ROUTE 77 , formerly Red Rooster, in Ceresco. Holy cow! I walked in but now after eating I need a wheelchair! Where do I start... we ordered the Rueben dip as an appetizer and let me tell you. Chunks of corned beef mixed with deliciousness in every bite! Wowza! Even the table next to us heard us and ordered it! Loved it too! Then my hubbs ordered the Corned beef and Cabbage. Beautifully plated and they are not stingy! I ordered the Roast beef and I think I had a half a cow! And the flavors were explosive and it's not even the Fourth! Then we Had to get the cake-Guinness Chocolate Cake w/ Bailey's Irish Cream Frosting! It's a dense, semi sweet, not too much frosting indulgence of a cake. I recommend you wear your "fat pants". Red Rooster was one of our favorite restaurants so we decided to give the new owners and Route 77 a try. Red Rooster was rated by Yelp a year ago as having the best fried chicken in Nebraska. It was really that good! So I thought the best test of the new restaurant would be the fried chicken. I ordered the 4 piece with mashed potatoes and white gravy. Unfortunately it was disappointing. The breading was off and it was way too salty. On this night it was NOT the best fried chicken in Nebraska. The homemade white gravy was over-salted and tasted out of a jar, unlike the delicious homemade gravy Ron made when it was Red Rooster. Two people at our table said the same about the meatloaf and dark gravy. The gravy was also over-salted and it didn't taste homemade. Service was unusually clunky and we only saw one regular server. Everyone else was new. The decor in the Restaurant was different too. Not bad but just different. I'm hoping this was a one off experience because we really liked the Red Rooster. I'm not sure why the new owners of Route 77 made so many changes to a successful restaurant that was already working well. I hope they figure it out. The "legend" in this establishment is the owner/manager Ron Tegtmeier. He has opened numerous restaurants in various locations and has been extremely successful with each of them. Why? Ron has the keys to running a great restaurant in his DNA. 1) Knows and loves good food; 2) Truly has the gift of hospitality; 3) Has a magnetic personality that attracts top quality staff and connects with customers. You can't teach this...it's just part of some people, and Ron is one of them! We arrived at 5:35 pm on a Saturday night in January. They open at 5:00, in the little town of Ceresco, Nebraska. The place was packed and we had a 30-45 minute wait ahead of us. We talked about going somewhere else to avoid the wait...but when you feel the vibe, see the food rolling out of the kitchen, and see Ron and his talented team serving people with a smile, you don't want to leave. We stayed, and we were so glad we did! I can't say enough about the genuine connection and the true passion for hospitality that Ron's team exhibits. It's a rare sight in the restaurant world of today. Consummate professionals in every part of this restaurant, many with decades of restaurant experience. Our server, Phil, was a great example. When we left our table at the end of the night, we sought him out (and Ron) to tell him how much we enjoyed the experience! We started with their legendary onion rings (two orders) and nearly devoured them all. Then it was on to the Red Rooster Chicken, Chicken Fried Steak, and Country Fried Chicken. They were all five-star! We topped it off with their homemade pies and cake (coconut cream and carrot) and couldn't believe how good these were. In summary, an amazing night in a small town restaurant, staffed by people who truly appreciate you as a patron and love serving you. We had food that rivals anything you can get in cities the size of Lincoln and Omaha (we're from Lincoln) for a price that's very fair. This place should be a must try on your list of road-trips. Today's drive took us to Ceresco, where we stopped at the Red Rooster. I didn't realize I should have ordered chicken (it's known for that) and so we had a hot beef sandwich and a hamburger. We were greeted by friendly servers who were helpful and efficient. Everything is clean. The hot beef sandwich was excellent, as was the hamburger. The salad bar was amazing with lettuce salad and then many homemade salads--all the salad dressings are homemade except for the Dorothy Lynch. What we didn't know when we arrived is that we should have saved room for pie. There was an array of delicious looking pies and desserts. We will be back. The owner stopped by each table to visit for a few minutes. read more

