Such delicious food and one of our favorite lunch spots. With both Rangoon and Burma Ruby so close together, we never have a problem getting seated for lunch at one of their locations. There are so many different dishes on the menu and I love trying something new each time I'm there. Any of their spicy dishes with brown rice are delicious. Great spot to bring clients for a nice lunch that isn't overpriced, especially in Palo Alto. Love having the salads made to order at the table - all of them being unique and delicious. Why does this restaurant just ignore the "no spice" request notes in the orders? Several times I ordered Mango Swai online (through DoorDash or Orderahead) and added a note "No spice, please", the note is always ignored and the food comes spice. Please consider what the customer is requesting in the order's note. read more

Had dinner with my friend here and loved the food I ordered. They confused my order at first but fixed it quickly. Loved the service, they didn't have a full cup of beer that I wanted so they gave me what they had for free as well as a cup of a different beer. read more

The other Yelpers are spot on regarding the cramp seating arrangements here. Here is example of how tight the seating is. My husband and I came here for dinner on Sunday night and sat at a table for two near the wall. I sat on the long cushion booth seating near the wall and my husband sat across the table from me on a chair. We were given very large menus, which we open to see what we want to order. The table on my left could seat up to four was not taken up yet. A family of four adults came in and sat down. The son a thin lanky man scrambled to the long cushion booth seating next to the wall. As he maneuvered pass me and my open menu, the menu touched his buttocks and snagged his pants. Man seating is too close. On my right a family of three left and a couple and their friend, a woman, sat down. The maître D had to pull the table out for the rather large or rotund woman to sit at the table next to me. She and her large purse encroach into my area and table. She had to shove her purse up next to her since it was touching my leg. I could hear her husband asking the maître D as he watched his wife crawl into the seat, "Isn't this a table for two not a table for four?" The answer was no this is a table for four. When I left I had to leave on my left side and of course I grazed the mother of the son who my menu saw her son's buttocks. Okay onward to the food and the service. The service was great. Our waiter was Chris. He was awesome. Very attentive and was a wealth of information for our food. When ordering he asked how spicy or hot do we want our food. Since I'm not fond of hot food but my husband loves his food spicy, Chris suggested that we do a semi medium hot sauce with a side of hot sauce for my husband. He was spot on. The food for me was somewhat hot but not to the point where I had to down glasses of water. He also recommended a vegetarian tofu dish that was very tasty. The food also came out very fast. Chris also replenished our waters often. For appetizer we had the samosas, which there was four on a plate. The samosas had a warm soft filling and a crispy outside. The sauce that came with it also enhanced the samosas. It was a good appetizer choice. We ordered the tea leaf salad. It was pretty salty. I love San Francisco Clement Street, Burmese Super Star's tea leaf salad and was hoping that this one was just like it. Unfortunately, the saltiness of the salad ruined it for me. We also ordered the Rangoon lemongrass pork, fiery tofu and vegetables, and brown rice. The Rangoon lemongrass pork was very good. I loved the fresh basil with the lemongrass in the pork. The sauce was delicious mixed with the brown rice we had. As for the fiery tofu and vegetables, it was also good and was not too spicy. We also enjoyed this dish too. Overall food and service is very good but be prepared for extremely tight seating arrangements. read more

Rangoon Ruby is one of my favorite options for company lunches and events. Many restaurants that offer a variety and catering services tend to fall short in either service, flavor and or presentation..... not Rangoon Ruby they ROCK it EVERY time!!! We usually don't like to have our dinners at the bar. But the bar tender John made us feel welcome and the manager of the restauant brought the dishes to the counter himself with a friendly smile. The Tea Leaf Salad, Country Style Lamb were good but the Salmon Lemon Grass Fusion carried too much American fusion. We liked the Garlic Noodles and Burmese-Indian Rice. They were both very good. The servers well deserved a 27% tips. We will make reservation next time. read more

