Wow. I didn't think it was possible but this place is now officially the worst golf experience in Oregon. Used to be heron lakes but at least heron lakes is 10 dollars cheaper. Redtail expects you to pay 50 dollars for green fees so you can walk in and smack geese shit. Only coming here for the range now read more

This shout out goes to Chris who has helped me on three separate occasions with my sons golf needs. The first time shoes, the second a driver and the third a putter. I had also considered getting rid of an expensive putter (that I had previously bought at a big sports chain which wasn't working for me) for something newer but he suggested shortening and re gripping it with a thinner grip which completely changed the feel and evidently, how I put now. I could have easily spent $200-$300 on a new putter but was able to turn mine into something I love for about $33. Now, I have been in sales and service for over 25 years and it is rare to find someone of this caliber in the industry anywhere. He is at the top of his craft and genuinely likes to help people. I don't know who is in charge of this place but make sure your staff learn from this gentleman because he is a one in a thousand! read more

Had a fitting here on 10/21/20 with Jeff. Can't recommend Jeff enough, he explained all the numbers to me from track man and what numbers I should be trying to achieve and why. Very enjoyable experience of going through the process of finding the right clubs and shafts. Usually high handicappers get brushed to the side during a "fitting" but Jeff didn't even look at that. If your interested in a finding the right clubs and enjoying the process Jeff is the guy to go to. read more

I met with Jason recently to do a club fitting at Red Tail. He was incredibly knowledgeable and worked with me to see what fit best. He was patient and explained specifics about what we were looking to accomplish from all the cool stats and what to focus on in finding the right fit and new set of irons and woods. Although it wasn't about price the trust and gratitude I have in what Jason explained in the cost of a newer club and what it would get you verses something just at great and a more comfortable fit but last years model at a discounted rate has me highly recommending him and the folks at Red Tail if it's something you're considering doing. My first experience with RedTail was when I signed up for lessons. The first session was about 50% discussion about what I hope to gain from the lessons and about 50% looking at my swing. The rest of the sessions were a mix of drills, hitting at the range, the putting greens, and playing a few holes on the course. I am very happy with the lessons I received from Matt Bryda and have added about 20 yards to each club and straightened out my driver. The lessons included seeing videos of my swing vs other players and lots of Trackman data. The trackman numbers were really helpful because it was instant feedback to fix some of the flightpath issues I was having. The pro shop isn't very big, but they pack a lot in the space. It is always busy, but staff finds time to help if needed. Every time I have been in, there has been some sort of sale going on from 30% to 50% off various clubs or balls. I bought a box of 16 TaylorMade TP5 balls that were on sale for 30% off. I went in looking for a putter and got exceptional service from Travis. I knew I needed to replace my putter and thought I knew what I wanted, but after the help from Travis, I got something completely different. He quickly helped me compare a couple of lengths and watched me swing and within about 20 minutes I was happily making my purchase. Travis did a good job explaining what goes into picking a putter and noticed when I was changing my swing to fit the putter rather than the putter fitting my swing. After purchasing my putter I was able to apply some of the things he spoke about to my practice session and began making more putts. Highly recommend finding Travis if you need any help. I have only played a few holes on the course during my lessons, but I enjoyed it and plan to play 18. There seems to be some good variety to the course and I had to use some strategy while playing. I plan to schedule a fitting for a driver this fall/ winter and will update this review if that happens. read more

