Small Korean bakery in the heart of Annandale with late night hours. Wide variety of small, sweet breads, rolls, small cakes, cookies, and cakes made to order. The owner takes a lot of pride in his establishment and has community awards posted on the wall that tells his story as you can tell he's been there for quite some time. I've only picked up treats to go, and have not had the time to dine-in. The restroom needs to be updated since it's sort of rundown. After attending the NVA Thai Street Food Festival, my brother and I stumble on this cozy hidden shop. They offer Korean pastries, breads, cakes, teas, beverages and bing soo. They have limited indoor seatings but manageable. We both ordered bing soo which is Korean shaved ice dessert with variety of diced melons, sweet red bean, ice cream and rough chopped corn flakes. They were both delicious and refreshing. If you don't mind the wait, there was one elderly man with one helper in kitchen. There were other patrons before us were still waiting for their order. Their breads and cakes are less expensive than ones in the other Korean bakeries. Sometimes, they are short staffed and seems like they were sharing kitchen with other business. One day, I've rang the bell twice and they saw me waiting at least twice from their kitchen. And kept me waiting for 15 minutes. Felt like my urgency was none of their business. This bakery has the best red bean paste pastry in the whole DMV area. Just pick one up and feel the weight! It is, at a minimum, twice as heavy compared to other red bean paste pastey Korean bakery sells. It also tastes good! Try their signature chestnut bread as well. Highly recommend. read more

Went to this bakery after grabbing food next door. I've always seen this place passing by but never been. I've heard from others that it's been here for a long time and owned by the same man. Upon entering, it was really quiet, nobody else was there. However, the place was very clean and had a cute atmosphere like other bakeries in Annandale. There was one man there and he was in the back working hard on frosting cakes. I liked how they had a variety of options when it came to breads and pastries! I got an almond cake and my mom picked out a matcha roll. While checking out, the man offered us a sample of the "balloon bread" since my mom was curious. It was really sweet of him to give us a piece. He also took the matcha cake and told my mom he'd give her a fresh one from the back! So sweet. The matcha roll and almond cake were both so moist and soft! loved how they weren't overly sweet and could eat more than one bite. Definitely recommend coming here for a study spot or just to try a small owned bakery as opposed to the regular shilla or breeze bakery. Will def be getting my birthday cakes here from now on!! read more

This is my FAVORITE bakery:) I love Napoleon, they have the best cakes I've ever had. The texture is so soft, and the designs are so cute! My family always gets their cakes for Christmas and birthdays. Their chestnut bread is out of this world, super unique compared to the other bakeries and they don't skimp on the ingredients. FOOD So many pastries! I usually go to Shilla for my Korean baking goods, but today decided to check out a different place with a friend. We bought the sweet potato bread, twisted doughnuts, and their pizza pastry, and enjoyed it all thoroughly. I will say that their sweet potato bread is quite filling, so sharing might be preferable. The pizza is a little sweet, as is customary for Korean goods, so be aware as you order. Their doughnuts are classically good, and no complaints here. DRINKS The bakery offers its own range of coffees, teas, and smoothies, and also commercial drinks like Starbucks Frappuccino drinks (which are smaller than usual) and so forth. SERVICE The staff was working on some pastries in the back when we arrived but rang us up quickly when we came up to the register to order. AMBIANCE The store itself is quite cozy. Tables are set close together, but there were few patrons in the store at a given time. It could get quite loud later in the day, so it might not be an ideal place to study. That being said, when it was quiet, it was quite nice to, again, study or catch up with friends. PARKING A small parking lot is available in front of the store and is shared by neighboring vendors. When we arrived, there were no parking spots available, but we were able to snag one just as someone was leaving after our second run around the lot. read more

This is a small little Korean bakery that I've never paid too much attention to until a couple days ago. My parents and I got lunch next door and my mom immediately noticed the bakery after lunch because she wanted pastries for later on. We stopped by and the interior is on the smaller side with a good selection of Korean pastry staples such as Castella cakes (and muffins), soboro bread, red bean buns, etc. We grabbed a few things and headed out. Also noticed that they make cakes here and have a typical cafe drinks selection (coffee, tea, etc.). There's no (or minimal) seating in here, if I recall correctly. Overall, the Castella cakes are just like any other and you can't go wrong with getting them at Napoleon Bakery. I didn't really like the black sesame bread with red bean paste very much, though. We also enjoyed their loaf of bread for breakfast. I'd stop by again if I'm in the plaza again and I want some pastries! read more

