Sweet Maple is just around the corner from me! They seem to specialize on giving an Asian-inspired twist on classic American breakfast food and are ALWAYS packed. I came here for brunch with some friends. They do an annoying thing where they won't take reservations (first come, first served) and won't seat your party until EVERYONE is present. I felt bad for being a few minutes late and my friends had to sit outside because the restaurant would not seat them! I get they want to maximize profits, but if 2/3rds of the party is there, I don't get the point of not seating them. It's just not good customer service, in my opinion. In terms of the food, it is VERY rich. Delicious, but rich. The kind of rich where you won't be hungry for a solid 5-8 hours afterwards! For my drink, I got the Ube Latte--very comforting! It's bright purple but tastes like sweet milk! For my main dish, I upgraded it "For a complete meal" where I got the Marinier (French toast) and the Millionaire's Bacon. All very decadent and rich! Came here on a Saturday around 9:30 and it was already busy! We were seated right away as a party of two with a high chair, but the restaurant filled up quickly after we arrived. The service was great from start to finish. Everyone was friendly and attentive throughout our visit. The food did take a little while to come out though. We ordered the chicken wings, chicken croffle, and blueberry moffle. The chicken croffle was easily the star of the meal! The croffle was crispy, buttery, and full of flavor, while the chicken was nice and juicy. The chicken wings were also delicious, and we really liked the rice cakes that came with them. Came on a Thursday and this place was busy, but not too much to the point where we couldn't get a hold of our server. We ordered a couple of things to share, that being the Millionaire's Bacon in the Original flavor and the Big Hip, which was a deep fried French toast with Vermont maple syrup. Both yummy, the bacon had a lil sweet and spicy moment going on which I liked, and the French toast was delightfully crispy and was not greasy at all. Main courses he got the One Percenter burger and I got the Tornado Galbi Omurice. He killed the burger, so it must have been good, only "complaint" was that there was quite a bit of arugula (I disagree, probably because I got to have the extra). For my omurice, I was expecting the egg to be prepared the traditional way where its kinda shaped like a football and you slice into it and its nice and runny, but this was not that. I assume the "tornado" part of the name comes from the egg being more of a twisted delicate egg as opposed to the traditional style of preparation. Don't get me wrong, it was still delicious, but just don't expect it to be the ones that you see on Instagram. The boneless galbi that it came with had great flavor, but was just a bit on the chewy side, but nothing crazy. For drinks, we got the Tiffany Mimosa and the Champagne Garden. The Tiffany Mimosa was blue curacao and champagne with a sugar rim, which we both agreed was super sweet. The Champagne Garden had watermelon, white rum, champagne. So good, so refreshing, A perfect summer drink. In terms of ambiance, its about as brunchy as a brunch place can get, and its not too loud. My partner and I went to Sweet Maple on the recommendation of my foodie friend's ex. While I never met the man, he has incredible taste, because Sweet Maple has the best breakfast food I've ever had in the bay area. Well worth the trip. The two of us were dubious about the Millionaire's Bacon, because it was hyped up to the point where it seemed unlikely that it could live up to the reputation. We were wrong. We ordered the Millionaire's Bacon sampler platter, which is four strips of long, thick pieces of bacon, baked with brown sugar and spices. There is the original, which is brown sugar, cayenne, red, and black pepper, which was sweet, salty, and the perfect amount of spicy. The other slices were orange, cinnamon, and rosemary. My partner enjoyed the orange best, whereas I loved the cinnamon, but we both thought the rosemary was underwhelming. The bacon itself was very thick and meaty with a minimal amount of fat, and was just clearly high quality pork. Truly worth the hype. We also got the bottomless mimosas, which not only had multiple choices of juice (we got raspberry lemonade) but were surprisingly heavy on the champagne. The waiter kept them coming without us needing to ask, to the point where I had to tell him I was done because I was a little too tipsy for breakfast. My partner got the chicken croffle, and was very impressed. I tried the fried chicken (though not the croffle) and it was very well spiced, very crunchy, and well cooked--juicy and tender. I got the big hip, which is deep fried "french toast". I wouldn't call it french toast myself, but it was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and came with fresh fruit, butter, and syrup. There wasn't enough syrup for the entire dish, but I asked our waiter for more and he came back with it in less than a minute. On top of the food being as close to perfect as you can get, the service was great. Several different waiters checked in on us throughout the meal, making sure we were enjoying the food and that we didn't need anything else. The vibes of the restaurant are really enjoyable too. The décor is lovely, the sound levels are very reasonable, and everything was spotless during our visit. The restaurant does not accept reservations and does not have a Yelp Waitlist or anything of the like. Since the pot was sizzling, the food was extremely hot so I was unable to eat it right away. Once it cooled down a bit, I started eating it, however I could not enjoy it as much since the food was still burning my mouth. Since I spent a long time parking and waiting, I was hungry and continued eating. I guess I couldn't fully enjoy the flavors combined in the pot because the food was so hot. We added ourselves to the Yelp waitlist from outside and were called up within minutes, even on a busy Saturday late morning. Great start! The host received us warmly, but things slipped from there. Our table was missing cutlery and we had to flag our server down to get it sorted. We asked for a minute to look over the menu since it was our first visit. He did not come back for five minutes, and only because we flagged him down again. When we ordered, he took our request without making eye contact, attention clearly elsewhere in the restaurant. One dish came out. The second did not. Our server never circled back to check on us, and seemingly did not notice that one of us had no food in front of her. After nearly ten minutes, we flagged him down again. He called over from across the restaurant, not walking to us, with a "what?" We had to gesture that my guest still had no food. He came over briefly, confirmed our order, said it was coming soon, and left. No apology. No acknowledgment of the wait. No offer to make it right while one plate sat getting cold. The food eventually came, again with no apology. It was good. But by then, honestly, the experience had overshadowed it. We asked for a manager. Cathy came over, listened, and immediately apologized. She agreed the service fell short, gave us a break on the bill, and handled the situation with real grace. She is the reason this review has any stars at all!
