The restaurant is smaller, giving mom and pop which I love. The food is reasonably priced and service was quick. My issue was when our main food came out. We found a washer in one of the dishes and the waiter had a hard time explaining or taking responsibility. They said it was because they just built a new machine for cutting cabbage and it must have fell off. We didn't complete the meal, and asked if our food could be comped since we didn't get to eat it (didn't trust). I've been a loyal customer of Red Dragon for years, but after my most recent visit, I have to say--this place just isn't what it used to be. It's sad to see a once-reliable local spot decline so much. First off, the hot tea was practically flavorless, so weak it tasted like someone had just waved a tea bag over hot water. Not exactly the comforting start I was hoping for. Then, the whole place reeked of heavy-scented Fabuloso, which was so overpowering that it made eating feel more like a chore than an experience. On top of that, the atmosphere has become dark, dingy, and uninviting, like they've just given up on making it a pleasant place to dine. And the food? Major disappointment. I ordered the Chicken with Broccoli, and somehow, they managed to mess up the vegetables--some were completely overcooked and mushy, while others were practically raw. It was like they couldn't decide whether to burn them or not cook them at all. The overall quality of the dish was subpar at best, lacking the fresh flavors and consistency that used to make this place stand out. It's a shame, but unless things improve, I won't be coming back. I wanted to really really like this place. My bride has bragged on it since she used to work in the area and visit for lunches during the week and how it used to be hard to get a table here. Red Dragon had changed hands, however, since she worked in the area. The "OPEN" sign was not lit up, so I was not sure the place was even open for lunch when we arrived. The hours posted on the door indicated they were open so I tried the door handle and sure enough, it was not locked. For a Friday afternoon, it looked like business was slow. There did not appear to be a host/hostess on duty when we came in, so we waited at the door for a few minutes until someone appeared from the back to seat us. We were given lunch special menus when we were seated. I was hoping to see the full menu, but after looking at the lunch specials I felt like I knew what I would like. The Hot Braised Shrimp turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. I was expecting spicy - something to make me sweat and set my mouth on fire. It was not, and it was on the bland side. I ate about half the meal and left the rest, I wasn't interested in taking the leftovers home. Our server was definitely on top of things, visiting the table to make sure we were okay, our drinks were refilled and what not. The food came out pretty quickly from the time we ordered it. With the parking situation the way it is, and being underwhelmed by the food, it's unlikely I would revisit Red Dragon. read more

Fast, predictable, pretty decent Chinese food, rarely eat-in. Carry out is very easy, cramped parking lot on some occasions.

Put an online order in around 3:00pm with a pickup time of 6:00pm. I arrived there about 5:55pm and stood in line for 15 minutes to inquire about my order. When I reached the pickup window with my online order number I had to pull a picture of the order acknowledgement to have them say "oh yea, online order". Then told me they were behind and it wasn't ready. I asked how long. Their answer "I don't know. So I pressed for an answer... 5 minutes, 10 minutes or do I cancel and write this review? The man came back 15 minutes. I cancelled and here is the review. So an order they can make in 15 minutes they can't make in 3 hours. Additionally, this is how small businesses go out of business by ditching their repeat customers. You will need to find another one to replace me. This meal was our planned Christmas eve meal. we found an alternative and Merry Christmas to you too. Shame on you for accepting and committing to an order that you couldn't complete and messing up a family's plans. No more patronage from our family and possibly friends. read more

I'm a fan of Red Dragon! It's a great spot to grab takeout or dine in depending on what you are looking for. I've been in when takeout takes a minute and when it's been slammed and I've waited for 20 minutes. They do have a parking lot behind the building so it is easy to park and run in. If you are looking at the building turn in at the left of the building and there is a top level parking and you can go down for lower level parking. For those familiar they share the building/parking with Mandolin. The takeout window is in the back of the restaurant past the dining area. I've also dined in and the family who owns the restaurant is the sweetest and really wants to make sure you're happy. As far as classic American Chinese dishes go, I think the lo mein is pretty tasty and flavorful here. The crab rangoons are good, but they could use more crab in them for sure. The sesame chicken is different than how most places do it and it's worth a try. Their chicken with coconut sauce is good if you have a picky eater child who just wants plain (but tasty) chicken fingers. The crispy beef was also a big hit with our table. One of my favorite dishes here is their duck with gravy. Yum! We will continue heading over here to grab takeout or to dine in with our babe! read more

Whoa, the Red Dragon has been in Raleigh for fifteen plus years which means two things! It must be ok and it must be old-school! And yeah, that pretty much describes the place. Inside it's small and dark, not much light comes through the front windows. Staff seems to be very attentive and there's a lot of them for a small place. I did a bit of takeout and no complaints on the quality, the baby corns were a nice touch. Portion-sizes are decent, the lunch is a pretty good deal here! Parking is also a bit tight on this corner of Fairview as an FYI. But in the end, would I come here again?! Hmm, the challenge with being around a long time is that it's hard to change things up without upsetting your long-time patrons. And that's sorta where Red Dragon is at. I'm sure it was great years ago but time has caught up to the place. If you're in the hood and dying for some decent Chinese food, stop on by. The WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!! I haven't been here in years, last time I was here the food wasn't good, but I decided to give it another try. This time I didn't even get my food, I was dining in, ordered my food, sat there for close to 30 minutes without my food, the server didn't one time come to check on me! I did not get what I ordered and I when I called, I was told that King Pao Beef was supposed to be sweet. It was simply beef and celery in a sweet beef broth sauce. I was seriously craving spicy beef with peanuts etc. the picture shows red peppers and peanuts in the dish. It is my go to Chinese dish. This was awful. Tasted like beef stew with sugar. Awful. Red dragon is neat little Chinese spot that is tucked away in what seems to be a residential area. The restaurant is very intimate and they cannot host large parties. I went on a Friday during lunch hours and was seated immediately. White enjoying my meal it did get a bit crowded as people were coming in and hanging out waiting for tables. I tried their pu pu platter and it was great! It included crab wontons, egg rolls, ribs, etc. along with that our meal came with either soup, egg rolls, or crab wontons. The fire center for reheating and roasting is also pretty neat. I got the pepper beef with fried rice for my main dish and it was great! The sauce that the beef came in was great. Probably the worst Chinese food I've had in Raleigh. Their hot and sour soup was pretty good, but nothing else was edible. The lo mein was somehow a box of cut up pieces of mushy noodles. The sesame tofu was fried, but mushy and stuck together with a sauce that tasted like orange candy. The crab rangoon were just cream cheese. The broccoli was grey and more water chestnut than broccoli. We ended up spending over $100 for dinner and eating just the fried rice and hot and sour soup.
