I really enjoy shopping at this commissary & just AFB commissaries in general. As an Army Veteran, I know all too well just how good the Air Force has it though, lol. This commissary tends to have better options than the one on FT Sam. I have found a lot more of the staple items that I like to get, here at Randolph. Also, any of the times that I have shopped here have not been too crowded, which is nice. The store is very well stocked & clean. The layout is not too bad either & better than other commissaries that I have shopped in. Generally speaking, commissary pricing is usually close to what you would pay out on the normal economy, however I have seen some items that have been higher than say, Walmart or HEB. But, the trade off is that you're not paying tax on your groceries here, so it kind of evens out at times. I also appreciate the fact that the times that I have been here, the self-checkout line has not been insanely long. I imagine it probably can be though, depending on what time of day you are shopping. Fortunately, I live about equal distance between here & FT Sam, so I can easily go to either, since they both have different offerings. However, this will definitely be my go to. read more

I have been in Commissaries in Europe, the East Coast, the West Coast Alaska and Hawaii, Randolph AFB is the first Commissary I have been in that has ever caused me to think twice. I will no longer purchase anything their except canned goods, purchased milk "spoiled, hamburger meat spoiled, otc medicines honestly three years past their use by date, the last straw a package of black forest ham opened it at home and to say it smelled is putting it lightly. I don't know what is going on with this particular commissary whether it's the management or the employees just don't care but i am now very careful about purchases from the Randolph Commissary and I sincerely recommend others to be careful before they buy also. read more

I love going to the commissary! It's amazing how low some of their prices are. Cereal, TP, and paper towels are a LOT less expensive than at HEB or Walmart. They also have wonderful sales. This summer, I got a 150oz Tide laundry soap for $15, which is less than half of the price at HEB or on Amazon. And, they often have double coupons. Sure, they don't always have everything, and I do end up going to HEB for a couple of things once and a while, but it's usually a very big savings for me and my family. Everyone is helpful, and the other customers are friendly, and I often stop to talk with them. Obviously, it's only for the military and their families, so that keeps out the riff raff like you encounter at Walmart. Haha JK!! read more

Clean and well-stocked grocery. Sometimes, the app doesn't show the right aisle or it'll say it's in stock when it really isn't, so just plan accordingly for another grocery store just in case you can't find what you need. I live on base, which is the ONLY reason I go in. Their hours are horrible, opening late on weekends and closing early every day, usually before I'm able to leave work. The only okay part is the beef selection, the chicken section is usually picked over and dirty. Prices aren't better than H-E-B or Walmart, and shopping environment is like being in a 70s supermarket minus the smoke. When I do have the misfortune of going, I have less than a 50% shot at actually finding what I'm there for with how poorly they're stocked. I wish the DoD would just shut down the commissary in most places (leaving them open overseas and in remote locations) and give the money to the military in any other way. read more

I have gotten lower prices on groceries with great service. The click to go service here has been great. Thanks to the click to go service, which kept me out of store during covid and buying spur of the moment in store items which are over family already budgeted for food purchases. Most items that my family normally buys are $1 or more less each item expensive if purchased at the commissary vs outside for profit grocery stores. That alone normally saves me $35 or more savings per trip at the commissary. This is especially true of meat, eggs, bread, prepared meals, snacks, paper/bathroom products, and pet items. Staff is very friendly and eager to help. Manager has helped me with special orders during holiday season. Great place to shop! read more

Randolph Air Force Base Commissary is a nice groceries store to shop at. I am able to get a few German things,which is always a treat! We buy our meat at the commissary but stay away from the produce because it seems as if the produce is not fresh and goes bad quickly. I have had bad experience with a male cashier. This review is probably more useful for those in the military community. If you've been to one commissary, you've been to most of them! I will confess, it was a little hard for me to shop off base when I first moved here. Things are just a little different in the civilian world, especially when the military bubble has been everything you've known growing up. Here are some pointers from what I've experienced: Go Local! The produce section in the Commissary here sucks. Everything seems to go bad fast. The plantains in particular (Mostly Colombian household here) are oftentimes pretty small, and more expensive than what you can get outside the base. Do yourself a favor and get some big and thick plantains at your local HEB (and your veggies and fruits). For those who just PCS'ed to the San Antonio area, HEB does this cute thing where they put little Texas symbols on things that are sourced from our very own state! The commissary lacks in providing locally sourced products, but makes up more in national brands that are priced cheaper. The meat also comes out to a better deal as well. As far as international foods, the commissary carries a better variety of asian products than I've seen at local HEB's and Walmart which I'm thankful for (as well as some European products). Their sushi is okay, but wasn't the best. The staff tend to be standoffish and unengaged, it's pretty much yawn city as far as customer city. I've never had a bad experience, but sometimes I do feel like I'm a bother if I ever need my meat sliced or a question answered. This isn't my favorite place to come to, but I can't deny some of the savings if you have access to this grocery store. read more

