    Storefront for Red Knapp's Rochester
    Mark K.

This 50s-style diner/burger bar in lovely downtown Rochester is a good place to grab a burger or other traditional American fare. The website says it is celebrating 70 years of service, which means it has kept its same general presentation and form since its inception. That's quite remarkable and very interesting. We visited while in town on a Saturday night before Christmas to view the lights, and it was quite busy. The dining room is rather small with limited seating, much of which is counter space. We had about a 30-minute wait for a table. But we were able to roam around close by while waiting with a buzzer to notify us concerning when we could be seated. We actually were seated in a back wing of the restaurant not easily visible from the front where there were 3 or 4 booths. Our son, daughter-in-law and three-year-old grandson were with us, but the booth accommodated us without too much difficulty. Our server was reasonably prompt in waiting on us, although the fact that it was busy showed with slightly slower-than-expected delivery of the food. My son and I both got the Ang's BBQ Burger which offered bacon, cheese, onion, lettuce and avocado topped with BBQ sauce. It was quite good. My daughter-in-law had the Double Cheeseburger which she liked rather well. My wife had the Burger Deluxe with her favorite topping, teriyaki sauce. She was likewise quite happy with her choice. The fries deserve a mention as well as they were nicely done. My wife and daughter-in-law got the Boston Cooler (ginger ale float) and the Brown Cow (root beer float). Both were good though pricey ($8 each). The final cost for this meal with four burgers, fries to share, two shakes, two sodas, the floats and a grilled cheese kids meal was $110 (throwing in tax and tip). At $22 per person (probably more like $25 per adult), the value was OK. Overall, it was a fun place that offered decent service and good food. But the value was on the ragged edge. I would give it 3.5 stars if Yelp would let me, but I'll round up because it was fun and they pulled off the 50s/60s burger joint theme pretty well.

My wife, I stopped in to get a T-shirt and a malt. Regretfully, the T-shirts are under lock and key and the staff did not have access. I must say, however, that the chocolate malt was absolutely delicious, thank you!

What an amazing nostalgic place to grab a bite and a shake. I stopped by here after dinner and got a classic chocolate malt and it was amazing! One of the best I've had. The service was amazing and the girl working was so cheerful. Truly an awesome spot to go to anytime of year.

I'll start by saying I'm not a long time Rochester resident who's downgrading this place because it's not the same as it used to be. That said, there have definitely been changes made here...and not for the better. My first visit here was about 2 years ago and they had an amazing build your own burger option with great toppings like burnt onions and zip sauce. At that time, I honestly felt like their burgers could Give Red Coat Tavern a run for its money. On my recent visits, they've removed that as an option and instead now I offer a very limited build your own option, and have in its place several over complicated preplanned burgers. I had the teriyaki Hawaiian burger today. It was OK. The grilled pineapple was nice, the bacon was very thick and the teriyaki sauce was delicious. The downside though, was the fact that the bun was not toasted and the burger was cooked well beyond medium. My wife had a grilled chicken sandwich that was nothing to write home about. We shared french fries and onion rings. Again both good neither were spectacular. I will agree with the other reviewer's who had complaints about the pricing here. Our bill for two sandwiches and one and a half sides came to $40 that's a lot of money for an average Burger counter experience This definitely seems like a situation where new owners came in and tried to mess with a good thing. At this point I'm afraid this restaurant will be out of our rotation going forward.

