We enjoyed our stop at Red Rooster. We started with coffees, the strawberry-rhubarb pie (for my wife), and the saffron bread, which was kind of a soda bread but really loaded with saffron - great! I wanted to like this but couldn't. At the moment I walked in the door, I was met by a surly woman at the counter. It must have been a bad day for her. She was just gruff and mean. The place looks cute inside. I saw a lot of food that probably was good but I decided to have their specialty, the pasty. I've had them at many places and have enjoyed them. This is by far the worst one I've ever had in my life. Everything about it was bad. I would give this place another try but I'd never order that again. And I hope I would never see that woman again. Went here on a Sunday morning for brunch and we were kind of surprised that it wasn't busier. We took a spot at the counter and the waitress was quick to bring us placemats, silverware, menus, and get our drink order. I had a craving for pancakes and the ones here were perfect for satisfying that craving. They were light and fluffy and absorbed the maple syrup nicely! Definitely would recommend. My friend got the pan style Cornish pasty and said it was pretty good. It definitely helped to add some hot sauce though. We also split a cinnamon roll. We sat right next to them at the counter and they just looked too good to pass up. The waitress even heated it up a little for us so it was nice and soft with a melty frosting. Whilst in Mineral Point I learned that there's a strong affiliation with Cornwall and many of the residents have Cornish ancestors. They're even twinned with a town in Cornwall. I didn't have plans to get anything to eat here, but walking around I saw that the Red Rooster Cafe has a pasty of the day. I'm not sure if it's different or the same each day, but I decided to give it a try. They'll heat them up. The server offered me that option, and I would have taken for granted that it would be heated so I'm glad she did! I didn't have a place to heat it up since I was staying in a hotel. But it makes sense that they offer them with re-heating instructions as well. This pasty was HUGE; it could easily be split by a couple people or used for a couple meals. It was okay. I wouldn't have minded if it had some spices added--even just salt and pepper. But it was well cooked, and the vegetables were perfect--potato and maybe squash or sweet potato, I'm not sure. Perfectly tender and a nice complement to the huge amount of meat in the pasty. It's a good value item. I am curious what their other pasties of the day are! This place very much has an old-school diner vibe, and they have the huge counter to prove it. There's outdoor seating as well. A must try when in Mineral Point or even just stopping through. Dig into an authentic Cornish dish like pasty and figgyhobbin. They even offer vegetarian pasty - best with hot sauce but some prefer ketchup. Portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. You can also get breakfast here including huge cinnamon rolls. Located downtown Mineral Point, the building is gorgeous. The entire town feels like a time capsule, and it's very pretty. This little mom and pop diner is adorable, and decorated with items dedicated to the town as well as the restaurant's success over the years. I was mainly drawn to Red Rooster Cafe for their daily pasties, but had breakfast, so I took some frozen pasties home with me. The fare was pretty standard as far as breakfast items go, but it was good. I wouldn't say it is a place I will be itching to come back to, but there aren't too many places around the area with it being a small town. I think the biggest missing ingredient is seasoning, and that goes for the pasties as well. The pasties were flaky and good, but pretty bland as far as flavor. Reminiscing on a great trip to a small town diner- and my first "Poor Man's Bloody"! What makes it a Poor Man's Bloody? Well, it's made with beer instead of vodka - basically a Michelada. At the Red Rooster Cafe situated in the heart of Mineral Point, you can get theirs for $6.50 and it comes topped with a pickle and garlic-stuffed olive. This one was spicy, but you could definitely taste the beer too. You all know I'm not the biggest beer fan, but this was pretty good! We were camping nearby and decided to go out for lunch. We chose this restaurant because they served Cornish Pasty. My hubby is British and it was always a favorite. He ordered the traditional and I ordered the slice. They were both horrible. My veggies were hard (potato, rutabaga and carrots) and my meat was very chewy. My husband's was a bit better but neither one had any seasoning whatsoever. They were very bland. I ate less than half. The waitress asked how our meals were and when I said the vegetables were hard she said that's hire they make it there and offered to reheat the dish. I declined. I then ordered a piece of the pie special and it was also very disappointing. Would NOT recommend this place. Worst part was we spent $44 for an awful lunch. read more

Heard about this wonderful place and its unique Cornish specialties and so glad that I stopped and enjoyed the experience of this 40+ year old restaurant! Mineral Point is located in southwestern Wisconsin, about 45 minutes from Dubuque (40 miles) and Madison (50 miles), at exits 37 (westbound) or 40 (eastbound) on US Highway 18/151. It's worth getting off the highway to visit this small town that features 19th Century architecture. This downtown diner has both counter and booth seating. I grabbed a booth and my server, Tammy, was terrific, patient, and informational about their full menu of sandwiches, daily specials, and pies. But I came for the figgy hobbin and pasties, and they were amazingly good. It was the first time that I had eaten either one, and I couldn't believe how tasty they were. I ate the pasty as the main course with the figgy hobbin (added some ice cream) as dessert. Yes, please. I did a little research before visiting Mineral Point, and this café popped up several times in my research. There is a lot of history behind it and the current café name goes back to 1972, and currently owned by the daughter of the cafe's founders, which is cool. It has a small town diner feel, which I found charming and my server