Ordered online. Pork pad Thai and spring rolls. Got there and no one was at the counter, or anywhere really. Place was empty and quiet. Finally someone came out from the kitchen after about 5 min and gave me my food. Spring rolls were very good, albeit kind of small. The pad Thai had great flavor, but very little meat. It also had whole peanuts in it rather than crushed, which is what all other pad Thai meals I have had have used. This was odd to me and I wasn't a fan of the whole peanut decision. Some bites would be mainly peanut, but it was still really good pad Thai. If I ever ordered food here again I'd just ask to leave the peanuts out. read more

I'm currently in the habit of ordering delivery on Friday nights in and recently, this was the spot I settled on. After submitting my order through Uber Eats, I occupied my wait time with Netflix and art projects. Before I knew it, I was getting notified that my food was outside. Wrapped up tightly in a plastic bag, I could feel the heat from the food on my hands. For just under twenty bucks (with tip), I got General Tsao with tofu and Crab Rangoon. The first thing I noticed was that the rice was already in the same container as the tofu. Not favorite. I'd rather have the rice kept separate and add it myself when I'm ready to eat. The tofu was a little softer than I like but the broccoli was just fine, and the sauce was relatively on point... Meaning that it's what you would expect. Nothing crazy exciting but certainly recognizable as General Tsao. The Crab Rangoon were not my favorite either. The filling had giant chunks of onions inside and the texture had me squirming a little. Cheap, fast, delivered piping hot, these are the perks of ordering from here. Solid 3 stars. read more

Being the brave soul that I am, I decided to try out this brand new Chinese restaurant. Even braver of me was the fact that I ordered off the authentic Chinese menu. I got the Hot and Numbing Wok Fried with shrimp. Now be forewarned, this dish is not geared toward a typical American palette. I only ate about half of it and had to stop. It was hot, and I mean wicked hot and yes my mouth went numb like I'd gotten shot up with Novocaine. Man, I could have gotten a root canal after eating this and not felt a thing. The restaurant itself is not a fancy place, just a hole in the wall seating maybe 40 people with a basic go up to the counter type service. They give you a buzzer to let you know to come back up to get your food. I'm going to give these people a 5 Star review. It's an interesting restaurant that can accommodate our American tastes as well as Chinese tastes. If you're feeling adventurous and you want to try some authentic Chinese cuisine... I can tell you the food here is interesting, solid and fairly priced. And one last thing. This is the first time I've ever gone into a Chinese restaurant and actually felt like I was in China. There were some Chinese OSU students with what looked to be a Chinese game show on the television. There was nothing in here that says you are on the OSU campus on High Street. Nothing. Feeling the need for some heat on a cold day, I finally stopped in here. Parking can be a hassle, of course, since it's near campus. Bring change, or be mindful of the signs. The place is pretty much a hole in the wall- not dirty, but definitely not fancy. Communal tables, not much decor. It seemed authentic to me, with lots of Chinese on the menu and lots of Asians eating. I was overwhelmed, and went with things I know: crab Rangoon, and twice-cooked pork. The Rangoons were pretty good, if unexceptional. Fresh and hot, with a mostly-cheese filling that still tasted of crab. The pork was great. Tender, sometimes fatty in the good way meat, with good veggies (cabbage, peppers, mushrooms.) At first I was disappointed in the heat, but it had settled into the bottom of the dish and was definitely there. The oil and sauce seep down... There is plenty more on the menu that I'd like to try, and I had a great experience overall. My kind of place: interesting, tasty food with no pretense. read more

Only ended up here because the place we were originally going to go was closed. Even though per facebook it was supposed to be opened. Fast, cheap & good. First time here but will be back. Ordered off the American menu. Got the triple delight with fried rice: brown sauce, beef, shrimp, chicken and vegetables. Also got an order of crab rangoon, good and hot. Not the best but I've had a lot worse. Next time I will order off the authentic menu. Either the hot and numbing wok fried or the szchuan hot pot. The beef with scallion and onion also sounds great. Can't wait to go back. Maybe we'll even have some soup next time. I will say that while we were there everyone that came in or was already there was Asian. I will agree with another reviewer that you would not know you are on campus. Because there was no Block O, Shoe, OSU or Brutus in sight. read more