This bakery was in the news on April 12, 2015. The driver of a Lexus car crashed all the way into the bakery, and 6 people were injured, including the driver. The injuries were not life-threatening. Why is this worth mentioning? The store passed structural inspection, so the ceiling won't fall on your head. This is a Korean bakery with a french name. The owner said he's been there for 20 years. He's done a great job of being unnoticed. There's only 64 Yelp reviews since 2006. My wife and I visited on a Monday at 4:30 pm. It wasn't busy. We tried 7 items. 1) Red Bean Bread A baked bun with lots of red bean paste filling. The filling was smooth and slightly sweet with a moderate red bean flavor. The bun was soft and breadlike with a toasted flavor on the outside and plain on the inside. It was a vendor product. It was good overall. 2) Twist Donuts They came in a bag of 2. They were covered with sugar glaze and granulated sugar. The exterior was slightly crunchy and very sweet. The inside was mildly sweet and slightly chewy like a dense Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Doughnut. This was decent tasting and notable. It's the first twist doughnut that I've had in a Korean bakery that was not breadlike. 3) Mixed Fruit Bingsoo It had 5 layers. The bottom layer was shaved milk ice with strawberry syrup drizzle. The milk ice was fluffy like snow and had a light, sweet milk flavor. It was perfect! A huge layer of diced fruit sat on top of the milk ice. It had watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew. The fruit had light flavors and sweetness with a little crispness because they were still slightly frozen. A scoop of vanilla ice cream and cornflakes sat on top of the fruit. It was good, but not special. The crunchy texture was a good addition. The next layer up was more of the same fruit. The top layer was a huge mound of shaved milk ice. The serving size was huge! The shaved milk ice was one of the best that we've had. This bingsoo had pleasing flavors at each layer and overall. We loved it! It may not please people who are looking for very sweet bingsoo with lots of syrup, mochi, and sweetened condensed milk. 4) Melon Pound Cake It was soft, moist, and slightly sweet with a hint of honeydew flavor. The interior had a bright light green color. That's food color. It had no butter flavor. This was not a pound cake. It was a well-made melon sponge cake with mild flavors. 5) Banana Cake Two banana shaped vanilla cakes with chopped walnuts. There was no banana flavor, and it was slightly dry and dense. There was a light vanilla flavor with moderate sweetness. Cute but it needs banana flavor and more moisture. This cake was in no man's land. I didn't like it, and I didn't hate it. Edible and forgettable. 6) Croquette It was deep-fried breaded mashed potatoes with some onions, carrots, and green peppers. The breading was slightly sweet, with a light crunch on the exterior while soft and moist inside. The filling had a slight saltiness. I heated it in an air fryer. The texture was great, and the combination of flavors was enjoyable. 7) Steamed Rice Cake It was light, fluffy, and moist with a mild sweetness and moderate rice flavor. The texture was like sponge cake. The cooked black beans on top were soft and slightly sweet. This was well-made and a great example of basic rice cake. The service was attentive and polite. We were the only customers, so our bingsoo took only 6 minutes. The dining room was old and relatively clean. The restroom was old, worn looking, and in need of a deep cleaning. They are located in an old strip of stores with a small parking lot. Parking is free. Their prices were on the low side compared to other Korean bakeries in Annandale, so there's value here. There were a few items that were very good. Nothing was bad. They are worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

I am a huge fan of Napoleon Bakery! This small, no-frills Korean bakery offers delicious, in-house baked breads and pastries, as well as custom cakes and bingsoo! I love their Morning Rolls, their Pizza bread (vegetarian friendly!), their Choux Cream bread, and their thumbprint jam cookies. The items are not overly sweet and they are always super fresh! Bingsoos, the shaved ice, seems to be a recent addition, and the quality and the generous amount of this is bar-none! There is attention to detail in terms of layering the toppings (the fruit, the sweet red bean, the condensed milk, the cornflakes, etc.) - SO GOOD! I love that this place is always impeccably clean, and there are plenty of seats for small to larger parties. They're also opened late, too! The staff here are always so sweet, so humble, and so welcoming - they really give this bakery a warm, cozy vibe. Be sure to check this place out - you won't be disappointed! read more

Small and cute little bakery. The store seems a bit dated, but charming. The baked goods were fresh and just packaged when we came on a Saturday around 10 am. We got the choux bun pastry and a croquette. The bun had a nice texture - soft and fluffy, but the choux custard filling wasn't as smooth as I would've liked it to be. It was quite grainy and egg-y. The croquette had a nice bun, too - slightly crispy and chewy. However, the croquette filling was just okay. Service was fine and the ambiance was quite nice. This bakery is a bit short and kind of brutal and keeps invading other bakeries. Oh wait no that's Napoleon Bonaparte. A cheap and delicious bakery which I appreciate and enjoy located in Annandale. They close it a little early sometimes which can be annoying and that is why I took a star off them, but I'll definitely keep coming back for the many great Asian baked goods, and I'm liable to increase the rating if I'm actually able to go inside next time like I did the first couple of times I came here. read more

