Chicken Fried steak at Jack's in Chico. Nov 2025.
    Wulfstan C.

We finally went to Jack's earlier in this year and it immediately became a go-too place for breakfast. Each time we have gone, prices have been reasonable, portions good, service excellent, and the food great. It's an old mid-century diner (looks like an old Sambo's to me, similar to, but different from the classic Denny's buildings of that area) so has a great diner ambience. Service is friendly and very attentive. Chicken fried steak, huevos rancheros, and buttermilk pancakes are excellent (5 stars). Corned beef hash of very good (4 stars). They also offer a side of one pancake with some dishes instead of toast, and I really like that. Very few places still do that and they get extra points for that option. Chicken fried steak has a nice crispy coating and is nicely cooked. The buttermilk pancakes are particularly excellent. Not too big, nicely toasty on the outside, light on the inside.

After a heavy night of drinking, a classic American breakfast is just what we needed. The ambiance of this restaurant is very classic, like any diner that's has been around for years. The waitresses were quick to serve and were very friendly, and they once they had listed off the giant chicken fried steak special, I just had to try it. Giant chicken fried steak special was smothered with gravy and served with hash browns, 2 eggs served however you'd like, and toast/ bread of your choice for ~$18. I chose a warm blueberry for my meal! Food was nothing super impressive, but just like the food from any other classic diner, it's a safe, reliable, and hearty. The flavors and texture of the food are as you'd imagine from any other diner, so you know what you're getting. My friend had ordered the three mimosas for $12.99. They were served in kinda small glasses, but still, that's a pretty decent deal. I would come back to this place if I were looking for good value diner food, but if I wanted to try something new or unique, I would look elsewhere.

    Spanish omelette with a biscuit

It's a diner, and the menu is broad with lots of things I'd like to try. I got the Spanish omelette, which was more like a folded frittata (which I prefer). It was tasty, though maybe a little short on the salt, which again is fine since they have three kinds of hot sauce plus ketchup and salt on the table. The country potatoes were great! They had some green peppers and onion as part of them, and were just very good. Love the atmosphere, and the service was top notch. Everything was very fast, and everyone was very polite and helpful. Fun to listen to the banter with the regulars, and the fact that banter and regulars exist is a good sign to me. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Chico!

An old-school diner with friendly service, reasonable prices, and great tasting food. Got the Carnitas Skillet for myself and my wife got the veggie eggs Benedict (substituted a slice of cinnamon roll French toast for the usual toast with no problem).

Jacks is singlehandedly the best breakfast venue in Chico. Fairly priced, lovely service, cozy ambience it's got it all. Trying all the other breakfast places and still keep coming back to jacks. Food is delicious and out incredibly quick. Staff are very attentive and nice. The manager I've often seen is incredibly welcoming and attentive. The orange juice is great. That sounds weird to praise orange juice but they got something there I tell ya. Portions are incredible for the price. Amazing value. Always get a country fried steak, always satisfied.

We started with drinks I got a chai latte and my friend got the watermelon refresher, both enjoyable. Next time I'll get it without the sprinkled cinnamon on top. I got the roasted potatoes with carnitas and eggs. The eggs were perfectly cooked over medium which is my favorite. The potatoes were beautifully roasted while soft on the inside. The pico de gallo also seemed fresh and flavorful. My friend got the chicken and waffles and felt the chicken was well seasoned and crunchy while still tender. We shared the bam bam waffle, it was very sweet, the black berry sauce was a good tart taste to balance out all the sugar. I will say that although the food was delicious and fresh, the price was a little higher than expected. An extra side of syrup was $2 more. A side of eggs(2) was $5. I shared the receipt. All and all I'm glad we stopped here on our way back to Sacramento. Great food.

The food is just nothing to write home about - I could make it myself without much effort, for a much lower price, and just better. A rave: I got food poisoning recently, NOT at Morning Thunder, but they were a contender. When I called to let them know, they handled it extremely well. They were surprised but said they would look closely at everything to make sure everything was safe and sanitary. (And yes, I did call to let them know when I confirmed it was not them.)

The outside seating is plentiful and groups of all types were represented: Mixed families, couples, friend groups, young, old, and in between. It's a friendly place with a lovely menu that has something for everyone. The names of the dishes were a blast from the past and I found that humorous and homey. Herb Caen was a regular columnist for the SF Chronicle who coined the term Beatnik back in the 50's, and there is an homage to him on the menu. Bob Denver and Sinatra also made the cut. I watched as a man walked through the patio greeting and being greeted by employees and patrons alike. The atmosphere is one of a friendly neighborhood casual family-friendly restaurant and I LOVED it. I placed our order and was given a number for the table. The food was brought out in a reasonable amount of time. We weren't counting and the company was all we needed at the time. Once the food came, the waitress was able to get everything extra that we requested including the receipt I forgot to get and even though I thought they wouldn't be able to print it out, they did. The service was top notch, friendly, and smiling. When I left the tip, under my usual 20% no less, (due to lack of small bills, my bad), she smiled ear to ear and thanked me like it was her first tip. When you go, please tip well. The reaction is worth every cent of the tip. Food: we bought three meals, a lunch to go and two breakfasts for there. I had the "Sinatra your way" which is two eggs how you like them, toast, and potatoes. He had a veggie omelette, which he seemed to like a lot. Neither of us could finish our potatoes. They are fantastic rustic breakfast potatoes with peppers and other items sautéed together. The eggs had paprika and/or a pepper on them. Just enough kick to be interesting, not enough to push them away. I enjoyed my breakfast thoroughly. The only meh item was the jelly. Smuckers isn't high quality. I expected something with cane sugar as opposed to HFCS with the vibe of the place. Still not enough to lose a star. Definitely going back there.

I scoured the menu and was excited to find so many hash choices. I was moved by the Irish Burrito, but ordered Linda's omelette; while my daughter went with the eggs Benedict. In a town that takes its breakfast seriously, and where I've probably worked my way through more menus and reviews than I should admit, this one quietly climbed right to the top of my list. My omelette was exactly what you want when you order one. Fluffy without being dry, full of flavor without trying too hard, and cooked like someone in the kitchen actually cares about eggs. The ingredients were balanced and fresh, not just thrown together as filler. The hollandaise sauce was original, I couldn't find a lemon, cheese or any other overwhelming base, it stood out. The hash was perfect. My daughter's eggs Benedict looked like a postcard version of what that dish should be. Perfectly poached eggs, rich hollandaise that didn't feel heavy, and ham that actually tasted like ham instead of just salt delivery. One of those plates where you steal a bite "just to try it" and immediately understand the decision. The real surprise for me was the potato pancake I picked instead of the usual hashbrowns. Light, airy inside, crispy outside, and seasoned just right. Honestly one of the better breakfast potatoes I've had anywhere. If potatoes had a hall of fame, this one would at least get a nomination. The place itself has a warm, comfortable feel. Wood tones, rooster themes everywhere, a relaxed local energy where people look like regulars and first-timers feel welcome anyway. Service was friendly and efficient without feeling rushed. In a city full of strong breakfast spots, this might actually be my current favorite. That's not something I say lightly.
