First time at the Redcoat and I'm already planning my return. I loved EVERYTHING about this place from the food to the atmosphere to our amazing server to the outside facade. Before I get to the food, I want to say THANK YOU to our lovely server who welcomed us warmly, made sure we always had what we needed, took our photo, and got our orders right. Now the food...let's start with a shout-out to the kitchen who perfectly executed the widely varied burger topping and temperature combinations for six people. My meal...magically battered onion rings and mushrooms followed by one of the finest burgers I've ever swallowed. 8 oz of flavorful medium rare juicy bliss on a fantastic bun topped with lettuce tomato pickle and cole slaw joy. I was driving home when I realized that I was given the wrong burger. Stay with me. I had been puzzled about why the burger lacked flavor and seasoning. I had to add ketchup to amp up the flavor. At first, I attributed it to the Scotch egg I had, a soft-boiled egg wrapped in well-seasoned sausage and fried. Both the sausage and the accompanying sauce were savory and tasty. And then, I thought, potentially, it was the battered onion rings that dulled my taste buds. However, logically, the Brasserie burger includes bacon, caramelized onions, and Dijon mustard, flavors that are not muted nor shy about shouting their presence. I checked my leftovers and found no evidence of those add-ons, and then found my receipt. I was charged for a plain hamburger, so at least I didn't pay more than I should have. But I was disappointed not to have received what I ordered. Service was otherwise fine. read more

How the mighty have fallen. What a shame. I can no longer say Red Coat has one of the best burgers in the area. I can't even say they have a good burger. Wow. Ordered takeout for dinner. Waited a few minutes, but was ready around the time I requested. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger (with Piedmontese beef) and had fries and onion rings. I'll start with the good. The fries were very good. Crispy and salted, they definitely hit the spot. The onion rings were the best I've had. Hearty batter with a perfect crunch. Absolutely delightful and I could have eaten a million of them. Onto the burger. First of all, there was no bacon. If you're charging over $3 for bacon, gotta make sure it makes it on the burger. I also ordered the bun toasted; it was not. Good start. The patty had zero flavor. No seasoning could be detected. The only redeeming part was the burnt onion which I added. They really were burnt but had nice flavor. I'd give the burger a D rating. For $25, it really was a giant disappointment and eff you. Can't say I'm wanting to return. Such a shame. They still have the best burger in town at this location. I love their Carribean Chowder as well as Shepards Pie. The service is a little slow. It's good enough that I always leave a 20%+ tip. The ambience is old school burger. The seating at the booths is too tight. I always try to get a table. It could use a subtle facelift. It feels a bit used up. The tables need refinishing, they could use new flooring. The restrooms though almost always clean feel old which makes them feel a bit grungy. This is my favorite place by a large margin for a burger. read more

Exterior is really rundown. The paint is peeling and parking lot is more gravel and pit holes than paved. The interior is very dark so it is harder to see the state of things. Although some of the booths have seen better days. Our waitress was very friendly. Prices were on the high side with a steep price for customizations. $18 for just a burger $2.35 for bacon, 75¢ each for cheese and bbq sauce. Bring my burger to over $20 without even including fries. The burger looked a lot better than what it was. I asked for medium rare and it was closer to well, only a little pink to the burger. The meat itself was dry and flavorless. No seasoning or char flavor to the burger. Bun was close to being stale. The lettuce was surprisingly very bitter. Which also negatively impacted the overall flavor. I've been coming here for years and the food is still as good as it always was. Consistency is so important. For starters, we got the French onion soup, battered mushrooms, and Scotch egg. All were fantastic, no notes. As far as entrees, I wasn't too impressed with the Cobb salad but the portion was generous. The burgers were perfect as usual. We also shared a Mac and cheese and it was perfectly cheesy and delicious. We shared the bread pudding for dessert and it was great. Honestly such a staple in the Detroit area. My only gripe with this location is the horrible red lighting in the dining area. I always feel like a vampire and struggle to see in there. The seating in some of the booths feels kind of low and too close to th table. Otherwise, the food is consistently delicious and worth the minor annoyances. read more

