Decided to come here for dinner Thursday night based off reviews. Got sat upstairs which was fine, but got the table right next to the server room and stairs. Not exactly the best location but I digress. I ordered the red cow salad (greens, pine nuts, prosciutto, balsamic) and the mushroom Swiss burger with onion rings. The salad was very nice and light, you can't really go wrong with putting crunchy prosciutto on food. The burger itself was soooo good and savory. The angus beef was cooked perfectly to medium, juicy, and had the right amount of crispiness to the outside. Usually mushroom Swiss isn't anything special, but I would definitely come back for this one. I ate fries off my boyfriend's plate, and they were okay. The breakfast burger was so salty it was nearly inedible. I really tried To eat it. I rarely send back food or complain. Alex, our server, saw the mostly uneaten burger on the table and merely asked to take it away. He didn't ask if there was anything wrong with it. We let him know how inedible the item was and not only did we not even hear an apology, we were charged full price. No consideration to offer something else. I didn't feel heard at all. I've been to Red Cow before, but this was my first time at this location. I don't want to be repetitive, but the food was freakin amazing as always. It's the best place for burgers. They are always well seasoned and cooked to perfect. Fries are always perfect and I would highly recommend the sweet potato fries. I also love their coleslaw for a side if I'm feeling a little less carby. For this location specifically, the service was phenomenal. We always had water and our waitress was very attentive and fast. Happy hour is great and you can get some good local beer on tap for a good price. For happy hour you can also get discounted mixed drinks and apps. I took some family who were visiting from out of town. They loved it so much they wanted to go again to the location in the airport on their way home. I love that it was the perfect, local place to treat my family to dinner, with good quality food. The only downside to this location is the parking, but there is usually something close by. Make sure you sing up for their Email list. They send you a $10 coupon and you get a free burger on your birthday. Can't go wrong with that. read more

My coworkers have been telling me about this restaurant for the longest time, so my boyfriend and I finally gave it a try. We of course had burgers for our entrees (which are the most popular items) and shared the homemade chips and onion dip (which were our favorite part of the meal). They sat us immediately, the waiter was very accommodating but the food did take a little while (not sure if we were just hungry or if they were just busy at the moment). The food was delicious, but it appeared that the meat and bun ratio were not equal. Both our burgers had too much bun and not enough meat - which made us sad because the meat in which we did have was quite tasty. I will never refuse a meal at Red Cow. Their food has always been stellar and service always top notch. I will say the only frustrating thing about the St Paul location is that there is usually a bit of a wait but they have a smaller venue and its obviously a very popular destination. My go to menu items: -Ahi crisps= Probably my favorite app of all time. The ponzu sauce pairs perfectly with the ahi tuna, radish, and avocado. Very smooth finish. I could honestly eat ten or more in one sitting. Plus if you go during happy hour, it's half price! -Barcelona burger= The mixture of prosciutto and pepper give the burger this salty and unique quality that makes every taste burst with flavor. Manchego is an interesting cheese choice that you don't see as often but works really well with the entire ensemble. -Red Cow salad= More prosciutto and pine nuts...'nough said. FOOD: I got the Tennessee chicken sandwich (love the snark on the menu; you can get it "Minnesota nice style" without the hot sauce), and my husband got a burger. But the bread was flavorful and soft-on-the-inside-and-crispy-on-the-outside, and the overall recipes were great. A hundred percent worth it-- and pricing isn't bad either. AMBIANCE: Regular bar sort of feel, maybe a little divey. Family friendly, nice large tables. Nothing too groundbreaking, but it was certainly nice. SERVICE: Our waitress was friendly and prompt. If you're still on board, let's be brochachas. The meat was tender and not overly greasy as I'd originally feared from the addition of the bacon. It had a smokier, richer and more decadent flavor than a normal patty and retained its integrity until the last bite. Though I was initially skeptical of the candied bacon, it was only just sweet enough