This is a hidden gem. I have been to stores surrounding Red Sun and missed this restaurant. Beautiful fish tank when you enter. Make sure to read the sign that any food taken out will be charged. The ambiance was casual. Plenty of buffet tables with a variety of foods. Service was great. The food was delicious the only complaint was that some of the food was cold even though it was on the heated table. Give this a try. read more

We have tried this place in the past and found one delicious hot dessert item that brings us back. (Custard in a shell pastry) We thought we'd give it one more shot last night. There were two tables during the 5 o'clock hour. At a buffet, that's not good news. That means the food is old and it was very old. Some of it was just lukewarm. Most of it was hardened, rubbery or mush. A baby roach was walking down the bar of hot food. Even the roach wasn't eating the food. It was walking away from it. Please don't go here unless you have $16 each to waste. This place should be condemned or at a minimum ashamed of the food they serve. read more

This place used to be a good place to eat, atmosphere was decent, however we went last night and it was not exactly a great experience. It was my grandson's birthday and this is where he wanted to eat. The service was not really there only 1 waitress and she only came by 1 time in the 30 minutes we were there. The buffet lines were not filled and what was there cold. It was dinner time on Friday night! For the price we had to pay it was a real disappointment. This is the second time I've come here. The first was during covid and they had a limited selection that wasn't good at all. Thought I'd try again. Got the takeout buffet. I asked how much first (it's not posted anywhere), so staying was my own fault. $13.98 for one takeout container. Add an extra $5 if it doesn't close correctly. I thought about it and paid the money. They require that you pay for everything up front, whether you get it to go or you eat in. I almost asked for my money back when the guy handed me the container. It was the smallest takeout container I have ever seen. Easily 1/2 the size of normal ones. So $13.98 was high to start with for a lunch buffet, but when you only get to fill this small container for $13.98 it's a TOTAL RIPOFF. The selection wasn't great. I got 4 different kinds of chicken, hoping at least a couple of them were seasoned differently and well. Every one tasted like the other. How can General Tso's, honey chicken, and pepper chicken all taste the same? I saw one dish with vegetables in it, well besides the fried potatoes. Usually there are a few dishes that have sliced onions or peppers. Not on this day. Just broccoli in a fake-seafood concoction. Had to chase down a small cup for sauce (one is included in the $13.98, extras are $.30 each). They don't put them out for you, they're under the counter. That's where the mini containers are, too, so you can't see them until after you pay. I won't be back, and definitely not for the takeout lunch. read more

Dined at the Collierville (which is now Ichaban Grill) & Wolfchase locations a lot since the early to mid 00's. I haven't been to Red Sun in 5 years. I came back last month & dined here with a friend & my gf. I have to say I was very disappointed in the lackluster in their sub par Quality of food offered on their buffet. I found their Buffet variety a bit limited & medicore. The only highlight for me there was the Mongolian Barbcue & Sushi Bar. The Sushi was prepped well With no problem & Mongolian Barbecue station was on point. Hot & ready in no time. with perfect balance of oil and spices. I tipped the chef well him & the sushi chef were the only ones who knew how to make anything great. The server was friendly but was kinda slow in keeping up with my plates & drinks. I'll only be coming back if someone pays me to eat here (like last time) or they mail me a coupon for a free lunch or dinner. read more

I like the modern feel and look of the restaurant. The fish tank in the center is a nice touch. The food overall was lacking in taste and the fried stuff tasted off, like it had been fried in old oil. Service wasn't that good either, I was already on my second plate of food when they finally brought me my drink. First time here - and will be my last. Food was actually very good, place seems clean. My issue was with a few of the staff. You see - I have a medical condition, and a service dog. My German Shepherd alerts to my medical condition and helps me tremendously. I walked in and the hostess was very friendly but the owner literally tried kicking me out right away. The hostess corrected her and sat me and apologized. I chalked it up to a misunderstanding at first. The owner told her to seat me in the farthest and most secluded part of the place. Didn't really mind this, but still - can't segregate me because of my disability! Then when I approached the buffet (with my service dog at heel at all times) my server approached me aggressively and accused my service dog of "licking the plates" which was absurd! She NEVER did this, and I told her right away that she didn't. She scurried off to tell the manager - if she licked a plate why not remove that plate huh? She never did. Proves she was full of crap. Then a new server who spoke English began helping me and apologized for their actions. She was very sweet and nice and understood the laws. I'm still here while writing this - and at least 3 employees keep giving me dirty looks and watching like my service dog is some beast in their establishment. read more

