Halloween decor is up! Oct 2025
    Amy T.

It took a while but we have finally attempted every 60-minute escape room at the San Mateo location for Red Door. We decided to skip the 30 minute one. We booked the rooms in the order of the listed difficulty: Once Upon a Time, Prison Break, Fair Game, The Gift, Confinement. What we wish we knew that sometimes the game master forgot to tell us: -There are unlimited hints if you don't care about trying to make the leaderboard (limit 3 clues, +1 clue if you guessed the answer to the riddle of the day). -Once you open the door to a room, you can wave at the black button with a hand sign inside another room that has a door connected to the room you already escaped from so you don't have to run back and forth. -Double tap the top of the directional lock to reset it. The Games: I played the first 4 games with my bf with just 2 of us, we have only done 2 escape rooms before in groups of 4 and we struggled a lot with Once Upon a Time. It was a long one with a lot of puzzles and we did not escape. I recommend to do this one somewhere in the middle of the other rooms. I actually recommend doing Prison Break first, it flows a lot better and we were able to escape that one with 18 minutes left with several hints. We proceeded to escape the next two. For confinement, we played with 5 people and we did not escape. Maybe 93% of the way there according to the game master. He said only 12% are able to escape Confinement, it is their hardest room. Confinement was probably our least favorite room, followed by Once Upon a Time. The Staff: 5/5 overall for our game masters, we enjoyed that the staff were enthusiastic about our successes but also are our hype men even when we don't escape, telling us our close we are. They're patient to explain the puzzles after and answer any of our questions about the room.

Service: 5/5 Breakout rooms: 4/5 The staff at Red Door are very kind. I've done 4 escape rooms at this location. Honestly most of them were pretty hard. A lot of the rooms are very well decorated. I truly enjoy my time here. I think some levels could benefit from a better balance between locks and puzzles. I've been in a room where it was 90% locks. We had to unlock 10+ locks in a room. I'd prefer to spend more time solving creative challenges and brain teasers, rather than just dealing with locks.

We came here for Halloween and it was so much fun! I love how they late they open and the staff were also very nice. I recommend checking this place out if you're just getting started for escape rooms - it's a great place to have fun with friends.

A great time! I bought tickets online a day prior- Because of our availability, CAPTAIN MANIACAL had the time slot we wanted Its a 30 minute room which clearly states on the website Mind you, this was our very first escape room ever and had an amazing experience All of the staff were super informational and friendly At the end when we finished, Lauren came in and took photos for us She also answered any questions that we had and provided us information on the 20% off if we schedule for another escape experience or purchased a gift card (which we did!) Can't wait to come back and try their other rooms! They have other locations as well so I will look into that **

Ok I'll admit it, I had a lot more fun than I expected to have being that I was going for a work event and potentially had to be locked in a room trying to escape with coworkers from some crazy clown room or something like that. We went with a large group (40ish people) that they handled in two different time slots ~ so that was kinda a bummer but ended up working out being that the facility is only so large, it accommodated about 20 of us per session and we took up all the rooms... which allowed us to sign up for what room we wanted (pending space per room). I along with others were a bit apprehensive about getting stuck in a room with clowns & coworkers (who we may or may not have "liked") so was excited to sign up for the easiest fairytale room just to try and get through it! I got super lucky with the group I was with and the room which made all the difference! Since we didn't make it out before the time was up, We ended up asking what we missed for future reference and it ended up that we would have needed another 10-15 minutes to escape since we kinda lagged in the first bit due to some miscommunication on instructions. Although we didn't escape (only one team out of everyone escaped) we had fun doing it and it was definitely a team building experience. *pro tip: do the online waiver before you come in especially with a large group so it doesn't hold up the intake process! They had some lockers (not enough for everyone so we kinda shared by the team) to leave your stuff in so you could be hands free. Note you cannot use your phones inside while playing. I hadn't been to this mall in forever and it's changed so much so I had no clue where this place was located & ended up parking on the ground floor and having to walk up and find it, but was easy enough. At least I didn't park on the complete opposite side! Parking was easy both on the ground floor and top floor (closest). Also a plus that it's close to a bar for once you get out lol

Came here to do an escape room with my colleagues at work and overall loved the experience. [[ Location ]] I think this place is really well located since it's inside the Hillsdale Mall. The location is also near the open plaza and food court so it's a nice view on the 2nd floor looking down while you wait for your game to start. It's also pretty close to the parking lot so you can directly walk from the parking lot onto the 2nd floor location if you want to. Since it's my first time here, I actually went through the mall and went up the food hall escalator to get there. [[ Experience ]] Overall things went well but I did not really enjoy the check-in procedure for large groups. Before we went, we signed an online waiver for liability purposes which is fine. However, when you check-in again, they make you physically write your name down on a piece of paper and then check that you signed the waiver one-by-one. For our group of 22+ people, I think this took over 15-20 minutes which I thought was pretty crazy. Other than that, the actual venue is quite nice/clean and the game we tried (Once Upon a Time) I thought was really fun. Since I'm a "noob" compared to seasoned veterans of escape rooms I thought it was pretty difficult even though this is the easiest game they had there but the game master was great and having 3 hints is helpful. [[ Overall ]] If you haven't ever done an escape room, I definitely coming here for a first experience. Great one to start with!

