My first time ordering from this icon pizza place. I chose to visit today because they feature two Strombolis for around 18$! The person who took my order on the phone was very polite and friendly. He explained that the steak boli comes with onions and sauce and asked me if that was ok. Mmmm I said "Sounds delicious!" I also ordered the chicken bacon ranch boli. Also he advised that all bolis come with peppers and asked if I wanted hot or sweet. I opted for hot on the side. My order was hot and ready when I arrived even though I called an hour ahead. Perfect! When I was given one pizza box with my two Stromboli I figured they were short portioning due to the great price. WRONG!! The size is very generous & check out their specials! The food was mouthwatering and so delicious. I can't choose which one I liked more! The only advice I would give is to make your menu descriptive- for example- I don't know what a Pennyburger Stromboli is- or Italian Boli. I'll definitely be back!! 5 Star experience!! read more

First time trying Penny's pizza. The pizza is thin with a crunchy crust. It reminds me of pizza when I was a child. It was not greasy and had a hint of sweetness to the sauce. I think kids would enjoy it. We also had the cheese fries. The only problem was the delivery guy waited in our driveway for 5-6 minutes- so we had to wait for him to leave to get our food order. It was a no contact delivery. (This was written during Coronavirus.) So If your looking to try a pizza that doesn't taste like Dominos, then give it a try. It tastes like a pizza that an Italian Grandmom would make you. We will order again sometime soon. read more

Be patient with Penny's. They are super popular and continue to pump out pizza after pizza, so call it in early and expect to wait a bit more. Pizza will be piping hot and delicious. Red top is one of my favorites and the sweet sauce and cornmeal really allows this one to stand out from the rest. Under $14 for a large pizza in line with every other place I've experienced. They had done 2/$20 in the past, but not sure if this deal is still available. I should mention, best to eat this pie fresh. Reheating the next day can be a challenge with the cornmeal crust. Gets a bit hard, so my suggestion is to buy enough to be enjoyed the day of purchase. read more

Have lived in the area for years and always heard about Pennys but never got around to ordering from there. Saw the Sunday special of large pizza and large Stromboli for $19 so decided to order. I was excited about the deal until I cut into the Stromboli. The steak looked like frozen steak you get at the grocery store. Looks like is was cooked together and not broken up until after cooked, and even at that point it still was in unappetizing chunks. Ended up throwing it away after attempting to eat it. The pizza was ok, but not worth coming back just for that. Not sure if this was a one off, but will not be going back. Oh and to the owners, you should install some air conditioners in the windows instead of having a tiny window fan so your employees aren't sweating profusely while preparing food. read more

Penny's is okay, but could be far better, even stellar with just a little effort to taste. The great news, this is a pizza only shop. Very small menu, which if you read my reviews, really should work. Pizza, Stromboli and calzone. That's it. I ordered a plain original pie and a white pizza with broccoli and spinach. For starters, the sauce is on top. I've never really liked this, but for only one reason; it gets cold fast. Anyone who knows corn meal crusts, it does not re-heat well. So your left eating slightly warm or cold amounts of red sauce. Not appealing. It is a sweet red sauce and the sweetness can overpower your taste buds. Less sauce would present a better balance of sweet and savory. But if sweet is your thing, you'll probably like this pizza. The crust was thin and made with corn meal. It is flavorful, but again, over-powered by not only the sweet sauce, but the weight of the sauce itself. The inner part of the pizza falls apart when you lift the slice. Go with slightly less sauce. Overall, a good pizza. The white pizza was good as well. You pick up the garlic and salt and it all blends well with the crust. The broccoli did not taste fresh, rather tasted as if it were frozen, or over cooked. I can't be certain. Having read rave reviews about Penny's, I was a little disappointed. I do think they have solid pies but I have had far better. Penny's does not deliver and there is no dining area, take-out only. They do have soda's available. The hours are very limited, Thursday - Sunday from 3-9pm. The prices are more than reasonable. You would think a pizza only shop, so focused on a few items would be a stand-out. It is tasteful but not really unique. Although I can understand the higher ratings based on limited selection in this area. Put Penny's in downtown Philly or anywhere in NYC, and well, it just wouldn't fare well. I think the Pottstown/Limerick area has fairly low standards so it's not hard to impress people. I agree with the first reviewer, Penny's has a legacy following but I question their taste buds. When I was picking up my order, I was the only person out of 5 that was under 60. I'm just saying... The best pizza I have had is Giovanni's, then Rossi's. But they are a different, more traditional Italian than this style. So the comparison may not be fair. One last thing. I've said this before as well. If you are going to have a website and a Facebook page, update it or at least remove the old dated info. Lots of people talk about how great Pennys Pizza is, so we thought we would give it a try. I liked the pizza but my wife did not. They use a corn meal crust and the pizza sauce (which sits on top of the cheese), is on the sweet side. When you initially open the pizza box, you think they forgot the cheese, but it's there under all the sauce. We ordered just a plain cheese for the kids and a bacon and onion for ourselves. The bacon wasn't cooked real well, which is why I think my wife ultimately didn't like it. We do prefer the bacon on our pizza to be on the more crunchy side. At the end of the day, we were left somewhat disappointed, given the hype that seems to surround this place. It's not bad pizza, but it's not pizza that we would necessarily crave. read more

