I am always sad there is not great pizza on the west side. It is a tragedy. But probably better for my arteries. I had an opportunity to order pizza, " any one you want Janet" ( woo hoo!) through Door Dash and landed on Ranch Pizza from NW Portland because I had them saved in my bookmarks for a long time. The pictures are drool worthy. We ordered the #4, which is topped with a ton, an abundance, A TON!, of ground sausage, Calabrian chiles ( I left them on for dining companion, stupidly erroneously thinking I could easily pick them off), blobs of ricotta and fresh basil. It comes with two cups of ranch dressing for dipping. I added a third for $1 in case the teen showed up. The pizza was warm still after its long journey to Bethany from downtown. It was good. The chiles are NOT easy to pick off ( I am not supposed to have chiles or seeds so oops) and are quite spicy so be warned, I loved the crust, the flavors, the ricotta blobs. The sausage was very fennel-ly. The pizza was not as cheesey as expected, it reportedly had parmesan and mozzarella but they were minimal. The ranch was good, not great but good. The cups were half full which was a bit irritating ( esp for the $1 cup) but it sufficient. I am not a ranch dressing person anyway. The leftovers were great. We warmed it up and added some parmesan.Thumbs up. We would get it again. I think we would go for a basic cheese pizza and add our own toppings. My only other note is dining companion/pizza purchaser would have liked a side salad but if you are like him and really dislike radicchio there are no options. Both the caesar and the house salad are only radicchio. That is VERY taste specific. It'd be nice to have a spinach or romaine or even spring mix option. During a recent visit to Portland, I really had a craving for a good pepperoni pizza. I looked at some reviews and photos online and selected Ranch PDX. I'm glad I did, because it was a great Detroit style rectangular pizza with more pepperoni than I would've imagined! I ordered online the pepperoni pizza with mixed olives. It was excellent. I also ordered the radicchio Caesar, but didn't realize it was not mixed greens AND radicchio (my error). The taste was fine. A relatively low-key branch, small shop with a few tables, bar seating, and one outdoor table. The energy inside was pretty good though, a bunch of young crews working. A lot of people dropped in for takeouts on Friday night. We tried the #4 quarter, pepperoni quarter, and breadsticks. Both quarters were solid. Plenty of sausage and pepperonis on the slices. I'm particularly a fan of the ricotta and chilli on the #4. The breadsticks were also decent, a tad oily and salty but the red sauce was fresh and delicious. I admittedly will say, finding a good pizza joint here in Portland has been a challenge. I'm not much of a crust-fan, which is why I prefer Detroit-style pizza. My friends were dying to try Ranch Pizza, so on our payday, we decided to treat ourselves to 2 whole orders of their Pan Pizza. For starters, eat the pizza while it's hot or toast it in the oven if you're at home. The dough is like focaccia- chewy. The corner slices were my favorite parts because the ends were nice and crispy. We ordered their #4 which was amazing- you had chunks of grounded sausages, pecorino romano, basil, and a heaping spoon of ricotta with their red sauce. Being the daredevils we are, we decided to order their Special for the day, which alters every day. It was vegetarian with 4 different cheese toppings- burrata, pecorino romano, parmesan, and mozzarella- and strips of basil with red sauce-- again amazing. I really enjoyed their signature house ranch sauce-- creamy. It also has an extra zest to it which I believe may be thyme (not too certain). Also, a discretion when ordering their large ranch to-go, it's about 12 oz container. My friends and I overestimated the amount of ranch we needed, so we ended up ordering 4 12 oz containers of the ranch. I absolutely love pizza. Being from Chicago, I've had all manner of pizza, including, of course, deep dish. Ranch PDX serves a thick pie, kind of like focaccia combined with a deep dish crust. Some of the best pizza in town! We walked in and ordered a #4 Whole Pie to go and it only took 15-20 min. It also came with two cups of ranch. The pizza is made Detroit-style, so the pie was square and had a pretty thick crust. All the toppings went together so well, and the Calabrian chili added a nice kick! Somewhere out there is the single best baloney sandwich with mayonnaise in the United States. Somewhere, someone is perfecting the best baked good ever made with Sweet 'N' Low. This is my issue with Ranch: It is the absolute best example Portland has produced of two things that are, at best, passable and, at worst, affronts to any sensible palate. Detroit-style pizza is brewery food: It is quick-serve, brick-cheese pan fodder that is nominally pizza and best enjoyed with a broad array of alcoholic options. Ranch dressing was a country-club folly that the American Midwest deemed a delicacy and used to mute the flavor of anything it deemed remotely challenging. It is to oregano what a six-foot asbestos blanket is to a small grease fire. They're a pair made for each other, but since its days at Poison Rainbow, I've always given Ranch credit for trying to make each of these items something other than patently disgusting or outwardly lazy. They've always hit the mark. The pizza honestly resembles the better incarnations of Northeast and Great Lakes pan-made Greek pizzas: Sturdy, but not painfully crisp, and elevated by superior ingredients. You'd think there's only so much that can be done with the medium--especially considering the aesthetically unpleasant charred square you're regularly greeted with--but adding Calabrian chiles to a sausage pie, pairing kimchi with Korean BBQ and throwing bacon lardons and roasted jalapeños onto a Hawaiian pie takes full advantage of the Detroit-style's non-dogmatic approach. A brewery tasting room wouldn't have the patience or budget to try any of the above. As for the signature ranch, it's still the only version of this culinary terror that tastes of buttermilk and has an airy consistency that betrays its primordial Hidden Valley snot-rocket ancestors. It's actually enjoyable, but will still never touch my pizza. I agree with some of the other posters: I'm a big fan of Sicilian pizza, and this style still feels too bready. And, much like the Greek pizzas of my past, it's hard to find one that isn't just sweating oil. This style will never be a go-to or a particular favorite--and its popularity among a segment of the Portland population raised in flat country or on suburban chains like Fultano's, Pietro's and Abby's/Izzy's (and with the dipping cups that come with them) is telling--but I give Ranch a lot of credit for trying to make folks like me understand the pizza they grew up with and how it resonated with them years later. People will point at Ken's, Dove Vivi or Lovely's 50-50 as "Portland-style pizza" for its grainy crust and farm-to-table toppings, but Ranch is far more honest about what the Oregon pizza experience actually looks like... and how Portland affects it. Somewhere out there, someone is going to town on that artisanal baloney + mayo and hammering 5-calorie Nutter Butters with a pronounced aspartame aftertaste. It's surprisingly difficult to make a gross bit of childhood memory palatable in adulthood, but I commend Ranch for the effort. read more
