    Shrimp Pizza
    Chelsea D.

*Review from a visit pre-COVID19* My fiancé & I absolutely LOVE this place! We love to sit outside overlooking the golf course! It really is stunningly beautiful. When it's a little chillier out or when we go later in the evening, we sit at the tables with FIRE PITS. Yes, FIRE PITS! All you have to do is ask your waiter/waitress to assist in turning on the fire (which can sometimes mean they get a propane tank & hook it up to the table - don't worry it's very quick to set up but worth it). We got the Shrimp Scampi Pizza which unfortunately I don't think is available anymore! So sad because it's the best non-conventional pizza I've ever had. * PS If you are planning to go with older folk, pregnant women, or kids, I suggest being dropped off at the valet entrance on the side of the building closest to the Parkway. There is a steep walk up to the restaurant along the golf course that may be a little difficult for them. It's also the same area where golf carts will be passing you, FYI.

The large chunk of lettuce stem in my cesar salad. Fabulous!

We would have given this restaurant one star if not for the waitress and manager. The tables outside were all full but there were only 4 tables inside with people dining. There was also some sort of golf outing which filled the bar area with golfers. There were a lot of servers standing around but still service was very slow. We ordered our drinks and waited 20 minutes to get them. The waitress did apologize and tell us that they were very backed up. (Hence, the second star) I ordered a dirty martini and got a martini glass full of yellow liquid which tasted like vermouth and olive juice. It was awful. I told the waitress and she suggested that I order something else. I told her that all a dirty martini consisted of was vodka and a splash of olive brine. She came back a few minutes later and told me that the manager was making my drink so it would be better. The manager brought me my drink and apologized. She was very nice and the martini was much better. (Again, the reason for the second star) Now onto the food. I had the cesar salad- it was very bland. And it also had a giant chunk of the stem included in it. Yuck. My husband ordered the fried calamari. It was very tender but tasteless and the marinara sauce tasted like tomato paste with sugar added in. He also had the cheddar burger. The bacon was so incredibly salty- it almost tasted old and the meat in the burger was bland. After all was said and done, we spent $72 for a bland salad, tasteless fried calamari, a flavorless burger and 3 drinks. We will definitely cross the Red Knot off our list.

I go to the golf range here a ton and sometimes I pick up lunch. It's always pretty good even though a bit over priced. Today I literally paid $18.50 for a salad, $8 of which was for adding the four slivers of chicken on the salad. Oh and by the way there are 5 ingredients in this salad, one of which being cheese, and they forgot that. Yeah, no thanks.

    Perfect night

What a beautiful night - service is good and food is excellent - sitting outside - what a sunset.

The rigatoni had grilled chicken, fresh rigatoni, homemade marinara cream, Parmigiano Reggiano, and Calabrian chilis. This was very tasty. The chilis provided a spicy factor to this dish. The grilled chicken was cooked appropriately and paired well with the pasta. The risotto had tomatoes, artichoke, and mushrooms. Like mentioned, this was supposed to have artichoke, but it seemed like asparagus was used instead. This was a little plain. It needed more seasoning, specifically salt, pepper, and cheese. The risotto was cooked just right though. Will I go back? I was not present but probably would head there.

The food is so creative, fresh, and delicious, the service is attentive and knowledgeable and consistent (not the norm in the suburbs), and we love the ambiance. It was a gorgeous night to sit outside, but we opted for our favorite - bar seats to watch the action. It's hard to find this level of consistency and creativity even in NYC, but to have it right here in Maplewood is so wonderful. So many restaurants in the suburbs rely on frozen, pre-made items from large restaurant supply chains that finding innovative cooking completely from scratch is a real challenge. In a sea of mediocre restaurants, Perla lives up to its name: a true gem! We have been so impressed by the daily specials this summer. We started out with a scallop crudo with yuzu, jalapeno, and shallots that is my favorite crudo right now. We followed that with the new shrimp tostada and I'm only sorry we didn't order two. Later in our meal, I spied a couple at the other end of the bar who did it right: the wife took one bite and immediately ordered a second one so that she wouldn't have to share. This is the second time we've had the tomato salad with olives, shiso, and white balsamic and I can't get over the flavor combination - it's so unexpected and addictive. We can't pass up the broiled oysters with garlic butter, Calabrian chili, and crispy shallots - a dish I was obsessed with the moment I tried it at a pop-up event before the restaurant even existed. Then we had the broiled branzino with lemon, capers, and a watercress salad - again, the only mistake was not ordering two! We were actually down the shore yesterday, but came home because we were craving this dish. We finished off our meal with anchovy toast, which our favorite dessert paired with a crisp Txakolina. It's four pieces of toasted baguette with a generous spread of really good butter topped with one piece of salt-cured anchovy and one boqueron (a pickled anchovy). I can't recommend this dish highly enough, it is perfectly balanced! We love a BYOB, but it is such a luxury that we can order right from our phones at the restaurant from a local wine shop (Lum's Cellars). It's a curated list that has some really fantastic options that all go so well with the cuisine. We started with an Alberiño and then ordered the Txakolina. No notes! We can't wait for our next meal at Perla.