Could not be more pleased with the club-fitting experience I just had here. Jason Burnett was incredibly patient, knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend him to any beginner golfer who is ready for custom fit clubs (and if you can swing a club, you're ready.) Jason went over bag composition with me, and worked out a mix of clubs to aim for. He put me on the launch monitor, and picked out a few sets of irons to try based on my measurements and swing. I wanted to try some other sets as well, just to experience them, but I ended up going with his recommendation because it fit me the best. Because I was willing to be flexible on which irons I got, Jason was able to get some older models which were much less than the newest clubs. Out the door I spent much less for a complete bag of clubs that fit my needs perfectly, than I would have spent buying a larger set of irons at Dick's or online. Highly recommend Jason and Red Tail. I've been coming to RedTail since it was Progress Downs and there are two significant reasons why: the people and the challenge of the course. Jason Burnett, Master Club Fitter, has repeatedly put me into clubs that are best fit for my style and swing as well as kept my price points on par by not up-selling me. Additionally, if my normal instructor Adam Bouchard is busy with a lesson, Jason usually takes 5-10 with me to sharpen up my swing. Bouch, as we like to call him, is a very personable coach/teacher and takes his time to educate me the way I need to be instructed, not just the standard try this/try that. To randomly play here, perhaps twice a year, and have multiple customer issues every time, seems to be a systematic problem. I arrived early to my tee time to be told by the starter we were late. After trying to put the blame on my dad and myself, I informed him that the time on my phone indicated we were 10 minutes early. I asked him what time did his phone indicate? He mumbled something and was lucky to not have to explain his BS blame game to a manager. Good luck playing here. read more

Let me start by saying I can't speak for the course or course condition. However, I had an intro/ free lesson with Paula today along with my friend. Paula is a great instructor. She was patient and gave simple instructions that were helpful and made sense. She was encouraging and down to earth and I really enjoyed her communication style. I learned a lot from her in just an hour. I'm looking forward to taking some other classes with her as well as the other lady instructors there. The driving range here is good. The mats are in good condition as well as the range balls. I will definitely be back to red tail if not for a round of golf, but for instruction with Paula. read more

Used to be a favorite, but not anymore. Poor management and customer service. Had a 7:30 tee time and was told that a women's group was teeing off on the back nine at 9:00. So we rushed around the front nine and got to the tenth tee at 8:40 only to find out they had teed off two ladies groups ahead of us. The ladies whined when we asked to play through so we had to skip holes. Then there were golf instructors out there with students who held us up some more. When I complained in the pro shop, they didn't even acknowledge my concerns let alone do anything to make it right. I will not be going back! read more

I love my job at Redtail. I have a smile on my face everyday I come to work & I always do my best to make people feel welcomed. While many of these reviews seem pretty negative, I'd like to say that I've encountered many people who really enjoy RedTail and the atmosphere it entails. I know people who have come to Redtail for years, even since it was Progress Downs. Ive worked at Redtail for 5 years (seasonally,) so I know a thing or two about this place. Id like to respond to some of these reviews in my own opinion. You must consider that RedTail is a public golf course and the pace of play is affected because it is a popular Golf course and people go to it. It's in a great location, it's able to accommodate tournament games, there's a two story driving range that's open until 10pm, and during the summer we offer summer spring/summer golf camps to children /teens as young at 5 years old. (It's actually the cutest thing ever to watch them play in their little golf gear.) What I hope you can understand is that RedTail is an extremely busy place. From golf lessons, fittings, questions about golf clubs; to merchandise, such as clothing and and shoes, and providing range tokens and tee times. They want to provide you with the best experience. It just can be difficult sometimes with so many things going on, but I encourage you to utilize the facility to its maximum potential because it's worth it. read more

There are not enough accolades and promotion I can give of Cindy's skills as an instructor and coach. If you are considering taking some golf lessons, I highly suggest setting up a lesson with Ms. Lincoln. You will be glad you did! ALL 5 stars are for Cindy. Would give the Course 3 stars. I've been wondering if I could get new clubs without a fitting, but the numbers/data/feedback I received proved the opposite. This is a retraction of a previously very negative review based on poor communication on both sides, me included. I was fit for a new set of clubs recently. The Redtail employees were efficient although not all that personable as is the case with many of those who think they are awesome golfers, better than thou syndrome, you have seen it. They spent a fair amount of time with me and appeared competent. In the end, I have been happy with the Ping clubs although they fit me for a jumbo grip, you know what they say about guys with "jumbo" hands, don't you Donald? Once I got the right size grip (medium-large), which they did for free and while I waited, I have been pleased with my purchase, adding 20+ yards to my tee shots as well as a lower handicap (currently 15). There was some initial confusion regarding what I had ordered mostly because I did not get an itemized receipt and was going strictly from memory while waiting nearly 3 weeks for my special order clubs to arrive. The manager responded appropriately to my concerns, even tossing in a complimentary dozen Titleist ProV1X golf balls. Do not believe all of the "sale" hype you will be surrounded by when shopping because the many 20%, 30%,or 50% off markdowns actually bring the price down to what you would pay online, so the primary benefit from buying there being the excellent fitting technology available and expert club (Top 100 - Golf Digest) fitters that come with every purchase. This course is very nice...but as most reviews mention, they have an issue with the course getting very busy and backed up. We played on a rainy Wednesday afternoon, and moved at a good pace, before we knew it we had a single golfer they'd let on shortly after us nipping at our heels. He asked if he could play through and we said of course, because we're new golf and super chill...but then the course was all backed up after him, so for the rest we had people nipping at our heels. It got so bad that these impatient old golf folks were driving on the fairways before we even hit the green. Called the course later to let them know what happened and they just didn't care. This seems to be a logistics issue, and the first time I've felt the need to write a Yelp review in over 5 years. We'll just take our biz elsewhere.. read more