This is a small mom-and-pop shop and still competes with name brand bakeries nearby. To me, this bakery is a passage to my good old memory back in South Korea. From coffee to their pastries, I feel like I return back to late 80's or 90's in South Korea. That might be why you can see many elder Korean customers come and enjoy this bakery cakes and pastries (and coffee). As you can tell by the bakery's exterior and interior, they are aging together with the owner. If you ask, the owner can tell you his life journey about how he ended up doing bakery business. He is very proud of what he makes / bakes for his customers, and I never doubted that. Even for a small moment with the owner, I learned a few things about life. He mentioned he will retire in a few years. Before that time comes, I will try to visit this bakery as many times as possible. I highly recommend this place unless you are looking for a very trendy Korean bakery that you can easily find many of them in Annandale area. This is the place, you can't easily find in US. Thanks to Michele D for introducing me to the best and most affordable bingsoo I've yet had in Annandale. Don't listen to the employees about the size of the servings. It does not fit in the palm of your hand. $5 here gets you what amounts to a small meal. What would typically cost you easily a good 50% more at some other nearby Korean bakeries, Napoleon offers at a far more attractive price point. And that includes your option of a scoop of ice cream (which, really? frozen dairy on bingsoo? ew...), a mound of semi-sweet red beans, a heap of seasonal fruit like honeydew and watermelon, and a mountain of shaved ice topped off with condensed milk. Word to the wise: if you've just finished gorging yourself into a food coma from the fried deliciousness of Bon Chon, order one of these to share with friends. Napoleon offers a similar repertoire of baked goods like your Shilla or Le Matin as well. Fresh, pleasantly packaged breads, buns, and cookies, as well as cakes and more. All at seemingly affordable prices. And if anyone is willing to try the Pocari Sweat canned beverage to let us know what it is... well, bonus points to you. read more

Three and a half stars. Shares the tiny parking lot with a Chinese place, Shiseido boutique, etc. Pet peeve alert: baked goods sitting unprotected in the sun. Yes, I understand you're trying to draw in the few window shoppers you can in this tiny, isolated strip mall. But condensation forming on the inside of the bun wrapper doesn't make me a happy buyer. Service very friendly, feel is like a more earth-tones Shilla. Taro boba was scooped from the blender in lumps, creamy but mixed from powder. Tofu skin chips were my favorite out of the baked purchases, light and crunchy. Mochi was my second favorite, the right amount of chew and just enough sweetness. The buns were all appropriately sweet: green mung bean, azuki red bean, sweetened white bean. Split a loaf of pecan bread with Lia but it still took me a week to work through it-- very moist and sweet. I wish there had been a savory selection while we were there. read more

The owner speaks mainly Korean as it is a Korean bakery and when I introduced myself to him earlier tonight with my friends, he was very warm and humble. I know of a number of Korean bakeries in Annandale alone, and I'm afraid Napoleon probably is not my favourite. On a recent visit, we tried a mocha bean bread and chocolate custard bread and sat down for a while. Chocolate custard bread tasted like it needed more filling, whereas the mocha bean bread had too much. Or it was a tad too sweet for me. Anyone familiar with the conch shell bread at Breeze bakery? We felt like Napoleon's chocolate custard bread was supposed to be creamy, soft, and fluffy like the conch shell, but it just wasn't. Comparison to other korean bakeries in the neighbourhood is inevitable: we felt that Napoleon needed more variety and some unique offerings -squash bread at Manoa is an example- that could set then apart from competitors, as well as some de-cluttering. Music couldn't hurt, as it was dead silent when we were last here. Don't ask me why, but I would like to see all of them to be buzzing and successful, so I'll have reasons to visit all of them regularly. Unfortunately, I find it hard to think of reasons to go back to Napoleon anytime soon. read more

I visited this bakery looking for a different cake. Everyone who had it liked that it wasn't too sweet. The baked goods sold are from Korea so I'm guessing that the clientele is mostly Korean. Don't expect fast service, the attendant takes his time but eventually makes sure you leave with everything you need, candles and even a plastic knife; the box they use to pack the cake is sturdy and looks very presentable. read more

Cute little bakery located down the street from the USPS. They have tables for dining in and a parking lot out front. They sell a variety of buns, bread loafs, cakes, bubble tea, and bingsu. I bought the red bean bun and picked up the hot dog pizza bun and chocolate cake for the bf. There was some steam inside the plastic wraps which means they were baked fresh that day!
