Located in downtown Red Lodge, this Cafe affords a pretty typical menu. Breakfast is served all day. We came in at noon and the place was only half full. My wife and I decided to split a double patty melt and an order of onion rings. The patty melt was cooked to a medium well. It had grilled onions and came with a side of pickles. The marbled rye was grilled to a toasty crisp and the cheese was melted and gooey. The onion rings were deep fried to a light golden brown and were not oily. Stopped in for breakfast because it looked like the kind of cozy local café everyone loves and I was right! From the moment I walked in, the service was warm and welcoming. The menu offered a nice variety, and thanks to my server's suggestion, I ordered the steak and eggs breakfast with sourdough toast and an amazing cup of coffee . The Red Lodge Cafe, with its bright neon sign, has welcomed locals and travelers for decades. My first visit came almost four decades ago, and today's straight forward breakfast delivered as in years past. My go-to: bacon well done, wheat toast, eggs, hash downs. And I got that value and quality today. The interior has a western theme with orals painted by a Mr. Salo in 1967. The service is also traditional western: friendly, prompt, even when busy and obviously short staffed. Patrons have to adjust to the new restaurant reality: everyone is in a rush to go out in these post vaccination times but people--restaurants need time to gear up and staff up for the onslaught. Especially in a national park gateway town like Red Lodge. Be patient, give them a break and tip handsomely the staff busting their butts to get their meals. The cafe owner has just posted a sign to sale. Geez I hope this place doesnt go the way of too many other places in Red Lodge. In ten years it has changed a lot--let's keep some traditional western cafes. read more

I have eaten at the RedLodge Cafe since the 1960s. I remember a good hamburger and fries, red booths under murals of the Beartooth mountains and a Wilcoxsen's ice cream bar with every kids meal. It was a fav stop during family ski trips to RedLodge Mountain. It is still a great choice. Solid breakfasts and hearty burgers, tho I'm not sure about the ice cream bars. The booths are gone, but the murals and the old tin ceiling are still here. We love this place. read more

Not the best, did not have many vegetarian friendly options. However, the crispy grilled cheese was a totally new experience to me. Grilled cheese sandwich with mayo, covered in breadcrumbs, and deep fried. I will probably never eat that sandwich again in my life (here or elsewhere) because it was so heavy, but I will never forget my experience here. The best way I can think of to sample the character of a small town is to stop by and enjoy breakfast with the locals at a mom-and-pop diner or coffee shop. Unlike eating at a chain restaurant, which are mostly identical, when you dine locally, you get to mingle with the local residents, and enjoy the variety of cuisine that makes the town thrive. In Red Lodge, Montana, good luck on finding a chain restaurant, but luck is on your side, as you'll find an amazing dining experience awaits you at Red Lodge Cafe. My visit actually happened a couple years ago, and I'm finally getting around to posting on Yelp. Sorry for the delay... The dining room is quite large, and features all tables, and is quite rustic in character, in fitting with the small town of Red Lodge. There are murals on each wall, and the kitchen to the rear of the restaurant. I noted that all of the diners appeared to be locals, despite the fact that Red Lodge is on Highway 212, which is a major route from Billings to Yellowstone National Park. Red Lodge Cafe is serious about breakfast, as the breakfast menu is good all day. The menu offers something for every taste. As I was looking at the menu, my friendly server Lynn let me know that today's special was prime rib, cooked any way I want it, and eggs for $12.25. OK, count me in! My delicious prime rib breakfast arrived on two plates. Trust me, it tasted even better than it looked. The two eggs over easy that I ordered were cooked separately, which I don't ever recall seeing in the 60+ years I've been enjoying eggs prepared this way for my breakfast. When Lynn mentioned the "Prime Rib Breakfast Special," not on the menu, I could not resist ordering it, as it had probably been three years or so since I'd enjoyed prime rib for breakfast. At $12.25, it wasn't a bargain, but you definitely got what you ordered: A delicious breakfast. I didn't have to wait very long, as my breakfast arrived about 15 minutes after ordering. The prime rib was so tender that I didn't need the knife to cut it, as the knife served as a decoration. I ordered my prime rib cooked medium, and it arrived perfectly cooked, juicy, tender, and just a little pink, exactly the way I like it. The eggs, hash brown potatoes and the toast were cooked perfectly. This is one of the best breakfasts that I've enjoyed in a long time! Rustic dining, in a rustic, mountain town is found at Red Lodge Cafe. The food is delicious, the staff, and local diners are friendly, and the breakfast experience makes you want to return to the mountains of south-central Montana, and the Red Lodge Cafe. read more

