My husband and I were in Mineral Point for the weekend and decided on the Red Rooster Cafe for breakfast. The waitress happily allowed us to make some substitutions to our orders, kept my coffee cup full and the food was all really good. This place is exactly what it looks like... a hole in the wall diner with decent food. Everyone who worked there was really nice and the bathroom was incredibly clean. It was kind of like a Grandma's house in the country complete with knick-knacks. This place takes their roosters seriously. I had the 2 egg breakfast with bacon and toast and it was fine. I loved that I could have 2 cups of tea for $1.50. That would cost me $4 in Chicago which is a total rip off and why I make my own tea at home and work. Our party of six all had the individual pastes with a side of coleslaw. The pasties were fine but the dining experience could be enhanced if they prepared a homemade version of chili sauce. The Heinz version is much like Ketchup with a different label. The facility brings back days of yesterday with it's high ceilings of metal. read more

Would have liked to have tried this place, but no one acknowledged me and my friend when we sat down at the counter. After a few minutes, a server literally walked past us to put menus away right by us, and my friend asked her if we could get some menus. The server very coldly said, "Just a minute," and turned her back to wait on another customer. Not sure why she couldn't take three seconds to pass us the menus, but we decided with an attitude like that we weren't interested in staying. read more

Cool little downtown diner. Went there for breakfast on a Saturday. The service was meh. When we arrived the place was about 2/3s full and none of the empty tables had been cleaned off. Had to wait awhile for the table to be cleaned and waited even longer for coffee and to order. The staff were friendly, just not enough staff. One in the kitchen and one waiting tables. Great pasty and 'figgyhobin'. Cute little diner style atmosphere with homemade specials daily. I have had pasties before (although I have never had it pan-style before today) it was very filling & tasted great with the chili sauce. My iced tea was very strong, and I enjoyed it. The figgy haben desert reminded me of Kringle topped with cream and some caramel) although it was on the smaller side and I shared with my wife it was delicious. Everything priced reasonably. The meat inside the pasty was extraordinarily dry and under seasoned. Our waitress was working the cash register and immediately following, used her hands to put cherries on our malts. The interior is in desperate need of a makeover. The cook forgot to add fries to my daughter's hot dog order. The sign in the front window says, "Fresh Lemonade." My daughter received lemonade in a can. When asked about that the waitress said, "Oh, we're out." The whole place needs a kick in the ass. I gew up in this little town and the Rooster was practically a weekly stop for my family. The building is ancient with a diner like feel and the food is always basic but always good. Tourists order the pasties. read more

I ate here for lunch. I ordered a lemonade and chef salad. The salad was the worst salad I've ever had. The lettuce was literally not green. My lettuce was white, nearly brown. I saw another guys come out the same way. It was something I would be embarrassed to serve. It was incredibly overpriced for some bad lettuce, some cheap pieces of ham and shredded cheese. read more

Great little diner to go to on our way home from a long rafting and camping weekend. Large portions for cheap. My husband had the biscuits and gravy which were great. I had a grilled cheese, my fries were pretty over cooked, but that was the only complaint within out 8 person meal. Our waitress was extremely friendly and accomodating as well. read more

We weren't blown away by the food there by any means, but we were very hungry after a long drive and the food was decent. I suspect their breakfasts are their best feature, but we were there near closing time and weren't up for breakfast food. Walked in and waited....waitresses walked by. The waitress at the counter saw us....but not one employee acknowledged us. Dirty dishes sitting at the counter and no effort to clear a spot. Seriously horrible customer service so after a period of time we just walked out. Again, unacknowledged as we left. I would eat there if it were free. read more

I would give this place a 5 for atmosphere and uniqueness, and a 3 for food. It was a really cute diner, with throwbacks to mining and Cornish culture. However, the pasties were pretty bland and had quite a bit of dough. I definitely would try it if you're in town. If you are not familiar with what a pasty should be, you might be pleased. If you are, don't expect one of the better pasties of your life. read more

Fantastic, old school diner. Very old, limited menu, but great food. Very comfy and family-like. My family and I had a great breakfast, and I came back for the pasty, which was very good. A little dry, and it needed a shot of salt and pepper, but overall a very good effort. Heck, I bought 3 frozen ones to take back home with me! Service here, as in all of Mineral Point was very good. My father-in-law started every morning at the Red Rooster, when he lived in Mineral Point 30 or 40-some years ago. All it was then was just a little hole-in-the-wall where local guys could drink coffee and discuss whatever it is local guys talk about. So, in honor of my late father-in-law, I'll give this place five stars. Who cares if the eggs are hard or there's squash in the scramble? There are spirits there that are worthy of 5 stars and more. read more

We stayed at The Mineral Point Hotel for a lovely weekend. Since they don't serve breakfast my husband went out looking for a cup of milk and something to go with it. He went to The Red Rooster and ordered a tea biscuit and a cup of milk. The bill was $4.75. He was confused so he asked the cost of each item. They had charged him $3.50 for the cup of milk. What???? It's not like we're in Manhattan here. Next time we'll skip the kitschy Red Rooster and go someplace that's not so precious. read more

When you walk in this restaurant you are bombarded with articles and honorable mentions that this restaurant has had over the years.. the key word here is HAD. Whatever they had in the past is sadly lost now. We had a simple breakfast eggs over medium and a vegetable scramble. It's hard to mess up eggs and they did.. the eggs were brown and on the verge of 'burnt', the toast was greasy and burnt, and the vegetables in the scramble were unevenly cut and cooked. My veggie scramble has 1 chunk of yellow squash that was about 1 1/2 inches think and then 1 very thin slice of zucchini, a half of a mushroom and one tomato. It's really sad that a place that was once so great has taken such a bad turn. read more

We were passing through Mineral Point and looking for a late breakfast. We saw the Red Rooster and decided to stop. Excellent breakfast--my husband said his Eggs Benedict was the best he's had in a LONG time. I love the Rooster! Being a transplant to Mineral Point, the Red Rooster has all the charm and local flavor one could ask for in a little diner downtown! Cornish fare and yummy breakfasts in a great atmosphere (although it probably doesn't hurt that I'm partial to roosters)! It is still a smoking environment, however. I forget that because I fell in love with this place as a smoker. Now, as a non-smoker with kids, it can be less appealing. A great place for an ice cream treat after school! read more

Not the same food what it used to be.Pasty was pale,meat inside hard ground beef ,too salty . Potatoes were without salt and stuffing made weird combination.All togheter it was blend i should say tasteless.Bread pudding did not dissapoint. read more
