This has been my family optometrist for many years, until recently. I originally went there because my whole family did, and they were just down the street from my parent's house. Every time I went was a horrible experience for me. Dr. Cummins is rude and condescending. Keep in mind that I've been a client for I want to say at least 7 years. He insulted my intelligence when I asked a simple question about my insurance policy. He also removes your contacts for you, which is uncomfortable and just plain strange. It got to the point where I dreaded my yearly check up because I knew I'd be seeing him, and paying a ton of money for contacts and glasses. Now that I'm older, I've realized that you don't have to go to the same doctor as your parents, and I have found a new place where the staff is friendly, and more importantly, helpful. I'm giving this office 2 stars only because my parents still love him (and they don't have a Yelp to represent that). I wouldn't recommend that anyone start using this doctor, there is much better elsewhere. read more

Let me begin with the fact that I would prefer to put negative stars. Also for those that are reading these reviews please note that ironically all the positive reviews are from persons with names that happen to coincide with his employees. This was a horrible experience, which I am now seeing is very similar for other patients. The doctor is rude, condescending and distracted. During my daughter's exam he was called out of the room 4 times, each time loosing his place, train of thought or clearly confusing her with someone else. my other daughter was the ONLY other patient there. His staff was rude that we were keeping there when they wanted to go to lunch...I did NOT want to plan to spend 4 hours trying to get a basic exam for two teenage daughters when we had appointments on the books for weeks. Like many others there were suddenly tons of fees that I expressly asked about and were not disclosed. He doubled bill both my insurance and me. He charge $36 training fee to watch my daughter put her own contact in. When I protested and complained to the insurance about the many levels of fraud he cut all communication, changed their email address and refused me the contacts I had already paid outrageous fees for. He tried to extort money out of me, refused files which are legally my property, discussed my bill with a family friend that happened to answer the friend and proceeded to bad mouth to this person as well...all highly illegal and unethical. PLEASE do yourself a HUGE favor and avoid this horrible experience and extremely costly mistake. read more

This is the only place I go for my eye appointments because I'm afraid of things touching my eye. Small office, and is available for Saturday visits. Still would not plan anything around your appointment, got checked in at 9:55 and was home by 12:15 read more

Worst experience I've ever had at an optometrist. The doctor was not considerate of what I came in for in the first place. All I needed was a contact fitting, he decided to do a whole eye exam. Also, dilated my eyes kind of without consent. He just said he was going to put drops in my eyes, my stupid self let him, and then he said, "okay just sit until they're dilated." Overall I was there for two hours, maybe more. I've been using contacts and glasses for 15 years, never have I ever had an optometry appointment go this way. read more

I've been coming here for years and I love the service and staff. I moved out of the east county area and tried another eye doctor once and came back. The doctor is very knowledgeable and has many years of experience and it is definitely worth the drive. My son really enjoys his visits. He reminds me about our annual appointment. Great staff. Dr. Cummins is very amiable. He answers all your questions to the best of his knowledge and is also easy to talk to about any concerns. The 2 secretaries Cindy and Judy make a wonderful team and are so helpful in letting you decide which frames are best for you. The only downfall - they don't ask you if you want the Opto-map, which is an extra charge. So make sure you are given the option. I don't think it's necessary unless you have trouble with your eyes. And they don't give you a prescription unless you ask. So ASK! I would recommend them right away to my friends and family! read more

I have been a client of Dr. Cummins for many, many years. The first doctor who got me in contact lenses. He and his staff are so friendly and knowledgeable! He really takes his time to ensure the best quality care. A few years back i went to another eye doctor (only because of the urgency and how close they were to where I live) biggest mistake! Let me preface this by saying I was a patient of Dr. Cummins for 15 years. I was reluctant to change eye docs due to loyalty but it was a huge mistake. He had been charging me excessively this entire time and probably committing insurance fraud. He would charge me a contact lens exam fee, etc and I'd walk out of there paying a lot of money every single time. We've always had very good insurance so it didn't make sense to me. He even swindled me into buying Amway vitamins one time.. I have a strong rx and requested custom contacts at one point. He dragged his feet and seemed to not want to do it so I eventually gave up and reordered the subpar generic lenses he suggested. I put up with poor vision because he never gave me any other options. I finally switched doctors and I finally realized how incompetent and unprofessional Dr. Cummins has been this whole time. My new doctor got me fitted with custom lenses and my vision is incredible. The craziest part is her office billed it so it was completely covered. I paid a 20 copay and nothing more. No shady contact exam fees. Nothing but incredible skill and care. Stay away from Dr. Cummins. I'm embarrassed that it took me so long to make the change. read more

We came in for our yearly visit and once again it was a great experience. The office staff is very understanding with my kids who have tons of energy! The Dr is great. He is patient with the kids & can keep them focused while still getting the appointment done in a very reasonable amount of time. I'm always impressed with the cleanliness of the office & if I need help with the kids during my portion of the appointment, the office staff helps me out. read more

