I decided to try this place based on positive yelp reviews and a big fish on the sign over the front door. The fish on the sign and a big plastic lobster inside were the best part of the whole experience. Counter service by the cashier was courteous and I should have followed his suggestion to get a salad. Instead I was attracted to the fried shrimp and catfish combo. The place is beat up inside and the wire bookshelf in the dining room, filled with foodservice items (instant hush puppy mix, seafood breading in boxes), should be a warning to customers that the food is the same quality as your average high school cafeteria. My fried fish and shrimp were bland and greasy. The fries were undercooked and pasty and the hush puppies were inedible. I went back to the counter and asked for replacement fries and hush puppies, and they were better, but still blecchy. All I can say is if you like deep fried styrofoam you will love this place. If you want an authentic gulf seafood experience, keep on walking. read more

I love the ambience, the music and the vibe. It definitely isn't a "hole in the wall" as it is a pretty decent sized restaurant, but it looks and feels like it could be. They had great music playing, the staff were great, and the food was pretty tasty as well. I ordered the "Nashville hot sandwich" with fried catfish. I'll be honest, I've never really eaten "catfish" until the South, and it has made me a fan. Especially this sandwich itself. There were some hush puppies that had rested on a bed of fries. It was my first time experiencing those and I liked them. They had a hue of sweetness to them. Another meal that was ordered was chicken tenders along with fries, which were pretty good too if you were not feeling very adventurous. Now I did not order the Expresso martini, but it was too cute not to post. I am personally not a fan of these drinks so I urge you to try it for yourself. I have been to Flying Fish in Bentonville, AR and had a great time but the experience in Memphis seemed more fun and memorable. Maybe it's because I was dining with someone who loves food adventures just as much as I do. I love they have the flying fish mounted on the walls that helps create a very casual and carefree ambience. I would not come here for an intimate date but for fun, casual dining experience with family or friends, a group, or with someone that loves Cajun comfort food. There's a cost of flow of people aka line worthy restaurant. We luckily arrived before the dinner rush, which meant we had a smaller line to wait. After we ordered food and the cashier gave us a buzzer from when the food is ready, but the wait was short. The employees were very helpful and generous in keeping customers happy with the condiments for everyone's meal and willingness to help a customer choose what to get off their menu. I had ordered and shared the following items and honestly, we could have purchased more but we were too happy with what we had ordered. Next time, we'll order more and perhaps try other options. - Cajun Platter( served with rice, fried gator, crawfish jambalaya, and 2 pairs of frog legs), Before tonight, my wife swore that she did not like frog legs due to her belief. it was too much work for the amount of meat on the bones. Now, she believes that frog legs are pretty yummy with the legs here being tender and fall off the bone delish. The fried gator was so tender and delicious, and we savored every bite. Started walking downtown and the sign in the front caught my attention.l and I'm sooooo glad it did. There is a fast food chain who shall remain nameless that I was going to go to for some fish but after stopping here....THE LORT knew I needed to eat GOOD! I ordered a poor boy but after seeing another customer get the gumbo I had to jump on the GRAVY train...literally and figuratively! Because this gumbo was GUMBOOING! The shrimp were large and cooked perfectly! The rice was the perfect consistency and the roux gave a stew gravy taste but worked perfectly for me. I was suppose to take my food to go but I couldn't help but sit down as the blues music played in the background. My family visited Memphis and stayed in the downtown area. We were walking to a bbq spot when we stumbled upon this spot. Since we had someone in the group that does not eat meat, we decided to try this instead. Now looking around at the decor, I was skeptical. Some of the seating definitely needs updating. However, I watched one of the workers bring up some whole fried catfish and it looked great. I decided to get the filet fried catfish with fried shrimp. My daughter got the hamburger and my husband got the whole fried catfish. Let me tell you, I'm from Louisiana so I know good seafood, heck good food overall! This fish was seasoned and fried wonderfully! The fish had a slight cornmeal like texture which I love! Everything was made to order and was piping hot and fresh! My mom had the grilled tilapia which she enjoyed and lobster soup. My dad had the fish and gumbo, he didn't have any complaints. You know when the music makes the food dance in your mouth? That's what's happening here. The atmosphere is casual counter service with the friendliest staff around. The Grilles Salmon made Snappy was Cajun-spicy and so flavorful and tender! The squash were crisp grilled and the beans & rice took me back to south Louisiana. Today I ordered through uber eats because DoorDash kept saying the restaurant was too busy to place my order. It's unfortunately more expensive ordering that way than it is in DoorDash. So I ended up paying fifteen dollars more. All in all the 15 dollars was well worth it. The food here is so good. I ordered the grilled red snapper with the beans and rice and the grilled vegetables. The red snapper also came with a sauce. I chose the chimichiri sauce (sp). It was so so good. The red snapper was grilled to perfection and everything on my plate complemented each other. Everyone who got food here was pleased. The fried catfish is delicious as well. Minus one I didn't get enough sauce and they forgot my drinks and the mishap with DoorDash. It had a cat-fishy taste but wasn't overpowering - just enough to let you know you were eating fish. The fried shrimp was good. I don't know how this place got the reviews it had, but this was some of the worst seafood I ever had. Only cornmeal and cracked pepper was used as seasoning. The plus was that the shrimp was butterflied. I ordered 12 (way too much) and only ate like 3. The fries were ok, but I was really craving fried shrimp and was super disappointed. I do not recommend. The staff was nice. Kinda looked like a dive inside and def met with a few flies. They had a condiment station, which I'm not a huge fan of. It has metered street parking. Went here for a quick dinner on a Wednesday evening. I ordered the combo basket with four shrimp and two pieces of catfish. I also ordered the side salad with Italian dressing and the pickled green tomatoes. This is the kind of restaurant where you order at the counter, seat yourself and pick up your food when it's ready. Everything was really good except the pickled green tomatoes, which was too sweet for me. The catfish was perfectly hot, seasoned, and crispy. The shrimp was delicious and well seasoned as well. The salad wasn't just w basic iceberg lettuce salad. It was a spring mix with tomatoes, cucumbers and shredded carrots. The fries were perfect and delicious too. What a gem in Memphis. Everyone thinks bbq when they come here, which is understandable, but if you want a good reasonable meal near Beale St, this is great option. I had the fried catfish for lunch and substituted fries for fried okra. It was all great, but I wish the breading had some flavor to the seasoning. In town for a conference and had heard about Flying Fish so I gathered a few folks and we rode the trolley down to try them out. I didn't realize how causal the place would be. There is no table service. You order at the counter and when the notification thingy they give you goes off, you go get your food. Drinks are self-serve as well. Very simple but the system works because your food is prepared quickly. I ordered the 4 shrimp and 2 catfish filet basket, which came with hushpuppies and fries. I substituted coleslaw for my fries. The butterflied shrimp were very tasty. I like that they were butterflied because that meant they were clean. The catfish was fried in cornmeal only which is the only way I like it but the fish could have been just a tad more seasoned. I liked the hushpuppies too but not so much the coleslaw. This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Memphis. Every time I visit the river city, I find myself here immersed in the amazing blues music, silly fish plaques, and soul-gripping food. Everything is amazing. From the grilled trout with garlic butter to the fried catfish and shrimp. Be sure to order fried pickles too to complete the experience.
