Food, service, wine - it's all so good! ! was excited to try The Driskill Grill after the renovation. Its dark and vibey - like you're at a speakeasy. Service is top notch. All servers are nice and friendly. I had the Oysters and WOW. Massachusetts and Rhode Island were incredible. For entrees - we got the tenderloin, branzino, and crab fried rice. The crab fried rice has a little heat -and was my favorite part of the meal. The Branzino was fresh - and so delicious. The tenderloin was cooked very well. This was a special weekend as we had company who had NEVER been to TEXAS & came with a rather primitive option/expectation. Upon entering we were greeted by a friendly host, then seated in a room off the main dining room, and that was TERRIFIC! French onion soup was too sweet for me but my husband liked it. Crab fried rice was too salty for me. The baked Alaskan dessert had too much alcohol flavor. Was very excited to try out the new Driskill Grill since they just went through a full renovation of the space. I wasn't able to see the old space so this is all new for me. Made a reservation for 645 on a Thursday and ended up sitting at the bar, which is very nice and spacious. The service could definitely use a little bit of help. I don't know if it was cause I was single not with a group, but definitely lagged between two different individuals at the bar. When a couple sat next to me, there definitely was a distinctive difference in the level of service provided. And by lagged, I mean, I ordered a glass of wine before I ordered my appetizer. The appetizer arrived before the wine and I ended up having to remind them about the wine as well. Second item that made the service lag was when you order steak a steak knife was not provided until after the steak arrived, and remember that couple that sat next to me the steak knife was delivered at the time that they placed their order. For the price point they are asking, details matter. I asked the gentleman if he was there before the renovation, and he let me know that all of the staff or at least most of them were newcomers due to the long timeframe that the restaurant was under renovation. Let me also explain why some of the service could use a little bit of improvement. Started off with a shrimp cocktail, which was made directly next to me at the raw bar and came to the bar within about 5 to 10 minutes after ordering the shrimp were delightful. Not quite sure what the cocktail sauce had in it as it definitely wasn't just the plain cocktail sauce however it did pair well with the shrimp. For dinner I ended up getting the Wagyu ribeye, which was kind of disappointed to be honest. When I think of Wagyu steak, you typically thinking of highly marbleized beef that is very tender and easy to chew and most of the time typically will melt in your mouth. This steak was definitely not that. The side I started on seemed to be just a regular typical steak nothing special about it. Yes, it was cooked to the correct medium rare however there was nothing tender about it or even marbleized and it was even a little bit more lean than I would expect just for a ribeye in general. I did end up getting the broccolini as a side, and that honestly was probably my favorite part of the meal. The bartender did wrap up the remainder of my steak as I ordered the Keylime pie for dessert. The Keylime pie I think the meringue on top tasted a little bit funny but I did enjoy the actual Keylime pie itself. Now the wrapping of my steak was held behind the bar or in the kitchen somewhere and I ended up leaving the restaurant without even remembering to ask for it before I departed. I got about halfway down seventh and I heard my name being called as one of the gentleman at the bar came after me to make sure I had my leftovers. Since the steak wasn't that memorable, that's probably why I didn't remember to try to take it home with me Needless to say, there are definitely many other steakhouses in the Austin area, I would not recommend this place for steak maybe for something else so I would go back to try other items on the menu, just stay away from the steak. read more

Y'all! If you like fine dining with a side of live jazz music, you have to visit the newly renovated and newly reopened Driskill Grill! I have been waiting patiently for them to reopen and I was not disappointed at all. Date night, girl night, fine dining night! For my Friday date night, I made a reservation for 2 on Friday at 9p. I typically prefer 8:00 p.m. but 9:00 was all that was available. There is a valet right in front of the restaurant, I believe it was $25 plus tip. We were greeted when we entered and I was just in awe of the beautiful renovations. There was live music playing, jazz style on piano, there's live music every weekend I believe Friday, Saturday & Sunday. We were greeted by our server within 5 minutes of arriving then escorted to our table. Our server was super attentive and friendly. There was bread and butter brought out to the table and we both ordered cocktails. I had the Driskill martini and it was strong! My partner ordered a Mexican martini and it did not disappoint. It's not on the menu but they have a full bar so they made one. We ordered the petite Seafood Tower, Waldorf salad and red snapper. Please keep in mind that this is considered fine dining and the prices correlate. Cocktails on average are $19 to $24, petite seafood Tower was close to $100 for a 2 layer platter of fresh seafood. The Waldorf salad was not a traditional Waldorf but was fresh and had great flavor. I liked the cheese that was incorporated. The snapper was not a whole snapper just a piece of the fish and nothing comes with it all of the sides are all a la carte. I would like to come back for lunch on the weekend, there's live music and a lunch menu with lunch price. Just so that I could try more and stay within a reasonable budget. The Driskill Grill is perfect for a large party, special occasion, or anniversary date! The atmosphere is very intimate, as it is tucked behind the hotel bar/restaurant area behind glass doors. The difference between the quiet in the Driskill Grill versus the bar outside is actually quite stark. The decor is fancy, classic, and elevated. We ordered the duck, which was fantastic. The portion was large, the duck was tender and flavorful, the risotto was creamy, the dried orange peel pieces were interesting, mushrooms were yummy, sauce was perfect and added another dimension. For dessert we had the roasted banana semifreddo which was also good. I had never heard of or had a semifreddo so I was curious about it - I think it's ice cream but the texture is closer to a tiramisu or dense cake. I had called ahead to ask about parking and they said they validated valet parking. In reality they only validate $10 off of the original $30 valet price. read more