to notice with each bite--cloying by no means--and it served to balance the heady sharpness of the stone ground beer mustard. Goddamn. This thing is truly the burger of the gods. The fries didn't do a ton for me. I'm not a fan of the 'fried 28362 times' spuds that look all dark brown and always end up tasting chewy/stale. They weren't heinous by any stretch, but I wouldn't have missed them if they hit the floor. As an appetizer, Jenny and I also split the pork belly sliders because I decided to clog every single one of my arteries in one sitting. They, too, were well-balanced by the acidity and sharpness of their toppings and the belly portions were generous as well as fried to an ideal crunch. Once in a while I just really want to eat a gigantic (not turkey) burger and Scottish eggs with a huge helping of fries. We stumbled upon this while in Saint Paul visiting my parents. I imagined a place called Red Cow would have burgers. I was right! And boy, was I happy to have found this place. It's awfully dark in here (away from the bar) but since the food is so good, I guess I don't need to see it. I just want to photograph it for Yelp! Haha. We've eaten at this specific location three or four times but now that there is a north loop location, we have abandoned St. Paul. I'm sorry. It's not you. It's me. I promise. COME FOR HAPPY HOUR!!!! (I'm all about cheap good eats!) Their best and favorite appetizers are half off and soooooo worth the pain of being overstuffed later. Get the Scottish eggs. Get the ahi tuna crisps. Every time we end up going to the Red Cow, the night turns into a crazy, fun and unexpected adventure. The Cow on Selby was no exception! After a night of fancy dresses, masks, music and a gorgeous historic mansion (James J. Hill House) my sister and I needed to continue our night since we were not quite ready for bed yet. We were less than a mile away, so we decided to stop in for a bite and perhaps another cocktail (for me). There was hardly a wait, but the place looked packed and it was extremely loud. I was about to make an utterance of how much I already preferred the Cow in North Loop because this location looked tiny, crowded and noisy - but then - behold! - the lovely hostess lady led us UPSTAIRS with drink menus, happy hour and dinner menus in tow! I had no idea this place had a second level, and much to my delight, I was seriously into it. The clock had just struck 10:00pm so we made it on time for their 2nd happy hour of the day! $2 off Specialty Cocktails - thank you! I wanted the Death Rattle but then I took a quick look and realized the drink menu was not the same as the other locations, so I tried a new one - the "75". LOVED it. I got my old friend - the 60/40 with fries and a side of Red Cow Sauce (dill aioli). Sis got her Ultimate burger which she managed to tuck away quite nicely. Our server was so great, she refilled our water carafe about five times since we were drinking water like 2 camels who got lost in the desert. Red Cow has single-handedly turned me into a burger-lover and I never used to be one. The breeze coming in from the French doors was so refreshing after the rain. This is yet another "Fancy Burger" joint for the current burger craze. The prices are fancy as well. They also have some beer nights that appear to be all Surly. Oh boy, so not excited about that. My life for a good old fashion burger! I don't want a dozen things on my burger. Breakfast burgers? WHY!!! When I peeled back the crap on my burger I found that the burger patty itself is very good! It's lost in all the stuff they pile on top. Their burger patties could stand alone on a bun and still be wonderful. Too bad they don't know that. My burger was the Barcelona. Not bad. It was one that had fewer items slapped on board. If there is a next time I'll try something else. My GF had the Ultimate burger which is a fancy California burger. She liked it. We had the Onion rings appetizer. I tend to grade places based on how well they can do onion rings and the quality of their slaw. The ring batter was light and flakey! Perfection! So the slaw. Yes, I had their slaw with my burger instead of fries. It's a creamy style slaw but it's so thin and runny that the slaw itself had little flavor. Even after stirring up the slaw to re-coat it the flavor was lacking. I had to pepper the slaw to get any flavor out of it. They really need to come up with a different slaw mix. I have been to Red Cow SOOOO many times this summer its insane. In fact, I think one week, I was three times!!! I've cut back lately because I decided if I didn't stop with the Red Cow, I was going to turn into a White Cow!!! The Cowboy Burger-I know I live in the concrete city but I am still a country girl at heart