Going at lunch time in Houston becomes risky business in most restaurants. We arrived go a seat and the nice waitress guided us through the menu and beer selection. Not as extensive a beer selection but I settled on a Harp to join the fish and chips (french fries) with peas and half a lemon and a flavorful tartar sauce - malt vinegar was served with the meal. The Beer showed up and the food was right behind it. If I was a business man sitting at the bar watching the ball game and they were I would be impressed. For a British pub, this is a fun location. For a regular bar, it's not my prefered venue. Then again, I'm not a bar visitor. Take my input with a grain of salt. The only item that we ordered were fish and chips, because we visited after attending a theater show. Late night craving was simply that. Massive pieces of cod fish, though, with standard cut fries. The food here was honestly great, everything we ordered came out, flavorful, and well made (except an undercooked steak, which they re-fired) The drinks and overall pub atmosphere were solid too, which made it even more disappointing that the service really brought the experience down. Our server seemed very inattentive throughout the entire visit. Menus were never cleared from the table, refills were rarely checked on, and we spent a lot of time trying to get basic attention during the meal. It felt more like we were an inconvenience than guests. Good service can completely elevate a place, but unfortunately this experience did the opposite. My favorites entrees here are the chicken tikka masala, bangers n mash, shepherd's pie and fish n chips. Very good desserts, especially that bread pudding. My # 1 dish for the main is still the Chicken Tikka Masala, which I ordered last night. It was nicely savory, creamy, rich, very delicious and absolutely packed with well-cooked chicken chunks. It has a bit more of a curry zing to it rather than the more herby, slightly sweet n tart blend other Indian restaurants have for this dish, but awesome regardless. The rice was loose, warm and so fresh with a mild aroma to it making it an ideal starch like the toasty naan was in a different manner. Staff were efficient & kind despite how busy they were (guess many ppl had the same right idea of coming here to enjoy an easy peasy Christmas meal). I don't know why this place has a 3.8 it is very cute pub with very solid food. Loved all the Christmas decor. It isn't obvious if it is baby friendly or not but it is. At least in terms of them having high chairs. They don't have like crayons or anything but I wasn't expecting them to. Our server was fast friendly and prompt. I got the chicken tikka and my husband got the fish and chips. The tikka came with too much rice and not enough sauce or naan but I didn't regret getting it. If you're looking for a British pub/inspired dive bar, this is it. With a private parking lot that circles around the pub, you'll be sure to find a spot unless it is super crowded on weekends or late night especially when the game is on. The best deal is when you arrive it coincides with happy hour. The burger bun was larger than the beef patty itself and came with lettuce, onion, and tomato. Our server was friendly and efficient, kept checking on out table although the evening was quite busy. Extra condiments like mayo and malt vinegar were brought upon request. The burger bun was nice and buttery, grilled to perfection with ever so slight crispy edges. The beef patty was filling and seasoned well and topped with fresh lettuce, crisp onion, and ripe tomatoes. Washed it all down with a beer while enjoying some football on the screen. My husband and I always come for Christmas Day dinner. Sometimes it chaotic, sometimes not. So the Pros: The return of reservations was amazing. Walked in for our 7 pm reservation and immediately seated as we heard the wait time was 1 hour 34 minutes. Food was delicious. Loved the new choices. My cocktails were delicious. Which leads me to Cons: just after getting seated and before even looking at food or drink menus she tells us everything will be out fast because they're trying to move tables. Great. Exactly what I want to hear sitting at a table I made reservations for. We get drinks, appetizers, food. My husband's first drink was awful (whatever Christmas margarita was on the menu). Next he tries the Rum Reindeer and it's also terrible. I order a Fullers ESB. Few minutes later our waitress comes back to admit she wasn't listening to me at all and doesn't know what I said. Spelled it out: Fuller's Extra Special Bitter. She wanders of and comes back that it's not on the menu. It is online but whatever. Let's make this simple, I'll have what my husband is having. Except the drink I get looks and tastes nothing like his Rum Reindeer. I mean, his tasted nothing like it and mine was perfect. Showed the drinks to the waitress and asked what happened. What happened was there's two bartenders. One who knows if you're using a carbonated liquid you layer it with the alcohol and flavors (this is what you do, perfect, drinkable, carry on) and one puts it all in a shaker and hands it off (it's lighter in color, carbonation is gone, not sweet). When our waitress came back with the new drink she said she watched the person make it and it was the shaken on. Which is not how you make carbonated cocktails. We told her. She said Oh, well I'll make it y'all's way since I'm training bar. Still left with a bad cocktail. We usually stay for desert and a fancy drink, but just wanted to leave. Even asking our waitress for a box and bill we still waited and finally asked someone else for box and bill. Again food and atmosphere and reservations were great. Cocktails and pushy but also not listening waitress was bad. We'll still be back. But for the love of god can someone tell the bartenders to layer carbonated drinks and not shake them. read more