Impeccable food, service and ambience. I'm from LA and I would compare it to Musso and Frank's--but on steroids. There is more privacy because of the distance between tables. The selection of wines was fabulous with the help of a knowledgeable sommelier. The cocktails were smooth and flavorful. The Caesar Salad was beyond-no crusty croutons but tasty bread crumbs dusted over the lettuce with a divine dressing. The T-bone and fish were perfectly cooked. I'd just been talking in the days prior to our visit about Baked Alaska which I'd never had--and what do you think was on the dessert menu? It was delicious as was the chocolate cake. Our server was elegant and quietly attentive without the over-friendliness of too many restaurants. Came in here a few weekends ago on a Saturday evening to celebrate my friend's birthday. Overall vibes n ambiance: old-time fancy schmancy / kinda reminds me of the 1st class floor on the Titanic, stiff energy Both the food & service were mediocre. Overall, i walked away feeling pretty underwhelmed given the big hype this place gets. I mean, yet another menu downtown with little to few options/selections. Due to this, i settled with ordering the mac n cheese side dish for my food, which was creamy and tasty & worth the dairy/carb splurge, especially for a night ahead filled with booze. Another friend ordered their biscuit board & caesar salad; she said both were just okay, and that some of the biscuits/bread tasted on the staler side. The birthday girl of the evening ordered the spinach spaghetti entree, & loved it! We got a few rounds of drinks, including martinis we all enjoyed. Our server was very well aware that it was our friend's birthday dinner celebration, & yet still, she did not bring her any kind of dessert or special lil fingy?? For such a highly-esteemed establishment with the higher price points they have, i was v surprised & disappointed to find them having missed the mark on customer service, let alone leave us with any kind of "wow" impression as their reputation merits... It is a nice and elegant restaurant inside The Driskill hotel. You have to go past the bar which was jam packed yesterday. We had reservations which I highly recommend. Emily our server was super nice and knowledgeable and helped me with all my gluten related questions. I decided to go with the breast of duck and my husband with the fillet. The duck was absolutely delicious. It comes with a mushroom risotto and candied blood orange which makes a perfect bite with the duck. The citrusy of the blood orange really elevate the duck which had a perfect and black sear, but kept the moisture inside. The risotto was very creamy and the mushroom sauce provided that earthy combination. My husband really liked his fillet although it was a bit overcooked for his taste. He mentioned the latkes were good, but on the spicier side. For dessert we had the caramel flan which was the only gluten free option on the menu besides the sorbet. The flan was perfectly cooked and it had the perfect creamy texture. However, it lacked bit more of flavor. I wish it had more vanilla and was a tiny bit more sweet and the pears were more tender. read more

