This review is long overdue. Raymond was my engagement shoot photographer from back in 2009 as well as my wedding photographer. He also did a family photoshoot for me with my husband and children in 2014. Helen was my hair and makeup artist for all of the shoots as well. They have also done business headshots for me. Out of all the hair and makeup artists I have worked with, Helen makes me look the best. The makeup doesn't look too heavy and looks very natural. I wanted to have a traditional Chinese tea ceremony for my wedding so my mom and I went to Temple City to track down a tea ceremony outfit. We had checked out a few places but By Design Photo and Bridal Collection had ones that were in good condition and the rental price was relatively reasonable. I also purchased the matching shoes there. It definitely helped that my mom and I both spoke Chinese but if you only speak English they can still help you out. They offer a full range of bridal services but we only rented the tea ceremony outfit from them. There is street parking, and additional parking in the back. read more

Save your time and effort and skip this place. A couple of weekends ago I checked out the bridal studios down Las Tunas and I thought By Design was one of the more affordable studios even though the dress selections are fairly limited. I talked to Helen and she showed me their special package for studio and wedding pics with video. But when I went back the following weekend to ink a deal and put down my deposit the head guy I met with kept raising the prices on me. At first he wouldn't even acknowledge that they had special packages until I told him Helen had shown them to me the week before otherwise he would have charged me a butt load. As is he kept raising the prices on everything else (dress rentals, hair & make-up, etc). I finally got fed up and left - there goes $5K out the door. Hope they enjoyed losing my business. read more

STAY AWAY!!!!!! RUDEEEE ASSSSS LADY! I walked in with my friends and sister and the lady was sooo rude. Even though we look young who says we don't want to give you our business. We didnt say we couldn't afford your shop. The shop looks run down and old. We asked to look at some samples of wedding albums and she gave us old album of previous customers. The style looks old too. We had to ask for more samples and asked for the price of the packaging. She didn't even sit and explain anything to us. Just here. Then I asked one of my friend to take a picture of the JUST the FLYER. And she says "no picture"; we told her we are only taking picture of the fucking flyer! But she still said "no picture" wtfffffff......It was a lot to write down and we couldn't take picture of the damn flyer??! FYI the flyer was on like a menu type of thing. read more

I've tried many hair and makeup services before making up my mind to go with Helen. And I have to say - this is the best decision I've ever made! I absolutely love how everything turned out! Helen did two styles for me - one is more elegant natural look with hair up-dos for the white dress, the other has more vibe with curly down-dos for the red dance dress. Both looks are astounding! I love them so much! Helen is very easy to work with, fast, knows what kind of makeup suits me and the dresses, a very talented artist! She also has a variety of accessory collection - necklaces, earnings, and various hair pins, you name it. She did a good job pairing the perfect accessories with my dress and makeup on my big day! Love it! I also rented the wedding dresses from them. It's so hard to find wedding dress rental nowadays. Not even mention their collections are large and on trend. Hands down! They did the alteration without extra charge, and the veil is included. When I had to make another fit/length adjustment, Helen just did it for me on-site and made sure it fits perfectly on me. I just recently got married and I was thankful for finding this shop. It was a one stop shop for us. We got a rental for my wedding gown and 2 evening gowns for a good price. They were running a special on their photography package so I also got a good deal for my engagement photo session and photography for the day of the wedding. After spending days and not being able to find the bridesmaid dresses and tux rental that I like, I came back here and they were able to help me with everything. The owner/make-up artist can seem to be a bit crass if you're not familiary with her, but she's really nice, and provided me with the best service compared to all the other wedding shops on that street. We got our studio and wedding photos, makeup and studio dress all here. Raymond and Helen were very patient and artistic. They explained different packages and gave good suggestion. They knew what we want but not pushy. They work with your budget, very reasonable. I got very good photos at affordable price. Both in- and outdoor options for photos are available. I rented my Cheong-Sam here, and although this place is a a little pricer than other locations they were much easier to work with. The shop was clean and fresh, and the styles to choose from greater than any other shop we visited. Also would like to mention that Cheong-sam's at this shop were in much better shape than at at other stores. Most stores only carry the sequined one, By Design had many different styles to choose from (modern, very very traditional, to fusion). read more