Where to start? The service is awful, I had to take places and cups off my table and set them on the bar rail because the server wouldn't take them. The milkshakes are not blended very good at all. Huge chunks of candy still in them. The burger is alright, really nothing special same as anywhere honestly. The over priced seasoned fries are very bland and not good at all. The Mac and cheese is WEIRD. I don't even have a good description of it because I don't know it was just really weird and not good it Had a tiny bit of spice to it so maybe that's why it was edible? I'm not sure. Also they serve it with a plastic spoon which is weird and they do not give you any silverware unless you ask. Highly over priced for food that we could have gotten at a Coney Island for way less with better service and better sides. I would never come back and I suggest you save your money and find somewhere else to eat also

Walking in this looks like an old diner with the retro look and signs. The service was pretty good for it being a younger staffed restaurant. The food was subpar for the price for 2 cheese burgers fries mac and cheese and a milkshake it was $50. I would not return not worth the hype

You can easily walk in, not wait awhile, and get a seat quickly. The restaurant interior was modern industrial with Scandinavian/minimalist influences(?), which I loved because it felt a cozy and welcoming. Any who, back to the service and food. I really enjoyed my entrée, I choose Corned Beef Hash & Eggs and the asiago bread, the dish was a bit heavy (not in a bad way), and I ended up requesting a diet coke but overall, the dish was very good, and the corned beef is not the type from a coney island restaurant, it was shredded and flavorful. The service was outstanding, and our waitress was beyond pleasant and attentive. Would I recommend this place to others? Yes. Would I come back again? Yes, there were other items on the menu I'd like to enjoy.

We took our chances and came on a Saturday night at 5p. Thankfully the place wasn't busy yet. We got a table in the back entrance and it was perfect. Very romantic with the lighting and intimate dining experience. By the time 530p-6p rolled around it was pretty packed. Our waitress was great - attentive and welcoming. Large menu with lots of options both food and drink. The bread and oil were divine. We went with the happy hour menu which was impressive to see on a weekend. The happy hour menu was amazing - a ton of drink and food options. We were able to order two cocktails and 4 food items all for about $60! The limoncello spritz and limoncello martini were both so delicious and balanced. Ordered the tomato and cucumber salad, carciofi fritti artichoke, mussels, and the meatball trio. I am still dreaming of this meal and would eat it again in a heartbeat! Everything was a good portion size even for happy hour and so delicious. Meatballs were tender, the artichoke had an amazing breading on it, the mussels were fresh, and the salad was refreshing. We were so full afterwards and had to decline dessert. Downstairs has the restrooms but there was a single stall restroom on the main dining floor too. In the front is more of a bar type seating, middle houses the kitchen and the back is the more moody dining room. Metered parking lot in the back of the restaurant. Such a great spot in downtown Rochester!

The only nice thing I can say about it is that the bread (pizza dough?) was great and so was the staff. I tried to stay positive, but once I tried the Calamari Captain I knew this whole night was likely heading sideways. It did not taste fresh. Then I had the meat ravioli. The sauce tasted like a sickly sweet tomato concentrate (pizza sauce?) - I can't figure this place out. This is one and done.

We made reservations and arrived and got seated. At first, everything was great. The server came and got our drinks and bread right away and asked what we wanted for the app. We put two apps in and when he came back with the drinks we put the pasta in. We asked for more bread and he said he will bring it. This is where it went wrong. About 10 minutes later he passed us to go to his table behind us and said oh yeah the bread Im getting that and your refilled drinks. After that we did not see this guy for almost the remainder of the service. We ate the apps and then still no drinks. We waited for him to come back in this cornered area and did not see him. The manager brought the pasta and they forgot the chicken for my husband. He got us refills and my husband told Him and he said "well I can put in an order and then you can just add it to the pasta". He brought the chicken out 14 minutes later and his pasta was cold. He had waited to eat it. Still no server or bread. Finally the waitress that was in that area asked us if we needed anything. I told her we were waiting for the read for a long time and that we havent seen the waiter since he took our order. He never came when the food came. Just as we said that he walked over and said oh Im getting the bread. They said the bread was taking a while. As he said that, the manager brought the table next to us some bread. Then the waitress brought some for her new table. We waited again. She ended up giving us her bread and then got new bred. He finally came with the bill and said oh did you want dessert? We obviously didn't as we didn't even see him the whole time. He took forever to bring us the change. This is the second time that the service has not been great. The food is great and tastes great. The restaurant is nice and clean and I like the atmosphere. I just feel like paying $72 for this service wasn't great.