Get your kid into this golf camp now! The check-in process this morning was SO well organized, so professional, with all of the safety precautions in order. Every one we were greeted by along the way was super friendly and helpful, and the coaches are amazing with the kids. My son has been taking lessons there, and I've been impressed with all of the coaches, but I wasn't sure how they were going to deal with the camp situation since it would be servicing so many more kids. I was put at ease right away because they were most professional and vigilant about making sure the kids stayed a safe distance from one another, even as they processed all of us parents turning in paper work. They have full and half day camps, so visit them today to reserve a space for your kid because you will NOT be disappointed. read more

I waited for half an hour, asked again, no one showed for another 10 minutes. No one would acknowledge I was buying, all I needed was to try each set. Money in pocket. We gave my dad a certificate to the pro shop including a custom fitting session, so this review is for the shop, not the course. My dad just went in this week for his fitting with Rick Westbrook and came home giddy like a teenager (per my mom's report). They spent several hours together with Rick giving tips, evaluating his swing and clubs, and generally just taking the time to talk through everything. My dad sent a text to all us kids after the experience stating how fantastic of an experience it was, and thanking us all for selecting Rick ( My dad originally said the name of another golf place but my friend in the business recommended Rick over the other spot). We hear the other shop workers may be a bit on the ambivalent side- but when you're young and knowledgeable, I guess it may go to your head? These guys definitely know their stuff! Rick was the opposite of rude- he was patient and thoughtful and thorough and my entire family can't recommend him more. We all couldn't be happier- my dad is so hard to give gifts to, and when you find something he's over the moon for that he hasn't bought himself already, you found a true gem. We can't thank Rick enough for how responsive he was throughout the entire process of me being in NY while trying to coordinate and buy the gift card which was mailed in secret to my sister so my dad wouldn't see it... He was all about making sure my dad had a killer surprise and we are forever grateful. read more

I swore I would never do it again, but because of peer pressure (dam those guys), I relented and played Red Tail Golf Course this morning. From the beginning it was a bad experience. For those of you have experienced this City of Portland course, you know it is by far the most poorly staffed course in the cities collection of public courses. The Pro Shop sets the tenor with over the top rudeness! They treat you as thought hey are doing you a huge favor by allowing you to even speak to them. This not a one time complaint. Over the years I've witnessed and experienced it almost every time I have walked up to the desk. To give them one star is over rating them. This morning there was no starter on the first tee. Our time was 7:12, but when that time rolled around we were still waiting for a foursome in front of us AND they were waiting for a foursome that must have taken almost 30 minutes to play the relatively easy opening par four. The slow group did allow the first foursome to play through, but for the remainder of the day, we were stuck behind them, waiting and waiting on every shot. Strangely on the 18th hole the Player Assistant came up to us and apologized that we were forced into such a Slow round (just over five hours). The course itself never improves. Initially designed to be the flagship course for the city, it has deteriorated terribly. Well, enough said. This is the last review I will ever make in regards to Red Tail - I will never, I repeat never, play the course again! read more

