The burger of burgers. My favorite burger on the planet. The Redcoat burger is simple, delicious, and consistent. I usually order mine with only the sauce and grilled onions (occasionally I add a fried egg), but this time I added sautéed mushrooms and it was an amazing addition. The meat is high quality, and if you want a leaner option they have the option to upgrade to that as well, but usually I prefer the classic. This burger has a very specific, and in my opinion underrated, quality. The juiciness from the burger makes the inner part of the bun soft, but the outside of the bun maintains its structural integrity. Haven't found this at many burger places. Have been here a million times (Yelp says I have checked in 42 times and that's just at the WB location) so have had a variety of the sides as well. By far the best are their onion rings. Would also recommend getting the French onion soup and the coleslaw. With the coleslaw it isn't the largest portion, but it's quite good. The fries are fine but nothing to write home about. They're tasty and you'll enjoy them, but they pale in comparison to the onion rings. Past couple years I have been getting carry-out, and they have formalized that side of their operation, which is nice. These Onion rings are always fabulous. The food overall is wonderful, but a bit pricey for this traveler. I really enjoy the waitstaff and can't believe that's what I overpaid for. Our server was Julie and she was extremely polite. Maybe a bit overzealous...but we like that. My peeve is mistakes in delivering the order. She nailed it. I really think the Shepherds Pie is the best item on the menu. I also, recommend you split the Chicken Pot Pie with someone you love. Atmosphere...was very cozy. Wasn't at all like the Royal Oak location we've frequented so many times in the past. This is better lit with a more open floor plan. Not near as claustrophobic as RO. We went for dinner and sat outside. We ordered the hand-battered mushrooms as a starter. They had a separate menu with drinks and specials. I tried to order the salmon burger but they were out?! Also on the specials menu was a Beyond Meat burger (vegan) version of their The Original Redcoat Special Hamburger. We ordered this and the Brasserie burger with hand-battered onion rings (appetizer). The food was good but I'm not sure we will be back for awhile. read more

We got calamari as an appetizer, it was good but definitely did not have enough calamari in it. They overloaded it with banana peppers and red peppers, which were a good garnishment, but didn't compensate for the lack of actual calamari. Though the calamari was some of the best we've ever had. I got a chicken Caesar salad. It was good, not worth $20 though. My boyfriend says he's made better chicken in an air fryer, I don't know if he's telling the truth or not. My boyfriend ordered the battered shrimp with fries. It was $25 and came with five pieces of shrimp. That's atrocious, bro. $5 a piece. The shrimp tasted good, he says. The fries were warm and crunchy. I enjoyed them. The best part of the meal was the dessert. The cookie and ice cream sandwich was very enjoyable. The ice cream was rich and the cookies were soft. The Bloomfield location of Redcoat Tavern is always busy when I arrive. You will not get seated until your full party has arrived. We sat in the bar section, this was just one of our ladies night out. The table was lined with Green Tea Shots and Martinis. I had a Lemon Drop Martini , which was on point! That fresh lemon in it just do it for me. I tried the Strawberry Lemon Drop but which was ok , I prefer the plain Lemon Drop of course with a sugar rim. On this particular visit, I ordered the Onion Soup (French Onion Soup) which was delicious. Because of my suggestion 3 other ladies at the table ordered the soup also. The broth was tasty and it was loaded with onions and toasted bread with a thick topping of cheese. The soup filled me up so I just ordered an appetizer of shrimp. I received five of the biggest battered deep fried golden shrimp ever. The shrimp were cooked just right. I want to say our waiter name is Ryan and he is the best. He always is friendly, quick witted, and he gets the drinks and food out quickly. Well, two martinis , shrimp appetizer and French Onion soup will cost you around $50. Points taken off because an employee came out as we LEGALLY parked in a handicap space and he told us we could not park there because that was where pick-up orders parked. When we mentioned that they should not be allowing non handicap people to park in the handicap spaces he told us we still needed to move our car. My advice to him is learn the law and stop telling people who are parking legally that they can't park there - and he should fuck off. So many businesses are hurting for customers and this moron is telling people not to park in a LEGAL HANDICAP space! UFB Sent three items back - FOOD WAS BURNT (including the fried food). Prime rib was tough. All in all the entire experience SUCKED. They actually have a sign as you enter that they are severely understaffed. One waitress actually told us that many of their former employees don't want to come back to work because they're making too much in unemployment. So if you can't staff your restaurant and the food sucks, maybe you should just stay closed Our server was very apologetic and nice. She said she almost walked out today because of the way in-dining customers are being treated. I do not agree with that comment the burger was adequate but lacked seasoning or anything else to make it special. I ordered the brassiere which is a beef patty, bacon, tomato, gruyere and dijion mustard mayo on a brioche bun for $11.75. The burger was good, don't get me wrong but I've been to the Royal Oak location before and the quality there was much better than at this establishment. My friend ordered the fish and chips and said it was exactly what you'd want and definitely a recommend. I came in with my friend yesterday. We were sat down right away. We sat outside and it was a great decision. There was a slight breeze, inside was too cold. The waitress came over right away and we ordered the mac & cheese and blackened tenderloin tips as our appetizers. The mac & cheese was too cheesy and needed to be baked more because it was very liquidy. The taste was good, I just wished it was baked more. The steak bites were very good and I love dipping the bread into the sauce! As my entree I ordered a piedmontese burger with grilled onions and cheddar cheese. I also ordered a side of fries. My friend ordered a burger as well. The burger was pretty good and looked even better. Some parts were a bit burnt. Also, they put huge slices of onion? My friend really liked their burger. The fries were good too, but nothing special. I have a hard time deciding between cajun and regular fries, I usually order both lol. I only ordered the plain fries this time. My family has been going to Red Coat for over 30 years. I took my daughter there today. We each had a burger and requested pickle chips as the spear you normally get isn't easy to put on the burger. They charged us each $1 for a small container of pickle chips (maybe 6 pickles) and we didn't get the pickle spear that has always come with the hamburger. I asked about it and the waiter was unapologetic about it. I paid $18 for the hamburger and they feel it necessary to tack on another $1 for pickle chips. Honestly I don't think I'll go back, here in Novi we can get the same great burger for $14 at Copper Mug and they give ya all the pickles ya want. read more

