Super fresh, great service. But Not impressed with their calamari. Very plain, you get 4 pieces and it comes with weird fried veggies and something we couldn't figure out. Not worth getting at all. Minus that I enjoyed it. Plan on going back and trying more things. I had the spicy maki roll (I think that's the spelling) favorite is the yellowtail. First impression, beautiful establishment. Very clean and modern looking. There teas wasn't extremely hot which was nice and understandable but I'm use to super hot tea from the Japanese restaurants back home (California). The miso soup was good, nice and hot but when the sushi rolls came out I was disappointed in how small they were. The sushi is not the best around and the service is terrible! We've been here like 5 times and there's one waitress that we've had who just always seems to forget us. Tonight, it took us an hour to get our food after ordering when multiple groups of people had walked in, been seated, got their food, ate it, paid, and left before we got our food. I don't know the waitress's name but she is the only waitress they have there who works the row of tables to the right as you walk in. She constantly forgets really small things like waters, chop sticks, and one time a second beer; but tonight she forgot to put our order in and blamed it on the kitchen being really backed up. I stayed overnight in Battendorf, Iowa, and went to Red Ginger for dinner. I had the chicken yakisoba, which was delicious! It came with a nice clear soup and small salad. There was plenty of chicken, but not enough vegetable for my taste. Also, it seemed to have wheat noodles rather than soba noodles. It was still pretty darn yummy, though! Dinner came to about $10. Server was a little slow and forgetful but very nice. Sushi chefs were not very friendly or open for discussion on freshness of fish. (Most likely because no one ever asks) They also forgot an order and we had to reorder it. BUT the sushi was AMAZING. I am VERY disappointed in the level service I received today. My waiter was unfamiliar with the promotions on Special Rolls; I asked him if he wanted to go outside to confirm buy 2 get 1 free was on the sign that is posted in the window. He did not go to look, but let me order 3 special rolls anyway. When it came time to pay he tried to tell the "manager" on-duty it was his mistake. She was very disrespectful to the waiter, and dismissive of me letting her know that I asked him before ordering. She was not willing to budge on any type of compensation, and she obviously doesn't understand the phrase "the customer is always right". I will NOT be back. I had a first time customer with me who also stated she would not return due to the nasty service. It's unfortunate that Hui Jiang's attitude caused Red Ginger to lose two (and potentially more) customers. They need to improve the clarity of their 'Happy Hour' and understand that such a phrase typically applies to drinks--unless specifically noted otherwise. read more

All I can say is SO MANY NOMS! I don't care so much about the presentation as I do the taste and let me tell you, both are spot on. I haven't had anything I didn't like. My only complaint is the servers. It's not that the service is slow by any means. It's more their attitude. They are rude and troll like. But honestly, you come for the sushi not the servers. I have given this place more than one chance, poor service, not the best sushi. I moved here and heard this was a new and great place... So the first time we ordered off the menu, sushi was okay, nothing great, service wasn't the best. Had a friend come into for the weekend and stopped back in about 3 months ago, (about a year from the first visit) Knowing the sushi off the menu wasn't worth ordering I decided to have them make a roll I know is amazing... Had the most interesting experience at RedGinger today... the waitress brought us our food and told us they were out of forks. After about 5 minutes of trying to use chopstix, I asked for a fork... she said they are all in the dishwasher. She brought us one spoon... after sharing one spoon for a bit, I asked again for a fork. She said again they didn't have any. I sat there dumbfounded for a moment and she just looked at me. I asked, what about a plastic forks? She said, oh yeah, I didn't think about that. Really?? First time at Red Ginger and my wife and I were pleasantly surprised... We had seaweed salad, gyoza, a shrimp tempura appetizer, a specialty roll and some tuna and salmon sushi... The food was all very good, well prepared, and reasonably priced (even with a glass of wine and a couple of beers). Saturday night meant a good volume of customers, which unfortunately meant a few tables with loud children, but that was probably on us for coming at 6pm. If we have any issue it has to do with the ambience. The restaurant lighting is way too bright and there was no background music. This made dinner a little less restaurant like and more institutional feeling. Fix that, and Red Ginger is a great pick! read more

