I NEVER write bad reviews but WOW! This place is not customer friendly and needs to learn proper ways of managing a golf course. My group (all around 14-15 handicap) were getting yelled at by the group behind us for slow play when we were waiting on the group in front of us the entire time. The marshal wouldn't talk to us but all he would say as he drove by in his golf cart was "you guys are behind"... Hey buddy, look on the green ahead of us, where are we supposed to go?! The group behind us called the office to complain about slow play on 14 (my group) and of course here comes the great marshal of Redtail to push us along. The course was NOT mowed and the fairway grass was about 3-4 inches long. Cool course but definitely not worth the hassle. First and last time at Redtail. Too bad! read more

I recently bought a set of clubs from Redtail Golf Center. Never in my life have I been treated with such respect, care and courtesy! Even though I came in without an appointment, and they were very busy, they treated me as if I were a vip customer. Because of the way they treated me, I ordered the clubs through them and two weeks later when they arrived, there was a mistake and the wrong clubs were sent. I live three hours away and so the drive cost time and money. I have never been to a golf shop that was willing to go the extra mile like Redtail Golf center. The manager Wes, went so far above and beyond for me that I was shocked! If I could give this place a rating of 10 I would! Unbelievably great service and fair prices! I highly recommend this golf shop! Even though there are places to buy golf equipment in my area, I am sending my friends to see them. read more

Chris Campbell from Red Tail Golf was great yesterday when I came to look at irons. I had a nice driver, five wood and putter but my set of irons which has served me well over the years were twenty years old. He listened and together we figured out what irons worked the best. I ended up purchasing a Hybrid with information about a future purchase of irons. Think this will compliment the clubs I have and help me with that shot that sometimes lands just off the lush fairway. He gave me options on sale items but have waited a long time for that exact set of irons and maybe Santa will be good this Christmas. Hey Honey, have my Christmas wish list on file. Got fitted for new clubs on 11/16/21. My experience was wonderful and left feeling greatly satisfied with purchase. I am very fortunate that I am retired and could get an early AM appt on a Tuesday. I heard that the shop was extremely busy the last six months and especially this summer. I was amazed at the technology used to evaluate club head speed, trajectory, distance and other items. No hitting into a screen. No rushing in and out, no pressure on make/models and budget. My current irons were 13 years old and had a mis match of woods purchased at golf shows/discounts. It was quickly determined that I needed Senior Graphite Flex shafts which made a difference. I tried at least 6 of the newest and greatest irons/hybrids. We discussed at length and made the decision to buy a iron/hybrid set that was launched 1.5 years ago that saved me about $500.00. Brand new right out of the box that included 4/5 hybrid and 6-PW. It was refreshing to work with honest people that didn't push me into a purchase that made no sense at my level. I also purchased a older model (new) bag and some wedges from a year or so ago. I upgraded my entire bag with technology just a year or so old and saved a ton of money. I understand everyone is different but that is why I was referred here because honest decisions are made for everyone. read more

Just fitted for my first set of custom irons. At 6' 3" I always played with off the shelf clubs. My game above average and was inconsistent. I'm hopeful this new set of Ping A400 will take me to the next level. The fitting was completed Ben Grusin. It was a very comprehensive process that I enjoyed immensely. Ben did a terrific and was very patient in the 2 HR process. I would highly recommend Ben if you are looking to improve your game and get to the next level with a custom set of clubs. I walked in and said d I need hep w a set table f new clubs, they send me the guy who has been there 2 days- rude! I'm aa good golfer and actually need a knowledgeable person ...While the girls in the shop were nice enough to hold my dogs leashes while I tried clubs, the club fitter decided to help the young beginner with a set instead of me. Bad move, not only will I never come back I am going to tell everyone I play golf with how bad your customer service was. I had money to buy clubs and now I'll never come back...wow. I have been taught and practiced more than 6 months at Redtail Golf Center. I am currently taking a lesson with an instructor called Richard who is very friendly and specific to guide me how to make better contact on the ball. He is unstoppable communicator with his students, and he wants to play with students to make them better in stratege to get some ideas of how to practice at driving range, and hit the ball when we play golf. Furthermore, there is a special fitter named Cole who is also very friendly and professional to discuss about clubs comparing with what I have and what I want to have considering consistency which is very important to all of golfers including me. Not only people I mentioned above, the people who work in Redtail are very friendly On the one hand, (It is not complaining, but) I hope there are more track-man devices on driving range. I practice more than 200 balls (sometimes over 300 balls) in Redtail, but It is really hard to track golf balls on eyes, especially on the weather of clouds. Tracking a ball is not necessarily to be perfectly accurate, but if we know the idea how the shot went, it would be very efficient to practice. I know it is an expensive device, but I hope the time when I could track my balls on driving range would come soon. Overall, it has been very nice and good experience to play golf since I started playing over there. read more