This is specifically for the room CAPTAIN MANIACAL. While booking the only available room at the time, i wasnt aware it was only a 30 minute escape room. The puzzles were too easy and didnt require much thought. Finished the room in less than 10 minute. Did not feel that this room was worth the price paid. It felt like it should have been provided for free and as a training room to explain how an escape room works. You can guess the answers and by the way the room is set up, youll get it right. This is the first escape room in my life that ive done that was this short. Not because im really good at it, there was nothing to it. Difficult states 6/10. But really, its like 1/10. The puzzle was as difficult as those baby toys that ask you to put a certain shape into the box. There was no challenge. There was no excitement. If i could ask for a refund, i would. Avoid this money grab of a room.

It is a 1 hour long puzzle solving experience! I would recommend coming 10-15 mins earlier to ensure all waivers are attached!

Do they still have the 50% promotion?

Promotion is no longer available for 1st visit. However if you pay full price for 1 visit you may be able to get 50% off your 2nd.

I'd say the Edison room is my favorite so far. The thoughtfulness in clues and gags are amazing!! Very concerning experience…read more (Understandable) We visited Palace Games recently and were instructed by staff to place all personal belongings in a designated basket area before entering the game. The basket was located outside of the game room and remained out of our sight for the entire duration (~2 hours). (Incident) After the game, we discovered that a wallet valued at $1000+ (including cash and multiple cards such as ID and credit cards) was missing. Based on the noticeable weight difference before and after, we were able to reasonably determine that the item went missing during the game time. (Their Action) We requested assistance immediately and asked to review surveillance footage. Initially, we were told that the footage would need to be "retrieved through a third-party vendor" and that we would be contacted later -- however, no one followed up. The following day, after multiple attempts to reach them, we were informed that the "vendor was unavailable (PTO) "and the footage could not be accessed at this point. Later, a manager called and stated that there is no recording at all (⁉), only live monitoring on site. When we asked for confirmation of this and whether we could document the conversation, the call was abruptly ended Subsequent attempts to follow up have gone unanswered. Additionally, on the game day, we felt rushed to leave immediately after the game ended, even though our scheduled end time was 4:00 PM and it was only around 3:45 PM at that point. This made it more difficult to properly check our belongings around the game area. We followed all instructions provided by staff, yet there appears to be no secure storage, no accessible review process, and no clear accountability when something goes wrong. Their responses were inconsistent and changed over time. the incident has NOT yet been addressed at this point. We are sharing this experience for transparency regarding how personal belongings are handled and how incidents are addressed. Update: The owner has reached out to us, apologized, and showed us the available surveillance footage. The footage only covers the lobby and hallway areas and does not include the room where personal belongings are placed, so it was not possible to determine what happened. We appreciate the follow-up and the owner's sincere attitude. However, this situation highlights that the designated storage area for customer belongings currently has no surveillance coverage or secure storage. We hope additional measures (such as lockers or better monitoring) can be implemented in the future to prevent similar incidents. While we acknowledge their efforts to address the situation, we are keeping our original rating to reflect our experience.

Sorry, I can't remember anyone else's names. One of the most engaging and interesting Escape Rooms I've ever done. Although you might find cheaper Escape Rooms out there, Off the Couch Games offers a more unique experience that I think definitely gives you plenty of entertainment for your dollar. I eagerly await Chapters 4 and on. Only room for improvement I can really say is signage. The staff does a really good job introducing you to the game, providing context, and giving an overview of the rules. Additionally, they mentioned that we'd receive a discount off our total based on how quickly we finished, which was extra encouragement for us to get through the game. You immediately get immersed into the game before even walking into the actual room and once you're in Occam's Apartment, it feels even more real. The room itself is well decorated, with nice details scattered around the apartment. I loved every minute of the escape room experience and felt challenged throughout the time we were there. We did ask for hints throughout our time there and the answers were often given through directional questions. What I liked most about the Off the Couch set up is that the escape rooms are all a continuation of a storyline, so it makes you feel invested in the experience. I'm looking forward to the next escape room!

Although we enjoyed the general plot of the scavenger hunt and liked the experience of narrowing down who the culprit was, we felt that the clues were excessively specific, as we had to skim through every label in each area of the museum to get the information we needed. I think we would've preferred more general clues where you could still enjoy the information in that area of the museum without having to work so hard to search through each line of text. I also felt like the clues given were not very connected to the objects in the museum, and the plot of the mystery didn't seem very relevant to the setting of the museum. This took us out of the environment of the museum and made the experience less enjoyable. I felt that the length of was too long at 2.5 hours, although if the clues hadn't been as specific, perhaps we would have been less mentally exhausted at the end. We felt that it was fairly easy to narrow down the culprit with a handful of clues, so I think it would have made for far more intrigue if the clues were more directly tied to the plot and involved more thinking rather than just piecing together tidbits of information. My biggest qualm was the price of the scavenger hunt. I felt like paying $60 for to cover the cost of the museum admission, the video at the beginning of the scavenger hunt, and the website that was made for the scavenger hunt was very unreasonable. An average escape room in the area is about $40 to $50, and escape rooms have much more upfront expenses for the organizers, including the cost of renting the space, the elaborate props, and the staffing. This was a fairly enjoyable one-time experience, but in the future I would just go to an escape room.
