Our guide was Andy and we cannot say enough good things about him. He picked us up at 7 and drove us out to the area where we would be canyoneering. He was so knowledgeable about not only canyoneering but the history of the area and knew interesting facts about the plants, geology and animal life everywhere we were. He was really enjoyable to talk with. We went to 3 slot canyons and each was just beautiful. Since Red Desert Adventures keeps your groups private you have individualized attention so we could move along at our pace instead of waiting for a larger group to finish repels. Yes! They are the best! And Andy is TERRIFIC as an instructor, teacher, and supporter. I'm 75! Yes, 75, and far from in perfect shape. I and my two 18 year olds went on the 1/2 day Canyoneering and Rappelling expedition. Never gone before. After solid instruction from Andy and his support all the way, all three of us rappelled down three cliffs - total 155 feet -- without assistance. Then he maneuvered all of us, with me climbing on his shoulders, out of the very barrow slot canyon we needed to get through. Always felt safe! One of the best experiences ever. A few friends and I did a 3 day canyoneering course with Ethan over Memorial Day weekend. Red desert will come to meet you wherever you are staying in the Zion area and take you to canyons in that area. This eliminates the need to drive back and forth through the park to Springdale if you are staying on the east side, like we did. More time for canyons! We got up early and did a half day on the morning we had to check out of the hotel. Best decision ever! It was cool out and we had the area to ourselves for most of the morning. Andy was our guide and he was easy going and knowledgeable and we (a family of climbers) appreciated that he jumped right into the activity without a lot of fanfare. I had the pleasure of taking an instructional full-day, multi-pitch climbing course with Red Desert Adventure in September 2015. I put a significant amount of time into researching various companies operating climbing courses near Zion and as soon as I saw that Eric Draper co-founded Red Desert Adventure, I knew that this was the company for me. Eric's climbing photography and notable first ascents have been featured in Climbing Magazine. I'm an Arizona native, but his name is known regionally and it was a pleasure to take a course taught by one of his long-time climbing partners, the legendary Joe French. Both Joe and Eric have done a tremendous amount of work to advance the sport in southern Utah, and with their other guides, they've created a first-rate company. Joe and I completed a multitude of sport and trad pitches during my day out, and I learned A TON from him. Secondary to my primary desire to climb in southern Utah was to learn how to properly build anchors and gain regional climbing knowledge. Joe was the consummate teacher; he was an expert in his knowledge, patient, and just an all-around pleasure to learn from. Suffice it to say that I will definitely be back to take an intro to Big Wall climbing from the company, but regardless of your skill level, Red Desert Adventure will surely be an enjoyable experience. Family Exciting Fun! Highly recommend this company. Our guide, Jeremy was very kind, patience, charming and knowledgeable. First time Canyoneering and want to go again. Met at Mount Carmel Junction at a great gas station with clean bathrooms and a freezer case of ice cream for after the adventure. Got picked up on time and within 30 mins we were parked getting out for our adventure. Hiked into the canyon. Got to rappel 3 times. Beautiful scenery. Jeremy told us about the vegetation, animals, and his other adventures. Felt the most beautiful sand. Went with my husband, 15 year old daughter and 12 year old boy. My son had the best time because 6th grade is earth science and Jeremy provided supplemental instructions about rocks, formation and cliff drawings by native Americans. FUN! read more

2 buddies and I hired Red Desert for an all-day of refresher training in Red Canyon before we headed out to a weekend of canyoneering in Zion. Joe was our guide, and our thoughts are mixed. Pros: -private groups only meant we could move at the rate we wanted to--speed through topics we were already familiar with, and spend more time with areas we wanted to focus on. No waiting for other groups. -technically proficient instruction, answered our questions regarding pro's and con's of different techniques. -reviewed gear, blocking, anchoring, and lots of other intermediate-level applications of techniques. -our guide was generally friendly and patient, even waited on us as we registered at a campsite for the night. -Red Canyon was a beautiful spot accessed rather exclusively through a private gate, a great way to warm up for the days ahead. Cons: -Our guide repeatedly (~15-20 times) referred to tourists as TERRORISTS. We are tourists, and since the 3 of us are members of the military with 10 deployments between us--yes, often fighting terrorists--we were particularly insulted and offended by these casual remarks, no matter how lighthearted Joe thought they were, they certainly were not received that way. -When referring to people who had recently died in the canyons, our guide had a disturbing irreverence. Chuckling about finding body parts in the canyon and insisting it was a good way to weed out the weak in canyoneering didn't strike a chord with us. -When we asked about the difficulty rating of other canyons so that we could have an idea about which canyons we should try on our own, Joe assured us that they were all very easy to him. Not particularly helpful or insightful, took a bit of effort to figure out which canyons were out of our skill level. Bottom line - Red Desert charges slightly more for a private experience, but it seems the experiences on their tours vary a bit compared to more established competitors. read more