Went today for an early Sunday lunch; lobster rolls were excellent (I believe only offered on…read moreSundays), potato and chorizo dish also very good. BYOB, but they are also affiliated with a local liquor store if you forget to bring something that will bring you a bottle after ordering it online (however a very limited selection of wines) Service was attentive, friendly and personable. I'll definitely be back.

Ou La Restaurant & Bar is the kind of place you want to see succeed. From the moment we walked in,…read morethe service was warm, professional and genuinely attentive. Our entire party wasn't there yet, but we were seated anyway, which I really appreciated. The staff checked in on us consistently without being overbearing, and while we waited for the rest of our party, we were asked if we wanted a drink. That small gesture stood out to me because a lot of restaurants will make you wait until everyone arrives before they even offer you anything. Here, they made us feel welcomed right away. Now, the food. We ordered the steak and eggs, island oxtail burrito, island burger with egg, and I decided to make my own combination. I ordered the Ou La wings and asked if I could get a side of diri jon jon (Haitian black mushroom rice). They were happy to accommodate the request, and everyone enjoyed their meals. One thing that really impressed me was how quickly an issue with the steak was handled. The steak had been ordered medium well, but came out well done. It was mentioned, and once it was brought to the chef's attention, the chef came back just a couple of minutes later with the steak prepared the way it was originally requested. A big deal wasn't made about it, so the fact that he took the initiative to correct it so quickly said a lot to me about how seriously they take their customers and food. And then there was the kremas! I noticed that they had a cocktail called Café Kremas, which is essentially an espresso version of a traditional kremas. It sounded interesting, but I really wanted to try the kremas by itself. I asked, and they were more than happy to accommodate me. Again, that willingness to listen and make the customer happy really stood out. The ambiance is beautiful. Everything feels thoughtfully designed, from the aesthetics to the layout. There's a separate bar area, and you can actually see the chefs working and preparing the food, which adds to the experience. Ou La is doing something special. The food was good, the atmosphere is beautiful, but what really stood out to me was the service. The staff was pleasant, attentive, professional, and clearly focused on making sure the customers were taken care of. If you're thinking about eating at this restaurant, I'm telling you to do it. Support this business and tip well. We need more restaurants that understand great food is only part of the experience. Customer service is important, and Ou La gets that. There is metered parking directly in front of the restaurant. If those spots are full, there's additional parking in the lot behind the restaurant near the church. I would also suggest making a reservation, especially if you're planning to go during a busy brunch or dinner service.

We had the short rib empanadas, which were crispy and fully of meat. They were definitely the highlight of the night! The rasta pasta was good, but it came out warm and with few shrimp. The flavors were still excellent, however. The carrot cake for dessert was moist and not too sweet, which I prefer! The space was also super clean and well maintained. What really disappointed me was the service. We had a reservation, but had to wait to be seated even with plenty of open tables. That's normally not a big deal for us, but we had an event to get to tonight, so we were in more of a rush. Someone came to us to ask what water we wanted after 10 minutes of being sat, after which the hostess came back over to us to apologize that our server hasn't come over yet and asked if we would like water. Much more time passes and someone (still not our server) comes to ask us if everything is alright. We explain that no one has taken our order, which she apologized for and took our order for us. She then had to come back over because she forgot to include what protein we picked for our pasta. Finally, our server came over to us. We explained that we had already ordered. More hiccups continued throughout the night, including a long wait for the check, never being brought a dessert menu after asking, etc. I'm not one to complain about service, I just think they could be more efficient. At the time we arrived, there were only a few other tables seated in our area. It wasn't super busy, and there were a lot of people working. We overheard staff whispering about who was supposed to be taking care of us, and it still took time for someone to come over and help us. I think the staff knew we overheard or were disappointed in the service, because our dessert was free, and we received a bread basket as well. I'd love to give them another chance, just maybe not if I have plans after.
