We did order the chips and salsa ($7) to start and these were such crispy fresh chips. My kids My daughter got a chicken quesadilla that was easily made dairy free with vegan cheese for $2 extra. Anyone with some dietary restrictions will appreciate the vegan options galore! I tried the enchilada trio ($19) which had a fantastic mole enchilada. Great flavor and the right amount of spice. My husband tried the steak street tacos ($17) which tasted great and he was pleasantly surprised. They seem to have a great happy hour special but we were a tad early for that. Immediately walking in, we were greeted and seated right away. The restaurant was tastefully designed and there was a lot of seating to where it didn't feel too crowded. Looking at the menu, there were a bunch of options to choose from. They have an extremely extensive menu with many drink options. I know this place has been around for so long but I thought it was *only* vegan. The menu has mostly options that can be vegan and/or gluten-free, but for an omnivore like me, you can still get meat for your protein. The restaurant itself has an inviting and relaxing ambiance, and my friend and I had excellent service. At the time, there was one person handling several tables, but she frequently came around to check in and refill waters. I ordered the carne asada bowl, which I would order again. I used the orange hot sauce on the table, giving it a little bit of an extra kick, and it was perfect. I also ordered the passion fruit iced tea; though I didn't really taste the passion fruit come through, you get free refills, and it was still refreshing. She helped answer our questions from the menu. I started with the ginger-rita with honey and a tajin rim. It was a light and refreshing drink. Obsessed! Ranchos Cocina was excellent! We came for a late lunch and to watch some World Cup. The waitress was friendly and got our party of 7 seated quickly. They brought us chips with several types of salsa. Every salsa was at least a little hot, and the chips were super warm and fresh-tasting. I had the Papa Ranchos, the potatoes were cooked perfectly and the salsa ranchera was delicious. My wife and I have been here before and loved it. Since we had my mother in-law visiting from out of town, this was one of the places we recommended and wanted to show off our awesome San Diego food! AMAZING I'm visiting for the weekend and we were struggling to find a good brunch spot but most places in the area had over the top waiting times . I'm so happy we were able to stumble into this restaurant on our way to another one ! The ambiance called to us almost instantly . This place is beautifully decorated with plants of all kinds and familiar Mexican adornments. You can definitely tell this place is curated. The service was just as amazing , Carmen was very welcoming and immediately attended to us. We were so caught up with taking photos of the place that the wait time for the food was not long. As for the food , It was very delicious! We had ordered the Vegan Horchata Latte and by far the best iced coffee I've had . We even got some to go ! So, we're walking out of the San Diego zoo not having eaten anything all day. Asked the young man at the gate for his nearby restaurant recommendation. He said if you like Mexican (which we do), you HAVE to try Ranchos Cocina. Everything about this wonderful Mexican restaurant is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! It wasn't very busy (an early Monday evening) so we got a table right away. We also got one of the best waitresses ever, Alex. She was phenomenal. Alex answered all of our questions and gave her menu recommendations. We took her up on both. First having the guacamole & chips (which in my opinion is one of the most important food representations of a Mexican restaurant) Then my wife and I both had the DE MOLE Enchiladas with Shredded Chicken (as recommended by Alex) I've never had DE MOLE and it was absolutely INCREDIBLE. On a side note, Alex also was extremely nice in cleaning up the broken bottle of salsa that got knocked down on the floor. Alex was so gracious in sitting down and writing out quite a few recommendations of things to do and see for us during the rest of our 5 day stay in San Diego. Ranchos Cocina has a very homey vibe interior and I really liked the overall feel inside of the restaurant. One of the things that makes them so unique is that so much of their menu can be made vegan/vegetarian. So this is a great place to bring both meat-eaters and non-meat eaters. The menu is quite extensive so I had to take more time than usual to order. Service throughout the night was impeccable and even one of the workers gave us some additional complimentary chips with our food which was very much appreciated. We started with the Queso Meso dip which was really delicious! Topped with some chorizo, this was a great starter. My only complaint is that it came only 5-6 tortilla chips. By the time we ate all the chips, there was still a decent amount of dip left. I orderd the Trio Enchiladas and each of them were very delicious! My favorite was the one with the red guajillo sauce on it. That sauce was sooo good! The presentation was beautiful as well. My gf also got the San Diego Sunrise Breakfast Burrito and subsituted it with vegan carne asada. I had a couple of bites and I thought that it was alright. Today is Friday; July 17, 2026. Our server was a woman in her early 70's extremely rude and unprofessional. We dared move to a different table than she assisgned us to (small wobbly two seater to a four seater table) and her disgusting attitude took off from there. She actually involved patrons at two other tables, commenting on how we changed tables! (mind you there were plenty of seats for other guests, noone was left without a place to sit) what in the world??? This woman exhibited a facial expression of annoyance and exasperation when I asked for a refill of chips for the table. She smiled a saccarin sweet smile as she asked if we would like a box when we were still eating! Then came back to the table a little bit later with that same fake smile and asked if we were ready to leave, there was still food on our plates and we had not said anything to indicate that we were done. I don't even know what just happened this evening, I have never experienced such disrespectful and rude service like that before in my life. I can't believe that after all of this I tipped this woman 15%, this makes me want to kick myself, my thought process at the moment was well she brought the food and cleared the plates and I always tip, but the more I think about our experience what the heck was I thinking? We randomly stumbled upon this place for lunch today for the first time and it was sooooo good. The interior decor is similar to the Mexican restaurants in old town so it was super cute.
