As a frequent Alaska Airlines flyer, I've come to appreciate the small but meaningful tradition of being handed a chocolate bar during the flight. I'm also a big fan of Alaska Airlines overall -- they're consistently outstanding, and they take great care of me as a regular passenger. That little chocolate is just one of those thoughtful touches that makes flying with them feel human. On a recent round‑trip flight to California, I was pleasantly surprised on the outbound leg to receive a new chocolate bar from a different maker. Even better, the company was based in Portland, Oregon. The chocolate itself was excellent -- rich, dark, and memorable enough that I found myself thinking about it days later. As a sucker for dark chocolate, this one really stood out. On the return flight home to Portland, I was especially excited to see that bar again. Anyone who flies often knows that sometimes the chocolates don't make it down the aisle -- weather, turbulence, or the occasional oversight. But the weather was perfect, and I was quietly confident. Shortly after takeoff, however, there was a medical emergency on board. Thankfully, a doctor was available, and the Alaska Airlines crew handled the situation with calm, professionalism, and genuine care. For the next two and a half hours, a passenger received medical attention in the middle of the aisle. While I was sincerely concerned for their well‑being, I'll admit -- selfishly -- that I was also thinking about that chocolate bar. What stuck with me most was seeing firsthand how well Alaska Airlines handles a real‑life emergency: calm, cool, collected, and attentive. It was oddly comforting. If someday that person in the aisle is me, my future self will be a little calmer knowing I'm in the hands of true professionals. Fast forward to today: Ranger Chocolate Company heard about my story, and a bar arrived at my door. The world is right again. Cool spot for local chocolate! They had a good selection of bars and treats to take away and an array of hot cocoas and drinks. This is tucked away in a mixed use building so it took a lap for us to find it but the vibe is chill and it felt clean. The service was okay, we weren't proactively greeted or offered any info on the chocolate like some other reviews mention but it wasn't a dealbreaker, just not ideal. A hot chocolate on a cold day...I was at a coffee shop when I got the idea, a coffee shop that has hot chocolate on the menu, but I decided I wanted a GREAT hot chocolate on this frigid January day, so I rode to Ranger. And it delivered! They had a fancier seasonal hot chocolate available, but on my first visit I went for the classic. Just a perfect, strong but not too sweet, complex, creamy cuppa chocolate, perfectly presented. This is their factory, it smells great just walking down the hall toward it. I forgot to finish my review I started. The ambiance was a bit warehouse feel and not very welcoming when I went but it looks like from the pictures they have made some nice improvements. I should go back again now the weather is getting cooler. I did like the set up of my thick drinking chocolate but lost my picture. Ranger recently moved to this much bigger production space in a historic building (remodeled) with space for meetings, relaxing, events, and more. While Ranger's production space is much bigger, its dedicated retail and food/beverage space is not. But that's what this wonderful old-style building is for. Buy your beverage and treat, some chocolate to taste, enjoy, and discuss with the friend you brought along, and then explore this massive and wonderful space to find a place to enjoy your treasures. And treasures they are. Ranger is one of the best craft makers in the USA, and among the top worldwide. (I am one of the judges for the International Chocolate Awards, so I don't make this claim lightly or without basis.) This is not industrial mass-produced chocolate. It's fine craft chocolate made right in this space from cacao beans as the starting point. It's meant to be savored, not munched and gulped like a candy bar. My husband and I discovered Ranger Chocolate on our recent trip to Cannon Beach. While staying at the Stephanie Inn, we did a chocolate tasting and were able to try 6 of their chocolates: Classic Dar, Milk, White, Piura, Nord, and Oregon Sea Salt. Each of them was deliciously smooth and unique. Of the ones we tried I absolutely loved the Milk chocolate and the White chocolate was simply divine!! The chef who led our tasting said we must try the Thai chocolate which he didn't have available, so I'm looking forward to visiting their location in person and discovering more favorites! read more

We went to Ranger Chocolate on a friend's recommendation during our last trip to Portland. While Ranger Chocolate was on the opposite side of the river from where we usually stay, it was fun to explore a new neighborhood. Upon entering the shop, we were greeted with the aroma of fresh chocolate. The storefront was small, but there was cafe seating by the front window as well as a warehouse in the back. The baristas/cashiers were very friendly and knowledgeable about the various bars and their origins - we sampled a few single-origin bars and ended up purchasing a variety to take home. We also ordered their famous Oregon Hot Chocolate to enjoy in the cafe. The hot chocolate was light, frothy, and subtly flavored with hazelnut and fir. Came on a Wednesday morning, and was greeted by an extremely friendly employee offering samples of all the chocolates. Ranger is located in an industrial park in Portland, but they make the space relaxed. Super delicious chocolate smells waft the whole building. Anyways, we got two chocolate bars and the best chocolate chip cookie I have ever had. The cookie chocolate is decadent and rich, and has a sea salt topping that cuts into the sweetness and prevents it from being too sweet. The passion fruit chocolate is also unique, not tasting like a dark chocolate bar I have ever had. Pricey, but well worth the cost. Overall highly recommend stopping by here for a treat! read more