Stopped in around 10 this morning. Maybe four tables occupied. Server at the front desk didn't even acknowledge us. After being ignored for a minute, we asked if we could seat ourselves. She begrudgingly told us yes and groused about something under her breath. We took our seats and after a few minutes she bright menus which she quite literally threw on the table and left at a breakneck speed. No offer if water, drinks...anything. We sat there as a couple came in, was seated and given water, coffee and menus. Sat a little longer...still ignored. Finally decided we'd had enough and got up and left. If you don't want customers, lock your doors. We walked down to Marlo's in the Pollard Hotel where we were treated great and our money spent just fine. Won't go back to the Red Lodge Cafe. Ate there twice recently while visiting family in the area. Portions are large and food is tasty. We all had the rib steak one evening for dinner and it was excellent. It was served on a hot platter Ruth Chis style. A real value. The dinner rolls are very good. The vegetable sides are reminiscent of a Foster's Ale "salad" The dinner salads in the geographical area tend to have a little less preparation ( parts are not cut into as small of pieces) They have wonderful pies prepared by a local lady. Prices are extremely reasonable. If you are looking for trendy or upscale you will be disappointed. If you are looking for comfort foot this is your place. read more

We visited when we came to Montana to visit my sister and her family. Our party of 11 had to wait for a little while, which is understandable. Our waitress set the tone as we were seated by looking at me and saying, "Didn't you eat already?" (It turns out that there was someone else in the restaurant wearing the same shirt.) Throughout our meal, she traded quips with us, taking them as well as she gave them. The best was when my son and nephew got into a fry-stealing fight, and my nephew attempted to defend his fries with a fork. The waitress walked up, whacked my nephew over the head with a menu, and deadpanned, "Quit forking around." She got an extra tip. I had the buffalo burger with potato salad. It was grilled nicely, with a good flavor, and a delightful multigrain bun. The potato salad was a little heavy on the onion, but I'm a potato salad snob. Two of my kids ordered pancakes. They were massive and, I'm told, delicious. If you want something in the way of an adult beverage, the lounge next door can serve you and put it on your bill. I had a Red Lodge Ale heffevisen that was tasty, but overall pretty average for $4. I would return for sure, and one day I'll have breakfast here. read more

We visited the restaurant during the Beartooth Bike Rally and had a good experience. I am certain that the waitress was very tired, as all the restaurants in town were busy and had help wanted signs. Breakfast is delicious! We had pancakes and bacon and eggs, hash browns, bacon toast x 2. The Cafe was packed with a wide array of clientele ranging from Cowboys (yup real actual Montana Cowboys), college kids, hippies, adventure seekers, skiers (yes in late June) and families. It's low frills yet good cafe food! Our server was a local from Bear Creek and completely added to the experience...she was delightful in a way that can be only described as "Montana" and was filling me in on the local scoop (since I hadn't been to Red Lodge since 1987). For the last 4 years of our 20 years going to Red Lodge, once a month we meet with a couple who is also a retired Army Veteran and it has down home cooking thru out the year. Bad, bad, bad. We stopped in for lunch. 'Wait to be seated'' means exactly that. Everyone walks by, and not even a word. The food was not worth the wait. They advertised a $19 giant Chicken Fried Steak, so I figured CFS must be a house specialty. Wrong. It tasted like vegetable oil. I was hungry, so I ate about a third. My wife ordered the hot turkey sandwich. Lunch meat on plain white bread with canned gravy. We've been touring Montana for the past few weeks. This is the worst meal we had. I ate breakfast here 4 mornings straight while skiing this spring! Their portions are big enough to fill a hungry skier. Pancakes are awesome, huge and fluffy. My favorite meal was the local special which was, biscuits and gravy on top of hash browns and fried eggs. It is basically one big plate of my favorite breakfast foods. They waitresses are super friendly, fast, and helpful. You walk in, sit down and they pour your coffee right away without waiting for you to ask, and did I say you can get all the coffee you want for only $.99! That is a deal! Oh and better yet, they have the oldies rock and roll station playing on the radio! This is the best breakfast in town prefect way to start the mornings before a day on the slopes. read more

We always give restaurants two chances before we review (good bad or indifferent). The food here is GREAT, the staff is horrible. They are all amazingly friendly and pleasant, but the entire cafe seems to be ran with a bit of incompetence and disorder. A bit frustrating that there is always open tables, but a massive line outside. When the waitstaff gets to the list, they ask the opinions of the guest to which where they could fit parties. That dialogue should be kept to themselves. Again, good food but the staff seems a bit overwhelmed or inexperienced. As often as we visit red lodge, we'll probably come back since there are so few options and the the staff is friendly. But the owner needs to step up and organize this place better, hire dedicated bus boys and a dedicated host. The wait staff is overworked. read more

Had breakfast here while in town. I had the huevos rancheros which was actually quite good however the side of fruit I ordered had a shriveled moldy apple right on the top. I don't see how they could have missed that. Also my friend ordered the french toast special for $8 and change and he was not impressed with the small size of the breakfast considering the price.
