Oh my, where have your been for all of the years I have been coming here. This place is amazing, small, away from the tourist part of town and they only accept cash. You would be wise to can ahead and make a reservation. We got there shortly after 5 and it was completely (9-10 tables?) full before we finished. The fixed menu (see photo) is an incredible value and let's you sample four of their dishes. You have two choices for the main, I went with the mole poblano(over chicken) my friend had the mole oxaca which was very different. Mine was a little spicy, more of a traditional take on mole. Hers was almost sweet, with a number of flavors melding together exceedingly well. I've never had peanut soup before and it's amazing I've lived this long. Creamy, savory.. This is followed by one of their specialties that I have a hard time finding, Chiles En Nogada. Reported to have been created by the nuns at the Santa Monica convent, this is a complex and wonder concoction of sweet and savory ingredients served cold with a cream sauce that has pomegranate in the cream sauce that is covering the poblano chili. It's a very mild, very wonderful dish. I went with the Polo mole poblano for my main. It was a little bit spicy but not very much. A fairly traditional mole sauce served over chicken with rice and beans and for my last course I had the flan which was very well done. In my opinion, this fixed price meal comes with a shot of tequila which I substituted for lemonade and a glass of red or white wine I had the white wine to go with my chicken and it was all perfectly orchestrated. It came out quickly. It didn't feel like it was too much food and I appreciated every bite. This is one of those places you hate to leave a glowing review about because it may be harder to get into the next time you're in town. But this is oh so good. It's worth it. Fortunately it's far enough off the beaten trail that most people will be too timid to go out and try it, but it's to your loss if you don't go and try this. read more

We both had the mole poblano...nuanced flavors were memorable with a bit of a spicy finish. Hands down, the best mole ever. Expertly crafted margaritas as well. Arrived early with a 6:30 reservation and were warmly welcomed by the long time manager. Though we were the only diners at that time, the small but lovely and artistic restaurant gradually filled.. it's a bit out of the way and off the beaten path, but the delicious food, friendly staff, and colorful decor are well worth the short trip. Woweeeeee This was our very favorite meal while in Puerto Vallarta. Our waiter has been there for many years & was very attentive with us. The decor has a Bohemian cozy feel with multiple pics adorning the interior walls. You can tell they have many repeat customers We had THE BEST mole sauce ever with our tender chicken! Yuck! We went there last year and it was amazing. This time, the food was horrible; either tasteless or too much salt. The drinks were really bad. The service was lousy. Not once did our waiter come by to ask if we wanted another drink or more water. And then, adding more insult to injury, THEY ADDED ON A 20% TIP!! Never again. I absolutely love this hidden gem in PV. It's a quick Uber ride from the Malacon or Romantic zone. Tucked into a neighborhood you will find the most amazing mole I've ever had. They have several different moles from the regions of Mexico. I believe it's cash only but reasonably priced and the owners are very welcoming. One of our best meals during our 5 weeks in PV. My husband and I had the Frida set menu which supposedly features some of the items served at her wedding feast. Comes with an excellent tequila and large glass of wine. Fabulous value for what we got. Friends ordered a la carte and their bill was only slightly lower than ours and not as much variety or amount. The chiles in nogada and chipotle ribs are very good. Nice atmosphere and service. Just a warning, regular margarita is 120 pesos, but the cadillac marg, to my great surprise, was 300 pesos, about $20 US with tip, which is exorbitant. Otherwise recommend this restaurant. read more

We arrived in Puerto Vallarta about a week ago, and have enjoyed shopping at delightful neighborhood markets in the Zona Romantica area. Our meals have been on the go, without much fanfare all week, so we wanted to have a special dinner as our vacation was coming to an end. Our AirBnB location showed this café as the nearest spot for dinner, so I clicked through and had a read of the menu. It seemed perfect! AND BOY WAS IT EVER. The staff were attentive and wonderful. The host chided me playfully about my lack of Spanish, but was very helpful with our selections off the menu. We ordered two appetizers and two entrees, but the surplus of food was way more than we had anticipated! I had poblanos stuffed with pork, while my partner enjoyed the lengthy list of vegetarian options available, settling on a stuffed pepper with cheese and a nice light sauce. The corn fungus quesadilla is a *must try* that I cannot recommend enough. There was a well-rounded selection of drinks and desserts as well, to accompany the meal. We enjoyed a glass of red and a glass of white wines. Getting to the cafe means going out of your normal way, but please, please don't let this dissuade you from trying it. It's not yet another tourist trap in PV, it's an experience in dining you shouldn't miss out on. read more

