Amazing lunch special $10.95 for an appetizer and entree! I got the grilled chicken satay which was very savory and delicious with the peanut sauce, and for the first time tried a spicy Pad See Ew - I was offered a 0-5 spice level and chose 1: just a hint of spice, making it slightly different from the usual sweet and savory Pad See Ew.

Saw the Thai style appetizers so had high hopes. Definitely not Thai at all. Papaya salad - lacking spices/peppers for the Thai flavor, no citris flavor, did not pound the green papayas at all. Kind of just tastes like they just mixed some green papaya, carrots, peanuts and green beans in a sauce. Pad Thai - tastes like plain stir fry noodles, bland. Chicken was cooked at least. Scallion pancake - more a soft chewy consistency in the middle which was interesting. With a side of a sweet teriyaki sauce.

Delivery Order - Ordering from here for the 1st time and not a great experience. Food was hot and delivery was quick but that's the only high point. For ~$15 each for the Basil Fried Rice and Pad Thai Noodles, I was expecting more. Quantity and Quality was just okay and definitely could have been better for the price. Fried Rice was a little try and not much flavor. Pad Thai had something like crystals (I am assuming either Brown Sugar or something that was a part of recipe that didn't dissolve well) which kept bothering me while eating. They offer $8 worth of Spring Rolls for orders over $30 but it was just 2 pieces. $8 for 2 spring rolls is too steep. Sweet Roti at $7 was a joke. You buy a can of condensed milk and some ready-made Roti from any Indian Store and get twice as much done at home for the same price and taste. Wouldn't recommend, at least for Delivery.

3.5 Stars. We ordered delivery via door dash at work. The food was delivered well packaged, fresh and hot. You get a filling portion, but it's pretty expensive for the minimal chicken you get. Normally I like to get the option of spice level, but my dish came with hot sauce packets, so I made it work. Overall we'll definitely keep red basil on our rotation when ordering.

I recently dined at Red Basil in Rutherford, NJ, and I must say they have good service compared to most Asian restaurants around here. The staff is friendly and always greets you with a smile as they serve and greet guests. We came on a quiet Sunday afternoon, and we were the only customers in the restaurant. However, I noticed that Red Basil is filled with customers during lunchtime on regular weekdays. For my meal, I chose one of their lunch specials. I started with the Grilled Chicken Satay as my appetizer and selected the Spicy Noodle with Chicken as my entrée. While I wouldn't say the satay peanut sauce was the absolute best I've ever had, I must give them credit for the generous portion of chicken on the skewers. They certainly don't skimp on the chicken when it comes to their satay. Having grown up and spent most of my life in Malaysia, I used to visit Thailand for vacations a few times every year. Trying their Spicy Noodles with Chicken definitely felt like a taste of the noodles I had from one of the aunties selling fried Thai noodles on the street. I usually had to add soy sauce whenever I ordered fried noodles from most Asian restaurants around NJ, but it was exceptional at this one. The spice and salt were on point--not too much, just perfect. I would definitely return for the lunch specials with the same entrée, but I will try a different appetizer.

I was in the Rutherford area and had a taste for Thai. I did a quick web search and came across Red Basil. I decided to give them a try. The virtual menu says you can get a free dish when you order online so I decided to go that route. I ordered shrimp pad Thai, calamari and a can of sprite. It came up to $31.80. I didn't see option for a free dish but there were some coupons like free ice cream if you spend $20 or free spring roll if you spend $30. I didn't use those coupons. When I went to pick up the food the restaurant was clean and there was a sign to ring bell to pick up food. The server came as soon as I rang the bell, confirmed my order and gave it to me. The food was packaged well, utensils provided and a straw for my beverage. The calamari was a disappointment. There was so much breading it looked like a chicken nugget and not fried calamari. Biting in to it the calamari was rubbery and the only thing helping the flavor was the dipping sauce. I will say the side of sweet chili sauce it came with was pretty good. The shrimp pad Thai was delicious. The right amount of egg, peanuts, carrots, bean sprouts and rice noodle. They make you pay an extra $2 if you select shrimp and for the large bowl of pad Thai there were only six pieces of shrimp in my entire dish. Given the medium size of the shrimp I felt more pieces should have been added. I would return but I would order a different appetizer and I would double up on the protein. I think Red Basil has consistently excellent food. I have never had a bad meal there. Sometimes the service is a little lax but I am more than willing to deal with it for the food. read more

