This place is a little hidden gem near Sawtelle. I grew up in LA and somehow never tried it until recently, but I'm really glad I finally did. I've been to a lot of the daytime lunch spots around Sawtelle and Little Japan, and in my opinion, nothing compares to the burger, fries, and drinks here. Ray and his staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and genuinely good hearted people. The food has this nostalgic backyard birthday party kind of taste, like a perfectly charred burger from the late 2000s, with fresh veggies and everything made just right. We went to Rays for lunch on a Wednesday. It's a walk-up style building & decorated nicely, seemed like a nice area. There were a couple people ahead of us but the line moved quickly (they must've been regulars or very decisive), it took a us a few minutes to decide what we wanted to eat but the gentleman taking our order was very patient & helpful. (I have to preface that I have Chicago, IL taste buds so flavor is a must.) We decided on the cheesesteak (split) with fries and a side of onion rings. I'm so glad my hubby requested seasoning salt instead of regular salt for the fries. They probably would've been good anyway, but the seasoning salt really set them off. We asked for a side of ranch (not a tasty brand- ) for the onion rings. They were cooked to perfection!!! Again no flavor to the breading but that was ok! The size and being perfectly cooked made up for that. The Cheesesteak included sautéed onions & peppers but seemed like it was missing a couple things....#1 you guessed it- flavor! #2- some type of sauce. The bun was a little too thick for the amount of meat/veggies. My taste buds says4.4. But overall, Ray's deserve 5 stars, th food was served very hot and fresh. So we ordered a western bacon cheese burger and a cheese burger and fries. We cot a coke and a 50cent cup of ice for the coke. The order taker was very pleasant. The service was somewhat quick. At about 10 -15 minutes. Rays charbroiled the burgers which is a huge plus. Charbroiled is always better!! The fries were mediocre. The ice cold coke was fantastic lol. If you are on the west side and are looking for a great little hole in the wall burger and lots of other stuff kinda joint. Both burgers were very tasty. Really good. read more

My favorite is the classic chicken teriyaki spicy sauce , I heard great things about the pastrami sandwich with egg and bacon so it's on my bucket list (update when I try it). Stopped in to this to-go burger spot for my first time and really enjoyed it. They have a large menu and portions. Service was quick, everything that we ordered was cooked well and had some great flavor. Parking can be tricky in this part of town depending on the time, but I was able to find street parking one block away. Everything that we ordered came out really fast and pricing is fair. This is not a sit down and eat kind of place, it is designed for to go, which is what I chose to do for this first visit. I chose the Patty Melt and added avocado because it's filled with cheese and large patties. It had some great seasoning on the meat and the bread was perfectly toasted. The french fries on the side weren't my favorite but still enjoyable. I would recommend and visit again in the future to try different items. read more

Amazing burger and service definitely recommend this spot. I would come back again, way better than bonbon burger around the corner that they are too expensive and they even took 50 minutes to make my food one time and I never got the food. I ordered through GrubHub and came here to pick it up. It's a small shack with a walk up ordering window and a few seats along their building. Staff were friendly and they were quick with my order. I ordered the supreme tuna sandwich. It was a really hefty sized sandwich filled with tuna, cheese, avocado, grilled onions, and tomatoes. It was delicious, although next time I will get it without the grilled onions. It added too much sweetness and took away from the tuna for me personally. But still great. I would come here again to get it, or try one of the many other items they have on their huge menu. read more

It's pretty cool that I only live a few blocks away from this place. The first time I came here it took a good amount of time for my food to be ready but I guess that's how you know it's made to order. It's pretty much a stand you walk up to and then there's some outdoor seating. This recent time I went I called ahead to put an order in. The salad comes with ranch, I don't know if you can get a different dressing. But the ranch was doable, so I didn't mind it though I don't like ranch on salad. The fries were shoestring fries with no seasoning. A little seasoning salt would've been nice. The chicken was flavored well and juicy. However it was thigh and fatty. I added grilled onion which was a nice addition. The people working there were friendly. I wasn't necessarily wowed. My parents have been singing the praises of Ray's for years. I never made the trek over while living in LA, and honestly, as a pescatarian I wasn't that sad about missing out on a meaty walk-up diner on the other side of town. After my dad raved about the breakfasts on my last visit I finally relented. My mom broke character and ordered the breakfast burrito (2 scrambled eggs, shredded jack, and cheddar and mozzarella cheese, hash browns, onions, peppers, tomato, choice of bacon, sausage or ham wrapped in flour tortilla. Served with house spicy chipotle salsa) which was beastly. We were expecting from the description that there would shredded rather than large chunks of potato in it, which made it clunky to eat. I had been considering getting one as well (sans meat) but felt even happier with my breakfast quesadilla (shredded Jack, mozzarella and cheddar, spicy chipotle mayo, 2 eggs). It was also massive and very delicious. Both were accompanied by a hot and flavorful salsa and even hotter grilled pepper. My dad always gets the Tuna Melt Supreme which had to be the biggest sandwich I've ever seen. Easy and popular retro take-away joint with some counter seating. Service was friendly and quick.