Red Chili is good for some cheap and fast Asian. I like how simple the menu is. This isn't the place if you're looking for authentic Chinese. It has a simple menu with a few basic items. The food comes out fast and not for that much. I ordered the Red Chili Tofu. It was about $6 for the lunch portion. The food came out in a few minutes. It's not a fancy place and it reflects it in the food. The broccoli was the only vegetable. It came in what tasted like regular old sweet and sour sauce. The tofu was cooked just long enough to be chewy yet firm. It came with a big portion of rice. There was so much of it there wasn't much room in the container for the rest of the meal. I would get something again from Red Chili if just needing something cheap and fast. It's completely not authentic but is still okay. The inside is kind of yucky so order takeout. read more

If you order the authentic spicy Chinese dishes that are posted on the wall, I think that the food here is good for the money. The restaurant does not offer a sit down service. You go to the counter and order the dishes. I got the fish in hot pepper and oil and my wife got the spicy chicken (both of these dishes had pictures posted on the back wall). My son got an American Chinese chicken dish while a friend's daughter who joined us for dinner got the hot pot fish. We shared. I liked fish with pepper and oil dish and was quite happy with the chicken as well. I didn't much care for the hot pot fish and the American Chinese chicken was okay. Personally, I like this place better than the other Chinese restaurants in walking distance of the OSU campus. read more

Please, for the love of god, if you're eating at this restaurant, don't get some General Tso's inauthentic crap that you can get anywhere. They have stuff like that on the menu for around 6 bucks to pander to people who don't have good taste in food or are too afraid to try authentic Chinese cuisine. This restaurant is fantastic and serves authentic Szechuan style food. Ranging from 8.25 to 8.95, you can get a plate of food with rice, or a big bowl of soupy noodles with rice. I suggest sticking to the 8.25 items - I ordered the 8.95 Intestine Peppercorn dish and I got less food than if I got the Intestine under the "hot and numbing" category of the menu (which is 8.25). But the best value is the 8.25 hotpot, which gives you a big bowl of soupy noodle and food as well as a bowl of rice. The best thing about this restaurant is that they use real Szechuan peppercorn, a unique spice that, when combined with chili peppers, creates a wonderful tingling spiciness called "ma la" in Chinese. It's a great experience and a wonderful flavor. This food is authentic, and please, for the love of god, don't stay within your comfort zone and order Americanized Chinese food. Try something new - the fish filet dishes are great, and if you're braver, try the intestine or the Chinese bacon. We are lucky to have such a restaurant so close to campus. read more

I'm a bit of a pad thai connoisseur and have been struggling to find any authentic pad thai that delivers to where I'm at. This particular dish I couldn't even take a whole bite of, it was that bad. I tried the pork and eggplant from the back of the menu and I can't wait to try something else next time. The food portions are good sized. I'm a graduate student at OSU and am around a lot of Chinese people. We were asking them "what is your favorite place to eat?" They would all say Red Chile because it is authentic and actually has spicy food. When they say spicy they mean it, which is awesome. Most other places I've been in Columbus have no spicy food at all. The flavors are great and they have tons of dishes with various sauces. I tend to get more non-Americanized food there; however, their Americanized food is also wonderful. A friend had General Tso's Chicken last night and it is perfectly cooked and isn't drenched in 20 pounds of sauce. I've tried around 15 things on the menu because we all pass our food around for everyone to try and have yet to find something I don't think is very good. They also have a decent selection for the vegetarian such as Eggplant and vegetables. read more