We just finished a delightful dinner experience at this newly reopened restaurant. We went to the pre-theater prix fixe menu and it was truly amazing. My wife and I are wine and food enthusiasts and frequently attend fine dinners with our Chaine des Rotisseurs fellow members around the planet. Tonight's dinner was Chaine worthy. We started with classic Oysters Rockefeller and Steak Tartar with bone marrow aioli and quail egg accompanied with a roasted Jalapeno. Both were plated beautifully with classic presentation. For entree's , my wife had the Tournedos Rossini with foie gras over a duck fat Latke in a truffle sauce. Prepared and presented to perfection. I had what turned out to be the house special which was a duck breast prepared with balsamic blood orange and mushroom risotto. AMAZING! The desert was a gold dark chocolate mousse cake, gianduja feuilletine base, with a mint gelato. So rich and it perfectly complimented the meal. Even the coffee was amazing. It was a local roasted coffee but had the taste and strength of a Turkish coffee. We ordered some Sambuca to compliment the richness with a bit of sweetness to offset the natural bitterness of the freshly roasted beans The atmosphere was what you would expect from a restaurant of this quality. See the pictures of the restaurant to get a sense of the atmosphere. Beyond the food, what made the dinner special was Emily, our server. She had the perfect demeanor and professionalism you would expect from a restaurant as special as this one. She knew the menu preparations and the wine list parings and made some wonderful recommendations that were on point. We asked to speak to the chef who was unavailable but we met with sous chef Cliff Benavides who gave us a blow by blow education of the food sourcing and meal presentation. He was passionate about his production and full of pride and gracious when we shared our appreciation for his efforts. He gave great praise to executive chef Mark Dayanandan for his ingenuity and also for allowing him to express his artful creations. All in all, I give this restaurant 5 stars. I should mention that we had dinner the night before at another "fine restaurant" in Austin which was very good but not near as special as this restaurant. I would go back to both but my first choice would be this restaurant which I will return to every time I visit Austin. My compliments to the chefs, servers and GM for reintroducing this restaurant in its glorious return. The only recommendation I would make is to change the music to something more consistent with the food quality and ambiance. I would suggest the Rat Pack or something similar. I realize we are in Texas and a Texas theme would be nice considering the history of the hotel but country music or 70's rock just are not a good match for the offering they honor us with as guests. Only 1 option (salmon) for those allergic to shellfish and don't want beef. 8oz filet ($60) was a little dry and overcooked. Requested medium rare. Blue-cheese spinach was too rich to eat. Scallops were good. Shrimp over seasoned and risotto was very rich. Had a large group (20) at three tables. It took 2 hours to get entrees and restaurant was less than 50% occupied. Good meal. Over-priced for food/service quality. I'd come back as a party of less than 6. Bar service was painfully slow both at the bar itself and in the grille. Understaffed for the crowd and it's a Tuesday. Only 3 occupied tables in the restaurant. It took 20 minutes to find out they were out of port. And they don't have Sambuca. read more

A Memory for a Lifetime! We strolled into the Driskill looking for a recommended Old Fashioned (The TX Revolver it was great) and found The Driskill Grill. It wasn't crowded so we walked in and met our SUPER server Shawn. He was warm and welcoming. He recommended a wonderful Bluebonnet cocktail that smelled and tasted like being immersed in a flower. For the meal we enjoyed the Halibut Cerviche which was delicate and sweet. That was followed by the Steak Tartare paired with crostini, a bone marrow aioli, roasted jalapeños, and a quail egg. Classic dish that just a flavor explosion with each bite. For our main courses we enjoyed the Tournedos Rossini a 6 ounce filet mignon accented with sautéed spinach, potato rösti, and a fantastic truffle sauce, and a marvelous Braised Short Rib completed the meal. It's been awhile since I've been here and it seems I've forgotten to drop a review. I was excited to try this place because of the history, but the food was not what I was expecting. I definitely can't remember what the name of each dish we ordered is called but I didn't particularly like it because it was a mixture of savory and sweet in an entree dish. I thought that was a strange mixture and most of the food that night was like this. I also think for that night there was special menu. Overall, this place is very classy and upscale. It's expensive so it's more on a high end budget. However, the restaurant interior is pretty nice and when you walk into the building, it is very classic and nice. The hostess with the nicely styled blonde hair was kind enough to find room for me and the wife as we were getting close 8pm. This place is decked out in a spectacular craftsman wood finish. Enough of the architecture down to the food and drink! Our server was Shawn a classy guy w/Cali hospitality. He had great recommendations for food. We had the lobster bisque, crab cakes, bacon wrapped dates and pan seared cod. My wife loves Mezcal so he recommend Samantha's Ghost and I had a nice strong Cadillac Margarita. Shawn gave us great recommendations for places during our stay in Austin and we hit quite a few. Great service with a warm friendly staff. I was staying at the hotel for my birthday and wanted to grab dinner before we went to a show that night. It was right before 6 pm and I was surprised that the dining room was totally empty considering how crowded the bar area was that night. I wasn't surprised that they were able to seat us without a reservation, but we were on a really tight time crunch and I was rather concerned that a fancy restaurant might have a hard time serving us in the 30 minutes that we had. I explained our dilemma to the waiter and he did a great job at pointing out menu items that would be fast for the kitchen to make. We not only received our food very quickly, but they still did a great job cooking the scallops spot on and plating my husband's swordfish beautifully. It was quite expensive, as you'd expect from an upscale place, but it was totally worth it for the stellar service and delicious food. read more

