I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much from a Thai restaurant in Hartsville but I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food tasted. I ordered the Spring Rolls which were good but nothing that blew me away. The Green Curry, on the other hand, was absolutely delicious. Nice spice level (I asked for extra spicy) and fabulous taste. The place is nice but not overly fancy. I did come here a second time and waited in my car until they opened. I tried opening the door at opening time but it was locked. This is a cute little family-run restaurant. The people are very polite, and the service is very good. We both ended up getting the orange chicken and it was so good! They do a nice job with plate presentation and the flavors were very good. My only suggestion would be maybe to include a few more pieces of broccoli. The portions are good sized; we ended up taking about half of our food home. We had been afraid to try this place before because my husband has an onion allergy, but we learned that each dish is made to order, and the owner will gladly accommodate your allergies unless it's something in the sauce of one of the dishes. After driving an hour for what I believed to be good Thai food -- I stood by the "Please wait to be seated" sign for nearly 15 minutes as the server kept passing by looking at me without one simple acknowledgment of even "How are you? Or "I will be with you in a moment". I decided to take a seat myself without any assistance. The waitress finally came over in an unfriendly manner to take my order. Visiting Coker University and decided to stop in for lunch. The lady, whom I've been told, is the owner greeted my group and immediately seated us. She wasn't very attentive to say the least, it was within 45 min of closing for lunch, I believe they reopen 2hrs later for dinner. I chose the green curry bc of the online reviews, it was bland to me. The Koong Ob Mor Din was yummy. The beef pho was nice as well. Ambiance: It was just my party in the restaurant and we had to search for the owner/waitress on numerous occasions for drink refills, condiments etc. I heard, what appeared to be, soap opera drama sooo maybe it soap time :/ Restaurant was clean and the gentleman that helped bring our dishes to the table was very pleasant. Next time I'm in town, I'll probably not visit bc of having to feel like I'm hunting for service. read more

Oh my! What a wonderful dining experience! It did take time to get our made to order meal served, but in my opinion that is part of the experience and I wasn't in a hurry. This is a small restaurant; I imagine there's only one person preparing each meal in the kitchen. The food was fresh and very tasty! I ordered a red curry with shrimp. The heat was just right! My friend ordered Chicken Pad Thai, and it was good. Now, I want to tell you-- the fried dumpling appetizer was out of this world! There are 4 savory, crunchy, yummy filled, not to be missed dumplings. It was hard to share.... And the fried banana with ice cream, chocolate syrup, honey and peanuts was a heavenly ending to the meal! And big enough to share between 2 without giving a side eye to your friend. I'm here now, for the third time in a year and I am usually always really happy and excited about the food, the service and the general experience I have - but today has been miserable. The prices have gone up by 1 to 2 dollars and there is less food? Pick one please! There is a waitress working her ass off with 7 tables - one table has 8 people! And the owner (I think it's the owner) is "helping" by being rude to us and delivering a late dish every once in a while. It's insane, the poor girl is running around trying her best. My Thai tea was not good - the bubbles were hard and crunchy when they should be soft and fluffy. The food took over 45 minutes and then the owner(?) had a bad attitude about us saying that one of the orders was wrong. We tried to cancel the rest of the order because we were tired of waiting and were told it was too late because it was already coming. Even though we already had our meals and wanted to leave because we were expecting the soup before the meals - not after. The three of us ate the food which wasn't bad but definitely nothing as good as it has been previously and we are all still hungry. The fried rice was not hot at all, just kind of warm, the pad Thai was pretty good and the soup doesn't have much flavor. All in all, I'm pretty bummed about having to pay for such a bad experience when the check comes. I'm def v disappointed today. Especially since we drove 40 minutes to get here. Womp Womp. Our check is coming now so we can finally leave this experience behind us. Oh wait! The check just came and we are now being charged for the Thai tea that I had one sip of - realized was awful - and sent back! And I had to argue to get it taken off of the bill. Seriously?! And I even had a student ID because if you show your ID you get 10% off and now they tell me you can only use the discount on part of the meal which hasn't been the case in the past. I was surprised to find great Thai food in this small town! I was in the area for a college dance festival and this restaurant was right down the street. Some one should've warned them about the festival because many of us wanted Thai food on a Saturday night resulting in not enough seating and only 2 waitresses running food, drinks, and checks to all of the tables. I felt bad they were so busy but they were doing great considering the unusual busyness! I tried a Thai beer I'd never had that was really delicious - it was called Chang I believe. I ordered Pho for dinner and after a long wait (understandably) a HUGE bowl of Pho arrived. I mean huge. Never had such a large bowl, I could not begin to finish it. It was steaming hot and delicious, though I prefer some of the Pho I have had with more sprouts, onions, and basil mixed in. Great place with good wait staff. They have a small wine list and offer a couple of domestic bottled beers as well as two Thai beers and Sapporo. Bow Thai is a great Hartsville spot. Go for lunch for cheaper prices, more manageable portions, and smaller crowds. I always do lunch and never have to wait for a table or too long for my food. My go-to is the Yellow Curry with chicken--so much so that I'm all of my visits, I don't think I've ever tried another dish! The chicken and vegetables are always cooked really well, and I love the creamy-with-a-kick curry. That plus the steamed white rice is the perfect portion for a filling-but-manageable meal. For its location in rural South Carolina, I do believe this Thai restaurant is as good as it gets (as denoted by the 5 stars, following Yelp's rating guidelines). If BowThai restaurant were in New York City, it probably would have been a solid 3 stars, and I mean this as a sincere compliment to the restaurant. The volcano duck is a very generous serving of tender and succulent duck meat with a perfectly crispy skin, bathed in a very flavorful sauce. Indeed, the serving size was more than generous; I could not finish it because even a glutton like me got too full. Among the 4 appetizers I have tried here, namely the spring rolls, the chicken and shrimp dumplings (both steamed ones and fried ones), and the chicken satay, I enjoyed the fried dumplings the most. The peanut sauce served with the chicken satay has a nice flavor too (that's pretty standard for satay, though). If I were ever to find myself in the area, or even just passing through, I would not think twice about stopping by for a meal at BowThai. read more

