This review is more based on the customer service, not necessarily dr brown. I actually didn't see dr brown for an eye exam because I was told I needed to wait several weeks to see him for an apt. I really needed glasses because it was starting to bug me that I couldn't clearly see what was on my computer screen. I went to another store and was able be seen for an eye exam immediately. I just didn't like the selection of frames. I went back here with my prescription because I liked a pair of frames they had. The customer service rep was rude and stated that I needed to pay an extra 50$ because I didn't wait to be seen by dr brown. She said if I had just the exam here, it would've saved me a lot of money. Why even tell me that, for one thing? It was just a weird sort of gotcha. For some reason, I still went through with my purchase (I really like the frames). They had to special order my size and send them to a lab to get the lenses placed. I waited another two weeks. I paid almost 300$ with coverage and realized after the fact that the lenses don't sit properly in the frame. Every time I clean them with solution, there's little beads of fluid that can't be wiped free as they are in between a gap in the frame. Wouldn't recommend the price, quality, or the customer service. read more

You actually see the doctor, who asks lots of questions and spends time with you. Like a country doctor, and what medicine used to be... a welcome change from what you normally find. Yes, he has all the new hi-tech tools, but it's the fact that he is there and explaining to you what they found with those tools that makes it better. No upsell trying to sell you something you don't need. Since I didn't need glasses, I can't say anything about that part of the process. Highly recommend. read more

My husband and I refer to Dr. Brown as "the nice doctor!" After dealing with kaisers' unprofessionalism and sluggishness throughout the pandemic, it is no less than a joy to visit Dr. Brown's office. It is not only a beautifully kept physical establishment, but some of the Women who assist with choosing and adjusting frames are priceless! (especially when you need some objective opinion about what looks best on you!) if they don't have the frames you want, they can help you find something better in a catalog, so just ask. Dr. Brown reminds us of an old-time country doctor, always taking as much time as necessary for the needs of the patient. I recently started to lose my vision and my Kaiser Eye Doctor was absolutely useless. Dr. Brown made room in his schedule for me, diagnosed the problem with a special test, gave me printouts of the paperwork Kaiser should have done, and directed me in how to proceed with Kaiser. It was a really scary time for me and Dr. Brown was the one who made me feel watched over and cared for. He even said I could call him anytime if I needed to talk. What a guy. I awoke today Sat to a worsening now really bad sty in my eye. I called early and they squeezed me in on a Sat! I really didn't think it wise to wait until Monday. He was thorough and reassuring and gave me a prescription for eyedrops and oral antibiotics and told me to have the pharmacy call him if one of the items was too expensive and he would substitute something else. So sure enough it was expensive but even worse the pharmacy didn't have it til Monday and stated most pharmacies wouldn't even have it in stock either. I definitely didn't want to wait so the pharmacy called him. Dr. Brown called back soon after and changed the prescription to one that was in stock yay! The front office was very courteous and adjusted my sunglasses. I have no complaints about them whatsoever like other reviewers had noted. I expected I might have to wait and that would've been fine but I didn't. Where else can you get this kind of service especially on a Saturday? Great staff! Great selection and the best optometrist! I don't have eye exams as often as I should considering I need glasses in order to see, however, Dr. Brown and I go way back. My mom brought me here as a teenager and as an adult with insurance I can't imagine going anywhere else. I was able to make an appointment same day and be seen in under an hour, in and out. The staff and doctor were very friendly and able to answer any questions I had. One really cool thing they do now is paperless everything. Very high tech stuff they had around there! All the equipment was clean and effective and high tech. The selection of frames was enormous it takes up pretty much all of the showroom. Everything from Prada to Ray Ban. I don't usually wear really expensive glasses because they get beat up but I found some cute Emporio Armani frames that were within my insurance coverage for $155. I paid extra for the anti-reflection lenses too. They offer all kinds of tints for sunglasses as well. I've made a follow up appointment to talk to the doctor about contacts in so excited! I wish i could actually be writing a review from the doctor. but i didn't even get farther than making an appt. This office has a 0 policy for being 1 min late. But the asst when booking said they usually run late up to 45 mins late. anyways i was 6 mins late for my 8:30am appt after telling them when i was booking i will be cutting it close to having to drop my 2.5 year old at daycare down the street. I am a mother of a newborn and a 2.5 year old so as many of you mothers out there understand only being 6 mins late to an appt with traffic etc in the morning is pretty darn good. without hesitation the secretary told me she needed to reschedule. my time is just as valuable as the doctors and as being self employed myself i do underhand from my own clients when things happen that cannot be controlled and this was one of those mornings. so clearly they don't need my business and i will not return this office. i chose this office based off the reviews before and they take my insurance. i should have paid more attention to the 1 star reviews but since they were a few years ago i didn't pay any mind. but clearly nothing has changed with the actual staff. so the dr could be great but the customer service HORRIBLE AND NOT UNDERSTANDING and just DONT BE LATE. EVEN IF THEY ARE RUNNING LATE AND EXPECT YOU TO SIT THERE For 45 mins as if your time isn't as valuable. read more