Very nice owners. I had to get sized for a suit and they measured me quickly and without hassle. I was concerned that since I wasn't paying for the rental at this location and it was through Jim's Formal (wedding is in FL) I would have a tough time getting sized. They were very friendly and professional and no hassle. I will rent here next time when I need formal wear in the LA area. This review is long long overdue. Sorry Helen & Raymond.. :-p You get more than you pay for. A lot of wedding studios out there charge double or triple of what you pay with By Design. However, if you are looking for something more modern or artsy or creative ideas, try somebody else. By Design is more of traditional style but good quality and excellent service. They have plenty of selections on dresses for rental which was included in our package. Not to mention they also included day-of-the-wedding photography with our package. The owners Raymond & Helen were both very friendly once you get to know them a little bit more. Loved what Helen did with my make-up and hair-do, very classy and natural and most importantly, not overdone.. LOL. Also loved her work on my mom, both make-up and hair-do, my mom has not looked this beautiful in a very long time. Great service from Raymond. Just 3 months ago, my (now) wife and I were shopping for a wedding photo studio around Temple City. We went into a few of them, discussed their package options, but things just weren't right. We were sadly driving away -- until we saw this place called "Design Photo & Bridal Collection". It wasn't very impressive on the outside, and the shop appeared a bit old. It was also not at the corner of a block (like many others), so easy to just drive right past. I decided to make a stop anyway, not expecting much. We felt comfortable after walking in. Just a loose atmosphere. We were greeted by Raymond. He sat down and discussed the package options with us. One of their packages included a variety of photo shoots, 2 large portraits, a large (glass cover) photo album (larger than other wedding shops; we have it now, it's absolutely stunning!!), etc... all at a lower price! Later, Helen, the hair stylist, came to greet us. (We all spoke Cantonese, but doesn't mater, they can speak English too.) They were very flexible (with pricing too), and able to meet our demands. On photo shoot day, Raymond had a helper to shoot with us. We asked to change multiple suits and dresses for the indoor photos, and they offered us a large selection with matching accessories -- even made the perfect recommendations for us! Hair style and all! Next we were heading outdoors. We wanted to go to different places for taking our wedding photos, and they complied (as long as the sun is still up). Oh, and Raymond also likes to suggest 'funny' poses which I thought were great! Our wedding was in a month, and I was still looking for an MC, DJ, and backdrop maker for the wedding stage. He recommended them all to us -- at reasonable prices too. (Now that the wedding is over, I can tell you that it went REALLY well! Many told me they had a great time -- some friends even asked if I can have another wedding party!) We hired Raymond as our photographer during the wedding ceremony too, and he was very cooperative, taking hundreds of photos. Again, personnel was important for us. We wanted to work with people who listens and cares, and not just trying to suck money from us. Raymond and Helen were just great from day 1. Every time I had a question, I called them and they promptly answered nicely. Here are a few other specific examples. After the photo shoot, we had to pick 2 for our main framed portraits. My wife and I were debating between the final 3... we just couldn't make up our mind. Raymond saw this. He came up and told us to stop arguing (jokingly), and gave us the 3rd portrait for free. Wow! (Granted, it is a bit smaller, but still a very generous gesture.) During the wedding, backstage, Helen stayed late to help my wife do a third hair design (again, for free) because she said it looks better for this last dress she'll be wearing. After the wedding, I lost the tie they let me borrow (a special design, not sold in stores), but they said it's ok, don't worry about it. I offered them some money, cause I felt bad about it, but they refused. These are just some examples. My wife and I often mention that we're so glad we found Design Photo for our wedding, one of the best decisions we ever made -- no joke. Seriously, I wouldn't be spending my time typing this if I don't really recommend this place. These people will work with you. Oh, I did ask why the shop looks so old from the outside. I asked them to paint it, and put up a more attractive sign. They said they wanted to, and even purchased paint, but the city don't allow them. All the shops on the street cannot be customized in any way without city approval. So that explains it! read more

With Raymond and Helen's help, I basically got everything important here- photography, videography, my dress, my bridesmaid dresses- I even worked with the florist and DJ that Raymond and Helen directed me to! Raymond and Helen definitely made our wedding day go a lot smoother. We got pretty much the whole package through them (engagement photo sessions, wedding day photos, tux/dress rentals and make-up). We did do some shopping at the other bridal shops, but we were put off by either the high prices or sales staff (we couldn't even meet and greet the actual photographers at some locations) that tended to ignore us because of our smaller budget. We informed Raymond what our budget was and what prices we saw at the other bridal shops. Raymond did his best to work out a package deal we were both comfortable with. The photo books and photo portraits all turned out good. Some photo books did take a bit longer to get completed though, but we weren't in that big of a rush. The tuxes and dresses worked out wonderfully. Their selection of dresses wasn't huge, but we found one that my wife liked. Helen did a good job with hair and make-up. Raymond was really diligent on the day of our wedding. Starting early in the morning and staying with us till the end of the banquet. He was friendly to the guest and didn't have to resort to barking orders like other photographers to get great pictures. I found the whole experience to be positive overall. First of all, I have to admit that Raymond and Helen provide great service and they are very easy to work with. They praised the suit looks good on me and help me to do alterations on the sleeves. However, the way they do business is not professional. I was trying to buy a tuxedo. They had measured my size and said I should wear a size 34 suit, but it arrived in size 36. I had tried it at their store, and they said it fits very good and looks very good on me. When I look at the mirror, I feel like it's a little bit too big, but I thought that might be the way it should look. After I took it home and tried it again, I realized it shouldn't fit like this. I googled how to tell if a suit fits. Objectively, the suit doesn't fit at all. I text Raymond to see if I can exchange the suit for a smaller size, otherwise I want a refund. He said there's no smaller size (which I had addressed this problem to him at the beginning, but he said it's no a problem), and I need to paid 25% restocking fee plus shipping which they had said it's free for exchange if they size doesn't in the beginning. In summary Pros: Good costumers service Good variety of choice Decent price Free alteration Cons: 25% restocking free if the size doesn't fit Lack of professional knowledge to tell if a suit fits Suits come in okay condition (multiple alteration mark, loose sewing) Suggestion: Make sure you have everything he promised you to be written on paper. Bring a friend who wear suits often to tell if the suit fits you, and not being misled by their praised. read more
