Dog lovers, we found such a great little spot that I almost don't want to share... but I have to. Head to Recreation Park, specifically the far northeast corner near the lawn bowling greens. It's quiet. Shady. Lots of grass. Gentle hills that make throwing a ball way more fun than it should be. Bring a blanket, park nearby (just not directly in front of the lawn bowling unless you're okay gambling with the occasional errant ball ), then relax. Watch the bowlers, throw a ball for your dog, read a book, eat a snack, take a nap, or just touch some grass for a while. My review is really just for this little corner of the park because that's where we spent our afternoon. But Recreation Park itself has a huge dog park, a playground, tennis courts, golf, ball fields, a bandshell, and even an area for fly-casting practice. Last weekend I drove out to El Dorado Park looking for this exact feeling. Ironically, this little corner of Recreation Park delivered it even better. read more

This park is like a big garbage dump from all the bins toppled over and picnic leftovers strewn throughout the grass area. Pretty disgusting. You can count on this during and after every weekend. The dog park and the owners are responsible and respectful of the property. The homeless also seem to, for the most part, clean up their areas once they are forced to leave. It's the large picnic parties that seem to be the problem or the city not providing enough garbage bins in the area. Quite a disgrace to the community. read more

Review for the dinosaur playground: Nice job with the theming of the playground, with several unique features including a "fossil dig" sandbox and a climbable T-rex. There's some shaded areas but generally a lot of exposure. There are benches and picnic tables, but these areas are often littered and dirty. The squirrels here are also bold and get uncomfortably close at times. Overall, the playground itself is cool, but the appeal of the park is diminished by many factors other reviewers have already mentioned -- lots of litter, lack of bathrooms nearby, no fence/gate to protect kids from 7th St, and the occasional presence of homeless people. read more

Such a nice park in Long Beach. My kids loved climbing all the structures and going down all the slides. The fossil dig area is a nice addition and has some shade umbrellas. There is a little area that has a swing merry go round. Only con was no bathroom nearby. Otherwise it was clean and we love visiting Long Beach. read more

Review is for the dinosaur themed park. Overall, this is a great park. It's clean as long as people pick up after themselves and so far, no complaints. The restroom is about a 2-minute walk from the playground closer to Park and 7th, it's in an older building but it's clean. The fossil dig area is really fun, we bring extra buckets, shovels and toys to share with the other kids. Most of the kids are very appreciative and play well with each other. The slide structure is great, but it can get really crowded. The other day, I had a parent tell me to watch my kid because he was aggressive towards his daughter. My grandson was not the aggressor, his daughter was hitting my grandson on the stairs to the top of the slide, she hit him at least 3 times, all he did was block her hands, he didn't hit her. His child wasn't even supposed to be on this slide; she was only about 3 years old. I just called my grandson over and we played in another area. That parent wasn't worth my time. Overall, all the playground users get along great therefore it's very enjoyable. Park is clean and there's a restroom. read more

This should be called "Dinosaur Park." It's so fun with little kids. Theres plenty to do for a child under 10. There's fossils to find underneath the sand in the sandbox, there's dinosaurs to climb, a large space to run and play with other children, plenty of parking for parents and seating. We loved it so much! We plan to visit every year :-) read more

I would give this place 3.5 stars. I like that it has two designated areas for younger kiddos and older kiddos for sure. Nice grassy areas surrounding, but if you have a kiddo like mine, keep in mind that the busy street is just a short downhill run from the park. The other not so great part is that there is quite a bit of trash/litter around, which my 17 month old loves to pick up and try to put in her mouth before i try to stop her. Some people roaming around that appeared to have some mental health issues as well, so something to keep in mind. I would bring her back, but it would require more monitoring on my part... read more