I have been craving a burger for the past month. But not just any burger... an amazing, juicy, perfect burger. I knew we had to order take-out from Redcoat. We called in and ordered 2 Piedmontese burgers, fries, and bbq wings to go and they were ready in about 20ish minutes. They are currently offering a curb-side take-out to minimize any contact. I've come here many times over the past couple years, but this was the first time in about a year. So glad I decided to come back. I ordered the Cobb Salad for the first time and it has to be one of the best cobb salads in the area. It's chopped up super small and the dressing is great. There is an ample amount of toppings and chicken in it. The avocado portion was lacking, the only downside. Ordered sweet potato fries EXTRA CRISPY! This is the way to do it. They have no seasoning but they don't need any. Came out piping hot and fresh: delicious. Our custom burger had egg bacon cheese and the classic toppings. It was huge and tasty. Piedmontese is low in fat but it doesn't taste like that at all! The brioche bun was toasted well. The Cuban was my friends food so I did not try it but he finished it so it must have been good. The rustique salad was a great healthy option. For dessert we wanted to get the florida key lime pie, but they were all out :(. So we settled for the ice cream burger. Two cookies (tasted like Costco cookies; not a bad thing just reference) with a MOUNTAIN of vanilla ice cream. Good, nothing special. It took 3 of us to eat it there was that much ice cream! The cookies should have been warmed up. Didn't have a problem getting a table at 5:30 on a Friday, but the wait picked up as the night went on. I accidentally ordered carryout on DoorDash from this location, I thought it was the one in Royal Oak. However, I was surprised by the service I received. The order was completed quickly and the food was still hot when it arrived. Everything tasted delicious and was as expected. I would definitely order from here again. Very good. read more

Flew into Detroit for business and decided to hit up the Red Coat with my coworkers for our farewell to the D meal. Red Coat is one of those restaurants that to me seemed out in the middle of nowhere Detroit. It also seemed to be an old(er) restaurant as the décor was slightly dated and wreaked of the 80's. Despite the old school charm Red Coat was a decent spot to dine. I enjoyed a really good burger that was everything a burger should be. Right size, slightly messy and just flavorful all around. I also had a Cajun gumbo soup that had every bit of the Cajun bite to it. We enjoyed a few beers. Know that Red Coat has a solid selection of crafts on tap and in the bottle as a place should. Also noticed a peculiar looking wine room in the middle of the dining room. I think they were using it for storage and wine... I really couldn't have asked for more leaving the D that day. Between the service and the food, I was satisfied. Red Coat is not a destination restaurant in my book but if in the area definitely worth a go. read more