Fantastic experience with Red Desert. They were helpful and thorough answering questions before we booked our canyoneering tour. I loved that they arranged to meet us and pick us up near where we were staying. Dan, our guide, was very knowledgeable and conscientious. He explained everything to me, as a first-time rappeller, to make me comfortable. I loved hearing all the history of the area as well. They provide backpacks, dry bags, and helmets. Very patient with me. By the end of the day we had completed a series of 7 rappels. Awesome! A first-class experience for my first time canyoneering! Definitely recommend these guys. read more

This was my first time cayoneering. Joel picked us up and we were off on a wild adventure. We did a half- day and went to this unnamed canyon off the grid, it required a little off roading to get there. The instruction and experience was unforgettable. Each repel had it's own challenge. Yankee Doodle Canyon got our adrenaline up and got us wet up to our belly buttons Perfect day trip out of Vegas for two families of four with kids, ages 14,16,17&24. Two hours there, four hours of adventure two hours back to Vegas for a nice steak. Probably wouldn't recommend this particular canyon for kids under 10 in April. I'm so grateful for having had this experience, it's opened up a whole new world for my friends and I. My girlfriend, a good friend and I took a one day course/adventure a little over a year ago to prepare ourselves to do the Subway on our own. We had a great time, learned a lot, and created a lot of memories. We felt more than prepared to do the Subway on our own but more importantly the one day class opened us up to the world of canyoneering for the past year. My friends and I now go out canyoneering on our own at least once a month and we've been able to teach other novices and have them go out with us on technical canyons. Dan was our guide and was just terrific - my daughter is 9 and he really did a great job engaging her, answering ALL her questions and just making her feel comfortable enough to take an 80 foot rappel. She recently sent one of her teachers a letter about our trip and described the canyoneering as the best part - even above horseback riding and a two day backpacking hike in the Kolob canyons. Being scared of heights, it was a leap of faith for my brother & I but Eric made us feel so safe and secure that the fear quickly turned into fun. We went as a family 5 and even my 10 year old nephew was able to navigate the canyons and ropes with Eric's techniques. He was so knowledgable on everything about Zion, Utah, Canyoneering & Hiking that even during a drive to and from the destination we had a fascinating time. Our half-day family canyoneering trip in Yankee Doodle canyon was perfect. Jeffe was a fantastic guide. So, so knowledgeable about the area and our activity. And he was infinitely patient with my children (ages 10 and 12), and us! My 10-year-old was initially very afraid. Jeffe was encouraging and supportive and by the middle of the trip my son was having a blast. We ALL had a blast. And my husband has some medical issues that Jeffe was able to easily and happily accommodate. Never thought I would enjoy swimming in muddy water at the bottom of a canyon, but we loved it. If you go, be prepared to swim, although how wet you get will depend entirely on recent weather conditions. And longer shorts will be more comfortable than shorter ones. read more

A colleague and I took a canyoneering trip with Dan out to Birch Hollow. It was the first time for both of us, and we had limited rock climbing experience, so I'd classify us as novices without a doubt. There was a premium put on safety -- Dan did a great job explaining how all of the redundant safety systems he had in place worked, knew all kinds of stuff about the local flora, fauna, and geology, and was a very interesting guy to spend the day with. We had an absolute blast, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a trip with him to anyone I know. Joel took us on a happy retirement full day adventure for my husband, Ed, and a cure your fear of heights therapy session for myself. We also wanted to learn "how to rappel" techniques. Joel did a fantastic job of being a teacher, professional climber, therapist and entertainer. It was mid November so stayed out of water as much as possible, which also limited the areas for canyoneering. We ended up in Water Canyon near Hilldale which was very pretty. I would have given a 5 star if the canyon was a bit more spectacular in canyon colors. Can't have it all. Highly recommend Red Desert Adventure as they worked around our needs beautifully.
