Went to Black Sheep Burgers for lunch today. Don't be fooled by the name. They do not have any lamb burgers. Although Black Sheep Burgers has a vast selection of hamburgers (they probably should have called the place Black Cow Burgers) I had a Chicken Katsu sandwich. It was very good. I liked the option of being able to decide what I wanted or didn't want on my sandwich when ordering. I don't like avocados, so I ordered my sandwich without avocados. There are also a vast number of sides to order if you are very hungry. I was tempted to order the 40's french fries, but the sandwich was enough for me. Professional eaters probably would have ordered several sides. There is a large seating area outside. I sat outside. Other than the traditional problem with eating outside (your napkin, like the answer, may blow in the wind) since Black Shep Burger gave me several napkins, it wasn't a problem. read more

First off, great taste, but we were on a museum visit which brought us to the area, so we avoided usual staples in the area that are more value for the money. I really wanted to like this place...but I just didn't. It would take a lot for me to try it again. I didn't even take a photo. With so many burger places in LA to try...skip this one. I have spent the better part of my dining life, using my calories on burgers...and this one was not worth it. I didn't even finish. I tried their Katsu California burger. The crab mix on top was watery and flavorless. The burger was also under seasoned and a bit over cooked. They have to choose either better ingredients or a better flavor, but you can't lack both and keep up this reputation. Maybe I tried it too late in this restaurant's life cycle. I should've gone when the owners cared about it. I should have known when I walked in at 6pm on a Friday night and saw no customers in sight. It was dead in the dining room. There was only one person walking out as I walked in. All tables were empty. To their credit, the chili cheese fries were VERY good. I was so hungry, I ate those as my meal...but I guess I'm over restaurants that are supposed to specialize in one thing and do that thing in a mediocre fashion. I ordered the Sawtelle smash burger with their crinkle cut fries, both so delicious. The burger itself with the grilled onions had to be one of the best tasting burgers I have ever had in a while. This is a cute little spot I stumbled upon while out and about. The inside seating is very little mostly bar type seating. That's the only downside. I feel like this place is slept on and even I admit I forget it's there sometimes. But the burgers are delicious but today I opted for their breakfast sandwich and it was fantastic. Came to Black Sheep with my boyfriend around 2:30pm on a Tuesday so it was very quiet, we chose our own seats, and we got our food super quickly! I was actually surprised (and grateful) that the King James burger was NOT one of those overly large, grotesque burgers that you can't fit in your mouth. It was genuinely a good size, and the chili was nicely balanced with each bite. I was really glad that the chili didn't have loads of beans since beans aren't really for me - it was really more like a ground beef with a nice, lightly spiced sauce on it. Definitely was pretty messy, but it was comfortably filling, especially with the fries as well. I really loved their outdoor seating, there was PLENTY of it and there were cute seats indoors too! Today, Sunday, around 5pm, my wife and I went to BSB for an early dinner. A favorite of ours. The food was great as usual, service was super too, very attentive staff, so polite too. BSB should know, however, if they read this review, that the Yamaguchi parking lot attendant was unbelievably rude and aggressive. When we arrived told him we were going to BSB, parked our own car as usual, the guy handed us the pink parking ticket, said the restaurant validates and he takes tips. We had no cash on us, mentioned this to the restaurant staff, asked if we could pay more and get some cash for the guy's tip, they said they cannot do that (understandable, they must not be set up for it), also said they don't have a validation stamp, just show the guy your receipt. So.. as we went to the car, the guy barked at us he needed our ticket, as I handed it to him, he asked if it was validated, told him the restaurant said to show him the receipt, he showed his displeasure at receiving no tip, followed us as we walked to the car, and as we drove away shouted "next time park in the street". All very odd as we normally self-park there, the attendants have always been polite and never asked for validation or tips. Hardly seems that parking company - or at least this Sunday afternoon employee - is doing BSB and other tenants any favors. That kind of friction drives customers away. read more

We ordered the date burger ($14) and brunch burger ($13.50). The date burger was good (juicy and flavorful) as remembered, though the patty was overcooked and a bit dry. The brunch burger was unfortunately very disappointing, as there was little to no mayo and no other sauce, and the egg was fully cooked so the whole burger was dry (patty and bread included). As a result, the burger ended up being very unflavorful and hard to enjoy. Service was otherwise kind and quick, and the ambiance is low-key. Sawtelle has so many different places to eat. My girlfriend and I decided to give the place a try. The chicken katsu sandwich caught my attention, so I decided to give it a try. We also got the black sheep burger and french fries. The chicken katsu sandwich reminded me of the sandwiches I ate in Japan. Even though it has various ingredients, it all work well together. It was just over $10. The price seems to change online, depending where Google takes you, though. Perhaps the other specialty burgers are tastier. There is a weekday special of $16.95 with their house Black Sheep Burger, fries and soda or bottled water. Since I don't drink soda and didn't want to pay for bottled water, I skipped this deal and just wanted to try their BS house burer. Free parking lot adjacent. The entrance to the lot is on Mississippi, and the sign says YAMAGUCHI. For those who know the history, this location was the formal Japanese family owned Yamaguchi store. Stopped in for my first time last night for dinner, even though I pass it often because I live in the Sawtelle area. I was really impressed with the food quality, taste, and price. It won't be my last time stopping in as I already want to try more items. They have a free parking lot attached to the shopping center where it is located. The parking lot is literally just left of the restaurant. The guy behind the counter was really polite and everything was made very fast. It took a bit to choose which burger I wanted to try because they have a lot of great options on the menu. I decided to try the Date Burger and the California Chicken Burger. We also got a side of Chili Cheese Fries, and Regular Fries. The Date Burger seems to be the most popular order and I can see why. The goat cheese on it really made it for me, and the patty was seasoned perfectly. The California Chicken Burger was actually a stand out because the chicken was juicy and really matched well with the avocado. The fries were also really good and I really liked the chili cheese. It tastes closer to a Cincinnati Chili, but still it was very good. Overall, a great burger spot in a quieter part of Los Angeles. After a long day of driving around the city trying to find decorations for our new apartment, we got super hungry and wanted some burgers, which lead us to Black Sheep Burgers! This place isn't massive, but it was the best decision we could of made. We stopped here around 4PM on a Monday and the place was pretty dang busy for that time. The menu was plastered on the wall and after much deliberation I ended up ordering the special which was a fried crab burger (Okay, I could be wrong, but it was definitely a seafood burger and I wish I took a picture of the stupid menu). Let me tell you that I was expected a good burger from the reviews and the nice look of the place, but this thing was absolutely incredible. The burger itself was huge! The crab patty itself had so much flavour, I can't even begin to describe it, it was definitely the best seafood burger I've ever had. The special came with french fries and a drink, so with a sprite by my side the french fries are next up for review. These crinkle cut, salted fries were top notch and the perfect tag team partner for the amazing burger. Overall, Black Sheep Burgers gets five stars and a thumbs up from me. The restaurant itself was clean and looked great with both indoor and outdoor seating while the staff was friendly and quick to get the food served.
