We had our order delivered and the food arrived promptly and was still hot. We ordered aloo chana papdi chaat, palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, lamb biryani, kulcha, naan and samosa. Everything was delicious, the portion sizes were generous and unlike many other spots, you don't have to order rice separately. It came with the meal. The yogurt sauce for the biryani was especially tasty. We ordered the tikka masala medium spice and we will prob be sticking to mild from now on but it wasn't so spicy that we couldn't enjoy it. The three stars isn't for the food but for the creepy guy who works there. I had ordered food for delivery from them on multiple occasions and it was the same guy who delivered it each time. The last time I ordered, he delivered it and called me the next day asking me how the food was and blah blah. I found it very weird and creepy. No one calls and asks about your experience especially from their personal phone. I would've been ok if he had done that from the business phone and conducted in a professional manner. Fans of Indian food: Red Pepper in Scotch Plains is fantastic - don't let the strip mall locale fool you! Service is great, restaurant is super clean, and the food is amazing. Easily beats out the pricier, snobbier joints we've tried nearby. Our waiter was attentive, very kind, and gave us no problem when we asked for extra sauce. I should also mention we brought a very cranky baby with us, and both our waiter and the staff couldn't have been any friendlier. . .despite the slew of Cheerios my son threw on the floor! It's BYO, and there's a liquor store located conveniently next door. They gave me lots of attitude and when I tried to explain to them why I was calling, they hung up on me. I had to call back again and they ultimately did not help me resolve the issue. They get a three from me because the delivery takes forever (45-60 minutes) and the folks who take the orders on the phone are so incredibly rude and short every time I call. It transported me back to the best of the garden restaurants which line the highways of the punjab. I haven't had North Indian food this good since I left India. I ordered extra spicy and it was perfect. Spices, aromatics, and fresh veggies were perfectly balanced with the creamy sweet and savory of the sauce and proteins. Unfortunately the Chole Bhatura was not quite as good. It was a little too oily without any of the rich tanginess I expect from Chole. The Bhatura was a little to bready and not sweet enough. I've eaten from here twice over the last week. Yeah. It's THAT good. The BEST I have eaten in NJ, so far. The CTM is an obvious draw here since it's so damn good, but other things are amazing as well. I've had Baygnan Bharta, which is tandori roasted eggplant, mashed with tomatoes/onions and mildly spiced. It was light, but very delicious. I really enjoyed the Malai Kofta, which are veg. & cheese croquettes in a mild creamy yellow sauce...a very tasty and nice alternative to meat. We also had and liked a few of the breads, naan being the best, but the onion kulcha, roti were good as well. The Raita and Mango Lassi are top-notch. I also tried the Coconut Soup, which was sweet (and I personally liked), and because of this, might taste a little out of the ordinary for a "traditional" soup. The menu is nicely varied, and I can't wait to try more things in the future. The only thing I didn't like is that they only give you one container of rice for someone ordering two entrees. I feel each entree should receive it's own rice, you know? Plus, they are frugal as well with condiments, such as the red onion, coriander/cilantro sauce and brown chutney sauce. They will only give you one small container of each, (if you get them all, which is not always the case) and no papadums at all, which usually is provided by Indian restaurants when you get take out. *BYOB* Red Pepper was a venture my wife and I stumbled upon randomly on a weekend evening. She was craving Indian (pregnancy), and I love it regardless - so we'd decided to give RP a shot. We'd been trying out a lot of the Indian spots around us, and RP hadn't been attacked yet. +Ambiance RP has a very traditional, old-school look to it, which I like a lot. I'm not a big fan of modernized ethnic places for dining - keeping true to its roots does RP well. +Appetizer Garlic naan. Absolutely delicious. RP had some great, classic Indian sauces to accompany the naan (my favorite being the sweet, dark-colored dip). Good portion size, and served hot. +Entree Lamb Tikka Masala - cooked lamb in a creamy sauce with eastern spices. I ventured away from my usual Lamb Vindaloo to try something different, and I'm glad I did. The creamy sauce was fantastic from RP (almost vodka sauce-ESQUE, a bit sweeter), and the chunks of lamb were well-done. My only complaint was that there wasn't enough lamb! I believe I got about five chunks. The rice was done beautifully - spicy and sweet, hot, and a perfect companion for the cooked lamb. I even ended up dipping the naan in the creamy sauce as well - lovely. Overall, one of our better local experiences with Indian cuisine. It's close (but not besting) Star of India in Kenilworth, but RP may be a solid #2 in the area. read more

I never did get to try the food here but the one star review is for the shocking service. It would be zero stars if Yelp allowed it. I walked in to an empty restaurant with two waiters. One who meandered about robotically doing nothing and another harried gentleman who was on the phone taking takeout orders. Ready to order, I waited at my booth for 20 minutes.... no water, no waiters! One is busy running around taking takeout orders. He strides by me a couple of times and studiously ignores me. The other guy wanders around aimlessly. Finally the harried guy shows up and starts to take my order. The phone rings and he stops me mid-order to answer it, and begins to take another takeout order!! I walk out ruing the 20 minutes of my life I'll never recover. I had a perfectly pleasant meal at the Thai restaurant a few doors down. Dear owner, if you're reading this and you care, perhaps you can tell your staff to prioritize guests who are actually *in* the restaurant.