Food good. Bad, bad, experience sitting there. Better for take out I would say. If you are thinking of this place where you are going to have a nice dinner and conversation, forget it. The owner has crammed up every available space with chairs and tables. It almost felt like the waiters were passing food over our head and shoulders. The atmosphere is terrible! However, several days after having a lunch with friends there, I found my credit card was charged more than I signed for. I then checked yelp reviews and found that was not the first time it happened. Being always curious about new Restaurant, my friends and I decided to try this new Burmese Restaurant in Downtown Palo Alto, "Rangoon Ruby" we were NOT disappointed !!! Food was all delicious and the service was great, stuff were friendly and very attentive. The restaurant is beautiful, clean, cozy, warm with a modern feel to it. So now onto the most important part, the food ! Started off with the tea leaf salad - you can't go wrong with this. I can eat this stuff everyday if I could. Consist of assorted seeds and nuts with chopped tomato and lettuce. Samosas and Palata were perfect !!! layered bread with coconut curry sauce with chicken served on the side. Shrimp Lettuce Wrap, Coconut noodle soup, very flavorful. I wish I had a bigger stomach to try all the dishes, but this will suffice, until next time "Rangoon Ruby" We will definitely be returning to try out some of their other options and will bring more friends so we can taste more of the menu read more

Such a nice find for us when we visited South Bay. Love the friendly and helpful service and their recommendations. The tea leaf salad has a lot of flavors and comes with their imported Burmese sauce. The Nan Gyi Dok, the rice noodle with coconut chicken sauce, is tasty, and the Chicken Kebat paired well with the jasmine rice. All dishes we tried are flavorful with fresh ingredients. There is a 3 hour free parking lot nearby. We will be back! read more

Been here twice for dinner now. I am definitely a fan! The green tea leaf salad is a must. The palata appetizer is fabulous. Pad thai - get it spicy is delish! Country lamb - so flavorful! The TEA LEAF SALAD is really excellent!!!! Definitely on-par with the salad from Burma Superstar and Mingalaba. The paratha/platha and beef curry were just ok. The platha didn't look very fresh, and the beef in the curry was a bit stringy for my liking. I LOVED the open, airy feel of the restaurant. The ceilings are really high, and they have huge windows that open onto the street. The decor is minimalistic but tasteful. The service was attentive but a bit awkward because of the iphone ordering system. The owners were VERY warm though. They greeted us as we came in and thanked us as we left. IMHO, the prices were a bit high given the portion size and quality of food. I will definitely be back for the tea leaf salad though. read more

Make a reservation if you're coming on a weekend! It seems like there can be quite a wait if you don't have one. My favorite dish that we ordered was the garlic eggplant. Aside from the fact that we had garlic breath for about an hour after we ate there, it was great. We have gone to rangoon ruby multiple times (in different locations - palo alto, san carlos and belmont), and it was always mediocre service and decent quality food that was overpriced. This experience was the deal breaker - worst ever! We go in there with a dinner reservation for 7:15. Walking around palo alto, we got hungry earlier, so decided to eat right away at 6pm. We walk into a restaurant at 6 (thats half empty) and asked a table for 2. The response I got was - "Yes, I can get you seated right away, but we need it back by 7:15". I was like wth?! Who even says that? You either have a table or say blocked by online reservations. How could you say I want a table back by this time? Never heard it in any restaurant before! I was soo pissed off, but my husband made a joke out of the comment, bcos they wanted the table back for the reservation I had made at 7:15 in opentable. So ended up being funny and we got seated! After we were seated, the waiter there was in a hurry to get us out of the place - 1. While we just got started on our appetizers, we were asked if we wanted our main course served as well. In a normal setting it would have been ok - but the table was soo small, where would the main course plating go - on our heads? 2. While we were half way through, the same waiter comes again and asks if he could change our plates to give us the main course plates - like cant you see that we are still eating? 3. We got the stink eye multiple times all the way through our appetizer.. As if this bad treatment was not bad enough, the same 'service' followed through our main course as well - 1. We were asked multiple times if they could pack the remaining food 2. Almost peering over the table to see if we are done We finally left after we finished our meals swearing we will never come back here! The hostess and the folks waiting there need to learn how to run a restaurant - worst experience ever! Great place in PA but you do really need a reservation or be prepared to wait a long time . This is a small place and tables are very close together so not a place for intense conversations ! Another one of my Palo Alto favorites where I can order anything and I know it will be good. The seating area is small so it's a bit of a challenge to get a place to sit unless you reserve ahead of time. I've tried their minted jalapeño chicken, chicken kebat, and chili lamb. However, people swear by their tea leaf salad and I like it too but I am not a huge fan. That being said, I am definitely hooked and will keep coming back as long as I am in the bay. Most importantly, our server was Eric and he's about the best server! Takes such good care of you and keeping you fully satisfied with your experience is his ultimate goal. read more