Writing about the dinosaur playground at recreation park. The playground is a few years old and even though that area is newly(ish) refreshed the surrounding area of the park need to be updated. My children love this park, its a fun dinosaur theme with actual large dinosaurs to climb, they love it. However I do not. The bathrooms are a far walk from the playground, they're dirty and need an update. The park is over crowded on most days with a lot of large parties as well as small groups, which leads to over full trash cans and more litter around the park. During the school year the high schoolers walk over and take over the park making it so the littles can't play plus get exposed to not so great language. Who ever planned the park tried with adding shade umbrellas but where they are placed there isn't really any shade unless you go to the trees and then you can't be actively watching and with your kids. Parking is usually full and people park in the bike/no parking lane without consequence, again poor planning of the park. And on top of all of this the park is extremely close to 7th street wich is a very busy fast street, all it takes is one kid to run down that road or one car to lose control, it makes me nervous. When my kids ask to go here I try to in the morning before crowds, again they like the playground I'm not a fan and wish the city put more thought and planning into it. read more

Review for the Dinosaur park area, I really wanted to like this park but today I experienced a girl I won't call her a woman because her actions were very much like little girl attitude, but she was extremely rude to me and yelled at me because my 5 year old son accidentally ran passed her son and he fell, mind you her son was not supposed to be on the 5-12 yr old section. He was supposed to be playing between the 2-5. And she said you need to tell your son to be carful she didn't even approach me she yelled at me. So I'm not going to respect someone if they can't simply come up to me respectfully and address the situation. Then she started getting into it with another parent cause that parent got involved because she was being so loud and cussing and not being respectful of other children around and she kept saying I don't give a F* then she got mad cause I said to the person that was with her can you stop starring at me. The she starts yelling again like don't say nothing to her she is autistic like how am I supposed to know that, she kept mad dogging me so I assume she has a problem with me to an I simply said stop starring at me this girl is so crazy, like she needs help controlling her emotions I've never met anyone like that in my life at any park so definitely not returning here. I was trying to be calm about everything and speak to her but she kept talking over me and shouting at me and calling me weird B* read more

Very cool, new playground equipment with lots of activities for different age ranges. Come early or later for max shade.

Good muni-course, I come here a couple times of week. I really like the driving range, bar, food menu and the courses.

What a great park! I went here last weekend with my fabulous yelper friend Traci D. It is huge, I checked the website and it is 210.9 acres! There are also a couple golf courses, tennis courts, lawn bowling, and several fields. There is also a recreation center which has offers all sorts of classes. My reason for going there was to have a picnic and to catch up with a friend. We found a bench that was shaded by some trees. Nearby were families picnicking and playing together. It was beautiful here and it really had a great vibe. Ample parking! If I lived in Long Beach I would go here everyday. read more

Great golf facilities. No homeless encampments, somewhat clean, what more can you ask from a municipal park facility?

Started going here to get more into golf. They have a decent driving range at the 18-hole course and the 9-hole course is 3-4 par (great for a beginner like me) - $19.95/person on weekends. There's TONS of other sections of the park that we haven't explored yet...lawn bowling, tennis courts, etc. But it's also a great park to bike through. Beware - the squirrels are SUPER friendly. I helped a client plan a team building game in this park, and it was the perfect location. There was fun and games as well as food trucks, and everyone had a wonderful time. Parking was easy, there are enough landmarks that you can help people give directions, bathrooms are convenient enough (they are public park bathrooms, so you might meet somebody taking a shower in the sink), but highly recommend this for tossing a football around, scavenger hunts, or family or company picnics. I'm so disguest by the city worker who closed the restroom. I have a 4 & 3 year old girls who needed to used the restroom and when I got to the restroom, a male city worker stood in front of the women restroom. I asked if he was locking up, he replied yes. I asked if my little girls can used it before he did. He said was a rude tone, there's already a guy in the woman restroom. A man? Really? why did you let a guy use the restroom with girls still going into the restroom? So disgusted, I asked my girls if they can hold it until we find another public restroom. Mind you it was still 7pm. The park does not close until ten. Why does the restroom have to be close already? I pay tax money which pay these worker who close the restroom. I understand that it might be his job to close the restroom at a certain time, but if you see people running to use the restroom, does a couple of minutes waiting hurt you? Ugh! I'm taking a Qi Gong class through Long Beach Parks and Recreation on Tuesdays at this location. I'm loving the class, although I feel/look like a dork spaz learning the movements. "It takes time, grasshopper" I keep telling myself. I'm definitely going to continue with this. It takes me out of my comfort zone and everyone can use a little more chi in their lives. read more
