I just got food to go at the new Hong Kong Cafe thinking this was the old Red Apple, which had delicious food. It's ruined. The food is now mediocre at best. We noticed a difference immediately. What a disappointment. Will not be ordering food from here again. A new shiny interior does not make up for a sharp decline in quality. The service was great. The young lady server is very personable and friendly. We went there for Valentines Day around 3:15 pm. We've enjoyed dining there for many years. Oh my!! Yellow fried rice? Curried spring roll?! Newest owners have no idea how to cook good food. This was AWFUL!! Lemon was not lemony and it was off color, sweet and sour was orange and tasted funny. Done with this place. Bar must be keeping them open. read more

I was a loyal customer with the old owners. Food was always really good. I've been here a few times since the new ownership. The food is good, but not as good as it once was. The staff is very friendly. The real complaint i have now is their timing is off. It seems like they only cook one dish at a time. When i go here with my girlfriend, they always bring one of our orders out substantially earlier than the other. So we have to just sit there while one of our dishes gets cold, while waiting for the other to finally get their food. If they could bring out our food at the same time, it wouldn't be a bad place to eat. read more

However - Several times recently I've gotten dinner there and with few exceptions been very pleased! The restaurant is totally separated from the lounge, and while not teeming with ambience, is large and clean. Some items (sweet & sour chicken, for example?) are prepared a bit strangely, but overall this is some of the best Chinese I've found in Oregon. We've been going to the red apple for years. Everything used to be good. Tried it again with the new owners, and some of it was ok, most was not. The crab puffs have fake crab meat, but mostly cheap tasting now. The egg rolls used to be the best part of the meal. I took one bite and spit it out. If you like curry, you'll love them... but who puts curry in an egg roll?!? The general tso isn't bad, but resembles more of an American chicken wing than what you'd expect. Upon getting this take out home I had immediate regret. The orange chicken was stuck together like glue. The kung pao chicken was slimy and the spring rolls were so greasy they had soaked the container. We ordered 3 different combo meals and the only thing that was edible was the chicken lo mein. Customer service was great and after understanding the dual bar and restaurant I can see it getting busy, but the food came out fast, I was greeted and the food was excellent in my opinion. The fried rice was one of the best as it didn't seem overly dry. Portions are generous and veggies fresh! The sauce in the special was just enough savory and not overpowering. I gave a four star because my service was great, food was delicious, and price affordable. The space was clean and roomy. I had an amazing experience. The Red Apple is definitely my top spot for Chinese food. Even though there are quite a few closer to where I live, I always travel the extra miles to get my fill here. The food is of great quality and the staff are always friendly. I will order the exact same things at other restaurants and not be as satisfied as I would be here. Their pork fried rice is the best I've ever eaten and their crab puffs are delectable. The chicken fried rice is moist and their many entrees provide an array of taste sensations sure to please. Yes, some of it can get a bit greasy but what a great guilty pleasure. They do have a bar connected to the restaurant which is nice. They have a few pool tables and if you catch them on the right night, they might be doing karaoke (with a song book that contains one of the widest array of genre choices I've seen in a karaoke bar). The dining room is quite lovely and very homey. Open on most (if not all) holidays, it's a great environment for a family out or a couple just looking for some quiet time alone and some romance. read more