I tried the following dishes: 1) Hot and numbing wok fried with shrimp - good, spicy but not scary spicy, shrimp were fresh and plump 2) Szchuan hot pot with fish fillet - decent but not authentic it would be from other places, since this is a fairly popular dish thats sold in a bunch of Szchuan restaurants. This is by far the most authentic Chinese I've had yet in Columbus. There may be more authentic, but the place is always packed with Chinese students. I am usually the only white person in there. That should be a testament to the quality and authenticity. It's where the "locals" go and it's packed. This is not Panda Express and this is not No. 1 Chinese. It's a Szechuan place in disguise (well, it is called Red Chili, after all). So honestly, don't order off the regular menu. That's all the dumbed-down Americanized stuff that they don't put the effort into. The portions are even totally different! That's because it's not what they're there to sell you. Their goal is to feed people the back of the menu, the Szechuan stuff. It's spicy, but the Sichuan peppers have a numbing effect so that will help tone down the heat. The rest of the menu is just there to not look scary. Do not be afraid. The back of the menu is where you want to be. That's where the real dishes are. The Hot and Numbing Wok is their star dish, with its diverse array of vegetables: cabbage, bamboo, seaweed, ginger. The Pork with Bamboo is good and garlicky. I also highly recommend the Daikon Soup. When I discovered there was a pork bone in it, I was leery, but I was pleasantly surprised to bite into tender, brothy pork without a hint of skunkiness. That's an accomplishment for a Chinese restaurant. I'm still not sure about how the beef is as light-colored and soft as it is, but it tastes good and I don't get sick, so I keep eating it. Even if it turned out to be cat, for me it's passed the test. So what! Now unless it is cat, I haven't delved into exotic side of the menu and gotten pork hoof or intestines. But they offer it, and after the cleanness of the pork in the Daikon Soup, I'd say this is the best place to try Chinese offal. Someone at the register always speaks enough English to take your order. Other staff may not speak enough English to answer comfortably. The main guy there is friendly and can answer questions about ingredients. Sometimes it does take a little bit to get your food, so don't go here in a rush. They really do a lot of great dishes at Red Chili. If you ordered something and didn't like it, you either don't like real Chinese food, don't like Szechuan food more specifically, or you should try another dish and make sure it's from the back of the menu. You gotta go here at least once. Skip the typical Chinese takeouts with the same dishes, same backlit menu boards, same slight stanky smell. Go get some serious, vegetable heavy Szechuan dishes. read more

Red Chili's location on North High across from the OSU campus was previously Café Amelia, which was an interesting amalgam of coffee shop and Asian Bistro. Painted in bright colors and smart Asian-style decorations, it was reminiscent of an up-scale shop you might find in a tourist area of Hong Kong. Unfortunately, the food quality went down after a while, and the shop quietly became known as Red Chili. I was never sure if there were new owners or not, but I have stayed away from Red Chili until today, when my curiosity got the better of me. When I walked in, I first noticed that the walls were still painted in the same colors, but all of the wall hangings and photos that made the previous establishment interesting had been removed. I stepped up to the register to look at the menu, and noted that it was fairly standard (fried rice, General Tso's Chicken, etc.) and OK prices. I ordered the General Tsao's Tofu over steamed rice with broccoli, and a side of Crab Rangoon. I grabbed some water from the dispenser, sat down, and waited for my order. As I did so, I started looking around the dining room, and noticed immediately that every table in sight was filthy from previous eaters (this was just after 11AM, mind you). The walls were no longer vibrant but rather dingy and battered, the wall switches were blackened with dirty fingerprints, and the stained ceiling tiles were mismatched and grungy. The corner of the ceiling over the drink refrigerator seemed to be oozing with some sort of substance. I'm somewhat certain it was an adhesive of some sort, but why was it there? Still, lots of customers were starting to filter in from the street, so I imagined that the food had to be the draw for this place. When my order came up, I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of food, and it looked great. However, the steamed rice was literally crunchy, and the tofu (while seemingly well-prepared) was as tasteless as if I had eaten it raw. The brown sauce was OK, the broccoli was as I like it (al dente), and the Crab Rangoon was pretty good (albeit the filling was mostly cream cheese, but I don't mind that so much). In all I ate almost none of the rice, a third of the tofu, and all of the broccoli and Rangoon. Crunchy rice notwithstanding, it wasn't that it was BAD per se, it just wasn't that GOOD. I'm not sure why they seem to do the good business that they do, since there is far better Asian and Chinese food nearby (Moys, Joy's, Yau's, Diaspora, etc.) and the dining room is pretty gross.
