I stopped in for some Russian staples like Pelmeni and beer- the selection was nice and the owner was knowledgeable and kind. The Pelmeni selection was great and they had Baltika 3 which is rare now a days. Clean, tons of parking, fast service! read more

I have been to Rashad Gourmet on 2 occasions, on both I have been very impressed with this relatively small, but well stocked grocery store that specializes in foods from East Europe and Russia. The owner is from Azerbaijan and he knows his products very well. The prices are not inexpensive and one reviewer complained of the high prices. But if you want excellent foods from eastern Europe, you will find a wonderful variety. There are dill pickles (from Ukraine), smoked sardines (from Latvia-the best sardines that I've ever eaten), roasted pepper spread from Macedonia, spicy eggplant bruschetta, among many other choices. There are also a lot of dessert items from Russia and Ukraine. The food is so interesting that it's a journey just to look at and admire what is for sale. Rashad now imports sustainably harvested black caviar from the Black Sea. The caviar is expensive and we didn't buy any, but it is the real deal. There is also a selection of fresh meat. The store is small and you can't feed a family of four with what's sold here. But as a specialty market, Rashad Gourmet is definitely a place to check out. read more

The store is well stocked and the owner is incredibly kind and thoughtful! They were out of Viola Cheese (Finlandia now) and I inquired on if they'd ever have it in stock, to which the owner confirmed he's just ordered more and they were coming in 2 days later. He wanted to know if there was anything else I was hoping to find before he made more orders, which I found very considerate. I don't speak Russian, but my wife does and lived for a while in the Ukraine, so when I discovered this store near my new place of work I decided to check it out and maybe pick up a few things to surprise her. Also, we both watch Life of Boris on YouTube, so at least I figured I could try some kvass, smetana, or other things Boris talks about. It's a small shop with a few rows of shelves, a small refrigerated section, and a deli counter. I saw products from Russia and several Eastern European countries. As noted above, I'm not qualified to judge their selection, but there was a good variety of products given the small space. I mostly like sampling snacks or drinks I haven't tried before, so I picked up a pack of tea cookies, a couple of sodas (including a bright green one that Boris had referred to as "Chernobyl Water"), and a Ukrainian honey beer. I enjoyed all of them. Others have noted a lack of customer service; personally, I like to be left alone until I ask for help or have a question, so I enjoyed being able to peruse at my own pace, undisturbed. When I picked up a loaf of packaged black bread from one of the shelves, the man behind the counter did come over, asked if I spoke Russian (which I appreciated instead of just assuming I would), then noted that they make their own bread as well. I picked up one of their loaves, which I really liked (had a nice touch of coriander in it) and which my wife said was authentic. All in all a good experience and I'll be stopping back, hopefully bringing my wife along to decipher the kvass selection for me. read more

There's very little English in this place. Almost everything (some exclusively) had Russian on it and everyone there was speaking Russian. Wait, what do I know about Russian? Nothing. So maybe it was another language, but that's besides the point. This place felt authentic. I wish I knew more about what to get, but the red caviar (salmon roe) and tomato juice (did you know Russian tomato juice was SO good?) that I got were both good. Next time I'll need to be more brave and get some of the dried fish or fish in oil. You need to be careful though, some bags of fish in oil were leaking... read more

Yes, all the Russian Gourmets in the area are overpriced. But unfortunately, you cannot find the food and goods in other places and its either pay the high prices or no chance of getting what you want. At the same time, I know two different Russian Gourmets in the area - and I very much dislike this one. I know in Russia that service tends to be rude and that is part of the charm, but the women here are rude to the point of cruel. Even in Russia I have never been mocked or belittled so much for my purchases as I have here. Sure, I bought a book basically called "how to get rich quick" and a Vladimir Asimov CD along with my bread. Still, they didn't have to laugh hysterically at me and call me names for it though. Also, beware of expired or stale food - you really have to check dates carefully here and inspect the food. Last time I bought black bread here it was as hard as a rock - I mistook it in the store as just being slightly harder, delicious black bread but when I opened it, it was more like a brick. Not fresh. I highly prefer the Russian Gourmet in Alexandria, and want to go to the one in Fairfax cuz apparently they have Moldovan wine in stock. This place is just too rude and after being there once I did not want to go back. Still, for those who want to go - you won't see it from the road. You have to round the corner of the strip mall where 3 Pigs (now some other bbq place) used to be. Probably why it is so empty cuz no one can see it. So go, park, walk around the corner and it is at the very end. read more

Please don't come in here looking for customer service. It's more like self service and self shopping. If you know what you're looking for this is awesome. I come in here to buy lot of childhood goodies... And their smoked ham is the best! They usually can cut the ham for you if you request them. :) read more

After my disappointing meal from Three Pigs, I went next door to the Russian Gourmet in hopes of finding my magic brew - Baltica 9. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted (not by the workers) by the sounds of Russian language in the background. Just like that, my gaze was magically called to a rack in the front of the store and there it was - Baltica numbers 3 through 9. The hallelujah music started playing in my head as I grabbed a few bottles and dashed over to the counter - I couldn't believe it and had to cash out before someone decided that they wouldn't actually sell it. I mean, this stuff had me happy for once in the middle of my first combat tour when I stopped through Uzbekistan and each time I take a sip of this stuff, it gives me not only a great buzz, but immediately pops flashbacks of the Uzbek night club and stereotypical Russian house music that was popular at the time. I'll have to go back - they have a deli counter and other goods, but being unable to read Cyrillic or speak Russian, I'm hesitant to go for anything but the beer. Yum... read more

The packaged meet I. Ought looked so bad, I had to throw it out for fear of poisoning. Some refrigerated items do not have expiration dates and even the owner could not determine it. The tin can of condensed milk looked like it was once opened, something weird was inside. Pirogi with cabbage had mostly dough and very little fillingg. I do not trust this store anymore and I will not buy anything from there again. I agree that the Russian store in Gaithersburg is much better. read more

under new management/ownership. in past 2 of the 3 people working there had the personality of a turtle. so the reviews were correct.since new ownership, i witnessed a complete transformation. clean, friendly, and while prices are not "dollar store" prices, and why would one put in trash in their stomachs? so, get away from the bland english cuisine and try this place. best, breads, canned fish (very cheap and from countries who do not farm fish in sewer water). you will not be dissapointed. remember, you only live once, and your stomach is a reflection of you! read more

False advertising does not seem to bother this store. Advertised 30% off all merchandise -- big sign on window -- no qualifiers or conditions listed. First time I bought merchandise after sale began, I was told I could not use credit cards. So I went back several times and paid with cash. Today, I went back and they told me my purchase was too small to qualify. Even with a 30% discount they are high priced on many items. read more