The restaurant is charming to look at but the food was bland and over priced. The quesadillas with corn smut were unappealing ( and I love corn smut!). The shrimp dish was over 400 pesos and had four shrimp. The chili. filled with picadillo was plentiful but so bland and watery that the quantity was beside the point. House wine was okay and the pour was good. The flan was good. I really wanted to like this place because it's so close to home but I won't be back. read more

Lovely little hidden gem not too far from the heart of Zona Romantica. I was very well taken care of by Cuco and staff. Dining alone in Mexico can be a little weird sometimes, but I felt very welcomed and well taken care of. Unassuming from the outside, lovely art and colorful inside. I'm always looking for good mole, and this wonderful little restaurant serves the very best mole I've ever had. My partner and I were excited to try this place because of the great reviews, but we were slightly disappointed. The decor was awesome and the atmosphere in general was really lovely. The staff was really welcoming and attentive. Our problem was the food, really. The peanut soup and truffle quesadillas were both pretty flavorless, and not very impressive. For entrees, we orders the Oaxoa mole and the Chili Rellenos. The mole was pretty tasty, but the rellenos were fried and then slathered in broth leaving them SUPER soggy. It was a little strange. Also, each dish had a half of a tomato as a garnish which seemed kind of wasteful as I assume most people don't eat them. The margaritas were good! Overall, this place wasn't bad. But we were definitely expecting more--especially for the price. We didn't go for the signature dish, but maybe we should've--might've been redeeming! We've spent two weeks in PV now, and have decided the best food (and also least expensive) is street food. read more

El Repollo Rojo was recommended by a Mexican coworker of mine as his "favorite restaurant on the planet" and after eating there I now understand why. From the lovely and friendly service, to the stunning décor to the hand-crafted truly outstanding food, this restaurant is an experience you will never forget. I had the Chiles En Nogada, the house specialty, which was one of the most delicious and memorable dishes I have ever tasted in my life. The flavors were so deep and complex and unlike anything I have eaten before. It was so outstanding my family and I came back the next night and I ordered the dish again! My wife is a Vegetarian and was delighted to see they have a separate full vegetarian menu with dozens of outstanding choices. She had the potato and cheese mole tacos the first night and the vegetarian Mexican Plate the 2nd - both were incredible. It's wonderful to see a restaurant take such care in their vegetarian dishes....something the majority of restaurants tend to ignore. We also dined both nights with our 2 year old daughter and they were more than accommodating. Setting us up with a high chair and a delicious kids meal of chicken, rice, beans and fresh vegetables. One last thing - the Margaritas were TOP NOTCH. I love my margaritas and these were hands down the best we had in Puerto Vallarta. Made strong with great tequila and fresh lime juice - no gross sour mix in the building here. read more

Certainly a lil' off the beaten path but well worth it. It's difficult to recommend one specific dish. We came here with a group of six and I tasted everything and everything was absolutely wonderful. My recommendation is to let the incredibly attentive staff help you choose a favorite. Fair warning, you'll take a step (a small one) into a non-touristy area of PV, and this place doesn't take credit cards (though the exchange rate they gave us for our dollars since we didn't have enough pesos wasn't too shabby). The mole here is really good. If you enjoy eating chicken or red meat you're likely to enjoy the food, as long as you get it with the mole. Otherwise the food is pretty lackluster. As I don't eat red meat or chicken, I had the fish in caper sauce. The sauce was watery and the rice on the side had no flavor. My wife had the chile relleno, which was also served in a watery sauce and wasn't appealing. The cocktails are good. We both had margaritas on the rocks, which were tasty. The starter guacamole is also excellent. The waitstaff are excellent. They are very polite and attentive, and don't constantly try to upsell you like at some establishments in Puerto Vallarta. read more

Recommended by a foodie group back home, I decided it was a must see on my Spring Break trip to Puerto Vallarta. The Red Cabbage did not disappoint. Located in a tiny neighborhood off the beaten track, one walks in to immediately find a dozen plus Frida Kahlo pictures staring you down. The waitstaff is friendly and gets the drinks with prompt efficiency that is so appreciated in a country that seems to always run a bit slow. I was so enthralled by the menu I almost ordered two items but alas common sense prevailed. The Chile de Negrinos (if I said that right) was a cold chile stuffed with a mix of meat and veggies and covered in a cream sauce. Beautiful place in the deep cuts of puerto Vallarta. Takes a little effort to find it but it's worth it. We came here 8 years ago and again it didn't disappoint. What a neat experience! It's located a little more for the more beaten path, so it was great to take a stroll back towards the beach and see the neighborhoods. The food at the Red Cabbage was phenomenal. I had the Chiles En Nogada which was unique and amazing. My wife got the "Maria De Carmen's Mexican plate" and thought it was phenomenal. After that we split a scoop of coconut ice cream and relaxed with some coffee. Service was excellent, and the decor was fun. Great place! read more