My husband and I went here Thursday night and it took an hour and 30 minutes once we got it, it was very dry it taste horrible and now we both are very sick having gut problems and everything else. We most definitely will not be eating here again. Definitely not worth 60 bucks. Plus I am pregnant and if we have food poisoning that won't be good. read more

This is a great small town restaurant with friendly servers, homemade traditional food and a very comfortable restaurant setting. And a super cool pie case from an old ice freezer...check it out when you come. I loved the bookshelves that Grant our waiter took my squirmy 6 year old to find some books to read while we waited. The walleye and chicken fried chicken was amazing! The kids loved the chicken noodle soup and chicken strips. We ate the fried pickles too fast and didn't get a picture before they melted in our mouths. The batter was so crispy and reminds you of something your grandma would make. Ron the owner was so sweet to sit and talk with us a few minutes and he is proud of his new business and staff and with every right! What a great addition to our town. A great place in a small town. We've been once.....tried the chicken and we will definitely be back. Chicken was hot, crispy, juicy but not greasy. Came with fries and green beans. Best onion rings and jalapeño dip I've ever had. Chicken fried steak was amazing. I do really wish I would have gotten the side salad I had ordered. Not sure if it was on the bill or not. Other then that it was really good food and service. I did have them at a 5 star but have to take one away when you don't get all the food you ordered. We've come out from Lincoln several times to eat and have an enjoyed it each time. Staff is very friendly and the owner circulates around making sure everyone is taken care of. The food has always been excellent. Onion rings are awesome, and so is the chicken. We've not had any of their homemade pies yet, but we understand they are excellent. My husband and I went to dinner last night and ate at the Legendary Red Rooster in Ceresco. I have been wanting to go there ever since hearing about their opening last fall and the fantastic reviews they were receiving. The ambiance of this restaurant reminds me of the great family restaurants my family went to in my childhood. The owner was walking the dining room, greeting the diners at their tables, and offering his recommendations. He also let the diners know about their home made pies which he was proud to let us know they are made locally by an elderly Mennonite woman. Their menu has so many things we wanted to try. Their known for their fried chicken from a old recipe from the 1950s. I really wanted to try the chicken but I heard their steaks are fantastic as well. We both ordered steaks, I got the 14 oz ribeye and my husband got the 12 oz sirloin. Both of our steaks didn't disappoint, perfect and tender to the last bite. We are already planning to return with friends in a couple weeks, as I still need to try their fried chicken, or maybe the hot roast beef. read more

My wife is a resident of the city of Lincoln and remembers from her childhood the original fried chicken recipe and she heard that Ron had acquired that same receipe fro the original owners, so we went up the road to find out, and we were not disappointed. From the moment we opened the doors you could tell it was going to be an experience. The good smells were everywhere. The decor is both classic and modern, a truly comfortable and fun environment. Patrons of all ages packed the tables and the bar area, which is always a good sign of success. We had a few drinks and were seated in good time. Our waitress (Allison, I promised to mention her by name) was knowledgeable and friendly and made sure to frequently attend to us. The owner (Ron) is one of those fellows who goes from table to table, introducing himself and offering stories, very engaging and a fun personality. We ordered the onion ring appetizer (not too salty as they often are, and very good) and the fried chicken...YES, it was as she remembered! The portions were generous and the food was made fresh (our sides were mashed potatoes and green beans, and anyone who has ever had fresh versus "less than fresh" -- canned or pre-prepared, etc) will know the difference. The menu ranges from grilled fish to the famous fried chicken to prime rib, so I feel comfortable in saying that there is something here for almost anyone/everyone. We were too full to try the desserts that are displayed in an incredible "ice box"-style refrigerated display case -- a bona fide antique -- but we are already planning the menu for our next return trip. In a world of noisy sports bars and screaming flat-screen TVs, getting out of the city and having a quality meal, in a quality setting, on main street in small-town Nebraska was a welcome treat and all you have to do is come here once and then maybe you, like me, will understand why there are so many out-of-county plates parked up and down the street in front of this very a-cut-above restaurant. read more
