I've been into mystery's and thrillers lately and had forgotten a book at home, so I wanted something to read on the beach. This place is packed with books, with an interesting lay out, and a chill vibe. I had a hard time finding specific books on my Goodreads list, but walked away with a classic thriller I've never read "A Simple Plan", and a cozy mystery "The Thursday Murder Club". My husband and I probably spent 90 mins looking at books and the staff left us alone, only asking if we needed help once. The best part...they were having a big sale so both books were under 4 bucks. Definitely worth a visit!

I came across this place on my visit to Monterey and decided I would go and check out the store. I went with my wife and three kids ages 7, 5 and 8 months old. I was carrying my 8 month old in her baby carrier. As I opened the door to the business, an older bearded man with long hair who worked behind the counter prevented my family from entering the store saying that the business was full and he did not want children in the store. He went on to say there was also water damage which is not my problem and completely unprofessional to tell a first time customer. The man was extremely rude and appeared bothered by me and my family. I responded by saying that I would take my business elsewhere and he slammed the door shut behind me like a child! Never have I experienced such a rude and disrespectful attitude from a business. My children asked why the man was so angry and I told them that it wasn't their fault and we would not support a business who treats people that way. I will never go here and will make sure all of my friends and family stay clear of this place. I come from a family with military and law enforcement backgrounds and this man made me and my family feel less than and unwelcome as first time customers! This was a bizarre and wild experience as a proud American to endure.

Lots of new books that were on display that piqued my interested as well as older hardcovers that made me take pause. It was a welcoming space with quotes on the walls from authors, notably Steinbeck. Several customers came in asking for titles which the store managers readily knew about. I was able to ask about Fort Ord, since it was relatively nearby and maps were on display. Being an out-of-towner, I asked Trish the store manager about James Dean and learned about the significance of his last drive. She also gave us some advice to read the first chapter of America and Americans to get a sense of how Monterey was back then. Very informative and lovely conversation.

Although the layout is average for a store itself kinda cramped when walking through the store. Downtown Santa Cruz, definitely needs to keep this store around I know Santa Cruz wants to tear everything down and build apartments everywhere it seems. I always raid their movies section, because I still collect physical media and I'm NOT on board with streaming, I never leave streetlight empty handed. The best part? NONE OF THIS IS CRAZY EXPENSIVE! I left the store with four movies, I could've easily got more but I decided to get the HELL OUT OF THERE before my wallet took a huge dive. I particularly like this record store more than Redwood because of the large variety of music genres. I saw how they had some of my dad's favorite bands like REM and carried older albums of my favorite artists. My boyfriend and I were able to score an old Lil Wayne album as well. Love the charm this place has and they are able to cater to everyone's kind of music. Still giving niche, but up to date as well!