I have been going here since it opened from its original owner, years ago. It was gorgeous, and inviting, with outstanding Thai food. We went often. Then it changed hands, and, well, things aren't as they used to be. I believe this is the third change over time. My husband and I went for dinner, and he ordered the duck, a true fave of his. I am a seafood nut, with as much heat as you can provide, please. The food was pleasing, but we were so turned off by the atmosphere, torn seats, old paint, and sticky table tops, and general untidiness, that we couldn't wait to get out! I was worried that the kitchen matched the dining area, and that we would get terribly ill. Fortunately that was not the case, but I was depressed to say the least. It needs serious updating! Clean it up and brighten it up, and it will make a big difference. The service was unimpressive as well. We are crazy patient people, but we were losing it by the end, and just needed to get out by the time we got our entrees. read more

Probably the worst Thai food I've ever had. The appetizers were so horrible I couldn't eat a bite. The pad thai actually was on par but nothing special at all. We were two people on a week night and there were only 2 other couples the service was HORRIFIC, it took almost 1.5 hours for the meal, no one came and checked on us. I would never go back nor would I recommend this location to anyone. read more

I had a love / like relationship here before due to service and food, but now they've really become consistently good. We like red curry noodles, the green curry, the Thai iced tea is made with a perfect balance for my taste, not too sweet and creamy enough. The owner is very kind and it's a hard working family business. I'm glad they are so close by. The young guy who I think is the chef is very very sweet and accommodating. Service goes a long way and that is one of the reasons we had avoided it. But the service has been very hospitable as of late and the food tasty! Only thing is the green curry is supposed to have eggplant and there is barely any usually. Last time we only got two pieces in the whole dish. read more

I love this place. I have been here numerous times with my girlfriend and always get a good meal. Our favorite appetizer is the fried calamari. For the main course, we love the pork pad thai and the pad string beans with chicken. For dessert, you have to get the fried bananas with coconut ice cream. read more

First time at Red Basil. The Tom Yum soup was pretty good and the eggplant wok was awesome. However, the beef salad was horrible. The dressing wasn't bad, but the beef tasted a little off. My suspicions were confirmed by my upset stomach post-dinner. I don't think I'll be returning.. read more

Consistently great! Week after week the food is always presented well, tastes better than any Thai in NYC, (and it is authentic). Staff are pleasant yet professional. Decor is hip. BYO, Rutherford is a dry town. Beautiful, delicious Thai food, very reasonably priced, great restaurant! read more

We came in here after a nearby concert and the waitress seemed more interested in closing exactly on time than in providing a pleasant dining experience. While we ate our appetizer, the heavy smell of disinfectant wafted out from the rear of the restaurant. The food was good but we felt hurried along. When our waitress brought the check, she seemed annoyed that we even looked at it before we paid it. If the lighting had been a little better, we could have read both the check and the menu a little faster. Although the food was good, we are from NYC where no restaurant would hurry diners along in this manner. We will try Red Basil in Astoria, but not go back to this one. read more

COCKROACH, in my food! Aargh! I have lived in Rutherford for going on ten years now, and love Thai food...especially Vegetarian Mock Duck Red Curry. I could eat it every day. I have been ordering from Red Basil for years. I ordered from them a few months ago, and got soo sick, I literally was projectile vomiting for the whole night. I chalked it up to the flu. However, I ordered my favorite dish a few days ago, and found a dead cock roach in my curry....aargh! There has to be some serious cleanliness issues going on in that kitchen...never again! Maybe I should call the health department for a random inspection. It's really too bad because being a vegetarian makes it hard enough to find good food. I guess it's time to find a new favorite restaurant! read more