Overall not a bad commissary. The negative first, the bathrooms are not handicap accessible. I once had to use the bathroom while shopping and could not get my wheelchair into the coustomer bathroom and was let in back to the employees bathroom and that was not accessible either. The vegetables are terrible and you are better off going to HEB. Many products are over priced. The good. The meats are a good bargain and you can get Asian foods of a decent variety and competitive price. The store is always clean and well maintained. read more

While I understand the produce area could use improvement and possibly the attitudes of a few of the workers, I've never had a bad experience here and have found they really have a lot of selection compared to even the local grocery stores. I like stocking up on Tex Mex seasonings whenever I'm in town. The prices are much cheaper than downtown. You can request specific items be special ordered. I have made 2 trips to the commissary recently during this time and have witnessed the constant restocking of products, helpful assistance from everyone, cleanliness, and a sense of calm within the store. With so many H-E-B grocery stores in the San Antonio area, it's kind of unfair to expect the commissary to compare. Nonetheless, I won't be coming back to the commissary. To be a little more specific, if you want good produce don't come here. If saving money is the ultimate concern and not the shopping experience itself, then you might find some success here. I will note that I have found many of the products I shop for to be cheaper at H-E-B, even taking taxes into consideration. Likewise, I have had a few randomly bad experiences with dairy and produce from here and I haven't experienced that elsewhere. read more

Produce section is small - and a VERY small section for organic produce. We stopped here after moving to TX and basically had to restock everything except some pantry items. One thing that really bothered me - all the fresh pork on the meat counter was Tyson brand. I don't buy Tyson brand anything. Also, they didn't carry the bread we normally buy, not even a space for it on the shelf. They had other types of the bread (Orowheat) but not the country white bread. Weird. They also had a very limited deli section. I think this commissary needs serious updating. We won't be back. There are plenty of other options for groceries in the area. Randolph commissary is always nice and clean. Of course everything is a little cheaper than buying off base. For example Nature's Own bread is a dollar cheaper in the commissary in comparison to HEB & WALMART. Oscar Meyer turkey bacon is a dollar cheaper right now too. So, it really helps me a lot shopping here than going any other place. The best part is shopping during case lot sales...you can really get a lot of bargains shopping during this time and you can use coupons on discounted case lot items. The commissary is awesome! Everything is a little cheaper and often times I can find items here that are generally hard to find in another grocery store. Updating review - I'm dropping it two stars because I feel like I always have to go to the self check out. Y'all know what I'm talkin bout... Yes, supporting young military brats, I see the reasoning behind tipping the bagger kids & having them escort me and my groceries outside, but c'mon. I'm relatively young and in good shape... They've loaded my items onto the carts meant for having a bagger escort my things.... Even when I'm wearing my gym clothes? Yeah... I just worked out... So therefore I have no energy left to handle my own groceries? .... Or they see me as more money in their pockets. Why do I have to tell them I can carry my own bags everytime? This puts me in an uncomfortable position.... Also, if I withdraw extra $, the cashier always gives it to me in smaller bills... So I feel like I have to tip the kid who put my stuff in bags. Don't they make an hourly rate just like HEB baggers? That's why I opt for bagging my own items. It is a good service for elderly, pregnant or someone with an injury... 40 consecutive years in the military between my wife and I. Yes commissaries are/were necessary overseas yet times are changing! Here in the States the Commissaries cannot/will not compete with local Stores! The Produce section here at Randolph has damaged, sometimes frozen during shipment and terribly small produce! I am sure most big box groceries will not offer small produce! The vegetables spoil quickly if it isn't already,()n the Shelf)! Milk out dates are no where near what the local groceries have! This commissary is constantly out of products so shopping down town is a necessity! Plus the variety is bigger down town! When you consider the Surcharge and a tip, there is absolutely no reason to shop at the commissary! Sure, some items are cheaper, but I DONT USE THOSE ITEMS! That BS about 30% cheaper or 30% savings is just that,BS! There is absolutely no reason for Commissaries Stateside! While I'm at it! The Handicapped Carts! 1. Worst carts you could buy! 2. No one monitors the carts so they are not charged! 3. What moron parks them so a Handicapped cannot reach the electric plug and requires some one to climb over three carrots get to the plug! Randolph is the closest commissary to me but this would apply to most commissaries. Overall you can't be the commissary prices due to no taxes (which also applies to the PX/BX) but a surcharge is added, that pays for the store's upkeep. My main complaint is not having any fresh seafood. I stock up on paper products, toiletries,kitchen items and even basic meats like chicken and hamburger meat, because I walk out with $100 in groceries where I would normally pay $150-$200 at HEB, Target or Walmart for the same groceries due to higher prices and taxes added. You can expect to tip the bagger, who, unless you're in the express line, will bag and transport your groceries, to your car. read more