My boyfriend and I recently started getting into golf and have visited this driving range a few times. I like how it is two levels and open late (until 10pm). I enjoy going later in the evening when it's not as crowded. We also decided to take a lesson so that we can learn proper technique and hopefully improve. Our instructor, Jeff, was awesome! He showed us video comparisons of our swing next to a professional's and I really appreciated how he took the time to really explain why we needed to change certain things and how we could reach the goals that we set for ourselves. I would definitely give him 5 stars. We are looking into taking a few more lessons from him soon. Sadly, a lot of the sales associates we have dealt with in the store weren't very friendly and sort of has this "why are these kids who don't know anything about golf in here" attitude towards us. So unfortunately because of that, I have to give it 3 stars. read more

The staff are uptight and arrogant- this is true. I can only think that is because of the nature of the job...They are golfers that can't golf yet work at the freaking golf course. It must be like torture every day. Imagine you were a top predator, say a great white shark, looking into a vast school of tuna... and they were always just out of reach. That must be what its like to work at a golf course. As far as the guy in Bunkers, his 'tude is legendary but I'm from Philly, so its like a taste of home... He's like a butterscotch krimpet. Other than the attitude and the occasional slow pace, this is a fantastic course. -It's a great challenge. -You can get a punch card for $22/round walking. -Holes 7,10,11 and 15 are among the best in the state. -The greens are good especially early in the season. -It's in the middle of Beaverton. -Good amount of practice space. -Go try any club out on the range anytime... get fit by decent staff. I mean, the list just goes on and on. Taken for what it is, Red Tail can't be beat if you live anywhere on the west side. read more

Forgot to book us down for our tee time, got us out late and didnt bother to give us a heads up that 6 groups of 4 kids walking the next 6 holes and that we probably wouldnt finish even 4 holes for twilight. Warm, sunny days in March are such a tease. Unless you get your ass out and do something to enjoy it. Then it's simply an opportunity to get some... sun. I just spent a gorgeous spring day golfing about 15 holes on twilight at Red Tail. It's my first experience here and I'm impressed. For a public course, this has a pretty nice facility and set of links... at least compared to some of the muni courses in PDX. The pro shop is huge and well-stocked and the driving range has a ton of berths. The 18-hole course has a great design, with plenty of long holes, interesting water, solid bunker action and deceptive hills. And even this early in March, the ground for the most part was pretty solid, with only a few muddy bogs here and there. Twilight in spring cost us $23 (carrying) which is a solid price for a course of this quality. It seems really well-kept. The only drawback was the crowd - it was heavy even on this sunny March weekend. I'm guessing the location in the heart of Beaverton and the lack of many other alternatives nearby make this a go-to for westsiders, of which I am not one. So maybe I'd stick to this during the weekdays when it's less crowded. I hate crowded courses. Overall, I definitely see myself coming ack to this course. I really enjoyed playing it. read more