OK. My first Thai food experience.I have decided I dont like Thai food.But also restaurant too dark to read menu or see food properly.Also temp in restaurant felt like AN OVEN (against right wall) Asked server to help with temp but did no good.She barely spoke English and didnt seem to understand simple questions. The food was great ... my husband had the green curry .... I had the duck panang curry ... food got to us within 50 minutes (which is ok), however I have an 18 month old baby and I specifically asked them not to ring the doorbell when they get to me (provided two phone numbers) .... they did it twice and the delivery guy (who didn't speak no English) didn't understand why I was so mad!! Anyway I hope I didn't overreacting it.... I would have given them a 4 star if this incident didn't happened read more

Glad to have a Thai takeout in town but could be better... I have ordered some super bland dishes here that shouldn't be... Chicken Pad Thai for example was flavorless, but the Drunken Noodle had some spice and saltiness. Seems pretty inauthentic as far as Thai goes but I will return because there is no other Thai alternative in town. read more

started out with started basil combo platter it had a few of the more popular appetizers can with 4 sauces and itwas a nice mix of the more popular items Mango salmon awesome sirloin steak with some nice spicy curry .....assorted duck in a whole array of sauces I had the Kung ob woon sen it was served in a clay pot most enjoyable the service was laid back but quick to open our wine read more

We eat Thai food all the time and decided to try this place for the first time. We did not enjoy any of the food, the fried rice and chicken tasted old. The place was cold and the people that worked there seemed like they were annoyed that we were there. We will not be going back and would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

This is the best Thai food I've ever had. I usually get the yummy glass noodles since they are just too good to pass up! It's a tiny place inside but the staff is nice and the food usually comes out really quick. I've been there too many times to count for dine in and take out and I'm yet to get a bad meal. read more

I have never written a review about any place but this place really ticked me off with their service. Let me just Say NEVER CALL and ORDER HERE. Now I have only been here once before. I called to make an order; a lady who spoke good English picked up and handed the phone to a guy who could barely speak English. I told him what I wanted and I ask him to repeat so I know he got he says "yes Yes" and hangs up. So I go there as soon as I can since I was on my lunch break, so when I get there to pick it up, everything that I got was wrong. They wasted half an hour and they still get it wrong two more times while I am there. So decided to leave and the owner runs towards me and tells me sorry and I will give you free food. Well so I wait another half hour and she gives me Thai iced tea for free and I ended up paying for rest. She says I meant free iced tea. I don't mind paying; just give me what I ordered. I don't understand why they are in business if they can't speak English. Be careful when you decide to make an order here. I would never wish this kind of experience on anyone. read more

We used to go here a lot and recommended to my friends even after I moved. We decided to get some nice lunch since we missed the food here. I don't mind them increasing lunch special prices but the service has gotten worse. They are notorious for slow and bad service despite tasty food. When I asked waitress to take order after 5 minutes of waiting, she told us to wait since she's busy. Well, after 15 minutes of waiting she still didn't take our order and she didn't give us water. There were only 4 people at the restaurant. Frustrated, we decided to walk out the door and never come go back for awhile. read more

Overall, it's a solid, classic breakfast spot right in the heart of downtown Rutherford.

This resturant is family owned and is amazing! Their food is really Thai authentic. Everything comes out fresh and tasty. They always ask you what level spice you are comfortable with so they can cook it according to your taste. This is our second time back and this place tops all the Thai restaurants we have been to. Highly recommend! Also in case you were wondering, I really recommend the Noodle Curry soup! Portion size is amazing and the flavor is phenomenal. If it's a winter day and cold outside this noodle soup will definitely do the job of getting you warm! read more

I had dinner here with my cousin for her birthday. Overall, I had a good experience but not enough to give it 5 stars I had spring rolls with pineapple fried rice. I would rate that as a 7/10. I felt like it lacked flavor. If it was seasoned a little more- it could have easily been a 10/10. The drinks were good- I've had better. The servers were nice and friendly. The Food is awesome here no doubt but sometimes I feel that staff showing an attitude and it seems very unprofessional.