The produce section is not worth the trip. The non existent organic section. I don't know how long the produce has been sitting there. They don't last more than 3 days when u take them home. There are lots of brand name items to shop for. There are some that are cheaper than off base but remember you pay 5% surcharge of the stated price before discount. Being a seasons shopper of the commissary system (38 years) I have seen the entire system break down. When I first began shopping, there were people in the store, walking around (red vests) asking if they could help you find something, or help the little old lady get something off the top shelf. There was a presence of customer service. Then, those folks disappeared and everything has gone down hill. The aisles are narrow, yet the shelves are stocked all through the day, rather than at night when the store is empty. Battling for space to shop while a stocker has the aisle or the shelf you need blocked is frustrating, especially when they make no effort to move! And most recently, the commissary is trying to become like a supermarket. It was never intended to be that. So now they have given up brands of various items which have been carried for years, for their own "brand" much like Great Value is at Walmart. I have found the products to be less in quality. I do not buy meat at the commissary. The price in town is close. And the taste of the meat I purchase in town is much better. I do save money on over the counter items (aspirin, vitamins, and such) but milk is grossly over priced to that of stores in town. Overall, I think I probably end up saving the 25% they claim I'll save. read more

Yes some of the produce is lacking and the organic section is small, but I find the prices much cheaper than HEB. Eggs, yogurt, and cheese are cheaper and for whatever reason I find that HEB doesn't carry Sargento cheese . In regards to the commissary, I've been told that if you want specialty items you can request them. They seem to sell out of poultry pretty quick. The bakery is the best bakery I've been to in a while and like it much better than HEB or Walmart. The employees that work there really know how to bake. Overall I think it is worth it to go here. I still go to HEB to get stuff like organic produce and some specialty items but I've easily spent 200 bucks or more there on just a few items. I love the commissary but I hate to say that I've had a couple of bad experiences here. 80% of the time I use self check out mainly because I'm those people that never carries cash to tip, I hate when baggers go a little crazy with the bags n I'm left with 50 plastic bags sitting in my kitchen and lastly because I almost never purchase over 25 things. I also noticed that you get better service checking out in the regular lines. At self check out most of the time the employee is always in a crabby mood. One time one of the machines gave out And the employee was over here yelling about " this is why I hate working self check out , ain't nobody like working check out because of this, they always changing things blah blah fml," like that was supposed to make the situation better. Very unprofessional . And another time this chick was all up in my personal space just watching me scan my items, always the same chick. Does this face look like a thief ? Lol. And seriously I thought this was self check out. IDK maybe it's just me but I'm not gonna rate the commissary overall because of 3 or 4 employees. Used 2 work 4 this place, and was just wack that even though I worked for this place, I still couldn't even buy n e thing from here. Besides, I would rather buy the stuff at the Walmart or HEB down the road, it's much cleaner and more fresh foods. This commissary behind the scenes, a fruit falls on the floor, they put it back on the stand without even cleaning it off.