NOTE: This is not a review of the course. I've done two things here, buy clubs and take a 6-session group introduction to golf lesson. ON PURCHASING CLUBS - I used a Nike "Fit to Play" pass, which means that while I had never played golf before (except for pitch & putt and mini) I went through a club fitting. I was a little hesitant because I figured that the minute I took a few lessons, I'd need to get new clubs. Turns out, that wasn't even close to the case. The pro talked to me about the different kind of clubs and which ones would be good for a beginner and a pro and why. I probably took over 100 swings with 2 different irons from 3 different kinds of irons and a couple of different drivers. Through all this he would put different angled pieces of clubs together. The results? Well, after my lessons I asked about some of the changes and it turns out, you can properly fit someone for golf clubs, even if the golfer has no clue what he's doing. The overall selection was overwhelming for a novice, and potentially dangerous for more experienced players. I'd expect that if you can imaging wanting it, they've probably go it. It's a good thing I had help because I definitely needed it. Score 1 for Redtail. Well actually, let's give them a -1. This is golf after all. ON 6-WEEK INTRO LESSONS - I waited a year to take lessons, because well, I'm just so awesome I don't need no stinking lessons! Ok, actually playing pre-lesson wasn't so great because I was trying NOT to improve just in case I was doing it wrong. Not useful OR fun. Redtail offers a variety of lesson options from frequent private lessons, to short terms "address an issue" lessons and lessons for kids and in groups and women only and wow, was I confused. I decided to take the approach that I have no clue what I'm doing, and I'm glad I did. I signed up for a 6-Week Intro to Golf Lesson for $149, and took all six weeks with the same instructor. I could not have asked for a golf pro more suited to my learning style. He was an engineer in a previous life so along with the what-to-do he also explained the physics of why it works. He was very consistent and answered every question from "could you do that with this other club?" to "What benefit does a glove offer?" Another thing I liked was side-by-side video comparison of my swing with a pro's swing. It's very helpful to see what you're doing right, and what you're doing the same and different, and seeing the change helped me address the issue. Since I just finished the lessons, I don't know how much my game has improved, but I would expect a noticable amount. The most important thing I got from the lessons though, was how and what to practice. Believe me, I'm much more comfortable holding clubs now than I was before, and at least on the range, I'm much more accurate. Redtail is a municipal target-style golf course that was renovated in 1998. It's one of those courses that the locals love to hate yet is always jam packed when the weather is decent. The course itself is difficult for a municipal course (slope of 136 from the tips) and that is a real problem as it is usually full of hackers. Almost every time I play here in the summer it is at least a 5 hour round (even on weekdays). You wait on every hole. They try to maintain the course the best they can, but the greens get hammered in the summer (read: bare spots) by idiots who don't fix their pitch marks and geese pooping all over them. The course has a couple odd holes (including a 646 yard par 5 hole affectionately known as the par 6) and the drainage is average. On the plus side, they have a large covered and heated driving range with good quality Nike range balls. Unfortunately it is mats only. A large well-maintained putting green sits outside right in front of the pro shop. With the demise of all the local small golf shops, Redtail has become the premier place to purchase golf clubs in the Portland metro area. They have by far the best golf club demo setup with four Trackman launch monitors and racks upon racks of demo clubs. This level of driver fitting is equivalent to what PGA Tour pros get. Their pro-shop staff is generally pleasant and competent. They offer a wide range of instruction including the popular Nike youth camps. Their female teaching pros are among the best in the area for ladies instruction. In summary, I would skip this golf course unless it's a matter of convenience. However, you'd be wise to buy your next set of golf clubs here. read more

Some friends and I just started our second round of golf lessons at Red Tail Golf. Robert Randall has been our golf instructor for both and is fantastic! He has a tremendous amount of experience and he puts it to good use by sharing his gift. I was a beginner with zero golf experience and he was very patient and encouraging. If you live next to this place you are very lucky. I got fitted and bought my new stix here. I get my lessons here and I live 1000 miles away. Dude they have the most track mans there, than any in the world!!! c'mon. I too live in one of the most expensive places in the world,other than Hong Kong, and here in San Francisco Bay Area and we have only 2 track mans, 1 in SF and 1 in San Jose c'mon really. In case you don't know track man, it is a machine that can tell you were to place your pinky toe on club impact to add a 100 yards to your drive. Believe it!!! So go here if you want to shave 20 strokes off your game. Don't trip about the staff they are all just all pre-occupied on how to shave strokes off your golf game. give 'em a break. In the end, you will walk out of there a better golfer. Trust me, I wouldn't have wasted my time writing this. read more

This is an update after getting fitted for a putter. The customer service rivals Nordstrom. On a busy day just before Christmas, the retail center was busy with customers but Rick Westbrook made me feel like my needs were his only purpose for being there. Rick did an analysis on my putting stroke and then narrowed my choices to four putters, explaining the merits of each and then letting me get a feel for that special one. After the purchase, he allowed me to hit balls with my new Callaway set that I was fitted for earlier. While I was doing that he was helping other customers but when I was done, Rick took the time to create a distance matrix from my results. read more

Me and my friend decided to come here for an early bird round of golf at 7:09. Once we go there the man at the pro shop said we could only play 9 holes. This being after we drove 30 minutes to get to the course. Our reservation online said 18 holes for $29, a fair deal for poorly conditioned course. But for 9 holes the cost was $24. They said they could probably get us on the back nine once we finished the front. When we got done with the front nine we went to the pro shop and saw a different guy working there. This man treated us with the upmost disrespect, even threatening us at one point saying "you won't like what I say next". We explained that the reservation was for 18 holes for $29 but he said it was our fault for making the reservation online. Makes no sense I know. Very poorly run golf course with egotistic pro shop workers, not worth the money. read more