I called this morning because I had forgotten to schedule an appointment the day before and asked how long it would take for a walk in. She asked me kindly what time I could be in the office and scheduled me for 1:40. I arrived there filled up some paperwork and then Judy took pictures of my eye with a cool machine. Then I waited for Dr. Cummings. It took a while to see him maybe like 15-20 mins. But I understand that I did wait last minute for my appointment. He did my eye exam. Super nice guy! and then Judy helped me pick my glasses! She's super helpful! I have been coming here since 7+ years and the staff is awesome! The office is clean! And if you have any questions the staff is always willing to help!! read more

What a great eye doctor experience. I thought it an odd request when I asked to make a "family" appointment but without a laugh or snicker they set an appointment for my 22 y.o. daughter and I so we were able to be seen at the same time. This was super accommodating because even though my daughter is grown (and type 1 diabetic), she really needed an eye appointment and I was able to help her out and pay for our services together. Dr. Cummins did spend a lot of time on each of us however I felt this experience was exceptionally thorough and professional, more so than the previous eye doctor I had seen. He has a great sense of humor and we enjoyed lots of laughs, which made the appointment time seem to fly by. I am pleased that he spent so much time on us and we felt extremely cared for, that making our vision absolutely as perfect as it can be with corrective lenses was a priority. I highly recommend Dr. Cummins at Rancho San Diego Vision Care. We are so glad to have a new eye doctor and are excited to pick up our new glasses. Thank you Dr. Cummins! read more

I don't know why but I just felt uncomfortable the entire time I was here. I had an appointment and I was in there for over an hour! Never had that kind of experience before. Dr. Cummins kept on having to go over my eyes multiple times for whatever reason it was. I guess it was because I have a very high eye prescription. Him taking his time didn't make me uncomfortable. What made me uncomfortable was that his assistant came in during my appointment who needed something signed and was like, "such and such doesn't want to get her glasses from here." and Dr. Cummins was kinda just like puzzled and questioning her hard like "why?" He finally gave up and took the paper and signed it real jittery like. He then turned back towards me and continued with my exam. I was then done. They wanted me to pick out frames when I was only there for an eye exam. I might've mistakenly marked it on the fill out form, but I went with picking frames anyways. The lady who helped me picked frames was nice but ultimately it felt like she was in charge of picking my frames and not me. They were all name brands and nothing real affordable or cheap. Needless to say, I didn't purchase my frames from here. The staff including Dr. Cummins was nice to me, but I've had better treatment at Eye Styles after my visit from there. read more

Dr Cummins and his staff are all great at what they do. Dr Cummins opened his office for me at 4:00am for me on a weekend when I called for his help, panicked about a small foreign particle in my eye. And he took great care of me then, and followed up with me and he truly cares. I recommend him to everybody I know in need. Thank you Dr Cummins. read more

Dr. Cummins is a unprofessional individual who scams new clients and who is clearly coming fraud. For a regular eye exam with contact and eye glass fitting he was charging me $370 dollars! This "doctor" charges a ridiculous amount for something that cost less. I have insurance and with my insurance I still had to pay $250 dollars! Staff were all incompetent in providing accurate information, they never explained agreement nor explained any of the paperwork that I finally got at the end of a 2 hours eye exam. After realizing that Dr. Cummins was charging me for a $39 training and teaching how to put contact after I have already been wearing contacts for 3 years and a $20 fee for solution (Costco sales it for $12)! And a $105 additional fee for follow-up, was when I walked away. After contacting my insurance and complaining about this "business" they were able to work with this "doctor" and I was able to go somewhere else where I got what I needed, a contact exam and an eye exam. NEVER EVER Go to this business who scams people. read more

I am very unhappy with the service and treatment I received from Dr. Cummings and his staff! I asked on the phone before scheduling my appointment ALL the fees I'd have to pay for, less my insurance coverage. He hit me up right away for a $40 eye scan thing, and I declined. I had an early morning appointment and this visit took over 2 1/2 hours! I told them over and over that I had a very important meeting, and they dilated my pupils! I left blind!!!!! I couldn't see anything and I had to drive and I was LATE!!!! I have been back 4-5 times SINCE and the last time he used the wrong chart on me!!! He ran tests that were unnecessary and he has me trying "new lenses" and didn't tell me that I was having to pay $30 EACH TIME until my balance was $120!!! When I protested the ladies told me it was my fault for not looking at my BILLS in the mail they supposedly sent me! ALL I WANT IS MY CONTACTS and they ladies are so rude to me now because I have become so frustrated calling and receiving no return calls! read more

Disappointing first visit. I scheduled an appointment with the front desk staff for a general eye exam ($5 copay with my insurance). Dr. Cummins asked me why I'm here when he first walked into the room, I said a general eye exam. I was surprised to be charged $50 at the end. I was informed I'm being charged for a $45 eye contact exam and my regular $5 copay. I was not looking for a contact exam or was I informed by the doctor or his staff that I will be getting a contact exam let alone that I will be charged extra. I was later asked back into the exam room where the doctor interrogated me on why I did not want to pay for something that I didn't ask for in the very beginning. He later waived the fee for the contact exam that I did not ask for and took back the sample contact solution he had given me. Had the fee been politely waived, I would not be writing this review because I understand everyone makes mistakes. The level of disrespect from the doctor in the exam room was completely uncalled for and inappropriate. There needs to be more communication and honestly in this office. I felt their main goal was to get the most money out of a patient as possible and not the well being of their patients. read more