Very disappointed with this course. Fairways patchy, many bare spots. Those areas with grass in need of mowing. Many of the greens are scarred and don't roll true. The design of the course is great, but the maintenance is poor and ruins the enjoyment. For the money, I expected much better. read more

Played twilight here starting at 4pm on Friday. Two groups of 6 are playing in front of us, told they were employees and this is their weekly round. Ok sounds fair. These groups took so long on the course that we had to run to finish 18. They didn't let us play thru, didn't fix their pitch marks, and on the 18th hole they all played together and decided to all putt out on the last hole. As we were 100yards out on the final hole in the rain as it got dark, we were eager to finish and yelled out that we'd like to finish if they could hurry. They slowly walked off after they all putt (12 people on the final green at once), told us some pretty harsh words, and a few gave us the finger. I get they have a free round, that's great, but I paid to play at a reasonable pace, and when I pay to play I also don't expect staff to flip me off, even if they were off the clock. I'd say I won't be going back but I probably will next year, but I won't be spending extra money on balls, or lessons, or the driving range. read more

Staff usually has a mediocre attitude and usually treat me and other costumers like we're bothering them. I recently called up to get my lie and loft adjusted. They quoted me $36 on the phone but when I got there, they tried to charge me $72! They said its $4.50/club for loft and another $4.50/club for lie! What a ripoff! The course is OK- interesting but it could be maintained better. The price is the upper end of the municipal range in Portland and I'm not sure its worth it. The driving range would be much better if you could see the ball land! The range slopes downwards slightly and from everywhere except the teaching area, you can't see it come down. There's only target pins less than 130 yrds and greater than 180 yrds. The biggest problem with the range is the balls- they're super duper dead. Its totally messed with my iron distances. I've found them to be about 15 yards shorter than regular balls- a significantly bigger difference than usual range balls. read more

This review is for the pro shop, haven't golfed here yet. My buddy bought new clubs and let me try them out, turns out my hand-me-down clubs had been shortened by one of the previous owners. I went to redtail after work one day to check them out as I had heard good things about their pro shop. I walked in, looked at the rack of irons, and was taken aback by their pricing. Looks like pretty much full blown retail for what is on the rack. So I went up to the counter and talked to a guy about buying clubs on a budget, he was very receptive and understanding that I couldn't afford any of the clubs on the rack. He explained that they had a bunch of sets of different length and shafted clubs that are on sale, and took me into the range to hit some different clubs. He worked with me on irons as well as a driver for over an hour, and I was just a walk-in. He was giving me tips on my driver swing, and by the end I felt like I got a golf lesson. I ended up buying a set of irons, but passed on the driver because I didn't have enough money with me to buy both. Overall very pleased with this buying experience. read more

Pluses: range open long hours and lots of great deals in pro shop. Nice putting and short game facility Seems like it could be a great teaching facility, but teachers don't seem to operate as team. Minuses: It is Oregon, why so few ranges with actual grass? Have taken a few lessons here and not sure of philosophy. Note: this isn't a review or commentary of the golf course, just the golf shop. The fact that RedTail is listed in Golf Digest as one of "America's Top 100 Clubfitters" is a complete joke. When I was "fit" for irons there a couple of years ago, I was basically handed off the rack clubs and told they were good enough for me. They literally didn't change ANY aspect of the clubhead, grip or shaft. Furthermore, every single time I've ever been in that place I've been treated like crap and have observed them doing the same to others. The guys in the store and in the range bays are pompous and egotistical, acting like you're totally wasting their precious time and that they're too good for you. I've heard this from numerous other golfers in the Portland area as well, so it's not just me. It's too bad since I don't know of another place that has Trackman setup where you can hit balls into a real range. read more

