the entrees for the evening. Natalie also explained how the meals were prepared on any item we had interest in trying. I decided on the Bacon Wrapped Elk Loin which was so tender and flavorful. My wife chose the Vegetable Stir Fry and found it delicious. Ending the meal with coffee and a decadent German Chocolate cake with an espresso whipped cream. When we visit Colorado Granby, Winter Park area we will make sure to revisit the Ranch House Restaurant. read more