was very warm and friendly and indicated she just started working there a couple of weeks prior. I was at the Red Rooster for two reasons: the pasty and the Figgy Hobbin. I've had pasties before a couple of times. In fact Reynold's pasties, which you may have seen in your grocer's freezer, has a store in Milwaukee. I've never been a fan of the flavor of a pasty. I find them mostly bland and reliant on a condiment for flavor. Since that has always been the case, I assume that is the intended flavor. I don't know. At Red Rooster, you can order the pasty as an enclosed pastry or as a slice from a pan. I think I liked the pan style slice a little better, but really, they two versions tasted the same to me. They offer ketchup or Chili Sauce, but I recommend asking for the beef gravy, which my server also offered as an option, and I appreciated it. The Figgy Hobbin was something I never had nor heard of before. It is also Cornish in origin. One of the many articles on the wall described it as a dessert with pastry, raisins, nuts, brown sugar and caramel sauce. Then it's topped with ice cream or whipped cream. It wasn't overly sweet, and I enjoyed it. This is the kind of experience I expect in a small town diner, so my expectations were met and maybe even exceeded a bit. Just now reviewing my visit of a few months back. Friendly little place with excellent food at a fair price. We both had the pasties. My side was spaghetti squash with a brown sugar type glaze. My dining partner had crab macaroni salad as a side. The food was excellent! The pasties were the best I've ever tasted. Came with a slice of what definitely tasted like a fresh tomato. No idea where that's found in November! My spaghetti squash was a pure delight. My dining partner seemed to enjoy all things too. Waitress was extremely nice, visit pleasant. I came here with a bunch of my family that live in Mineral Point. I saw that pasty was on the menu so I figured I'd get it since I know I love pasty and when my relatives give me frozen pasty from the town, its always very good. Its also not something I can get very often anywhere else. I was very disappointed. It was obvious the pasty was just refrigerated and then heated up in a microwave when served. Soggy bland crust, hot in the center but cold outside. I was expecting it to at least be put in a convection oven to get the nice crispy flaky crust I expect from a pasty. Over priced, couldn't even eat the entree (pasty) it was so horribly dry and had potatoes with about a table spoon of meat. No words (again!) So asked at the desk for a manager and she brought me more... About a cup- of potatoes! If they can't afford beef for inside them don't advertise it as a beef pasty. Call it what it is - beef flavored. We sat for a good 10-15 minutes with a waitress who went to the table next to us 3 times without acknowledging us. Went to the front desk to ask if we were supposed to order there. She came with menus, brought our salad with the entree and never checked in. Had to go to the desk to get our check, too. When we were looking around for a good place for brunch, this diner kept popping up. Being someone who likes to eat local as much as possible, I was excited to try the Cornish pasty and Figgy Hobbin. My dining partner and I were greeted immediately and made welcome. As we looked over the menu, the server mentioned that all menu items are available, not just breakfast. We ordered a pasty (the two-crust variety, not the individual hand pie) and a plate of corned beef hash and eggs. As we waited, several customers who had arrived after us received their orders, finished up and left the diner. Just as we were about to ask what the delay was, the server came by to tell us that the pasty would be out of the oven shortly. Our food arrived about an hour after we sat down. It certainly would have been nice to know that the pan of pasty had not been made yet, and would take 45 minutes to cook. The hash was the canned variety with the addition of some green pepper, and while it was hot, it was also burnt. The eggs were fine but getting cold by the time I was served. The pasty was also a disappointment. The bottom crust was soggy and the top crust wasn't quite cooked through. The filling was under seasoned and very dry. We were disappointed and behind schedule by the time we finished our meal, so we skipped the Figgy Hobbin. I'm giving three stars because the diner itself is adorable and just the kind of place I look for in small towns. Several diners obviously knew one another and everyone checked in with the servers and cooks about how their families were doing. Obviously, this diner plays a big role in this community, and that is heartening. Stopped in for a light lunch and a taste of Cornish food. The ambiance was fun (the wallpaper is a little much perhaps), and the service was friendly and fast. My wife and I got a half of a pastie and a veggie, and a figgybottom for dessert. Her veggie was a 'wilted salad' she really liked, mine was cole slaw that was better than grocery store but nothing to brag about. The pastie was, to be honest, pretty bland. Nice flaky crust stuffed with probably boiled potatoes and some sort of probably ground beef. By itself, it was bland- are the taste buds of Cornish miners damaged by the dust and stuff in the mines? To be fair, pasties are meant to be cheap, easy to make, and hearty, not a gourmet repast. The figgybottom was tastier and interesting- it is a raisin/walnut filled pastie served with caramel sauce and whipped cream. In all the years I have been alive, I have never actually eaten a pasty. I've heard and read about them though. So when I heard there was a place in Mineral Point I had to go. Red Rooster is an anachronistic diner. 40 years of service to the community. I would have guessed the number to be even higher. The Pasty I was served had beef and various vegetables (including rutabaga) in a kind of puff pastry envelope. Having never had one before, its easy to say this is the best pasty I have ever eaten. But seriously, it tasted really good. For dessert my wife and I split a "Figgy Hobbin". It was a pastry wrapped around a mixture of nuts and raisins with a caramel sauce sauce topping and a dollop of whipped cream. Why oh why did I ever say I'd share it? read more