I thought this place was pretty solid. I went for the Brasserie Burger, which I had been told had been rated #1 burger numerous times for the Detroit Metro area. It was pretty good, overall. I wasn't a big fan of the watercress, if I'm being picky, but overall it was a very tasty burger. Don't think it met my high expectations though. The onion rings were very good, and the sweet potato fries are very good also, so top marks for those. The decor inside is pretty strange - very dark, weird tinted mirrors all over the inside - a bit odd. Service was great though, and the food was pretty good. I can only assume that since Covid restrictions have been lifted people are just happy to be out of the house, it's the only logical reason this place always seems busy. The food is sub par, the service is hit or miss, the place always has dirty floors and sticky tables and the menu is a joke. They used to have decent burgers but they have definitely changed their blend to something cheaper. The calamari was a pile of frozen crap. What happened to redcoat? I get the pandemic impacted most businesses - causing shortened hours, low staffing, supply shortages, etc - but the changes at redcoat seem to go far beyond those. It's no longer a late night food spot, the kitchen closes at 1030pm, and the bar seems like something out of a college town. When you enter the first thing you smell are the sour bar taps that smell like stale bear and vomit. Getting service at the bar, even on days when the bar is not full, takes 10-15 minutes. There was also no one at the hostess stand. I can't even comment on if the food has changed, but if these things are any indication i would assume it has. The more recent reviews speak of poor management response to customer issues/concerns and honestly I'm not surprised. read more

As someone else stated they need to invest in exterior and interior improvements. The parking lot is awful. For the price of everything they need to invest in renovations. The service was great but the food took forever. We made the mistake of not getting a burger. However, our order was pretty simply the chicken pot pie and fish and chips. The pot pie was disappointing and I had 3 small 2 inch pieces of chicken. The rest was mostly potatoes and a few carrots and onions. It was good just seriously for the price I would expect it to have more meat than a Marie Callender's pot pie. The Berkley location is so much better but also needs renovations. read more

I haven't been to the redcoat Tavern in many years. This was my dad's favorite place for burgers and I thought it's time I go check it out again. I have to say it holds up as probably one of the best burgers I've had in years. I ordered the Piedmont burger and it did not disappoint. The options available on the burger were fantastic. The proportion was perfect and it was cooked to perfection. Staff were all very cordial and the wait time was incredible. There are certain restaurants that, after you read the reviews, you wonder about your own sense of reality. Red Coat's hamburger has been voted best in the Metro Detroit area some 50 times over the years. So it is surprising, to say the least, to see it rated as 3 1/2 stars. Maybe it's because the restaurant is judged against impossibly high standards. Maybe it's because everyone has a favorite burger place and dislikes the fame of others. But, for me, it is consistently the best hamburger I have eaten (and I have tried many). It starts with the patty -- a proprietary blend made for Red Coat by Fairway Packing in Eastern Market. The patty is thick enough to be successfully cooked to order and the experienced cooks can get it to a medium rare without leaving it raw. The standard toppings, lettuce, tomato and special sauce (mayo with onion flavor) are always fresh. Then there is the list of over 30 add-ons including 8 different cheeses, 6 different sauces (including Detroit's favorite "Zip sauce"), five kinds of buns/bread and two kinds of patties (the Piedmontese patty is wonderful). Last night I ordered swiss, burnt onions and zip sauce. Simply amazing. The beef, toppings and bun are all complementary to make the best hamburger. The West Bloomfield location is crowded and noisy. I have never encountered bad service but have had to wait on some occasions. Parking is also sometime problematic. Last night, the service was excellent. If you are looking for one of the best hamburgers in Metro Detroit, stop in. You will not be disappointed. read more

All in all, this place wasn't too bad. It is noisy in the bar, but the food and service were both good. I ordered the Amish chicken and noodles. And my coworker ordered the brasserie burger. The chicken and noodles was a little on the bland size, but the puff pastry on top was perfectly cooked! The burger was HUGE. His came medium well, instead of medium rare, but it was still juicy and tasted good. The fries were delicious, and the hand breaded mushrooms were some of the best that I have ever had. I like this location better than the royal oak location because of the brightness and the space between tables! The other location is far too dim and red and the seating area is too crammed. This location actually feels like a restaurant. Food here is always good! Steak bites, burgers, Mac and cheese and chicken tenders are on my rotation here and they never disappoint.
