Clam chowder wasn't that good, we were looking forward to a thick, rich chunky soup, but it tasted like it was thickened with flour and wasn't very creamy. Staff are incredibly friendly and kind. The atmosphere is great with ocean views. The food is bland and tasteless. This may be perfect for an older generation that prefers this fare. We were celebrating my wife's 75th birthday. There were 7 of us including our grandsons age 11 and 13. My wife and daughters had lobster, said it was the best they've ever had. My haddock roll was on a grilled bulkie roll with a generous portion of fish. Grandsons had chicken fingers from the kids menu and our son in law had the chicken fingers from the regular menu. We were all very pleased with our meals. Our server, Mel was as good a server as I've ever had. She was always cheerful and willing to accommodate. She took group pictures and brought plates and plastic wear for the cake we brought in. Ray's is pricey but so are most restaurants with an ocean view on the New England seacoast. We tried Rays for the first time on Memorial Day weekend. For a holiday weekend the area was relatively slow, which was nice for us. Arrived at Rays around 2pm. The bar on the top deck appeared to be busy, we sat in the dining area and was the only table seated. We started with the crab cakes...my boyfriend described them as "deep fried cat food hockey pucks"..they were not quite that bad...but the inside of the crunchy exterior certainly did resemble something close to cat food. I ordered a scallop roll and my significant other order a lobster roll. We waited over 20 minutes, the waitress never checked for refills on our drinks or to apologize for the meal taking so long. (jeez how long could it take to prepare these two items at 2:00 in the afternoon!!) The scallops were good, I will admit. Lobster roll ok. When the bill came I was charged 7.50 for a small glass of wine...at a place with plastic covered tables! read more

My husband and I ate here recently. It was a terrible experience all the way around. Food was horrible. I ordered a lobster salad. The quality of the salad was disgusting. The lettuces was slimy and poor quality. The lobster was just thrown on top of the salad. Looked horrible!! The service was awful. Took forever to get our food. It was served on paper plates with tiny glasses for your water. Awful! The bathroom was digesting. The toilet seat was hanging off. The whole experience was awful. Pleased with all of our food but I must say that the Ray's Rootbeer (in bottle) is about the best I've ever tasted! Had to get 2 bottles! Usually a place I love. Horrible experience tonight. Ordered two baked stuffed lobsters for $39.99 each they were supposed to have extra lobster meat and be baked stuffed. They were two boiled lobsters with ritz cracker sprinkled on top. When I brought it to the managers attention she claimed it was baked. And stuffed. I told her we had to crack the tails and she insisted that's how it's made. I get it a lot at other places and never had it made that way. Will never return again. read more

My husband anId I made a stop here yesterday as we were making our way through New Hampshire's seacoast. First, as we walked into the restaurant, I noticed that the place was tastefully decorated. Secondly, the staff was incredibly friendly. Third, the food was what you'd expect from any seafood place -- I ordered calamari and my husband fried clam strips and the food was decent. Fourthly, the bathrooms were clean. However, here were a couple things that could use some improvement. It seemed a bit odd eating from paper plates and paper cups. Every time we go to the Weathervane (an NH chain), we're given clean porcelain cups and plates. The paper cups and plates honestly seem to be a bit cheap. My husband and I visited New Hampshire for the first time, along with two of our friends (who had been before). Our first dining experience was at Ray's. We got there at lunch time and ended up staying through dinner. We started with two seafood platters (which served all four of us) and later ordered fried lobster, steamers (overall favorite for all), seafood chowder and lobster chowder (my personal favorite). Everything was great, from the food to our bartenders. And though it may sound silly, the tarter sauce and cole slaw were really good too. During our stay we visited Boston, MA and Portland, ME and still ended up returning to Ray's for one more meal before going home. We had lobster rolls and birthday cake ice cream - which we really liked! This will be a sure return for us when we make it back up to New England - which was beautiful. read more

I only give one star because there is no option for no stars. Been coming for years, including both nights I was in the area during the covid crunch last year when Ray's was begging for customers. This year is different. No one answered repeated calls so we headed over and got to the restaurant right before 8. We were promptly "greeted" by a young blond waitress who rudely told us they were closed. The website and Facebook say nine but "they are wrong, covid hours". Not a pleasant girl but she did say we could get takeout. My party and I proceeded outside to view the takeout menu since this was our only option. After three minutes we went to the window and we're told again the restaurant is closed and that was that. As we left disgustedly a family of four came bounding up the steps. The same waitress who told me at the takeout window to screw greeted the couple of four and proceeded to sit them on the upstairs deck and hand them menus. Right in fucking front of us. I yelled up to her and she said nothing and scurried away. I'll will go out of my way to tell every person I know this story and make sure to tell every guest of mine to avoid Ray's at all costs. I'm pretty humble and support small places because things have been so bad for those who go work in the restaurant business. The staff at Ray's don't deserve the jobs they have. It's been six years since my last Yelp review, but the attitude and the lack of any respect was eye opening. read more