I have always had great service at this office. Each and every time Dr. Brown has been awesome and very friendly. He always answers any questions and is extremely helpful. His staff were very helpful with helping me pick out glasses that worked just right for me. I understand they are not the cheapest but that is alright for the service they provide. They understood the insurance coverage and helped explain so that I would get the best bang for my buck. They also did not try to sell me on items or upgrades I would not need. I have been coming here for my eye exam and contacts for many years. It's disappointing to see some poor reviews for Dr. Brown as I have always received great service. Insurance definitely makes the pricing of glasses or contacts way more affordable but even without the cost is minimal in my opinion. Dr Brown is very detailed during the exam and I like that he asks a lot of questions about how your vision is progressing. I am very particular about the doctors I select and I strongly recommend anyone looking for a new eye doctor to check this place out. I have been going to Dr. Brown since I was a teenager. I have to say that Dr. Brown himself is a very nice gentleman, always very patient, and I have always felt in good hands when I see him. Recently I thought I had a contact stuck in the back of my eye and had to see him on an emergency visit. Turns out the contact I believed to be stuck likely fell out but scratched my eye and made me feel like it was still stuck. I think it was really awesome that the emergency visit wasnt very expensive at all and I didnt have to wait long for him to check out my eye. However, this was probably the ONLY visit I have been to Dr. Brown's where the staff at the counter was even remotely nice to me. All other times it didnt matter if I wore expensive clothing, shoes, and carried a designer purse... I could probably have walked in with Prince William and they'd probably still look down their noses at me. I try being very polite to customer service people, so I find it really annoying when the gesture is not returned. Anyhow, I go to this office for Dr. Brown alone, and I really think he is a very good Optometrist who knows what's up. I suppose this review is really more on his store in general, not him (otherwise I'd given a better rating.) Additionally, I really like the selection of frames that they offer here. Lots of modern styles, mostly designer. They even started offering Betsey Johnson frames recently. And in the past I had purchased my Bebe frames there. read more

People stay away from this place! I had an eye exam there about two months ago and I knew my vision was terrible. I asked the doctor if I had astigmatism and he told me that I barely had any. However, yesterday I had an eye exam with a different doctor and he told me that my astigmatism was the worst he had seen in his 26 years of practice! This made me very upset, I don't know why doctor brown lied to me. Furthermore, they did not give me my eye glass prescription I had to go and request it. My eye glass prescription clearly shows how bad my astigmatism is. On top of that, they never have any appointments available. I was requesting an appointment for a contact fitting. Last time I called to request an appointment they did not have any available until July. All the other places I had called, had appointments available within a week. read more

I forgot to order my contacts in time and was in need for urgent appointment. I called and they were able to squeeze me in for a last miniute appointment. The office was clean and the staff was very courteous. Dr.Brown was very polite and was pleasant to talk to. Throughout the exam, he explained the reason for the exam and what he was looking for. I did not purchase any contacts from the store, though, because it was cheaper to order it online. But Dr.Brown was very understanding and just wrote me a prescription. And I only had to pay my usual co-pay and not this obsurd "contact fitting fee" like other stores (see my other review). I highly recommend him for anyone looking for a new optometrist. read more

