Oh don't skip this shop. I know it's on a street of great bougie shops but this one is charm upon charm: it's like walking into a grown-up candy store and finding wrapped bonbons that you want to try -- chocolates that are milk and dark -- all kinds of extraordinary flavors wrapped like truffles. Cherry cordials, pear cordials, apple cordials in chocolates. Caramel chocolates, chocolate caramels. Thing is it's hard for not to love the store because it has three of my favorite things: 1. chocolate: shelves and shelves of unique artisan chocolates made with skill and care from all over the world. 2. And salt -- am a VERY big fan of picking up local salts whenever one is traveling -- including actual blocks and blocks of Himalayan salt stacked. Not imitation but the real stuff. They even have fresh popcorn for you to taste the truffle salt with. 3. Lastly they have fresh cut flowers. It's like a florist and you can create your own bouquets. Beautiful specimens with structure and freshness. I have to say they also have bottles and bottles of bitters -- crafted bitters. King Floyd chief among them. The staff person was super helpful. This was quite a unique shop. A whole bunch of different types of chocolates, both local and foreign. Salts, bitters, and a few other gifty type things. The woman behind the counter was quite friendly. There was even popcorn to try with truffle salt on it. While there was nothing here that I ended up buying, it's a neat place to look around, especially if you're in the market for a salt lamp or some unique bitters as I think they had at least 50 if not a hundred different kinds. read more

The Meadow is a small space, but packed with artisan salt - who knew there were so many varieties - bitters, a massive array of decadent chocolates from around the globe, and gorgeous flowers that greet you when you enter, and you can select stems to make your own bouquet. Smaller selection of pantry items, small bags of pasta with their name, and hot sauces. Also a few books books, focusing on salts, bitters and cocktails, of course! I've purchased some of the Maldonado finishing salt, and it absolutely makes a difference. Never use these salts as an ingredient, it's used to sprinkle on meats, veggies, potatoes, right before serving. Awesome on chocolate cookies. They even sell small containers for salt, known as salt cellars, so you can keep your favorite salt in your purse in case your restaurant meal is lacking that little something extra. They refill for life, for the tiny ones only. I enjoy checking out this store when I'm in the area or when looking for a gift for one of my foodie friends. I'd buy more, but the prices are very high, especially the pasta and chocolate. I can't rationalize $12-15 for a chocolate bar that I'll eat in one sitting. This is one shop on NW 23rd St in Portland, OR with a creative flair like no other I've seen. The Meadow is like a treasure chest of sorts. Every corner of this tiny shop has chocolate bars from specific cacao-producing countries. But it's their salt that reminded me of my Mallorca trip in August '24 that makes Meadow more unique- on top of the bitters they sell for cocktails and flowers. The moment my daughter and I came here, we kinda looked at each other. How can you not smile and feel cozy and warm inside when you see their chocolates, their salts, the design- considering this shop's tiny size? For salt lovers, Meadow sources craft salts from Japan, Mexico, India, Iceland and other countries. As for chocolate, this isn't the place where you'll find truffles- but you can select from the many chocolate bars that could be ideal for making hot chocolate or maybe for making ganache. Meadow goes for that dried floral, whimsical style. Yet some of the fresh blooms I noticed in water, seemed to me like they were on the cusp of wilting. Not only is this cute confectioner collating and curating a considerable collection of chocolates cultivated from all corners of the globe, they're also seemingly informed and knowledgeable about each item stocking their shelves. Even from the brief interactions we had with the counter clerk (whom I suspect was also the owner), every question we asked was answered, accompanied by suggestions, the layout and organization of the store was explained to us, samples were offered (and enjoyed), and we ended up walking out with a variety of delectable things each tailored to the particular tastes of each member of our party! Additionally, you'll find an almost overwhelming selection of salts and spices, bitters and books, candies and candles, among other goodies tucked away in every corner. They have like a thousand different chocolates, ok that's maybe an exaggeration, but they probably realistically have over a hundred different kinds of chocolate to choose from. They are sourced globally and all looked quite enticing, some even have pretty wild flavors like spicy Sichuan flavor. We got some of my favorite Mexican stone ground chocolate and some local filbert (hazelnut's Oregon name) chocolate. They also have good selection of exotic salt and vinegar and other cool stuff. I decided to try a couple new bars and grabbed a couple Venchi Baciodidama chocolates. They're these chocolates with a gluten free hazelnut wafer in the center and they're addictingly good. My partner picked up a few different bitters to try, and a friend with us grabbed a couple chocolate bars too. I had visited before a few years ago, so I was pleased to be able to visit today! The clerk was amazing especially as it was pretty busy plus she was busy trying to clean up after a customer who had accidentally dropped an item. They have a great selection of chocolates plus lots of other condiments, but my reason for coming was the salt! I have a couple that I bought last time, and so I thought I'd try another along with a few chocolates. I chose a Halen Môn Gold Salt from Wales which has a light smoke flavor that will be perfect with the baguette I bought from one of the bakery's in the area. Whether you love milk, dark, white or vegan, there is something here for you if you appreciate high quality chocolate. I initially didn't pay attention to their salt selection until I tried a sample of their Parmesan truffle salt on popcorn. Wow! Despite the hefty price ($18 for under an ounce), it was good enough to want to bring home for my popcorn habit. Forget ordering online! Place is a sh*tshow. I saw an amazing promo for this place on television and bought 3 sets. There was nothing on the website during checkout process about the order taking 4 days to actually be packed and shipped so I was duped with the way they misleadingly present "priority shipping." For 4 days straight I had to call and email about the purchase since I never received confirmation from them. Finally after a week, the clown that pretends she's running the show (Kaitlyn) messaged me saying she "did not know where" my purchase was "or why it hasn't been fulfilled yet." That's it. No apology. No other detail. I get they may be stoned in Portland, but ffs, where is the customer service of this place? I can't imagine that thousands are showing up pushing online orders back almost a week? And after 4 voicemails and several social media tags and dms, I got the most unhelpful response from the most unhelpful employee on staff. When I finally did connect with the meadow clown she didn't bother to provide customer service which put me off even further. So ass, nonchalant response time isn't going to work after supporting the company $200+. Whats AMAZING is that it took them a week to acknowledge me, but only seconds to cancel the order after I told the meadow clown it isn't worth it and I could just as easily find something better at a better establishment that has better treatment for paying customers. This shop is a MUST for tasty treats! I was a bit overwhelmed by all of the options but the nicest associate name Charlotte helped answer all of our questions and gave us the BEST recommendations. The Chocolat Cafe-Tasse 's Blanc & Cafe is white chocolate and coffee bliss... and then for dark chocolate lovers, there is a Askinosie rasberry & milk chocolate bar that melts in your mouth good! Also, all of the individual chocolates at the register? Get them. They were so fun to try and every single one of them were delectable. And I didn't even get to all of the beautiful salt rocks throughout the store... You know when you go to a business, and it's just yours? Like, if someone was designing a gift shop with me very specifically in mind, they could do only little to improve on The Meadow. First, it is located on a particularly dreamy and perfect-for-strolling street. Pretty even from the outside, with a big window and old-fashioned gold lettering adorning the glass. The interior is small, but an appropriate size for what's on offer, and even features wooden shelving and a rolling ladder à la Beauty and The Beast (I know this was real thing before that, but it brings to mind the beloved cartoon, and that makes me very happy). Now, gift shops can veer toward cheesy, but a majority of The Meadow's offerings consist of two of my favorite things: chocolate and salt. How can you go wrong? The bulk of the salt is in the form of pink Himalayan blocks, serving dishes, and their ilk (even a mortar and pestle!!!!). I feel like these blocks have sort of seen their heyday at this point, but if The Meadow can still sell 'em then good on them. I already have a block, otherwise would have purchased one as I still think they are dang cool, and priced reasonably here. They also had a whole span of artisanal sea and flavored salts. Chocolate was mostly craft, with some candy bars and other treats snuck in. Additional offerings included MANY bitters, small gifts, cookbooks, etc. Prices are in line with anywhere else selling these products, and worth it for a superior find. Even if you don't buy anything, it is worth stopping by simply to revel in The Meadow's magnificence. read more

This is a well stocked chocolate and salt (yes, salt) store in a pricey neighborhood. The quirky library bookcases decor fits in with the neighborhood and is fun and visually appealing. The curated selection of craft chocolate bars is great. They carry local Portland makers, as well as others from makers around the world. This is good chocolate, but it's also the kind of chocolate where every bar is not for everybody. Craft chocolate brings out the unique tastes of each cocoa bean origin, and this is a good place to experience that and decide which origins (countries and plantations) you like. You may also find the same cocoa beans processed by different craft makers taste different, so this is a great place to learn which makers you prefer. The salt and salt blocks are an interesting companion to sell in the same location as chocolate. A little odd, but hey, if it works for them then good for them. I have family members who love chocolate, but are very particular. I gave the employee a description of what my grandmother enjoys and she was able to suggest the right bar! We had so much fun Peru zing this particular store. One wall is filled to the brim with chocolates. Like a library of chocolates. Another wall was filled with Himalayan salt and other savory cooking items. The thing we had never heard of was these giant blocks of Himalayan salt, which they had stacked up near the front door and in the windows. Some other people in the shop at the time raved about cooking on these blocks of salt. A small block of salt you could put a stick of non-salted butter on and it would salts the butter supposedly. They had samples of black truffle salt on popcorn at the register. So we had to get one of those. And a few fun little cookbooks Relating to cooking with these salt blocks. The product was Cardamon Bitter , they sold it to me at The Meadows for 30 dollars and the same product at New Port Beach was 18.99. They went above and beyond to walk us through the countless unique chocolate options, and helped us find the perfect gifts. They took extra care to package each item securely (the really cute bags were an added bonus). After several long flights I can confirm the chocolates are still perfectly intact. I'm a spice guy and yes Penzeys has become one of my favorite places. I have heard aboutThe Meadows and knew about the types of salt that they have. I know about the chocolate as well. I did not know about the small samplings of hot sauce. Definite bonus there. It was nice to be able to sample the salts. That was a cool experience. My friend and his four year old daughter were trying them as well. She seemed to get a kick out of it. I will say the the Fleur De Hell, as the called it was not hot like I thought it would be. Salt infused with ghost pepper. The smokey salts did taste and smell of it, and the flake salts were really good on the tongue. The three hot sauces were right up my alley. None were extremely spicy but they had good flavor. One was a bit on the sweet side but you still got the vinegar in it. We did not get to try any of the chocolate but my did they have an array of it. The chocolate covered the whole side wall of the store. Local, small batch chocolate. Just incredible, but the bars did range from $3-$10 or more, I think. It's a cool place to try at least once. Enjoy. read more