I stayed at the Driskill hotel to celebrate my birthday. So the Driskill Grill made it easy for me to decide where to celebrate my birthday dinner (July 4th)!!! The ambiance was quiet and very grown up. I would not recommend the Driskill Grill for dinner unless you are kid free. The grill is around the corner from the bar area. There were a plethora of food options for steak and seafood lovers. The appropriate dress code would be business casual or snappy casual. You could even where a dress shirt and tie if you'd like. Most ladies were wearing dresses and or dressy shirts with slacks. The grill is available to guests of the hotel and people who are not staying at the hotel. You have to valet if you chose to park in the hotel parking. I will be back soon when I come back to Austin. read more

It shouldn't be that expensive. Also the Mac and cheese has a hint of orange peel and I didn't like that. They ran out of one if there cocktails but they took a long enough time to tell us. Also when we got our bill we didn't understand it. It had gratuity added in as well as a service fee. Giving our waitress over a 140 dollar tip. We ask her what that is and she said she didn't know how that happened and it has never happened before. Phenomenal food, service, and drinks. I only wish I could eat here every day. But, that would be impossible considering I live in Kentucky... and probably couldn't afford it anyway. As a food allergy sufferer, I tend to avoid going out to eat as much as possible. When I do venture out, it's usually with much reservation, hesitation, and anxiety. Let's just say I've gotten used to eating plain hamburgers with no bun. This was not the case at Driskill! THANKFULLY. Words cannot express my gratitude for the delicious and completely allergen free meal I enjoyed while dining here one Friday night. Every single bite was delicious. I had the lamb and it was incredibly tender and flavorful, with just the right amount of fat. They even brought out special bread for me that was dairy and soy free and substituted some other side items for me as well. It has been a long time since I was able to enjoy a meal of this caliber, worry-free. The service was also what made the experience so special. I was dining with my 6 month old son, who fell asleep during dinner. The amazing staff at the Driskill made my son a little make-shift bed from chairs and blankets, so that he could sleep peacefully while we enjoyed our dinner. They even suggested it! I didn't ask...they are just that awesome. I will always make a point to eat here when I'm in Austin. Whether on a romantic date or catching up with old friends, the atmosphere is very classy and up scale. But if you are looking for something a little more lively, just pop outside to the bar area. They have live music and a more chatty atmosphere. This was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had, so I would say make this a must stop for Austin! read more

There's a guy at the Driskill Grill bar that I'd swear has been here since the invention of silverware and the whiskey tumbler, give or take. He always seems mildly distracted (and to be fair, if my job involved some sort of real life theater-in-the-round I might be too), and on occasion I've had to work to get his attention, and come to think of it, he's not particularly gregarious, but he's a staple all the same, and perfunctory with his pours. Most of my time (as is becoming apparent as I write this) has been spent in the vicinity of the bar, and those sidled up next to you are often ripe for some engaging conversation. I've actually made friends here, and that's gotta be worth something. But that my lingering memories of the Driskill Bar and it's attached lounge are of late nights and new years, friends and the ringing hollows of an elegantly pounded piano, ambient shadows and radiant smiles, and it's hard not to like this place. As I know I'll be back around, and when I do, I know it'll be worth the time. read more

I came here a few years ago and still remember how good the food tasted. We had an early dinner and made the reservations the day of. It was a spur of the moment decision to eat here and they accommodated us very well considering it was fourth of July weekend. This place was just down the street from our hotel in downtown Austin and was a quick drive. We parked on the street, which had plenty of space. As I entered the hotel, I felt totally underdressed. This place was definitely fine dining status. (Obviously I didn't know that considering we made reservations from our hotel just the day of from a restaurant guide.) Any way, the restaurant is small but gorgeously decorated. It was an anniversary I celebrated with an old flame, and the hostess gave us a nice intimate table in the corner. For the first course I had the pistachio scallops. I can honestly say that, that was the best scallop that I have ever eaten ever, just juicy, tasty and simply delicious. (As you can tell, the portions are small there.) For the second course I had the lobster which was magically delicious. And finally for dessert, I had the apple tart. The waitress was so nice that she had the cooks in the back write "Happy Anniversary" on the plate for me. Lastly I want to say that the service is remarkable. Attentive and nice enough to cater to any need as you can tell. If you're willing to spend a lot of money for some well made food, you should drop by here! read more