He is very patient and thorough and takes the time to answer any questions you may have throughout the entire exam. I had been a patient of Dr. Brown's for several years. I chose this office because of the proximity to my house. I noticed the poor customer service and rudeness of the front office staff right away. I would have just put up with it however the final straw was the rudeness I experienced from Dr. Brown as well. I let him know that I was buying my contacts from another vendor because of the lower costs. Well when he asked me what the costs were I told him frankly what I was paying. For some reason he started arguing with me telling me that it wasn't possible that I was getting my contacts for that price! I insisted that I was and really I would have no reason to lie about it. Anyway it was awkward and ridiculous. I do not feel the need to deal with the attitude of the front office staff or Dr. Brown himself any longer. read more

Usually there is some sort of guarantee that what you expect for an exam and fitting of glasses will result in better vision. The exam was somewhat limited compared to what I have had at other OD offices. My longtime eye Dr. retired and I didn't hit it off with the new lady who took his place. So I tried Dr. Brown. What a joke! He tried twice to get my prescription correct, but each time was a disaster. I told him the new glasses he fitted are worse than my old ones I wore to get here. I can't wear these new ones - practically useless. Driving home I may cause an accident. Dr. Brown just laughed. I didn't think it was very funny. Now Dr. Brown tells me to come back in a couple of weeks after getting used to my new glasses - which I can't see out of. I returned in two weeks expecting another exam and proper fitting of new glasses, as the ones he gave me were too blurry to wear. Instead, to my complete shock, the staff insisted I pay for everything up front, including for a new exam. Huh? I had already paid in full for everything that was done two weeks previously (exam & glasses). I said that my understanding was they had a satisfaction guarantee policy. The desk gal checked with Dr. Brown and after several minutes she returned and said Dr. Brown did the best he could and there must be something wrong with me. What? Really? I had some choice words in mind but held back. I LEFT without having a second exam. Two months later I received a bill for $150. I sent a note with the bill saying I wasn't paying it. Several months after that I got a collection letter from some outsourced agency now trying to collect $180. This scumbag of a OD DOES NOT guarantee his work and you better be prepared to PAY the weasel even if he doesn't fit you correctly for glasses ... that you can actually see out of. STAY AWAY FROM THIS JERK! Thank goodness there are so many good ODs you don't have to go to one that is INCOMPETENT. And wants to be paid for being INCOMPETENT! A follow-up: I went to a "discount" eye exam and glasses place (yes, I was hesitant), AND HAD FANTASTIC RESULTS! A thorough exam and fitting of new glasses for UNDER $100. I am happy, except I'm waiting to see if the CLOWN DR. BROWN will follow through trying to collect on an old bill - which he did nothing to charge me for. read more

I am not a patient of Dr. Brown's, I see another ophthalmologist every few months as I have glaucoma. Recently I felt pain and excessive tearing in one eye, and noticed an inflamed swollen area next to the pupil. I called my ophthalmologist, but it was Saturday and I got the answering service. They referred me to doctor on call, who could not see me. Not wanting to wait until Monday to see my regular doctor, I started searching for someone who would be open on a Saturday. I had never seen this doctor, nor even knew this office existed. I found them on the web and they were the only ones who could see me on a Saturday. Dr Brown's office staff listened to my concerns, and even though they were booked solid this Saturday, they worked me in his schedule. Dr. Brown was wonderful. After a thorough exam he assured me it was nothing serious. He gave me eye drops to take and a phone number to contact him on Sunday if my symptoms were not improved. I would never go to Dr. Brown. The doctor is very good, but his staff is horrible. They have tried to charge us for a prescription that we never received. They made and error and gave us glasses without prescriptions and charged the full amount. The billing person is so rude and unethical. Last year I had my prescription for VDT (computer lenses) filled here and found a wonderful pair of frames that didn't break the bank and Dr. Brown's staff got the order placed efficiently and acccurately. I returned yesterday for my annual exam and to be fitted for contact lenses that will work with my multiple vision issues. Dr. Brown gave me an extremely thorough exam including a retina scan and took the time to explain the parts of the retina visible in the photograph and what issues he had checked for (luckily, he found no issues). At the end of the full exam Dr. Brown spent a few minutes synopsizing the findings from the overall exam usinging a large diagram of an eye to help ensure I understood the information. He also provided the benefits and negatives of contacts for my eyes, gave me several options and explained the follow up plan. I'm very thankful to have found Dr. Brown, he is through, has a very pleasant manner and takes an educational perspective on working with patients. Dr. Brown also has a very nice frame selection very attractively merchandised. He sells some high end brands and some middle of the road price wise. He has a great selection of sunwear. The optician demonstrated good style sense...and was very helpful in helping my husband pick out some very goodlooking frames. Dr. Brown's office is open on Saturdays. Completely satisfied with Dr. Brown's office and highly encourage those seeking a new O.D. check out his office in Gold River. read more