The service is amazing here!! Very friendly and attentive. Big shout out to Jon! I wish I loved the food. I've been here a few times and it's just okay. Maybe I'm not ordering the right things. The calamari is pretty good, but the peppers served with it are full of seeds so you have work to do to empty them if you don't want a mouth full of seeds. The fried pickles and onion rings are pretty decent too, but a lot more breading than I expected. The French onion soup is tasty. The clam chowder is good too. The Cobb Salad was pretty bland. I'm not sure why. Everything was fresh and tossed beautifully but it just lacked flavor. The homemade ranch dressing is very good. My mom enjoyed her burger so I'll have to order one next time. It's made to your preferred level of doneness and they have a special sauce. The decor is fun---very red and moody. I love the red leather booths, although a few are a bit torn. Redcoat has to up its game and stop charging exorbitant prices for EVERYTHING thinking its history will justify it - it doesn't. Ordered the brasserie burger medium. It's a $22 burger. For that price, it should be top-notch, cooked to order. Burger was presented without temp stick....first tip off and waitress ran away, never to check on us until the end of the meal, second tip off. Did I mention the $22 burger is ala carter? $22 can't include crisps or fries? Everyone knows fries are a cheap filler side dish. The big disappointment, my medium burger was raw. Only seared and cold in the middle. Disgusting. At the very end of the meal, when the waitress finally stopped by (she had no other tables), she blamed it on new staff....it took her a few minutes of making excuses to begrudgingly suggest money off. Just a heads up- The first time I came here my order was wrong and I waited over an hour for my to go order. The manager was awesome, explained they had new cooks in the back and that the kitchen was backed up. As someone who's worked in the service industry for many years I understood. He comped my fries and all was well. I figured I'd give them another try. This time I ordered a burger. I asked for it to be well done no pink. I picked up the food took it home and when I took a bite the burger was completely pink. I called the restaurant, brought back the burger, they apologized and had it remade. The waitress and I cut the burger and it was still pink. She took it back again and when she brought it back she said that according to the cooks, it was just the lighting that was making it pink. I have to say that after all these years, I didn't realize Redcoat has yet to be reviewed. I have been here a handful of times in the past and recently paid it a visit with some good friends of mine. I don't believe I've been here since before Covid, so I was both excited and hesitant to try it again because you just never know if something you enjoyed previously will maintain the same standards you are used to. Well fellow foodies, I am pleased to report Redcoat is still an awesome restaurant. First of all I was shocked they were able to seat our party of 7 in less than 5 minutes on a Friday night, kudos to you guys! The atmosphere is so inviting and lively. Even though the bright red lightning can be a bit much, it gives the whole place its charm (hence the name of the establishment). The menu has all your bases covered, and pretty much everything is delicious. Besides the obvious burgers they are known for, they have great soups, salads, sandwiches, wings, and comforting entrees. While everyone else got the classic beef burgers, I went against the grain and ordered their special that evening which was the salmon burger. Admittedly I was famished by the time we had dinner here, but I have to say all the food I consumed was amazing. The seafood chowder was a great starter, and the batter on the onion rings is some of the best you will ever have. Surprisingly my friends and I even decided to stick around for some desserts which is not something we often do. We had chocolate pudding, creme brulee, bread pudding, and key lime pie (although I believe this one was frozen and didn't thaw properly). Overall a fantastic night out. Friends suggested trying their burger here. The burger was fine, no complaint here. Though I don't quite understand the hype of the burger. Maybe the premium version would be better? Also, the burger doesn't come with fries, you need to order it separately. The service was the interesting part. The waitresses for our table were good. Everything could improve! Soggy bread, rotten meat that tastes off and a general manager more interested in making excuses for it than fixing it. My coworker's burger was ordered medium well and came bloody! The manager said he checked everything himself so he knows for a fact there was nothing wrong with our order. Unfortunately, Redcoat Tavern has failed again and despite the amazing onion rings that had us coming back -- the overall experience just lost us. She ordered a well done burger - it came out very pink. I ordered a medium burger that was well done. Not a big deal - they swapped our orders around. But, we were already past the point of swapping these around. I'll also note that she scraped all the mayo off her burger by this point - because we both had mayo rather than the "secret sauce." She's not a mayo fan). Didn't intend to send the burger back, but the waitress insisted. She came back a bit later claiming the burger was well done, it was just the lightning. No, the burger was clearly very pink inside - while mine was clearly done pretty well under the same lighting. Finally came back with the burger -- with, more mayo on it. By this time, I was done and she had lost her appetite -- took a couple bites and waited and waited for our waitress. Finally flagged someone else down for a box... and then waited for the bill. I asked about the mayo vs. special sauce. She claimed someone new was in the kitchen and most likely didn't know. Sigh.... we even noted that she asked us if he wanted the burger sauce during ordering and she clearly scraped the mayo off her first try at a burger. We left... however, this entire experience didn't sit well with me. So, I went back inside and asked the hostess to speak with the manager. I explained the situation briefly -- Mr. Manager claims their special burger sauce is mayo with onion. Nothing else - just mayo and onion. We've been here enough time to know that is not the case. The Manager was bordering on being rude and with a "how dare you question the great Redcoat Tavern" vibe. The onion rings are amazing. The burgers are, generally, pretty solid - you can get better and you can get much worse. The service can be hit-or-miss. The management SUCKS. There are too many really good place out there that treat customers like they're wanted and welcomed - Redcoat Tavern is not one of them. read more