What a bummer that this place closed. I remember as a kid getting penny's pizza was a treat. Really thin and hard crust, sweet chunky tomato sauce and fresh cheese. IIRC, they put the cheese on first then the sauce on top. Very unique way of making pizza. In general, you'd wait anywhere from 45min to 1.5hrs to get a pie depending on the night. The owner I guess decided they had enough of making pies and sold to someone else. Amato's I believe is the name. Well., they too are now gone. Which is fine because they were garbage. Not your typical pizza. Be prepared for a change! When I first laid eyes on Penny's Pizza I became disoriented....THIS? This is not like the others. This looks like it has no cheese. This is soggy. This sauce is different...too sweet. Then I started having flashbacks to my childhood. I remembered eating homemade pizza sitting in front of the tv watching Bonanza. Then I realized I LOVED this pie! It is fabulously different and it's own. The sauce is on top of the cheese. The sauce is overpowering and distinct. The cheese is not bland like most pizza's offer. The crust quickly becomes soggy from all the sauce, so forget about waltzing around holding a folded piece. Sit down and eat it. It is like no other. Penny's Pizza is run out of a home that sits on Ridge Pike in Collegeville. No delivery. No seating. NOTHING BUT PIZZA comes out of that joint. It is a serious pizza place! Love it. read more

It took about three weeks until I could even get through (all the old-timers getting a fix again.) Essentially, it is very close to what it used to be (cornmeal on the crust, which is , of course, not traditional Italian pizza, but popular in the Norristown area for some reason. I agree that it does not re-heat well, and with no seating, I was not surprised to see entire vans of people in the parking lot with stacks of boxes consuming them on the spot. The sauce was actually LESS sweet than I remember it, and certainly less sweet than Franzones now is. The cheese was close to the old blend (mostly white American if I am not mistaken) but seemed to lack a little of the old tang. It has been a few weeks, so I'm not sure if they are still as overwhelmed as they were the first month of re-opening. I called at 3:30 to place my order (they open at 4:00 officially) and was told 30 minutes for a pizza but an hour and a half for a stromboli. I skipped the stromboli. So in sum, if you liked the old Penny's you'll still like the re-opened one. If you don't like this style of pizza (and granted, not everyone does) then just don't eat it. Rudely condemning a style of food that many others enjoy does not make you a connoisseur. read more

I have grown up with this pizza. Ever since I was little my parents would come here and get a pie and a Stromboli. This pizza is the best. The sauce is sweet and the cheese is delicious. When it closed a couple of years ago we were sad but when it reopened we literally had a party and ordered 5 pies and 3 Stromboli. We missed it so much! But we are happy its back.