I have had eye exams before but Dr Brown performed the most thorough one I have ever had, and detected conditions that I've surely had for some time but recent exams at another discount optical did not detect. 2015 I decided to try contacts for the first time after 10 years of wearing glasses, and I had no idea what to expect. Dr. Brown's office has always been helpful, but this time I was so thankful for the patience of Josephine and Dr. Brown as it took me a little longer to figure out how to get the contacts in for the first time. I've been going to Dr. Brown for the last six years and after my last visit, I will no longer see him again. Dr. Brown himself is friendly and knowledgeable, his staff (minus Kim who no longer works there) is terrible. I ordered two sets of glasses the exact same way I did last time (nothing changed). Few days later, Kim calls and tells me there is a $36 dollar extra charge. I ask why and she can't give me a solid answer and says she'll call me back. I even offered to pay for 1/2 of the extra charge even through I got the same prescription. Few days after that, Tiffany calls and she couldn't explain the extra charge also telling me that I was responsible for the extra charge. She was rude, unprofessional and would interrupt me while I was talking. I have a 15 month old and she began to fall apart while I was on the phone which irritated Tiffany and I had to hang up. A week later Tiffany calls me and tells me that my sunglass order was canceled because I would pay for the added charge (which was their fault). She told me that my eye glasses were ready to pick up and she wanted my credit card information to refund me $126. I told her I wanted a FULL refund since they didn't honor the agreement in their office and she hung up on me. Four days later I get a call from the insurance company saying I have to pay for the eye glasses or they'll take me to small claims court. About a week after that call I receive my glasses and a check for $121. $136 refund for the glasses minus $15 for the shaping fee so I didn't even get back what they promised. I know its only $5 but this office/company doesn't honor anything they say nor trust them. At NO time did I get a call from Dr. Brown asking me my side or what could be done to resolve the issue going on. Instead he'll believe his rude staff and now has lost a customer for life. I will, no my wife be returning to him and I recommend that you find another eye doctor who cares about his patients and gets involved in disputes. It is with heavy heart that I am writing my first even negative review. I was referred to this office by my MD. The exam was the only positive thing I can report as Dr Brown did not dilate but instead used a camera for the exam. That was wonderful. It went downhill from there. When I went back to pick out glasses my estimate was wrong. When I questioned it I was told it was correct. The front office gal seemed to take it personally. I just wanted it to be correct. I had to have my insurance call to fix it. When the glasses came in weeks later I could not see out of them. Another exam was scheduled (at which the doctor now seemed upset about re examining me),but they reordered glasses and a promised to make it right. When I came to get the new glasses I just wanted to get them and get out. Instead I was presented with an additional bill which was never discussed and additional charges never disclosed in front of a room full of waiting clients. It was humiliating. They were not interested in "making it right" and ultimately lost a client. Not an experience that I will be repeating. read more

Then the Doctor completely missed that I have a tear in my retina (said my retina's looked fine, actually!) and the tear was already diagnosed so i knew about it. Adding to that- he then wanted me to wear contacts that wer half a diaopter off from my prescription! I would not recommend this doctor to anyone!