I had a recent fitting with Jason, club fitter with Red Tail Golf Center. What an experience. I really enjoy golf and yearn to improve. My driver was older and off the shelf, ill fitting with what turned out to be an incorrect shaft stiffness and loft. While I knew the driver wasn't quite right, it was a known bad and I could deal with it. I didn't want to spend a lot of money and end up with something worse. Jason made sure this was not the case. Jason went through all of my clubs, making sure they were the right length and pitched upright correctly for my specific body measurements. Existing irons and hybrids good to go. He reviewed my wedges and recommended three new bladed Clevelands--loft through gap wedge. Then he went to work on covering yardage gaps on longer clubs--to make sure I had logical gaps in carry and total yardage as we stepped up six iron through driver. There were a lot of swings, analysis with the TracMan and a ton of patience by Jason. After 2.5 hours, we were both satisfied. I walked out with loads of confidence, a new driver, five wood and three top of the line wedges. Time and money well spent. Because of their volume, they have the clubs in store ready to go. No waiting around for clubs to be shipped by a manufacturer. Their pricing structure meets or beats the market Great experience at Red Tail. read more

I've been coming here for a few years now, mostly to use the driving range. The course is fun to play (*only when golfers behind you aren't teeing off before you've even gotten a chance to walk out of their line of fire - seems to happen a lot here) but on occasion I've left feeling a bit disappointed in the way front staffers treat golf patrons. I agree with some of the other yelpers here that it's almost like we're a nuisance. Don't get me wrong, there are a handful of Redtail staff members who have gone the extra mile to be courteous, funny and welcoming. They're usually the starters and a handful of the instructors. I really hope management will focus on ways to improve customer interaction. Might look into "customer service the Disney way" as a model. Overall I still enjoy my time here. read more

I moved to Hillsboro a few months ago and was thrilled to find Redtail. I look for two things in a golf course: challenge and value. Redtail can stretch to 7,100+ yards from the tips and plays to a 74.1/136. That is the most challenging of any municipal course (and most others, too) in the Portland area, and they also have the some of the best prices, too. I can also report that the staff is awesome! I've never waited more than a couple minutes to pay and play, and they are always friendly. They even gave me a jump once when I left my lights on. The course itself is always well-kept, even in Winter, with the greens and tee boxes clean and cut. As I mentioned, it can be challenging, with lots of elevation changes, trees that linger and haunt, water, OB, and all the rest. The 7th hole is a 646 yard par 5 that usually plays straight into the wind. The 15th is a 470 yard par 4 that also plays into the wind from an elevated tee box with water right, OB left, and a green protected by water, bunkers, and slope. These holes are among the toughest on an unrelenting test of golf. I'm sure the more forward tees (that are 4 sets total) offer an easier go of it, although I've never tried them. Check this course out if you like a good test of golf or like a good deal. I've played Heron Lakes, Rose City, Quail Valley, Meriwether, and most of the other municipal and full-length public courses in the Portland area and none of them can really compare to Redtail. read more

"Golf center" captures it. Red Tail lacks character compared to the other Portland public courses. Long, uninteresting layout, unmanageable sloping greens and unappealing aesthetics -- all yours for a relatively high greens fee. read more

I went in to get fitted for an iron set with Jorden Clure and he took the extra time to explain fundamental swing mechanics and how that would apply not just to my (atrocious) swing today, but what would be the prescribed "fit" as my game improves with practice and play. I am what I would consider an "informed beginner" in the game of golf and therefore not in a position to comment on the condition of the course itself. Consequently, my comments are relevant to Equipment Selection and Quality of Instruction. Firstly, I would implore anyone considering equipment purchase to PLEASE consult with Rick Westbrook at Red Tail. Rick spent 7 hours with me spread over 3 days to begin constructing a personalized and fitted set! Most importantly, he took (and takes) an incremental approach, since a player of my limited ability doesn't require a complete set right off the bat. So even if you are looking for just one club, do yourself a huge favor and consult with Rick. Following the receipt of my clubs, I took advantage of the complimentary private lesson and was very impressed with Jeff Battin's approach to the game. While I am an accomplished tennis player (college, open tournaments), I find Golf to be quite unintuitive and so correct instruction is an imperative for me! Following a doubt ridden practice session yesterday, I ran into Rick on my way out and he asked me to show up this morning (8/6) even though my regular coach (Jeff ) had a full schedule! While I was waiting, I ran into John Jordan - one of the other pros. Long story short, John introduced me to some visualization techniques for my swing and this is EXACTLY what I needed!!! If you are left handed be careful. I went out and was all set up to get fitted after a 30 min wait. I was set up with a test club and hit it for about 15 min and then the "fitter" came back and said there were no left handed iron sets left and basically that I can't buy a new iron set for at least a month. You'd think they would have known about the shortage in lefty clubs before they made me be there for an hour. read more