and this was my first thing I ever ate here at the Cow..When I was presented with this Beast of a Burger, I had no idea how I was going to tackle it so I did it slowly. I ate the onion rings first which I loved and I am not an onion ring type of gal but these were perfect. Underneath the onion rings, was Root Beer Pulled Pork.....I dipped it in my side of BBQ and I could hear Keith Urban singing in my ear! So so Sweet!! By this time, I am full and I haven't even touched the burger yet but I did manage to eat half and took the other half home. Bun was grilled perfectly and it was divine. Caramel Bacon Puffcorn-Mehhh...Not a fan.....Reminds me of that bagged Puff corn you can buy with a few chunks of bacon and light caramel sauce... Scotch Eggs-One of my favorite items here!!! I think its me and the meat reminds me of a beef pot roast and I am just not a beef pot roast person....The cheese was bland to me and no......IMO...I know many people will disagree with me on this one! The fries, both regular and parmesan truffle were good. Nothing I would take home but if they were piping hot, I would eat them. If not, they will probably sit on my plate. The Mac and Cheese-Really good....Not spectacular but I tried it and it was a little bland but it was just the side dish of it so there was nothing in it. I know! I know!!! THE JAPANESE STICKY WINGS HERE ARE DA BEST!!! I've been to Red Cow twice now, and both times REALLY did not disappoint. Get the Japanese sticky wings for awesome texture, flavor, and max happiness! Even when you've finished eating all the seasoned crunchy skin of the wings, there's this delicious aioli sauce to dunk the rest of the wing in for a constant party of flavor! We've also tried a couple of their burgers before, but my fave is the Manhattan burger. The patty + pork belly combo is nicely balanced by the sweet jam. Ah sooooooo juicy and flavorful. Pro tip: If you're going to share this with someone, let the server know, and the kitchen will have it pre-cut for you in half (instead of the mess I would normally make trying to cut it myself) AND you end up giving you more fries this way because each person gets their own little bucket of them! The fries that come with the burger could be crispier... but they're very nicely seasoned. In the past, we've also tried the Ahi Crisps as an appetizer and that did not disappoint either. If you come with brunch, they also give you complimentary cinnamon mini donuts at the end of the meal! Win! There's plenty of seating - upstairs, ground level, and outside! However I was in a food zone where I couldn't focus on anything else and I wasn't able to fully appreciate the knowledgeable and friendly service at the time. I've had this place on my to "try" list for awhile. Surprised to see how fast this place opened the doors from what used to be. They have about four little outdoor tables so that's a plus. Take out service was very quick. Food: I ordered the grinder-while it was good, it was quite greasy, but that's the salamis fault. Tons and tons of pastrami with a lot of gruyere cheese and the girdinara vegetables which added that extra little punch. Fries were okay. For hand-cut fries, I was hoping they would have been a little better. I love hand -cut fries and have been become a bit of a fry snob, these were too crispy and done for me, but a lot of people like em' that way. My dining mate ordered the Ultimate Burger which was quite large. Their portions are quite large and easy enough for left overs. Not bad. I was informed that Red Cow had installed sound proofing panels so I had to check this out. 7:30 pm and the place was packed and it REALLY was much better noise-wise. When you read reviews of Red Cow on Yelp, you're likely to think "this seems too good to be true," as I did. That might be the reason why I waited more than a year to visit this restaurant... and why I feel like I need to make up for lost time by returning several times in the next three months. The burgers here REALLY are the best you'll get in the Twin Cities. During my first visit, I picked the French onion burger with grass fed beef, white cheddar, French onions, chive sour cream & homemade potato chips. Viva La Frickin' France! It was SO GOOD that I'll have a hard time ordering any other burger when I return. The homemade chips and homemade dip make it a tasty meal in each bite. We enjoyed loved sharing orders of fries (good), Parmesan-Truffle fries (better) and Poutine with Summit beer cheese sauce (best). -- but our favorite find was the caramel-bacon puff corn (heroic). At $4.50 a basket it's "not to be missed." Red Cow has become a guilty pleasure where I can escape with my wife (aka 'without the kids') for a grown up burger in a swanky spot.