I've been coming here for 20 years and I love it. As an Englishman living in Houston, this place is 100% authentic and true to British culture. It's as close to home as possible but without the jet lag. I enjoy many of my favorite classics from the fish and chips or sausage rolls to the delicious one off dishes they offer like the tandoori chicken quesadillas. They even make their own curries from scratch! Many of the service staff are long time employees here and it's truly a pleasure to see them when I come by. I had the winter salad which was awful. The oil based dressing was crisco like and the pecans were not good. It was very bad. The curried potato salad had raisins . I love raisins but in potato salad? The Guinness stew not so great and their Indian dishes are extremely expensive and small portions but taste ok. The only standout is the fish and chips and the only dish I recommend after several visits. I really like it. It's simple and good. The fries with it are not so good or plentiful. Their desserts are 16.00. We ordered one chocolate cake for the table and each person took one bite and said it was terrible. It was. It was not from a bakery and honestly I have no idea where one would purchase such an awful cake. It wasn't even an ok piece of cake. Why so much unseasoned peas? The chicken pot pie was tasty all though not the typical flavor you expect. It seemed to have some Indian spices in it. The fish was limp. The roast meat was chewy and I genuinely don't understand Yorkshire puddings. I find the texture unpleasant. Overall, the food is not spectacular and overpriced. We have been coming to this place for years. Some of the pics I have taken in the past were reposted on their social media. I knew the former owner, but never ever will we be back. We ordered three of the lunch special and two out of the three had fish that was looked as if someone had taken bites out of both of them. The fish was showing through the batter. The server sent someone to our table with some wild explanation, he offered another piece of fish which we never received. Each plate had less than ten fries (chips) and they piled the peas on top of them. I am in the service industry and I was so confused. The chips (fries) would have been better if they were double fried so they would be crispy on the outside. 3. The peas - Yum! Pretty sure they were garden fresh. Our food came out quite quickly (the place wasn't very busy though). Unfortunately, once out waiter brought out food we didn't see him again during the meal. Not for a drink refill or even so much as to see if the food was okay. After we had finished eating we waited and waited for him to bring the check. I've lived in the area for over 8 or so years and I've always passed by Red Lion Pub. I've heard many good things about the place but just never took the time to check the place out. Finally decided last night, Saturday 7/15/2023 to try out Red Lion Pub. Upon reading the reviews, I had lower and lower expectations due how terrible service was or how mediocre the food would be. But I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. Let's get to the nitty gritty of my experience... Service We got seated on the other side of the restaurant that wasn't as lively and busy. Which could be a good thing if you don't like too much noise but also a bad thing because you're basically forgotten. In our case, we were forgotten. Food; I truly felt like I was on an episode of Master Chef and Hotel Nightmares of how disappointing the food was. Quite below mediocre at best. - Full order Fish and Chips I felt like Gordon Ramsay trying to taste test the famous British staple, fish and chips and end up yelling how flavorless the fish was. Sitting at the table and peeling off the batter to see how unseasoned everything was, truly left me feeling like how Gordon feels when he's served the worst dish of his people. The green peas basically were so flavorless, even Joe Bastianich probably would have given you the stink eye of, "what in the hell were you thinking serving me this". - French Fries (chips) I feel like this needs a category of it's own. The fries were THICK, but not in a good way. When you took your first bite, it was so starchy to the point you kind of wished the fries were cut a little more in half. Your bite was almost as if the fries were not cooked all the way through. They weren't crispy. Just straight up thick cut and undercooked. I literally had to ask my partner if I could sprinkle sat on the fries. It could basically be a meal of it's own but in a bad way. - Mini Cheese Burgers Gordon Ramsay probably would have pulled apart the buns off the burger, face you, and would have been like "YOU'RE AN IDIOT SANDWICH!". Based off how unseasoned the burger patty was. The only good thing was that the buns basically tasted like the hawaiian roll buns on well cooked but unseasoned beef patty. Not even an ounce of salt. Gordon would be like where is the cheese? Roasted Jalepeno Spinach Dip with Toasted Garlic Bread - This was probably the only good thing we ate last night. The only item worth talking about. Although I sort of wished the spinach dip could have had a little bit of a more creamy element in it, instead of sautéed spinach in little heavy cream. The cheesy garlic toast was decent. When it came to get the check, our waitress asked us if we wanted boxes cause I'll tellllll you what. We had one whole fish fillet uneaten, leftover fries, and basically the entire plate of spinach dip and toast. We had so much leftover that we just didn't want to take anything home. Our waitress looked a little disappointed that we didn't want boxes but the whole experience was such a dud. I rarely say this but I definitely would't come back. Our party of 7 had dinner here on 10/17/25. We shared 3 appetizers which were the Poppadom Basket, Vegetable Samosas, and the Charcuterie Board. We enjoyed all 3. The Charcuterie Board is a tad small for the price, so I don't think we'd get that one again. As far as dinner, I got the Fish & Chips special with a side of Curried Potato Salad. I was truly disappointed. The fish had zero salt, therefore had zero flavor. The chips were great though. They were salted perfectly. As far as the potato salad. I was shocked to discover it had raisins. I mean a lot of raisins. Would have been much better without them. As far as the restaurant it was what I'd expect a British pub to look like.
