Good thing Square One Brewery & Distillery was literally a block from where I was staying. I ate dinner there Saturday. Then went back for brunch Sunday. Part convenience, part damn good food. Folks, they have a smashburger made with bratwurst and Angus beef, topped with cheddar and bacon. (I subbed Swiss, and slathered that thing with Pale Ale Mustard and ... Holy Sammich, Batman!) Add perfectly executed (and perfectly salted), piping-hot fries and I was a very happy traveler. I also loved the neighborhood vibe. It's sort of the St. Louis version of "Cheers" -- friendly, relaxed and clearly a place where people know each other. And the spacious patio has just enough shade that you can actually enjoy being outside without slowly roasting yourself. I can't wait to try whatever else is on the menu when I inevitably find myself back near Lafayette Square in the Lou.

Street parking is almost always available near the brewery or across the street by the Lafayette Square fountain. Although a brewery, they also have a full bar when you walk in with a gorgeous arch window behind. You can grab a drink while you wait for your table. Their Strawberry Fields cocktail is really good! (Strawberry Basil infused Regatta Bay Gin, St. Elder, lemon, orange bitters, club) In this case, we went for brunch! We sat on their patio and ordered Mimosas and a Bloody Mary to drink. For food, we enjoyed omelets and pancakes. The pancakes were huge! I liked that the Seafood Omelet had hollandaise sauce on top. This is a big space and you can through a glass wall in the main dining area where they brew the beer which is neat! I recommend ordering a beer flight if it's your first time here so you can try a variety of their brews. Usually the flight includes your choice of four beer selections. Service here isn't anything exceptional but nothing bad either. Expect to wait a bit if coming for brunch Saturday or Sunday.

All four of us got something different (I think one was a blueberry beer of some sort... but don't quote me on that), and all the drinks were so good, that we had to pass them around for the other others to try! Ended up going down the menu and ordering another one for each of us, so we got to try eight drinks in total and all of them were epic! The bartender was super sweet, and right there, even though the establishment was pretty busy, as soon as one glass got down to 1/4, he'd come by and ask if we were ready for another, but wasn't intrusive as much as just making sure we were OK and seeing if we needed anything. He was there and gone in a flash, as I think, he thought that since we were two couples, he didn't want to interrupt any conversations, but wanted to make sure we were taken care of. We made sure to tip him well. The restaurant was clean, the bathrooms were fantastic, especially for a late evening out at an establishment that serves liquor, it felt like a high-quality establishment, but in no way did we feel out of place, nor were we made to feel out of place. If anything is the exact opposite. The bartender made it where it was very warm and welcoming in a good place to socialize for us. We will definitely be back! Next time and time to try the food too!
