The restaurant is always nice and clean including the restroom. The restaurant has a lunch option for 2 items for $25. What a steal! Still a big fan of Jonathan's The Rub (East End). This is our go-to spot for dinner in the neighborhood (that's not Tex-Mex, Vietnamese, Thai, or Italian). Think JT's is the only of it's kind in the area (aside from City Cellar). I normally get the wedge or greek salad or some sort of fish. We did try the crab cakes this time, and DO NOT recommend. They are more like hush puppies or fritters... very cornmeal (or bread?) heavy and hardly any crab to be called a "crab cake." I think another review mentioned that, and even our server told us (after the fact) that patrons don't like their crab cakes. Stopped in on a Thursday for steak night and sat at the bar. 4.5 stars, edging down to 4. Steak night itself is a really good deal, and everything we had delivered. The steak was cooked perfectly. It comes sliced with a sauce that's sort of like a nicer version of Heinz 57 -- very good. The smashed potatoes were better than you'd expect, especially if you can get a side of the onion ring sauce to put on them; it sets them off really nicely. The green beans were also very good. We added a small order of onion rings as an extra side, and they were some of the best i have had in a while. They came with some kind of ranch-type sauce that was absolutely phenomenal. I ended up dipping everything in it -- the steak, the potatoes, all of it. I also had their "steak night" old fashioned, which was a solid drink. The steak night plate is a great value. My wife and I actually split it -- it's a larger portion than you'd think, and you can add on shrimp if you want a little more. side note: The croutons on the Caesar salad deserve a mention of their own some of the best I've ever had. I don't know what they do to them, but they're exceptional. As for the spot itself: super nice location, very clean. The bar has a nice feel, with large windows where you can sit and look out to the street. All the food we had was top notch -- I'd give it a full five stars for taste and value. The one thing that knocks it down a little is the service. We sat at the bar, and there were two bartenders. It wasn't especially busy, but it still took a while to get drinks. The bigger hang-up was that I asked two or three small questions about the menu and the bartenders had no idea it was a lot of "I don't know" or "let me check on that," and then they never really got back to me. The Sweet Chili Shrimp appetizer was the highlight of the meal and easily the best thing we ordered. I also tried the Soup de Julio. The flavor was excellent, but the bowl was mostly rice with very little else in it. Our friends ordered a salad and a burger, and both seemed pleased with their meals. I do want to give credit where it's due. Our waitress, **Sheila**, was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service throughout the meal. She was not responsible for what happened next. The total bill for our table was **over $200 including tip**. After spending that kind of money, we asked for a little extra gravy to take home with leftover chicken fried steak because the original serving was light. We weren't asking for a bowl--just a small ramekin. We were told there would be a **$2 charge plus tax**. That may not sound like much, but after spending more than $200, charging a customer extra for a tiny container of gravy felt incredibly petty. It's not the amount of money; it's the message it sends. Good restaurants build loyalty through hospitality, and this felt more like nickel-and-diming customers. Jonathan's is a neighborhood spot for us. We've been here several times and each time is not consistent. We've always dined at the bar with the exception of one time when we sat on the patio. The interior space is nice, clean and has an ample amount of room for large parties. The patio is also a nice size for those beautiful days. The patio visit was probably my better visit as the waitress was accommodating. This particular visit started off on the down slope. There were a lot of people behind the bar doing nothing but chatting and not serving. One young lady continued to look at us while she ran her mouth and polished the drink ware. Finally after 20 min of sitting there, my guest grabbed one of the bar tenders and asked for assistance and then we began rolling. The food has always been "ok". This time we ordered the "Jessie's Salad" and the "Redfish" with a side of steamed Pork dumplings. The salad is huge and filling, the better of the three dishes. The Redfish was overcooked and dry. It also didn't taste like it was fresh fish. The dumplings were decent, nothing to wow you..... I got the classic Gibson and it was also just "ok". The balance was a little off. The restaurant is pretty, with a bar and dining area, and it fits all group sizes. We got our table (for 10 people) and ordered some drinks, I got a Paloma, it's was less than average, definitely didn't like it. We ordered some appetizers, and the meatballs were good as well as the ceviche, which was spicy since comes with habanero. Then we ordered the main entrees, I ordered the Jessie Salad and my friend got the Ribeye, my salad was ok, nothing extraordinary, but the ribeye was definitely not good, not tender at all, rubbery-hard meat. I will say that the Brussels sprouts are good and the tuna is good as well. And for dessert tres leches for the bday boy, we all tried it and it was good. I decided to sit at the bar instead of waiting. The Thursday night steak special goes for $35 and you get a small salad, 14oz New York strip, potatoes, and green beans. The presentation is amazing! The steak was cook to order and the J1 sauce complements it very well. The potatoes are cooked perfectly and seasoned very generously. The greens beans came off a little bland and the salad was just a regular salad. You definitely get a great amount of food for the price. We met up with some good friends for a steak night. This was my first time to visit any of their locations. Driving up, it looked very fresh for this area of OG food joints. You get an option of house or Caesar salad, or an option to upgrade to their wedge for +$3. The steak are sous vide to your preference, the medium rare was perfect. Not gonna lie, the potatoes were the show stoppers of this meal. Don't get me wrong, the steak was good too. But the potatoes were magnificent. It was a sweeter variant but still smooth and tasty. Parking was pretty easy, which is odd in that area. If you've been to ninfas you understand. We ordered the ceviche as our app and it sadly was the least favorite item we ordered. It was extremely spicy even though there were no jalapeños in it. We had two shrimp numbers, a sweet chili and bbq. Surprisingly the bbq version packed some fire with sriracha notes in the sauce. Steak night is Thursday and when in Rome...steak arrived sliced with crispy smashed potatoes and for me mushrooms (not the standard side on the special but they want you to have what you want). I booked a reservation online for a table of four a few days in advance for Father's Day. I told my family to arrive at the restaurant early, as I would be showing up late, to ensure we could secure our table. When I arrived, I was a bit surprised to see that they were still waiting. My family informed me that the staff was still preparing our table as they were already waiting for 20 minutes. I decided to give it about 10 more minutes before walking up to the host and asking to be seated for our reservation. Surprisingly, we were seated immediately. At first, we tried to be understanding, especially since the front half of the restaurant looked packed. But once we walked past the barricade, we noticed the restaurant was practically empty. Oddly, we were seated at a small corner table next to the bathroom and a large party table -- we would've been completely squished! We later realized there were other available tables, and when we asked to move, the staff accommodated our request without issue. Isn't it strange that we were originally seated in such an inconvenient spot? I understand they may have been preparing for a large party in advance, but I found it frustrating that, even with a reservation, walk-in guests were seated before us. (I overheard them asking for a table without mentioning a reservation.) Just an excellent restaurant. Food, value, service. Diverse menu. Garlic knots a great starter. The pictured scampi was yummy, so was the mango salmon my hubby had. If you like coconut, their cream pie is better than the other 437 (LOL) I have tasted. Perfect flaky crust! The nutella cheesecake also outstanding. Located in EaDo on Navigation opposite of Ninfa's and El Tiempo. Plenty of parking up front and a very nice and new interior. I've been to their Memorial location previously and the mood / setting is definitely around the same level; casual fancy. The sweet chili shrimp were ordered for the appetizer; real, good sized shrimp, and had a nice crust and sauce of pair. Got the pecan crusted trout for my main; it was probably the thinnest trout piece that I've ever had at a restaurant. The sauce to pair was a bit bland but there was barely any meat to the filet, and thus, it broke apart when you try to separate the meat from the skin of the fish. A bit of a miss for me on the entree but eager to try out some of their options in the future. read more
