A great place to get excellent asian food in the Florence area Red Bowl Asian Bistro is tucked into a small shopping center right off David H. McLeod Boulevard in Florence, SC. It is just east of the intersection of I-20 and I-95. It is great for visitors needing a break without adding extra miles to the drive. There is limited parking out front but we were hungry for some asian food one evening and decided to try it. I am glad that we did. Inside it is very pretty. As you enter (through the side of the space, you are looking at a large picture of Hong Kong against the back wall with black ceilings and half walls but good lighting to give it a very elegant feeling. The light wood and open space give it a very relaxed feel. There is a small bar to your left. The sushi bar to the right and the hostess and seating directly in front. The staff was absolutely wonderful. They were friendly and efficient. We placed our order at the counter, and everything was ready in under ten minutes, despite a steady stream of both dine-in and to-go folks. I ordered the Sweet and sour chicken Bento box and and my partner ordered Steak Teriyaki. The boxes include rice, salad or soup, sushi and your meat (chicken or steak). The portions are massive. I could not finish mine and each would easily have made 2 or three meals. The food itself was delicious and the prices were very reasonable given the quality and the generous portions of food that you get. With the intense heat & humidity this summer, I have been selective when I eat out for lunch. Ducked into Red Bowl a little after 2 PM today and instead of going with the usual favorites, I selected the Steamed chicken & fresh vegetables. Oh boy, was it scrumptious. Absolutely fresh vegetables; carrots, baby corn, mushrooms, zucchini, and an assortment of Chinese vegetables. So light, and extremely healthy. Side note: The other dining room had plenty of room to move our group to when it was obvious that the table was not appropriate. Food is not great. Our To Go order was missing the rice. I worked in the service industry in this area for years and I never would have imagined that a restaurant manager would speak to a patron the way they spoke to my husband tonight. We drove into town to visit a relative in the hospital and ordered $140 worth of food to take home to everyone. They assured my husband everything was in the bag (stapled closed) but upon arriving home he saw that his entire meal (2 sushi rolls) was missing. So he left to go pick up his food and called them on the way there so that they would not have to rush to prepare it. The hostess was unable to find his receipt and so my husband provided the receipt himself, the manager got on the phone and told my husband that he was not, in fact, missing anything from his order. My husband insisted he was, and the manager actually said "I don't believe you" and implied my husband was attempting to get free food, like we would spend $140 on a family meal and then go through the trouble of driving home, calling the restaurant and arguing with the manager while driving BACK to the restaurant, before having to drive all the way back home in Florence dinner traffic just to get two free sushi rolls? On top of how absolutely offensive the exchange already was, the manager actually told my husband to pack up all the rest of the food and bring it back to the restaurant so he could check himself. My husband said no, his family is eating, he isn't packing up their meals and bringing them back cold food. Cherry on top is when they gave my husband his missing food, they only gave him half the order. He wasn't missing much, my food was not what I was expecting from a Red Bowl and two other orders we received on our first attempt at dinner with the family were very incorrect. If you told me that the manager had never worked in service until today, or even experienced service, I would believe you. I've been here twice now with my husband for lunch and I have to agree with the other reviews. The sushi does need work. I ordered the sushi combo which was about 7 dollars. It came with a salad with ginger dressing (but you can also have soup instead), an order of spicy tuna and an order of crunchy rolls. The spicy tuna was really bland and room temperature which to me says either it wasn't fresh or it was over-handled. The crunchy roll was good but it's hard to mess up imitation crab meat. The sushi didn't have too much rice though which to me is good because I tend to associate overly-riced sushi with a chef who doesn't know how to roll sushi. Still, it needs improvement. My husband ordered a lunch special of Thai Cashew Chicken with fried rice and an egg roll. His food was really good but if you have a food allergy you might want to be careful. His fried rice had a shrimp tail in it but there isn't supposed to be shrimp in the fried rice. The second time we went he ordered the Pad Thai lunch special. It was mostly noodle but the shrimp were big and tasty. I ordered the Spicy Thai Basil Chicken. It wasn't spicy at all but it wasn't bland either. I would order that again. We also had the Thai Herbal Calamari which was good albeit a bit on the extra oily side. Their egg rolls and spring rolls are tasty.