This place was great. We had lunch there, and I grabbed some reservations through OpenTable for 15 minutes from that moment, which was a good idea, the place was pretty packed for lunch. Our table shared a tea leaf salad. I'd had one before, and the salad was great. We got water, which was cucumber flavored. I'd have preferred plain ice water, but didn't ask differently. For the entree, I ordered crispy chicken, which is friend chicken balls with sticky sauce. It was supposed to have a spice to it, but definitely no spice. I didn't realize it was so sweet, otherwise I probably wouldn't have ordered the dish. Don't get me wrong, I liked my dish a lot, but would have gone for something less sweet next time. They've got an extensive wine list, and the decor of the place definitely is catered to a more upscale clientele, so if you are looking to spend some money, this could be an excellent place. I would definitely go back as the food was great and there were lots of other options to try. read more

I love this restaurant. Let me start by saying that I am from Italy, where quality of food in restaurants is usually pretty high. Unfortunately in my country ethnic cusine is not so special and not as diffuse as here. I love good food and I am always willing to experiment new tastes, therefore I said immediately yes to my partner when she proposed this Burmese restaurant (even though I had no idea on what to expect from it). Food was delicious, delicate flavours but very distinctive. I would suggest the Tea leaf salad (amazing) and the Rangoon Lemongrass - either with pork or chicken, I ate both since I went there two times in a month - accompanied with coconut rice. Service was also really good. The waiters were very polite and attentive, checking on us, but not bothering at all. Price is reasonable. I would definitely suggest it! read more

Easily the best Asian fusion restaurant in the Bay Area - food-wise, ambience-wise and service-wise! My husband and I went to Rangoon Ruby last night and we had a fantastic time. We had a reservation at 8:30pm but we were running late and could make it to the restaurant only at 9pm. We honestly didn't expect to be seated at our table without a wait-time. To our pleasant surprise, the lady at the reception greeted us with a smile and said, "So good to see you, we'll have your table ready right away!". After we were seated, the service was very impressive. We are vegetarian and we had lots of options. The waiter was very attentive and professional. We started off with some wine and had samosas as appetizer, easily the best samosa in the bay area. Yes, being Indian and having samosas all my life, the samosa at Rangoon Ruby is truly exceptional. For the main course we had the garlic noodles, which was great and some home-style fried rice and the veggie kebat. Everything was perfect. We ordered the home-style fried rice coz the description said that they steam yellow beans for 2 days!!! We were curious as to what that was and lo! it was magical. I've eaten here, and at their sister restaurant Burma Ruby (which appears to have exactly the same menu) many times. I have several dishes that are my go to favorites which are all quite excellent. I've tried a few other dishes and found them to be not as good (less flavorful, or overly sweet), so I tend to stick to my favorites. If you ask them to they will make your food extra spicy and they have an excellent hot sauce you can request. The restaurant does tend to be crowded and loud, and can get pretty hot in the summer. It is also a little bit pricey, but about what you would expect for downtown Palo Alto. Their service is excellent. The waiters are always attentive and very friendly. The hostess says "our chef came from Burma Superstar". After trying out this restaurant, I'm thinking "yeah, but did he get fired from Burma Superstar?" They try to copy most of Burma's dishes, even giving their dishes similar names. But the cooking is far below Burma's. The chicken and lentil curry had tough chicken that was probably rapid boiled for 15 minutes, and the curry was watery and loaded with salt or MSG to try to flavor it. The pork and pumpkin stew had equally watery and lack-of-flavor liquid. Most of the dishes are $12 to $16. Not worth it. read more
