Wow. This place is sooooo.... sl...oooooooooooow. Judging by how long it took all orders to come out, not just mine, it seemed like they were cooking everything to order from scratch. The chimichanga was good, but the California burrito was lacking a lot. Basically just meat and fries. There's cheese and sour cream in there too but they are completely lost in the flavor-muting fries. Needs more. Guac, cilantro, onions...anything. This is the sort of place that you would walk by without taking notice of. Big mistake. A hole-in-the-wall gem along the Coast 101 in Encinitas, right across from the La Paloma Theatre. I've only tried a carnitas taco, but for $2, this thing was sizable and delicious. Looks like they had a lot of other things on the menu that will be sure to bring me back again when I find myself in the area. My hubby says let's drive up the coast and get some lunch. I decided to check out Yelp first to get some ideas. He did say he kind of wanted Mexican and I came across this place and told him we should try to find it. We found it and had to park a block away, there are only a couple of stalls for the place. It's a small little joint with 2 windows, one for ordering and one for picking up. They have 2 umbrella tables taking up a parking stall and a small seating area to the side that is in a room. When we got there, it wasn't that busy, but a bunch of people came after us. We ordered the carne asada plate and burrito. The carne is very good, not greasy or tough or chewy...perfect. The plate came with salsa fresco, guac, and rice and beans. Everything was fresh, didn't feel heavy or greasy after eating it all. The hubby was a fan, he talked about his burrito all day. They don't take credit cards or large bills. A couple of times someone tried to pay with a large bill and she told them to go to the 7 eleven across the street to break it. We paid about $15 for our meal and 2 cokes. I hope to go back and have another great experience! read more

OK, I really thought the food was pretty decent. I ordered the Chili Verde Burrito and the wife had the Carnitas Burrito, they where both good and the price was fair. It was a nice day out in the afternoon when we stopped by and would have liked to sat outside to eat but ate inside instead which was OK. A small mom & pop type Mexican food stand right off of Coast Highway. I've walked past this place several times over the years but didn't stop there until today. I'm glad I did. I ordered a carne asada burrito and it was very good. Fresh guacamole that didn't come out of a squeeze bottle, and I opted for the red sauce, which was chunky. The burrito was not the largest, but still a good size and not greasy at all. There was a steady stream of customers while I was there, several ordering the fish tacos. Raul's is the best! The good is fresh and light! They have delicious veggie options too. It is not your typical heavy taco shop food.

We were in the area and looking for a good local spot to grab some food. This place popped up on Yelp as a local family owned place so we decided to give it a try. My daughter got a carne asada burrito and honestly it looked kid sized in comparison to the burritos we get other places (still adult priced though). I decided to try the fish taco plate and while it looked pretty, I realized 70% of it was just the cabbage on top. The sauce seemed yummy but it was only drizzled on top of the cabbage mound so I couldn't get any in bites with the taco. My husband got the carne asada plate and the amount of meat was minimal and the pieces were tiny. The plates come in a pre sectioned box where the give 3 bites of beans that aren't the traditional refried and maybe 4 bites of rice. All were filled with very strong raw onions that and we can could not get the horrible taste out of our mouths. Almost $30 for 3 items and 2 bottles of water and not very filling. read more

I walked here after finding the line outside the Taco Shop had a line outside the door. Instead I waited here about 15 mins for two tacos. There are a few tables for customers but the atmosphere is not welcoming. The prices are comparable to the Taco Shop which has way better atmosphere. When I asked why we haven't received our food the lady said, " she forgot". When I went a second time (thought I would give it another chance), the same thing happened, The two men ( one bald guy and another) Had no reason, they just said, " oh, I'm cooking it still." I attended Raul's tonight and I noticed there was a strand of hair in my burrito. I immediately brought this to the front worker's attention, and was shut down and accused that it was mine. This girl later on went to confront the cook and said that I ate the whole thing and implying that I was lying. Out of compassion and human decency I go up and say to her that it is not necessary for her to remake it and that I should have just brought it up to her attention. Although I am not the one to say what is a necessary action, she should have handled the situation way better. She accused me of putting the hair in, and gave me a rude attitude. Raul's always makes the best food and I am very disappointed to see this coming from them. She wasn't doing her job properly and essentially did nothing other than messing around on her phone and I believe this is unprofessional behavior. No refund or remake. I'm disappointed. read more

Fresh food. Good prices. All the standards you would expect. Their chorizo breakfast burrito is bomb as well as the 3 soft taco combo. Perfect! My only gripe its Cash Only(like most places on the 101)and if its busy you can wait a while as theres only one cook generally. definitely worth it. After countless unsuccessful attempts after work, I was finally able to try something. For my first time, I decided to go with the fish burrito, as it appears that the burritos here were a fan favorite. For the price (9.XX), it's a pretty decent size, nothing humongous, but not to the point where it's skimpy. In terms of taste, there is a huge piece of white fish, with a cabbage slaw. I love that despite it being fried, it was not oozing with grease with every bite, so I appreciated it a lot! In terms of the sauce that was in the fish burrito, it's definitely kind of bland, almost like a really really light sour cream, so if you're used to fish burritos from other Mexican food joints, this might come off to be a little flavorless to you. However, I personally enjoyed it because it didn't leave me feeling like I was breathing heavy after consuming this burrito and the salsas that came on the side definitely helped with adding some flavor. Raul's was a staple of my San Dieguito High School experience... 4th period history/econ made it easy to jump into our cars and fly down Santa Fe to 101, frantically calling ahead our orders for fish, carne asada, or Machaca burritos. That was survival in those days, and I was worried that in the years that have passed the quality might not be the same... So I found myself home for my pops 60th birthday today. We opened presents, sang happy b-day, and quickly I excused myself from birthday cake and literally flew down encinitas blvd. to get to Raul's before it closed. Best decision ever. Pulling into the extremely akward parking lot which clearly hasn't changed in 12 years despite every reason to do so I was encouraged that maybe some things just don't change. I ordered my Carne Asada burrito and watched the line of locals start to grow deeper and deeper behind me. Everyone else was ordering the fish, maybe I was mistaken with my carne asada order, maybe I should change it... nah... for the last three years I have been explaining to everyone how bad carne asada is in the bay area compared to my beloved Raul's, I had to stay true. SO GLAD I DID. Meat, Guacamole, Salsa Fresca. That's it, and it was beyond amazing. No Lettuce, no Sour Creme, no beans, no rice, no stale ass tortilla, no weak ass salsa... this is how a burrito is meant to be, and it was heaven. read more

I've had a lot of adobada and al pastor -- a lot. With that said, this is hands down THE BEST adobada I've ever had. After my friend and I had it one night, the entire next week became adobada week, replete with longings, withdrawals and nonsense references to adobada. Had to check this place out on a weekend in Encinitas. It's a little tiny restaurant, been serving great Mexican food to locals for years. They make a delicious chicken soup : ) Chunks of chicken, rice, spices and avocado! I had the Carnitas burrito, and I hear that the flautas are great. Will have to try them next time. Contrary to some other posters, this is NOT a competitor to Qero. Night and day. This is one of several locally owned, and very tasty taco shops in Encinitas. It does not do tres leches cake, empanadas or sangria. Those are all great at Qero, but if you want clean, tasty ingredients in a taco, you won't be disappointed.