The moment you walk in you smell the chocolate! It's fun to walk into a real chocolate shop and smell the chocolate. I enjoyed the atmosphere and sitting with my micro mocha (8oz mocha) and the smell of coffee and chocolate. I did see drinking chocolates listed in their menu and will have to go back to try those. They have their chocolate bars on sale as well as other chocolate goodies like granola and s'more kits. Being new to Portland, Ranger was on my list of places to try since moving to Portland a couple of months ago. My partner and our friends are chocolate fiends too. So off we went. When we arrived, I was one happy foodie. Not only do they do chocolate but also roast coffee. Two of my favorite things. We were greeted by a display of chocolate covered things. At the counter, my wife and I experienced moderate decision paralysis. Everything looked awesome. Here's what we settled on. Drinking chocolate which came with cinnamon short bread and whipped cream. 10/10 Pear Ginger hand pie. 9/10 Marshmallow 8/10 Chocolate square with dried fruit on top. 10/10 The staff were extremely friendly. It looked cool in there, rustic. The only issues was all "high top" seating. That includes all the tables and chairs. So, it was a bit difficult with some of my physical limits, but I managed. read more

I am so disappointed. We have been regulars at Ranger for a number of years and have always loved their wonderful products and excellent customer service. We have been to the new location several times and it seemed as though the move didn't change any of that however today was a disaster. The mocha we ordered was lacking in flavor. The drinking chocolate was super runny , cold and a little grainy. Also, they used to give a little glass of sparkling water with it but now it just a glass of tap water. The people working said they were new and Amanda (who was awesome) no longer worked there. So sad when things change for the worse. read more

What a find! Ironically I found out about Ranger Chocolate from a Yelp friend who was visiting from Texas! What? Crazy, I know, especially since I drive past this place most everyday on my way home from the gym. Well, now I know and I'm a fan! This bright, light filled and spacious cafe roasts their own coffee. I'm always a fan of a little heat - in my coffee, cocktails and dessert - so for my first visit I went for the Tumeric Cortado that derives it's heat from cayenne. And since it was the spiced chocolate cookie that Ruchika M wrote about that caught my attention, I bought two! One to eat there and the other for later. Definitely a good choice. In addition to roasting their own coffee, they make their own chocolate. A fan of dark chocolate, a change from my younger years when only milk chocolate would do, I picked up the Port Wine, Mayan and Mexican dark chocolate bars. Love their simple packaging and interesting flavorings. I've yet to open any of them but I know they will be good based on the small piece of chocolate they served along with my coffee. I loved the whole vibe of this spot! A friend back home recommended I stop here when I was in town so they were the first stop on my coffee shop stops. The cashier was helpful and super friendly. Accidentally found this place while on a search for coffee and WOW! Obviously, it's a place they make chocolate. But also, they make all of their coffee syrups in house. If you're a latte nerd like me you'll know that means the lattes are extra smooth and tasty (that Monin stuff all other places have just doesn't cut it). Then the pastries - we got a savory rosemary cheddar scone and a baked bun with lemon curd. So fresh, unique and amazing. And the service!! A very kind lady working the register and making coffees. Coming here was on a whim to find a place that has both matcha latte and got chocolate. This was a place that popped up that was open. After ordering our respective drinks, we realized their menu isn't as extensive as people made it seem. The drinks were a little pricier than I expected, but it wasn't too bad After trying the hot chocolate, I thought it was just okay. The cold night definitely amped the drink up, but honestly, I thought the drink was just okay. Nothing special, nothing to make it stand out above others I've tried. Same with the matcha latte. I am very surprised how absolutely delicious the salmon salad was. I ordered it on a whim cause I was starving, and I was blown away. For 10.5, it came with quite a bit of salmon. I thought it was going to be a cooked salmon, but it was a tasty sashimi smoked salmon. The vinaigrette was lemon based it tied the whole salad together. The avocado has nice crunchy spices on top. This company is unique due to the fact that two companies, Trailhead Coffee Roasters, and Ranger Chocolate Company teamed up to created this coffee shop with a chocolate tasting room. I believe a year ago they did make their sourdough in-house but it since has changed. Regardless, they do make their own housemade nut-based milk, syrups, chai, and pasties though! They literally have the best avocado toast I've ever had. I order their Avocado & Lemon Ricotta Toast. If you're vegan, ask for it vegan-style since it's not vegan by default. It comes with their housemade vegan ricotta. To accompany this scrumptious delicacy, I ordered the Caldera Cortado, a concoction made of caldera spice, espresso, and steamed hemp milk. This place is definitely worth the hype! Honestly one of the best avocado toasts I've ever had. I got the Avo toast with Lemon zest. Its one huge slice on ricotta with cream cheese and perfectly ripe avocados. The lemon zest and olive oil was mouth watering. I devoured this toast it was just so good. Trailhead Coffee Roasters has become my favorite coffee in Portland. They have an edge on all the competition with their dark roast that features notes of campfire marshmallow. So delicious. The interior of this place is cool. Walk your bike through the door, hang it up on the rack, walk to the counter and order a drink, sit down at a table and crank out hours of work.