This restaurant is a very nice place to eat for anyone passing through or living in Hartsville. My dad came down to visit me at college and go to Renofest this past weekend, and when he mentioned he would like to get some lunch before going, I knew exactly where to take him. I even paid for the entire meal. The waitresses are very nice and welcoming, and the environment is very open and inviting. The food all sounded so good it was hard for us to choose what to eat. We finally decided we were going to try the Chicken Satay (appetizer), Pineapple Rice, and the Drunken Noodle. Every bit of it was amazing! My dad and I have never tried Thai food, but this definitly makes me want to eat at Bow Thai Kitchen more often. I recommend this place to everyone (even you reading this review.) =) read more

Bow Thai is good-anywhere-good, not just small-town good. Although it's not cheap, the portions are solid and the food is quality. It's on our regular rotation down here and definitely worth a stop if you like Thai. A few quick tips... - Heat level is 1-5, and 5 is "Thai hot" in that you'll sweat & regret in the morning - The tom yum and tom kha are both very good versions of the standard Thai offerings - You can sub steamed veg for rice. Good call if you're trying not to carb-load on the road - They close at 9, and it gets very quiet in here after 8. Don't be alarmed... I would give this place a hundred stars if I could. Two years ago, I moved to Hartsville from China. It was a huge change moving from a big city to the countryside. Everything looks so...rural so I wasn't expecting anything good from this itty bitty town. Then I found this place and I thought, well, I've gotta try. Turned out the food was amazing! I've tried basically everything and my favorites are chicken satay, steamed dumplings, house special noodles​, Bow Thai​ fried rice, and of course the volcano duck. This place made me feel like home and they once made porridge for me when I was sick. I still think of this place now that I'm in California. This place used to have excellent Thai cuisine. Now it is horrible. The service is very slow, we had to wait twenty minutes and ask twice to get our drinks refilled. The portions were much smaller than they used to be. The food was very bland. I have never had such bland Thai food. It took twenty-five minutes to get our check. Their selection is extensive, the waitstaff is always very friendly, they are understanding of customers with Celiac disease and can make many of their items gluten free upon request, and the food is as good of Thai food as I've had in any of the cities that I've lived in. After the experience today- NEVER again. My husband and I walked in when there was only one other table occupied and placed our order. Other people came in 10-15 min after us and got their food. Fast forward nearly 40 minutes and we had to flag down the waiter to get her attention and still no update on our food. She didn't check on us even once before we flagged her down. The place was half empty. My husband and I left and no one seemed to care that we left either, since the staff saw us walking out. Never in my life have I ever had such horrible, nonexistent service. Your money is better spent elsewhere. I'll be giving mine to people who treat their guests better. read more

I was excited to try this place when I learned I had Thai food not far from me. Tonight I finally got the chance. I had read about the volcano duck and how delicious and crispy it was. So I ordered that. I also wanted to see what their curry was like. Living in NY I grew to love curry dishes. I ordered chicken with red curry tonight as well too. For appetizers I ordered steamed dumplings and crab delight. I wanted Chicken Satay too but they were out of that they said. I ordered it all to go. I think this was an issue for the duck because when I got it, it was all in one contained and the duck was submerged in the sauce and soggy and not even close to crispy when I got it home. They should rethink the packaging of this for to go orders and keep the duck separate from the veggies and sauce. That would at least give the duck a chance to stay crispy until you get to eat it. That aside the volcano duck had a great flavor. The curry also had great flavor though it was very thin and water which tells me they are skimping on the coconut milk to save money. Mistake. Curry should not be as thin as water. The appetizer were a huge disappointment. For the price I paid for them: 4.99 for steamed dumplings, I was expecting more than 4. The 4 dumplings were also rather small. The ginger sauce was good flavor though. The crab delight was very disappointing. You only get 4 and the menu states that but they are folded like stars with 4 points and the only crab meat is in the very middle... the leg of each star is nothing more than fried wonton skin with no crab in it. They were also fried too long and were too hard. The flavor of these were bland. The only thing that added any flavor was the stereotypical sweet and sour sauce they serve with it. That too was very watery. For the prices this place charges they should stop skimping on the ingredients and thicken the sauces as they should be. They should also be able to add more filling to the crab delight. All that aside, I will eat here again. The food does have good flavor. I just will avoid the dumplings and the crab delight appetizer. Its got the market cornered on Thai food down here. read more