Food is fresh and pretty good. Fried seafood is done well. Negative comment is based on dishonest pricing. They sell many items by the pint and quart. I ordered a quart of cole slaw and it was served in the exact 16 oz container my 12 oz chowder was served. Also, the "pint" of scallops was not more than a cup. We have been to Rays at least 6 times over the last 2 years...we've always had a wait but didn't mind. We've always went for dinner. Today we went for lunch...first time visiting off season at lunch...the service was terrible and slow. The food was barely warm when received and we had to send the appetizer back twice (clam fritters) they were burnt...our waitress said they were well done! Three of us went two days ago. Wife got a tuna melt, tuna was the cheap dark meat, almost cat food. She ate half didn't want the rest. The fries that came with it were over fried in cheap oil, we each tried a couple but threw them away. I got the hot lobster roll, very little meat covered in some not so tasty red butter sauce, roll was too soggy to pick up. Good food/HORRIFIC service. Just horrific. I am in Rye with a couple of friends for Memorial Day Weekend. We pulled into town late last night and noticed they closed at 9. We called in on the way to Rye hoping to just quickly run in and pick up the food. We walk in and stand by the register where tons of people are working in the kitchen and walking in and out. We stood there for a SOLID 10 minutes and nobody said not one word to us. Not one word! One older woman stood at the register with her head down practically the entire time and didn't utter a peep. It was not too busy in there and all that would have been necessary is for someone (ANYONE) to say they would be with us shortly. Nope. Finally a hostess came and asked if we had been helped. I said not as yet and that we were here to pick up food we ordered. She went around the register and got our food and handed it to me. As she is handing me the food a young girl comes running from behind the register reaching her arms out saying WAIT....insinuating that we had not paid for the food. Mind you....we were not walking or out or looking as though we were attempting to leave. I handed her my card and said "Yes, that is why we are still standing here." We order 72 dollars worth of food and they deserved not one penny of my money. If you don't have to go here DONT. Awful customer service. I hope the owners see this review. I am not from here but it looks like this is a norm for this place. Also, the fries are frozen. The lobster was good but overall it is just way over priced and poor service. We just got home from having dinner at Rays Seafood. We ate there because we couldn't get into Petys or the Beach Plum. I guess there is a reason that we got right in to Rays. The Lobster chowder was the worst chowder I have ever had. When I had first seen it I should have taken it back immediatey...It looked like a cup of melted butter. After about 3 small bites I was left with nothing more then milk and melted butter. I decided this was just horrible after paying $9.99 so I went up to the counter and told them how disappointed I was. They said that was too bad but that is how "old People" like it. They wouldnt remake it or refund us. I don't know anybody old or young that would like that dish. The food was amazing, but the service was some of the worst I've ever experienced. We sat ourselves and waited a few minutes to get menus. Finally, one of my friends got a the menus for us. My friends and I were about to walk out of the restaurant after waiting for over 20 minutes to get service when the waitress caught us at the door and begged us to sit back down. She offered us a round of drinks and better service, but once we got our food, she never came back around and when it was time to leave, we stood at the front next to the cash register waiting for our bill for at least 10 minutes. The restaurant wasn't even that busy. I would hate to see the kind of service this place provides in the summer when it is probably much busier. Warning: many sides or their "upgrades" are an extra charge, which is not listed on the menu. The Lobster roll price does not include French fries, as does almost everything listed under the sandwich section. We were quickly told our fries could be upgraded to sweet potato fries or onion rings but the price was not mentioned. When we asked the waitress about it after seeing the bill, she was a bit rude. BAD! BAD! BAD! We have been going to Ray's for a number of years and previously would have recommended Rays. However, it seems that the last couple of years things are going downhill. I stopped in with a friend that had never been there for dinner. The wait was approximately 35 minutes, which we expected especially for an in-season seafood restaurant in this area. I can't tell you how bad things got during our dinner. The people behind be were complaining about the food being cold, cost for the portion sizes and not receiving what they ordered and I thought perhaps they were just being a pain. Unfortunately, their complaints were more than warranted after our experience. Order order was: 1- Beer 1- Ginger Ale 1- Clam Chowder 1- Fish & Chips 1- Order of Mussels 1- Fried Scallops 1- Water with lemon Not too complicated, right? Asked for the chowder first, it never came, when it did finally come it was cold and tasteless and I sent it back. I received my second chowder at the end of my meal that was barely lukewarm. Asked for water with lemon 3 times, it never came. Order of Mussels never came. Fish and chips were lukewarm and fries were soggy and cold. Asked for new fries 3 times, they never came! Asked for an extra tarter sauce, three times in came after my fish was stone cold. The waitress was having a complete meltdown, and she indicated that the kitchen was in a complete meltdown. She said, "You must think I am the worse waitress in the world!" We actually had sympathy for her despite her meltdown, because it appeared that the kitchen had a major role in what was happening. I can't remember the last time I had this bad of an experience in a restaurant! The waitress didn't charge for the clam chowder, and took the Mussels off the bill that we never received. Finally got tired of asking for the new fries and water and gave up. The portions are getting smaller every year we go there, but the prices stay the same. Really disappointed with the quality, portion sizes and service. I am writing a letter to the owner/management and we will see what kind of response I get, and I will update my review. On a very good day, Ray's is just another average seafood place, with high prices and smaller than average potion sizes. I would now consider other options for eating in the area. read more

Wow. Worst lobster roll I've ever had. Got the "hot" version. For 15.99 I received MAYBE 2 claws worth of meat. Maybe. Probably closer to a claw and a half. On a hot dog bun. Yes, it was hot.