This was my first time here and it started off well. I was greeted and seated right away. There is a quite a variety of food to choose from. The food all looked hot and smelled delicious. First I tried the crab meat wrapped in bacon- it wasn't as good as it looked. I'll pass on that one. Not for me. Next I tried the mushrooms that were in a sauce. Those were great! I went back for more of those. The egg drop soup was delicious. I ate the entire serving. I added a tiny bit of salt because I like my food a little more salty than others. I will say that all of the fried items, including sushi were not fresh; cream cheese wonton, fried sushi, calamari- all of these tasted old. It had a terrible old chewy texture. The other sushi was eh-ok. I didn't go back for seconds on that; in fact, I didn't even finish eating all of the pieces I selected. I went to get me a piece of nutter butter off the sweets table and I was sooo excited to bite into it and love it. NOPE. IT WAS STALE :( I was so disappointed once I felt the stiff bite instead of a soft crisp crunch. I visited the the fruit and selected red grapes, melon, and watermelon. The slices of watermelon were generous and looked refreshing. I bit into the watermelon and it's wasn't sweet at all :( I know that's not the restaurants fault. The grapes were not seedless and the melon was ok. Not sweet but not terrible. I gave up. I didn't want to try anything else and be disappointed. Sadly, I will not be returning. I wanted to like this place but our food spoke for itself. I will say this, this place has potential. It really does. They just need to keep food fresh and not mix in the old food with the new food and maybe turn up the warmers because the food could use a little more heat. The restaurant was clean. This used to be a very good buffet restaurant but after going the other night with my wife and my son this was a disaster everything was overcooked employees very nice .... pay before you eat almost $60 and all the food was terrible that's a joke I will never go back and mainly you're paying such a high price for the upgrades of their building that they've redone a lot of the reviews you're saying on here are from three years ago so don't believe all the other ones because the food is crap. I vacillated between 1 & 2 stars because even though it looked decent when I walked in for the 1st time at 8:30 (they close at 9:30), when I actually started trying to eat the spread I had pulled from the buffet tables, almost every item was way too over cooked to actually eat and went in the trash! They have very poor sushi choices that mainly consist of pieces of rolls that are variations of fake crab combinations. They offer no nigiri or sashimi. So, I skipped the sushi section. I got a small piece of several types of fried fish, fried shrimp and a crab cluster which were all so mushy and tasteless, that I didn't even swallow the first bite of each. The clams were also over cooked and didn't have a good flavor or consistency. The pasta portion of the dumpling and bits of the rice were hard and inedible. The egg roll and fried wonton wasn't bad, but the thinner spring roll was bad. The salad bar doesn't have good choices or good dressings. I liked the chargrilled chicken pieces that I think had a teriyaki sauce on it and were the only protein item that wasn't over cooked; this was the best item here. So the only items that I actually ate were the egg roll, 1 wonton, part of a dumpling, some not too bad wonton soup (although, they have no chopped green onion to put on top and their crispy wonton strips that you put on top of the soup had a bad oil taste), the teriyaki chicken, a few mediocre noodles and the cocktail shrimp. And the sesame/red bean balls were good, but they don't even make those. But the fortune cookie that I took to go, was of such poor quality, that I spit out the first bite and threw it out. That's really pathetic, that they don't even choose a decent fortune cookie brand. So no, I would not come back. read more

Had dinner with a friend last night. Used to be my favorite but I haven't been here in a few years. I have not missed anything. It was $33 for two dinners and one drink. Highly overpriced for the quality of food. I started to think I had COVID while dining. The food was so bland. No flavor in any of the dishes. I couldn't taste the food. I had to stop at a store and buy a candy bar to make sure I wasn't sick. Yup I tasted the candy so it was their food. Some of the items just looked dry as chalk. Others were just looking mushy. The "fried rice" was weird. It really looked as if they forgot to fry it. It was really just white rice with a few veggies thrown in. I don't recall ever having cabbage in my fried rice but they do that here. I mean huge chunks of cabbage in the rice. No, just no. The place was clean but the chairs were kinda gross. Having had some 'interesting' experiences with Chinese Buffets in Memphis, Red Sun is our family 'go to' place when the urge for Chinese food takes us. It is not a perfect place by any means - there are places selling better Asian food in town but when judged in it's own class (All you can eat, quick in and quick out buffet' it more than holds it's own. Cleanliness is good, no arguements there. The buffet tables themselves are well maintained and almost everything looks appetizing. The food is regularly swapped out and I don't recall anything i've eaten there ever feeling congealed or looking as if it had been standing there all day. The sushi is ok and freshly made - it's not Sekisui (as somebody commented here) but you are NOT at Sekisui - this is an all you can eat buffet - your expectations need to be reasonable. My wife has a theory about this place. Whenever we have been, an abnormally high proportion of the diners appear to be Asian. I know if i found a decent British (yes I am a Brit) restaurant in town I would visit often so we believe the same is true for Red Sun and the Memphis Asian community. Only downsides to this place are the wait staff who are VERY low key. You will never be approached to find out if you want a drink refill so be sure to jump up and flag somebody down if you do. The majority of the wait staff do not appear to speak good English and I think it is maybe the lack of understanding that makes it feel as if they are being slightly 'stand off'ish'. Don't get me wrong, they arent rude - they just bring your drink and then your bill - nothing else. Not always a bad thing. I come here for their bone-in deep fried fish. The fish is always always fresh (even at 8PM). This is a pretty authentic Chinese dish. Growing up, we only get this when my nanny is in a good mood. It brings back memories of home. I can tell they use good quality ingredients here. The shrimps are fresh and have that natural sweetness. House pad Thai is not authentic, but is well seasoned and made from the top quality ingredients. I love a great mix of very authentic dishes and american-chinese buffet stuff.