The new waiter was very immature, asking us ridiculous questions and our table and the couple next to us were just waiting to see if a camera crew was going to come out behind the scenes and tell us we've been pranked. Having been here before, we were looking forward to returning. When we arrived at 550pm, we noticed it wasn't busy. Only 5 tables occupied. We were hoping to have a nice dinner before a 730 show. Our server was polite and took our orders promptly. Sushi came quickly...delicious. but followed too soon by our soup and salad. Then we waited...over 40 mins for dinners. My tempura was good, blazing hot. ..but the hibachi was stone cold. Looked as if it had sat FOREVER! of course we figured out quickly that something was up. Our server had no clue. Obviously an order was forgotten. She never acknowledged it...only apologizing. Took it back and heaped hot rice on the plate as a solution! Still, no manager, no one to explain. Nice atmosphere, cheerful staff, experienced sushi rollers. Wait staff was helpful in explaining certain items and was sure to point out best seller's. The spring rolls were a little mushy but the Sexy Girl Roll was excellent with a nice presentation making it appealing to the eye. read more

We've tried all the sushi bars in the QC and I would rate Red Ginger as #1. We just tried it May 15th and had one of the special roll called "Henry Roll" (it was a work of art) and the a Philadelphia roll, and a sushi dinner. We also had edamame, which was the best I've ever had anywhere. It was a healthy portion cooked to perfection and salted perfectly. The Philadelphia roll had great sized pieces of high quality cream cheese and avocado. Other restaurants have gone to the cheaper (and not as tasty) melt in your mouth white tuna, and the white tuna in the sushi dinner was really good. We will try one of the tuna rolls next time. Service was quiet and took care of us well. The only downfall was the clear soup. It needed a tad more flavor. I'd give them a 95%. We will be coming back and hope that their quality stays the same as we had today. read more

I created an account and posted this review, because I just couldn't let someone like you go through life judging other people for being close minded, when you really think there is any good sushi in the Midwest. You obviously live in a bubble where you sadly think this is the best there is. I've eaten all kinds of sushi, made in all different ways. I've had it all along the east and west coast and around the globe, New York, Miami, LA, Nagoya and Kyoto Japan, just to name a few. However, I have never been served an "oven roasted" roll that was BURNED, and been told that the is normal, because people around here like it that way. The Bettendorf Roll was bland and boring. The Red Ginger roll was UNEDIBLE. Spicy tuna and Alaska were ok, its hard to mess those up. Spicy mayo was oddly smoky with a weird thickened pudding-like texture. Service was slow, especially for an empty restaurant. I have a serious question... WHY CAN'T ANYONE IN THE MIDWEST LEARN HOW TO MAKE SPICY MAYO CORRECTLY????? Even though their spicy mayo was weird, it was better than the other crap ive had in Iowa. Nobody in the MidWest knows how to make spicy mayo. Not that difficult. You do not use Miracle Whip!!!!!!!!!!!!! Positive: the little variety of fish they had was fresh, rice was fresh. Negative: Service was poor to say the least. First time in a long time I gave someone a 10% tip, and left with a bitter/burned taste in my mouth that lasted quite some time. I don't know why I keep trying "Japanese" restaurants in the Midwest--especially when it comes to the tempura. I was excited when I saw tempura soba on the menu, but was sorely disappointed. Firstly, a mistake I have seen often, both in the Midwest and in the Pacific NW: the shrimp in the tempura was breaded with panko. It's right for the ebi (shrimp) fry, but not tempura. That just seems like laziness. Second, the noodles were chuka soba, or "Chinese" noodles, not the regular buckwheat soba. That's plain ignorant. Some of the sushi was not prepared correctly, such as the inari. Prices were in line with other Japanese restuarants in the area: expensive for the quality.
